Meta (META), Pinterest (PINS), Reddit (RDDT), Snap (SNAP), Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google, and Microsoft's (MSFT) LinkedIn must display warnings to young users regarding the mental health risks of predatory features, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Friday.
The mandate applies to platforms utilizing addictive feeds, autoplay, or infinite scroll functions, the regulator said.
Young users will see these notifications upon initial use of the features and periodically based on their continued activity, and will be unable to bypass or skip these mandatory disclosures, the authority added.
The legislation aims to address data showing that high social media consumption correlates with increased risks of anxiety and depression in adolescents, it said.
