inflation, infrastructure.\n
\n
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will use his two days of congressional testimony this week to stress that he is in no rush to exit the central bank's easy policy stance.
\n
\"Patience will remain the watchword,\" said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.
\n
The strong consumer price inflation report will lead to some more pointed questions, especially from Republicans eager to blame Democrats for the rise.
\n
Headline CPI beat expectations in June , rising 0.9% after a 0.6% jump in May.
\n
But Powell is not going to rewrite his testimony due to that one report, economists said.
\n
\"If the last two inflation prints did not shift his views in a meaningful way, it is hard to see why this one will,\" said Neil Dutta, head of economics at Renaissance Macro Research.
\n
\"Powell's main job at this point will be to push back against the regional Fed presidents, who will only get louder in their calls to remove policy accommodation,\" Dutta wrote in a note to clients.
\n
The Fed is holding rates close to zero and buying $120 billion of Treasurys and mortgage-related bonds each month to keep interest rates low.
\n
Minutes of the Fed's June meeting show that officials had a lengthy discussion about when to slow down, or taper, the asset purchases. That is the likely first step in backing away from its easy policy stance.
\n
In general, economists think the Fed will announce its plans on tapering as soon as September and could start to taper by year's end. But economists don't agree on the timing.
\n
\"Powell doesn't want to make news, because if he's making news then it's because he said something different, something surprising,\" said Vine Reinhart, Mellon's chief economist, in an interview on Bloomberg Radio.
\n
\"He wants to say 'everything is on course.' They are worried about the pandemic, they're pleased with unfolding economic data, but there is a long way to go,\" Reinhart said.
\n
In a possible preview of Powell's message, San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said Tuesday she was unfazed by the strong June CPI report and that higher inflation was temporary. She said tapering could come at the end of the year.
\n
As always, lawmakers will be seeking to use Powell to score political points.
\n
Stephen Myrow, managing director of Beacon Policy Advisors, said moderate Democrats are worried that Congress is doing too little on infrastructure and will \"throw softballs\" to Powell about maintaining his dovish stance.
\n
\"I think Powell shares more in common with the Democrats than he does Republicans,\" Myrow said.
\n
Republicans will argue Democrat policies such as extra benefits for unemployed workers have actually slowed the overall recovery and increased the inflation risk, Myrow said in an interview.
\n
Stocks closed lower on Tuesday ahead of Powell's testimony, with the S&P 500 index off 0.4%.
\n
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note moved up to 1.423%, still well down from the high of 1.75% reached at the end of March.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The company has about 600 reservations for tickets on future flights, with those tickets sold largely between $200,000 and $250,000 each.\nVirgin Galactic will have three different sales offerings, starting at $450,000 a seat, for space tourists: A single seat purchase, packaged seats for couples, friends or family, or opportunities to book entire flights. The company noted that sales will initially prioritize Virgin Galactic’s “significant list of early hand-raisers,” with a “follow-on priority list” to be opened for new customers.\nIts spacecraft VSS Unity was designed to carry six passengers — in addition to two pilots — but the vehicle is now outfitted to carry four, with Virgin Galactic confirming that its spaceflight with Branson represented a “fully crewed” launch.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SPCE":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":368,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":886115111,"gmtCreate":1631575078433,"gmtModify":1676530577028,"author":{"id":"3572135781937726","authorId":"3572135781937726","name":"Llabtaem","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a148218eb7e546c0ae2bf9b1376bb6f0","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572135781937726","authorIdStr":"3572135781937726"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Analysts tracked by FactSet were expecting earnings per share of $1.01.

Apple's $(AAPL)$ revenue for the quarter rose to $81.43 billion from $59.69 billion, while analysts had been anticipating $73.34 billion. The biggest positive surprise came in the iPhone segment, which exceeded revenue expectations by more than $5 billion.

The smartphone giant delivered $39.57 billion in iPhone revenue, up from $26.42 billion a year prior and far ahead of the FactSet consensus, which called for $34.19 billion.

Once again, Apple declined to provide a numerical revenue forecast for the current period but offered \"directional insights.\"

Apple expects \"very strong double-digit\" year-over-year revenue growth in the September quarter, though with a growth rate not as high as the 36% seen in the June quarter, according to Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri. The company anticipates a less favorable impact from foreign exchange, a return to \"more typical\" growth for the services business, and a greater impact from supply constraints relative to the June quarter.

Though the company was able to limit the impact of supply constraints in the June quarter such that the impact was slightly below the low end of the $3 billion to $4 billion that executives had originally projected, Apple expects a higher number in the September quarter, with impacts mainly to the iPhone and iPad businesses.

Chief Executive Tim Cook noted that Apple \"is paying more for freight costs than I would like to pay,\" though component costs are falling in aggregate.

Shares were off 2.2% in after-hours trading.

The company had been seeing strong performances from its iPad and Mac businesses amid the pandemic as the remote-work boom fueled demand for those devices, and Apple posted growth once again in the June period. Apple generated $8.24 billion in Mac revenue for the quarter, up from $7.08 billion a year prior, as well as $7.37 billion in iPad revenue, up from $6.59 billion a year ago. Analysts were projecting $7.86 billion and $7.17 billion, respectively.

Apple saw revenue for its services unit climb to $17.49 billion from $13.16 billion a year ago, above estimates for $16.26 billion. The services revenue total was an all-time record.

The company posted $8.78 billion in revenue from its wearables, home and accessories segment. That compares with $6.45 billion a year prior and the $7.83 billion FactSet consensus.

Shares of Apple have gained just over 10% so far this year as the Dow Jones Industrial Average , of which Apple is a component, has risen upwards of 14%.

-Emily Bary; 415-439-6400; AskNewswires@dowjones.com

\n \n

$(END)$ Dow Jones Newswires

July 27, 2021 18:05 ET (22:05 GMT)

Copyright (c) 2021 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple profit nearly doubles as iPhone sales boom, but company projects growth slowdown
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple profit nearly doubles as iPhone sales boom, but company projects growth slowdown\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-07-28 06:05
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
MW Apple profit nearly doubles as iPhone sales boom, but company projects growth slowdown

By Emily Bary

Supply constraints and foreign exchange expected to drive lower growth rate in September quarter

Apple Inc. just posted its strongest June quarter ever, with a near doubling of profits and a huge revenue beat for its iPhone business, though shares slipped in the extended session after the company projected slower growth for the current period.

The company posted fiscal third-quarter net income of $21.74 billion, or $1.30 a share, up from $11.25 billion, or 65 cents a share, a year earlier.
