Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) has awarded grants worth SG$14.9 million to four industry projects to strengthen the country's electricity grid, according to a Tuesday statement.

The projects aim to strengthen the resilience and reliability of Singapore's electricity grid as energy sources and demand become more diverse.

EMA awarded SG$8.7 million to two projects by SP PowerAssets under the SP Technology Laboratory, established by EMA and SP Group. The projects will use artificial intelligence and data to optimise grid infrastructure maintenance and renewal, while addressing voltage and power quality challenges arising from increased connections of solar photovoltaic systems and electric vehicle chargers.

Separately, Yokogawa Engineering Asia received SG$4.2 million to develop fast-response services supporting grid stability, including by coordinating batteries, solar inverters, industrial loads and electric vehicles to provide support similar to grid inertia.

Meanwhile, Green Union received SG$2 million to develop strategies for coordinating distributed energy resources, including solar systems, battery storage and electric vehicles, to strengthen grid resilience and maximise existing infrastructure.

The projects will be overseen by EMA's Advanced Energy and Decarbonisation Office under its Decarbonisation Grand Challenge research and development portfolio.
