Binance said Friday it estimates the impact of a security incident at about $6.3 billion, with its initial investigation pointing to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop as a possible entry point. Subsequent investigations uncovered additional points of breach.
The attacker allegedly used access to a service container to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance said it has found no evidence of a wallet private key leak and has frozen about $3 billion in affected assets on-chain.
Binance said it will cover all losses using its SAFU fund and company funds, adding that user funds remain safe. Withdrawals have been temporarily suspended, while deposits remain unaffected.
