Trump: Sanctions on Russia would halt talks to free Stephen Hubbard

Trump's Truth Social latest posts10-21

On October 21, President Trump said on X that he was negotiating the release of Stephen Hubbard and argued that imposing sanctions on Russia would have brought those talks to a stop.

Trump wrote that “numerous people, who requested that sanctions be immediately imposed on Russia, have called to apologize to President Trump,” saying they did not know he was engaged in efforts to secure Hubbard’s release. He described the effort as “a truly big and important deal for the U.S.”

“If sanctions would have been placed, certainly those negotiations would have come to a complete and total halt,” Trump added, framing the timing of potential sanctions as incompatible with continuing discussions over Hubbard’s release.
