On November 14, the Public Security Bureau of Xincheng District in Hohhot issued a statement regarding a recent incident where a farmer reported the theft of sunflowers from his contracted land. Police responded promptly, and so far, eight individuals have been administratively detained, with the investigation ongoing.
On November 13, Mr. Li, a local farmer, disclosed that approximately 100 acres of his sunflower fields had been looted and destroyed by nearby villagers. He urged authorities to address the issue properly. Mr. Li explained that he had cultivated 400 acres of sunflowers in Ulan Bulang Village, Daqingshan Subdistrict, Xincheng District. As harvesting began recently, around 70 villagers entered his fields on the morning of November 1, stealing and damaging the crops. According to him, "30% was stolen, while 70% was ruined," resulting in direct losses of 500,000 yuan.
Footage from the scene showed multiple individuals harvesting and loading sunflower seeds, with some even arriving in cars. A witness remarked, "They’re stealing the good ones and leaving the damaged ones behind."
A representative from the Daqingshan Subdistrict Office confirmed the looting but noted the exact number of participants remained unclear as police investigations continued. The sunflower fields, left unharvested after ripening, had initially seen sporadic theft by passersby. "Due to insufficient supervision, nearby villagers may have assumed the area was unmonitored, leading to mass harvesting," the official added.
