According to informed sources, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is requesting agents from across the nation to deploy to Minneapolis for a temporary assignment. Recently, the FBI sent messages to agents throughout the country seeking volunteers for temporary relocation to the city. The messages did not specifically mention the escalating protests against the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) occurring there, nor did they detail the nature of the assignment.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security had previously dispatched additional personnel to Minneapolis. The city became a focal point for anti-ICE protests after an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Good while she was seated in a vehicle on January 7.
It remains unclear what specific duties the FBI will assign to the agents who volunteer to go to Minneapolis. Traditionally, FBI agents focus on national security-related work, such as counterterrorism, organized crime, and high-profile violent crimes.
According to a post on his X account by FBI Director Kash Patel, he and Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche visited Minneapolis on Friday. In the post, Patel stated that the FBI is "cracking down on violent actors, investigating financial networks supporting criminals, and has already made multiple arrests."
The FBI declined to comment.
