Suzuki’s Electric Minicar Uses BYD Batteries to Outperform Its Rival—30% More Range Per Charge

Suzuki has unveiled its first light pure electric vehicle, the e Sky, in Japan, and it’s making waves with a remarkable efficiency feat. The model, set to hit Japanese showrooms in November and expand to Europe next year, relies on lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by a subsidiary of China’s Byd Company Limited, packing just a 26kWh capacity.

That modest battery yields a full-charge range of 310 kilometers, translating to roughly 12 kilometers per kilowatt-hour—the highest energy efficiency recorded among current light EVs. In real-world terms, the e Sky travels about 30% farther than rivals like the BYD Dolphin or the Nissan Sakura on the same amount of electricity.

So how did Suzuki pull off this efficiency crown? Chief Engineer Tomoyuki Tsubaki offered a strikingly simple explanation: “We refined every component down to 1 gram and 1 millimeter—there’s no special magic trick.”

The secret lies in the details. The e Sky tips the scales at just 1,030 kilograms and stands 1.625 meters tall, adopting a high-roof van silhouette. Unlike the Dolphin’s towering 1.8-meter design, Suzuki’s lower profile reduces aerodynamic drag, though it sacrifices some headroom for passengers compared to its competitor.

Powering the model is Suzuki’s first in-house developed E-Axle, which integrates the motor, inverter, and reducer into a single unit delivering 47kW and 133N·m of torque. Tsubaki noted that light vehicles aren’t built for speed, so the priority was miniaturization. The car rides on the new Heartect e platform, purpose-built for light EVs, with the battery flat-mounted under the floor to balance lightweight construction, high rigidity, and a low center of gravity.

Charging capabilities include 50kW DC fast charging that fills 80% in 25 minutes, a 6kW wall charger completing a full charge in 4.5 hours, and a 100V/1,500W vehicle-to-load outlet for external power use. Inside, the four-seat cabin features a 10.1-inch central display, digital instrument cluster, and heat pump air conditioning—all designed to keep costs accessible.

Interestingly, Suzuki’s first mass-produced EV, the eVitara, slated for 2025, relies on electrification tech from partner Toyota. The e Sky, however, folds lessons learned from that collaboration into Suzuki’s own design philosophy, aiming for an affordable price point as the brand’s inaugural light EV.

The e Sky’s main adversary, the BYD Dolphin, launched in Japan on July 28 with prices ranging from 2.145 million to 2.497 million yen (approximately 88,800 to 103,300 yuan). It offers two blade battery options—22.4kWh and 35.84kWh—delivering ranges of 210 and 320 kilometers respectively, making it Japan’s first light EV to surpass 300 kilometers. Demand has been brisk, with orders topping 1,000 units within ten days of launch.

For context, the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV both use 20kWh batteries for 180 kilometers of range, while the Honda N-ONE e: manages 295 kilometers. Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki has openly acknowledged the competitive pressure, calling BYD a "huge threat" in the evolving EV landscape.
