Market Chatter: Google Says Canada's Data Law Amendments Fall Short

Alphabet's (GOOG) Google said changes to a proposed Canadian law that would allow police to obtain citizen data from private companies do not address many of its concerns, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing a company spokesperson.

The Canadian government passed amendments to Bill C-22, or the Lawful Access Act, on Wednesday, stating that it will not require the decryption of encrypted data. The metadata retention period was also reduced to six months from one year.

The tech giant said it would continue to engage on the matter, the media outlet added.

Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
