Broadcom Unveils Thor Ultra Chip to Bolster AI Networking and Challenge Nvidia:
Broadcom launched the Thor Ultra, a networking chip that helps connect thousands of chips in AI systems, making it easier to run big AI models like ChatGPT. It competes with Nvidia’s networking chips and strengthens Broadcom’s role in AI data centers.
On Monday, Broadcom announced a deal to supply 10 gigawatts of custom AI chips to OpenAI starting in 2026, aiming to rival Nvidia’s AI market dominance. Broadcom’s AI business earned $12.2 billion in 2024, with a $10 billion deal for custom chips with another customer.
The company sees a $60-90 billion AI chip market by 2027. The Thor Ultra has double the bandwidth of its previous version and is carefully tested for power and heat. Broadcom designs chips, not servers, but shares designs with customers, who invest $6-10 for every $1 Broadcom spends.
Additionally, Broadcom has a long-standing partnership with Google, designing multiple generations of its Tensor processor, which has generated billions in revenue.
