US Tech Giants Surpass $700 Billion Mark in AI-Related Expenditures This Year

Major U.S. technology companies are currently planning capital expenditures totaling $725 billion this year, primarily directed toward AI data center equipment.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and Meta Platforms, Inc. have both raised their full-year capital expenditure guidance. Microsoft provided its first full-year spending estimate through December, matching Alphabet at $1900 billion.

Among the four hyperscale cloud providers, only Amazon.com maintained its expenditure forecast unchanged at $2000 billion. However, the company's first-quarter spending surged significantly, leading to a contraction in free cash flow.

Meta Platforms, Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated during an analyst call on Wednesday, "We have increased our infrastructure capital expenditure expectations for this year." The company raised the upper limit of its spending plan to $1450 billion.

"The increase is mainly due to rising hardware component costs, particularly higher memory chip prices. But based on signals from our own business and across the industry, we are confident in maintaining this investment."

The four trillion-dollar market cap tech giants reported broadly strong results, with multiple key metrics meeting or exceeding expectations, providing support for increased capital expenditures.

However, market reactions were mixed: Amazon.com and Alphabet delivered stronger earnings reports than Meta Platforms, Inc. The market also perceives Meta's investment risks as higher than its peers—companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com, which are expanding in cloud computing, can lease out excess computing capacity to offset investment costs.
