Recent news flow for

Applied Digital (APLD)

watchlist

is fundamentally constructive but still high-risk . The bullish case is supported by rapid AI/HPC data-center revenue expansion and potential additional leasing capacity; the bearish case is that reported growth was partly driven by non-recurring construction services, while net losses, financing costs, and long project lead times remain material. The market’s muted post-earnings response suggests investors still require proof that contracted capacity converts into durable, high-margin recurring rent.

Bullish news

Revenue growth accelerated sharply: FY2027 Q1 revenue was reported at USD 341.9 million , up 322% YoY . Data-center leasing revenue was USD 79.1 million , while services and other revenue reached USD 262.8 million ; adjusted operating profit improved to USD 37.8 million from a USD 3.6 million loss a year earlier.

AI/HPC leasing runway remains substantial: Wells Fargo cited roughly 1.4 GW of remaining data-center capacity under development/commercialization, and expected a further approximately 250 MW lease agreement by year-end. It also indicated new lease pricing could be about 15% above the company’s initial agreements—important if realized, because it would improve the economics of future capacity.

East Money

Analyst sentiment is still broadly favorable: Wells Fargo raised its cited target to USD 55 from USD 50, while Craig-Hallum maintained a Buy rating and cited a USD 79 target, reflecting confidence in APLD’s standardized, repeatable data-center expansion model. These are analyst views rather than guarantees of future returns.

East Money

Recent trading showed some positive earnings-related interest: APLD was reported up about 5% in overnight trading following the quarterly update.

Tiger News

Bearish news

Losses widened despite strong revenue: Net loss attributable to common shareholders expanded to USD 237.1 million , or USD 0.82 per share , from USD 18.5 million , or USD 0.07 per share, in the prior-year quarter. Higher interest expense, derivative losses, and a USD 16.1 million loss from discontinued operations were cited as contributors.

East Money

Quality of revenue is a key issue: Needham’s concern was that the revenue beat was driven substantially by one-off data-center support/construction services , rather than entirely by recurring lease revenue. Base rent from HPC data centers did exceed expectations, but the distinction matters because recurring rental cash flow is more durable and generally merits a higher-quality valuation than project services.

East Money

Much of the capacity is not near-term: Needham noted that APLD was marketing around 1.3 GW of capacity, with most expected to come online only in 2028. This creates a long execution window involving customer contracting, construction delivery, power availability, and financing.

East Money

Analyst targets are not uniformly rising: Needham reportedly lowered its target to USD 70 from USD 83 while retaining a Buy rating, indicating that even constructive analysts are revising assumptions around execution or valuation.

Risk notes

Financing and leverage risk: The combination of a large reported net loss and rising interest expense means financing terms and capital availability could materially affect equity value even if demand for AI infrastructure remains strong.

Conversion risk: The bullish thesis depends on turning marketed gigawatt-scale capacity into signed leases and operational facilities; delays or lower-than-expected lease economics would weaken the earnings trajectory.

1.3GW mostly landing in 2028 is a long wait. Interest expense and build risk can eat the story before recurring rent shows up
