Nvidia Short Volume Climbs 69% as Smart Money Takes Chip Off Table

$NVIDIA(NVDA)$   saw its short volume jump 69% amid a tug-of-war between retail’s resilient dip-buying appetite and nervous smart money taking chips off the table.

Shares slipped 2.9% Monday, two days ahead of its blockbuster earnings test, as Wall Street skeptics quietly sharpened their pencils. The daily short volume climbed to 12.5 million shares Friday, with institutional block orders flashing net outflows. Short volume metric represents the total number of shares borrowed and sold short during a single trading session, meaning bearish traders are actively betting against near-term price continuation.

Over the weekend, Reuters reported that Nvidia's largest customers were notified that server prices featuring its advanced chips will jump by more than 15% due to soaring memory costs. These upcoming price increases will affect systems equipped with flagship Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell architectures starting early next year, potentially squeezing data center budgets.

The news comes as investors await macroeconomic indicators and upcoming corporate catalysts ahead of the company's fiscal second-quarter financial results scheduled for Wednesday. Analysts, on average, expect Nvidia to report an almost 98% surge in revenue to $92.3 billion in its fiscal second quarter ended July 31, more than doubling its adjusted earnings to $2.09, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Trade overview metrics tracked reveal a net outflow of $280.4 million Monday, with block sell orders coming in different sizes, from small to extra-large, signaling even institutional investors are exiting positions. A net outflow means that more capital left the stock than entered it over the measured timeframe, indicating that institutional players are reducing risk exposure. That added to a net outflow of $230 million last Friday that was driven by large and extra-large institutional block orders.

For retail investors, these institutional outflows suggest that near-term volatility will likely persist. Support levels sit at $193.20, near recent swing lows, while overhead resistance is at $217.20, presenting a classic high-stakes risk environment.

The primary risk for retail participants is that even strong quarterly revenue beats may fail to satisfy a market accustomed to exponential upside. Contrarian analysts note that if management provides conservative future revenue projections during Wednesday's call, the stock could face further downward pressure regardless of historical growth rates.
