Earnings Season Playbook šŸ“Š 7 Rules I Follow Before Betting on a Report

10-10

With some major earnings coming up over the next few weeks, here’s how I approach earnings season.

1ļøāƒ£ Watch the overall tape first.
If $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ is weak, stocks often struggle to rally on earnings—even when the numbers are outstanding. The market environment matters.

2ļøāƒ£ Be careful when a stock has already run.
If a name is up 10% or more in the roughly 10 days before earnings, I get more cautious. A lot of good news may already be priced in.

3ļøāƒ£ Watch the reaction, not just the numbers.
One of my favorite signals? Bad news comes out, but the stock refuses to drop. That relative strength can hint at a move higher.

4ļøāƒ£ Remember that news follows price.
The narrative often changes after a big move. Price moves first; explanations come later.

5ļøāƒ£ Earnings are about expectations, not simply good or bad results.
A great report can sell off if investors expected even more. A bad report can rip if the market was positioned for something worse.

6ļøāƒ£ Don’t trust the first move.
Especially after hours, thin liquidity can distort the reaction. I care much more about how a stock trades when regular-session liquidity returns. Patience is key post-earnings.

7ļøāƒ£ Don’t try to be a hero with leverage.
Earnings are binary events. Even a strong thesis can be wrong, and leverage can magnify the damage. Don’t risk too much trying to hit a home run on one report.

šŸ“Œ The bottom line: Read the market, understand expectations, study the reaction, and let price action confirm the thesis.

Some major reports are coming over the next few weeks. Be prepared, stay patient, and manage risk.

Markets are always moving - and sometimes, the best move is knowing what works for you.

With Treasury yields, oil prices and rate expectations keeping markets on edge this week, investors are once again thinking carefully about where to position next. There’s no one-size-fits-all choice in investing — and the same goes for Tiger Merch. This month’s hot picks are in, featuring the Tiger Toiletry Bag, Universal Travel Adapter, Tiger Umbrella and more favourites chosen by fellow Tigers.
