ETF indexed to the S&P 500 faces a number of current and long-standing issues that should result in this fund underperforming for some time.

Inflation and a rising dollar should limit most earnings growth of the main large-cap companies making up this index fund.

The overall market is likely to remain range bound for some time as earnings growth flat line, so investors will likely be better off investing in specific stocks or sectors.

Evolution is usually required for survival. Adopting to an environment that a person or investors has become used to usually isn't overly challenging, but learning how to thrive when circumstances change is often more difficult.

The market isn't going straight up anymore. Inflation, rising rates, flatling earnings, and a rising dollar, all have resulted in funds indexed to the S&P 500 (SPY) such as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:VOO) selling off hard over the first six months of this year.

VOOdata by YCharts

VOO is an ETF that is indexed to the S&P 500 which holds the following sectors. The fund allocates assets 24.11% to technology, 15.14% to health care, 12.84% to the financials, 10.24% to consumer cyclicals, 8.82% to the communication sector, 8.26% to industrials, 7.36% to consumer defensives, 4.33% to the energy sector, 3.09% to utilities, 2.9% to the real estate sector, and 2.27% to basic materials. The fund has good expense ratio of .03% and $832.52 billion in assets under management. The fund's 5 biggest holdings are Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), Apple (AAPL), and Tesla (TSLA).

I think this fund should be sold for 3 main reasons; Falling earnings, slowing growth, and a rising dollar. All issues that should remain challenges for most large cap companies through the next year.

With inflation levels still at near record highs and the dollar rising fast against most major currencies over the last several months, earnings expectations for the S&P 500 and most major indexes have fallen as well. S&P 500 earnings have been well below 5-year averages so far with most reports nearly 5% below 4-year average earnings reports when it comes to beating analyst expectations.

Earni gs tBle(An Earnings Table (FactSet))

Even though the Fed recently suggested the future interest rate raises may be slowed as inflation expectations have eased, inflation levels remain near 40-year highs.

There are also a number of signs the US economy is at least going to enter a period of an extended slowdown. Jobless claims have risen to 8-month highs, the number of small businesses defaulting on leases have reached alarming levels with nearly 35% of small businesses having issues paying their rent. Growth estimates for leading emerging market economies such as India continue to fall as well. Consensus estimates for growth in India have already fallen by nearly 2% since the beginning of the year primarily because of inflation and Covid related issues.

The slowing economy and consistently high levels of inflation the companies continue to face have largely resulted in earnings expectation flatlining over the last 6 months.

Inflation and slower expectations for growth in the US and abroad aren't the only issues most large-cap companies that comprise funds such as VOO are facing. The rising dollar is also hurting large-cap companies significantly.

UUPdata by YCharts

The dollar has risen significantly against most major currencies since September of 2021.About 37% of S&P 500 earnings come from outside of the United States, so a 10% rise in the dollar usually equates to a near 4% drop in earnings expectations. The dollar has risen well over 10% against most major currencies just since early May.

With inflation, a slowing economy, and falling earnings expectations likely to continue for some time, the market is more than likely to remain range-bound for an extended period of time in this uncertain environment. With VOO yielding just 1.49%, most investors seeking income or capital gains are likely to be disappointed with the returns this fund can offer over the next year.

