OCBC Shares Slide Over 5% as Citi Double-Downgrades Stock to Sell’
SINGAPORE — Shares of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (SGX: O39) tumbled over 5% in morning trading on Wednesday, shedding roughly S$7 billion in market value after Citi Research sharply downgraded the lender directly to a "Sell" rating.
The stock, which opened at S31.55,plungedtoanintraday low of $30.30, making it the most heavily traded counter by value on the Singapore Exchange.
Analysts Warn of Earnings Drag and Margin Squeeze
The sharp sell-off was triggered by a research note from Citi analyst Tan Yong Hong, who cut OCBC’s target price to S$27.50 (down from a valuation based on 2x book value).
Citi flagged three primary head winds expected to weigh on the bank into its upcoming third-quarter financial results:
1. Compression in Net Interest Margin (NIM)
Citi anticipates softer 3Q2026 earnings driven by margin compression. Funding costs are escalating as local fixed deposit (FD) rates rise by 35 to 70 basis points, while loan yields reprice lower. With the 1-month SORA gaining only about 10 basis points, net interest margins are facing immediate downward pressure.
2. Normalizing Wealth Revenues
After an exceptionally strong first half of 2026, wealth management fees and non-interest income are expected to moderate to historical baselines.
3. Capital Ratio Drag
Citi forecasts a quarter-on-quarter drop of approximately 70 basis points in OCBC’s Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio to ~13.3%. A lower CET1 buffer could dampen market expectations for aggressive capital returns and special dividend payouts.
"Into 3Q2026 we expect a combination of flat year-on-year earnings and a decline in CET1 ratio to derail growth optimism for OCBC," noted Tan in his report.
Overstretched Valuations Vulnerable to Re-rating
Prior to the downgrade, OCBC had experienced a steep 46% year-to-date P/E expansion, causing its dividend yield spread over 10-year Singapore Government Securities to narrow to just ~70 bps.
Citi cautioned that this tight valuation buffer leaves the stock exposed to downside risks if Street forecasts undergo downward revisions following 3Q earnings. @TigerEvents @Tiger_SG
