GE2025: Parties Unveil Slew of New Faces over the Weekend

Political parties were busy over the weekend announcing new faces in their teams, ahead of the next general election that is widely expected to take place before the middle of the year.

At various events on Saturday (Mar 29) and Sunday, the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) introduced a number of new candidates.

The opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) also announced its intention to contest in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, which is currently helmed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

Singapore Companies in Myanmar, Thailand Largely Unaffected by Earthquake

Companies from Singapore that operate in Myanmar and Thailand said that operations have been largely unaffected by the severe earthquake that occurred in the region on Friday (Mar 28).

The earthquake, which had its epicentre close to the city of Mandalay in Myanmar, was one of the strongest in the South-east Asian nation in a century.

Shocks were also felt in parts of neighbouring Thailand, and caused a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok to collapse.

DBS Foundation Commits S$7.3 Mln for New Programme to Support 6,000 Vulnerable Seniors

In conjunction with SG60, DBS Foundation on Saturday (Mar 29) launched a S$7.3 million programme to support around 6,000 vulnerable seniors across 12 ageing towns over the next two years. 

Under the new programme, beneficiaries will receive two nutritious meals every week, as well as tips on how to eat healthier, from June this year. 

On a monthly basis, the bank’s 14,000-strong workforce will befriend seniors for activities such as games and cook-offs. Staff volunteers will also conduct workshops on key topics including financial and digital literacy and mental wellness every month. 

OCBC Commits S$2 Million to Support the Elderly

About 1,000 seniors gathered at Bukit Canberra on Saturday (Mar 29) morning to participate in a mass workout and learn more about digital banking and scams, among other things, as part of the launch of OCBC SeniorCare programme.

The bank said it will commit over S$2 million to benefit more than 180,000 seniors aged 60 and above over three years. The initiatives will be progressively announced throughout its duration.

Covering four essential pillars – health, wealth, literacy and lifestyle – the project seeks to empower the elderly to age well.

PAP’s Slate of New Faces Shapes up with 30 Likely Names

The People’s Action Party’s latest crop of candidates could be its youngest since the 2011 election, with more women in the mix.

In all, The Straits Times has identified around 30 new faces who could stand in the upcoming election. Among them are senior civil servants, C-suite executives and long-serving grassroots volunteers.

This is in line with the party’s practice of refreshing between a quarter and a third of its slate each term. As Singapore’s next Parliament will have 97 elected members, it is likely to field between 24 and 32 new faces.

According to data from the Land Transport Authority's website, there were 262 new Tesla car registrations in January and February this year in Singapore, up from 137 in the same period last year.