Given the Uncertain times and higher than average volatility levels that should be in the market for some time, investors will likely get better returns using more creative strategies that target funds that can thrive even if the market remains range bound. Funds that use a covered call strategy, which is selling calls against the underlying securities the funds hold, are capable of generating significant income even in a market that flatlines. The Amplify CWP Enhanced Dividend Income ETF (DIVO), The Global X S&P 500 Covered Call Exchange Traded Fund (XYLD), and the Global X Russell 2000 Covered Call Fund (RYLD), have all consistently returned at least 9% a year, and each fund offer monthly payouts as well. Since these ETFs use a covered call strategy to generate income that is paid out monthly, these funds perform well even when markets remain range-bound.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
VOO: 3 Reasons To Avoid This Fund Right Now
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nVOO: 3 Reasons To Avoid This Fund Right Now\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-08-04 10:00 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryThe Vanguard ETF indexed to the S&P 500 faces a number of current and long-standing issues that should result in this fund underperforming for some time.Inflation and a rising dollar should ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"VOO":"Vanguard标普500ETF"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4528496-voo-etf-three-reasons-avoid-this-fund-right-now","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1125114842","content_text":"SummaryThe Vanguard ETF indexed to the S&P 500 faces a number of current and long-standing issues that should result in this fund underperforming for some time.Inflation and a rising dollar should limit most earnings growth of the main large-cap companies making up this index fund. The overall market is likely to remain range bound for some time as earnings growth flat line, so investors will likely be better off investing in specific stocks or sectors.Evolution is usually required for survival. survey","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1134868137","media":"Reuters","summary":"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. factory activity gathered speed in early May amid strong domestic demand","content":"
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. factory activity gathered speed in early May amid strong domestic demand, but backlogs of uncompleted work are piling up as manufacturers struggle to find raw materials and labor, boosting costs for both businesses and consumers.
\n
Data firm IHS Markit said on Friday its flash U.S. manufacturing PMI increased to 61.5 in the first half of this month. That was the highest reading since the survey was expanded to cover all manufacturing industries in October 2009, and followed a final reading of 60.5 in April.
\n
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index dipping to 60.2 in early May. A reading above 50 indicates growth in manufacturing, which accounts for 11.9% of the U.S. economy.
\n
Demand shifted to goods from services as the COVID-19 pandemic kept Americans at home, causing supply constraints. The virus also disrupted labor at manufacturers and their suppliers, leading to raw material shortages across industries.
\n
More than a third of the population has been vaccinated, allowing the broader economy to reopen. While that, together with nearly $6 trillion in pandemic relief provided by the government over the past year, is unleashing pent-up demand for services, appetite for goods remains healthy.
\n
According to IHS Markit “manufacturers highlighted that strain on capacity and raw material shortages are expected to last through 2021.” It noted that the supply crunch was raising production costs for manufacturers, who “made efforts to pass higher cost burdens on to clients.”
\n
The IHS Markit survey’s measure of prices paid by manufacturers rose to the highest level since July 2008.
\n
Federal Reserve officials generally view the supply chain bottlenecks as transitory and expect them to temporarily drive inflation above the U.S. central bank’s 2% target. There is also acknowledgment that the bottlenecks could take longer to ease.
\n
Minutes of the Fed’s April 27-28 policy meeting published on Wednesday showed “a number of participants remarked that supply chain bottlenecks and input shortages may not be resolved quickly,” and that this “could put upward pressure on prices beyond this year. These officials also “noted that in some industries, supply chain disruptions appeared to be more persistent than originally anticipated.”
\n
The raw material squeeze is most evident in the automobile and electronics industries, where a global semiconductor shortage has forced production cuts.
\n
According to IHS Market, backlogs of work accumulated early this month at the fastest pace in 14 years.
\n
The survey said its measure of new orders increased and that though factories tried to recruit more workers, the pace of hiring was the slowest in five months.
\n
Booming demand also boosted the services sector, which bore the brunt of the pandemic. The IHS Markit’s flash services sector PMI surged to 70.1, the highest since the series started in October 2009, from a final reading of 64.7 in April.
\n
The services sector accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
\n
The strength in manufacturing and the services industries lifted overall business activity. The survey’s flash composite PMI output Index, which tracks the manufacturing and services sectors, rose to 68.1 from a final reading of 63.5 in April.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
U.S. manufacturing activity powers ahead in early May; work backlogs rising - survey
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nU.S. manufacturing activity powers ahead in early May; work backlogs rising - survey\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Reuters
\n
2021-05-21 21:52
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. factory activity gathered speed in early May amid strong domestic demand, but backlogs of uncompleted work are piling up as manufacturers struggle to find raw materials and labor, boosting costs for both businesses and consumers.
\n
Data firm IHS Markit said on Friday its flash U.S. manufacturing PMI increased to 61.5 in the first half of this month. In addition to near-zero short-term interest rates, the Fed has also been absorbing $120 billion a month in U.S. Treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities.
\n
The policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee on Wednesdaykept both of those policy measures unchanged. Powell told reporters in the afternoon that the Fed remains a “long way” from raising rates.
\n
Powell said the central bank is still keeping an eye on some financial stability risks, adding that rising home prices are catching some attention.
\n
The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller national home price indexreached a 15-year high in February, according to data released Tuesday.
\n
Powell said the higher prices are due to constraints on supply, with homebuilders unable to keep up with demand. He added that he does not see financial stability concerns in those prices, despite their history with triggering previous crises in the U.S.
\n
“We really don’t see that here,” Powell said Wednesday. “We don’t see bad loans and unsustainable prices and that kind of thing.”
","source":"lsy1584348713084","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; In addition to near-zero short-term interest rates, the Fed has also been absorbing $120 billion a month in U.S. Treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities.\nThe policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee on Wednesdaykept both of those policy measures unchanged. Powell told reporters in the afternoon that the Fed remains a “long way” from raising rates.\nPowell said the central bank is still keeping an eye on some financial stability risks, adding that rising home prices are catching some attention.\nThe S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller national home price indexreached a 15-year high in February, according to data released Tuesday.\nPowell said the higher prices are due to constraints on supply, with homebuilders unable to keep up with demand. He added that he does not see financial stability concerns in those prices, despite their history with triggering previous crises in the U.S.\n“We really don’t see that here,” Powell said Wednesday. “We don’t see bad loans and unsustainable prices and that kind of thing.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":823,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":356568091,"gmtCreate":1616798736613,"gmtModify":1704799104224,"author":{"id":"3569112024977235","authorId":"3569112024977235","name":"CHANDRA92","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3809b391a8626f4fd3ad32f7c3713607","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3569112024977235","idStr":"3569112024977235"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"??//<a will take place in June, which will likely help year over year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter.
\n
\n
Amazonshares climbed more than 3.5% in extended trading Thursday after the company released its first-quarter earnings, beating Wall Street’s expectations for earnings and revenue.
\n

\n
Here’s how the e-commerce giant fared, relative to analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv:
\n
\n
Earnings:$15.79 per share vs. $9.54 per share expected
\n
Revenue:$108.52 billion vs. $104.47 billion expected
\n
\n
Few companies have benefited from the pandemic-fueled surge of online shoppingas much as Amazon. Its first-quarter results showed the company’s business continues to be buoyed by the pandemic, with sales soaring 44% year-over-year to $108.5 billion.
\n
Amazon’s guidance for the second quarter implies that it expects the momentum to continue, which should help allay investor fears that business could slow in a post-pandemic environment. The company expects to post revenue between $110 billion and $116 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s projection $108.6 billion.
\n
Crucially, Amazon confirmed in its guidance that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year-over-year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter. Typically, Amazon’s annual, two-day discount bonanza takes place in July, but the company postponed the event to October last year amid pandemic-related uncertainty.
\n
When asked about the Prime Day timing, CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with investors: “In many areas, July is vacation month, so it might be better for customers, sellers and vendors to experiment with a different time period. We believe that it might be better timing later in [the second quarter], so that’s what we’re testing this year.”
\n
Outside of its core retail segment, Amazon’s cloud-computing and advertising businesses continue to boom. Amazon Web Servicessawnet sales of $13.5 billion during the quarter, up 32% year over year. Amazon doesn’t disclose advertising sales, but it’s included in the company’s “Other” category, which saw its revenues grow 77% year over year to $6.9 billion.
\n
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also gave a rare glimpse into how the company’s streaming business has fared during the pandemic, as stuck-at-home consumers relied on online entertainment to keep busy. “As Prime Video turns 10, over 175 million Prime members have streamed shows and movies in the past year, and streaming hours are up more than 70% year over year,” he said.
\n
Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, is a key offering of the company’s Prime subscription service, which costs $119 a year and includes a range of other benefits like free, two-day shipping. Bezos disclosed earlier this month that the company now has 200 million Prime subscribers, 50 million more than it had at the start of 2020.
\n
Physical stores revenue, which includes Whole Foods Market and other brick-and-mortar offerings like Amazon Books, continued to fall. Sales slumped 16% to $3.9 billion. The category excludes online delivery, Olsavsky said.
\n
During the quarter, Amazon’s sales grew faster internationally than they did in North America. International revenue surged 60% year over year, more than any other segment, while North America revenue climbed 40%.
\n
As expected, Amazon will incur fewer costs this year related to coronavirus safety measures. Operating income is forecast to be between $4.5 billion and $8 billion in the second quarter, assuming $1.5 billion of costs related to Covid-19. That’s in line with what Amazon executives predicted last quarter.
\n
AmazonsaidWednesday it would spend more than $1 billion on raising wages for over half a million of its U.S. operations workers. On a call with reporters, Olsavsky said it decided to move up the pay increase from the fall to this spring as volumes remain just as strong as they were at the beginning of the pandemic.
\n
Olsavsky declined to comment on Amazon’s CEO transition plans, which will come into play once Bezossteps down in the third quarter. Bezos will turn the helm over to AWS CEO Andy Jassy and assume the role of executive chairman of Amazon’s board.
","source":"lsy1609915699154","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon sales surge 44% as it smashes earnings expectations
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAmazon sales surge 44% as it smashes earnings expectations\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 06:14 GMT+8 CNBC\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Amazon released first-quarter results on Thursday that trounced analysts’ expectations.\nThe company confirmed that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year over year ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMZN":"亚马逊"},"source_url":"https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/29/amazon-amzn-earnings-q1-2021.html","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1188611661","content_text":"Amazon released first-quarter results on Thursday that trounced analysts’ expectations.\nThe company confirmed that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year over year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter.\n\nAmazonshares climbed more than 3.5% in extended trading Thursday after the company released its first-quarter earnings, beating Wall Street’s expectations for earnings and revenue.\n\nHere’s how the e-commerce giant fared, relative to analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv:\n\nEarnings:$15.79 per share vs. $9.54 per share expected\nRevenue:$108.52 billion vs. $104.47 billion expected\n\nFew companies have benefited from the pandemic-fueled surge of online shoppingas much as Amazon.
