But ARK Innovation ishaving a rough 2021: After rising another 26% by mid-February, the $22 billion ETF has tumbled over the past six weeks, and is now down 9% year to date. Investors need to understand the dramatic portfolio changes that have occurred in the past year to see what they own and determine the fund’s role in their portfolios.</p><p>For starters: A year ago, ARK Innovation was a small-company fund. Today, it’s solidly mid-cap, with 51% of its assets in large-company stocks. The average market cap of its holdings has increased from $5 billion last March to $39 billion by the end of February. That, in large part, is due to how much many holdings have run up. Notably, top holdingTesla(TSLA) has returned 500% in the past year even after the recent pullback.</p><p>Many active funds have limitations on the size of companies they can buy and continue to own. ARK Innovation doesn’t have such constraints. It’s open to stocks up and down the capitalization spectrum—from the $594 billion Tesla to the $1 billionCerus(CERS). “We don’t really look at market caps. We are pretty agnostic to that,” says Ren Leggi, ARK’s client portfolio manager. “We’re looking at where innovation takes us.”</p><p>The growth of its existing holdings only partially explains the fund’s tilt toward larger stocks. Over the past few months, ARK Innovation has also been selling shares in smaller-cap firms, many in biotech, includingOrganovo Holdings(ONVO),Seres Therapeutics(MCRB), Compugen(CGEN), andEditas Medicine(EDIT).</p><p>Meanwhile, the fund has added a significant amount of large-cap internet stocks likePayPal Holdings(PYPL), Shopify(SHOP),Zoom Video Communications(ZM); and foreign firms such as Tencent Holdings(TCEHY), Baidu(BIDU),Sea(SE), and Nintendo(NTDOY). The ETF owned none of those names last July.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e1bf566255ea478e6111c62695a5ade\" tg-width=\"677\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">The recent trading has shifted ARK Innovation’s sector composition as well. In March 2020, biotech and diagnostics were the largest industries in the fund, making up 22% and 15% of the portfolio, respectively. By the end of February, biotech only made up 14%, and diagnostics, 8%.</p><p>Meanwhile, ARK Innovation has increased assets in internet and software stocks—from 6% of each in March 2020, to 15% and 9% as of February. Shopify, which wasn’t in ARK Innovation as of last October, is now the eighth-largest stock in the fund with a 3.1% weight.</p><p>Still, compared to its peers in the mid-cap growth category, ARK Innovation is relatively heavy on healthcare and light on technology, says Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist at Morningstar.</p><p>Some suspect the shift toward bigger companies is the result of ARK Innovation’s unprecedented growth. The fund attracted $16 billion in new assets in the past year. If that money was invested in smaller companies, it couldquickly bump up ARK’s stakein them to perilous levels. From that perspective, putting that money in more liquid large-cap stocks seems a safer option. “The bigger they get, the more difficult it is for them to establish meaningful positions in smaller-cap stocks,” Arnott says.</p><p>ARK denies that recent trading decisions have anything to do with capacity, saying those moves are driven by conviction, valuation, and tactical considerations. For example, ARK Innovation exited DNA sequencing firmIllumina(ILMN)—once its second-largest holding behind Tesla—and added rivalPacific Biosciences of California(PACB), because it sees a shift of disruption from short-read to long-read genomic sequencing, says Leggi. It sold other names because they’d become too expensive compared to peers.</p><p>The firm has also been preparing for a market correction since last year, says Leggi, and large-cap additions were meant to offer downside protection and cash-like reserves to buy high-conviction names at low prices during a downturn.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0c6368f23c2e33e58f63f2868e48ee2b\" tg-width=\"644\" tg-height=\"344\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">A shift in portfolio characteristics—from small-cap to mid-cap, more healthcare to more internet—means ARK Innovation will likely have less volatility down the road. Many biotechs lack cash flow or revenue until they get a product approved, while internet companies usually have some products or services on the market.</p><p>This could mean ARK’s performance this year will look a lot more like 2019 than 2020. “It’s still a very aggressive growth fund,” says Arnott, “But it can be more difficult for a fund to sustain its performance edge as it gains assets.”</p><p>Leggi says larger companies don’t necessarily mean less growth: ARK just released its updatedprice target for Tesla at $3,000 by 2025, 385% higher than today’s price. In fact, in certain industries where earlier and larger disruptors have already established themselves, it would be hard for small rivals to compete, says Leggi.</p><p>“There have been a number of smaller EV [electric vehicle] manufacturers going public through SPACs,” he says, referring to special purpose acquisition companies, essentially shell companies used to bring private companies public. “We don’t invest in them, because we don’t think they’re well-positioned to be the new leader because of how capital-intensive it is. Tesla is far ahead. That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.</p>\n<p>Those rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.</p>\n<p>Moreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/33c354045da9bf1b0b8bbe93d0eb9e43\" tg-width=\"947\" tg-height=\"673\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>The future of $</b></p>\n<p>Tesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.</p>\n<p>“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in&nbsp;bitcoin&nbsp;and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.</p>\n<p>The eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc.&nbsp;and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.</p>\n<p>Musk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.</p>\n<p><b>Writing on the wall</b></p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Wall Street Journal notes&nbsp;that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings&nbsp;about 20 years ago.</p>\n<p>PayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. PayPal&nbsp;back in November opened up its cryptocurrency platform to all U.S. customers after conducting a more narrow rollout.</p>\n<p>Moreover, several high-profile Wall Street investors, including Stanley Druckenmiller and Paul Tudor Jones, have embraced bitcoin. That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.\nThose rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.\nMoreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.\nBitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.\n\nThe future of $\nTesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.\nBitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.\n“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in bitcoin and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.\nThe eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc. and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.\nMusk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.\nWriting on the wall\nThe Wall Street Journal notes that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings about 20 years ago.\nPayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. But ARK Innovation ishaving a rough 2021: After rising another 26% by mid-February, the $22 billion ETF has tumbled over the past six weeks, and is now down 9% year to date. Investors need to understand the dramatic portfolio changes that have occurred in the past year to see what they own and determine the fund’s role in their portfolios.</p><p>For starters: A year ago, ARK Innovation was a small-company fund. Today, it’s solidly mid-cap, with 51% of its assets in large-company stocks. The average market cap of its holdings has increased from $5 billion last March to $39 billion by the end of February. That, in large part, is due to how much many holdings have run up. Notably, top holdingTesla(TSLA) has returned 500% in the past year even after the recent pullback.</p><p>Many active funds have limitations on the size of companies they can buy and continue to own. ARK Innovation doesn’t have such constraints. It’s open to stocks up and down the capitalization spectrum—from the $594 billion Tesla to the $1 billionCerus(CERS). “We don’t really look at market caps. We are pretty agnostic to that,” says Ren Leggi, ARK’s client portfolio manager. “We’re looking at where innovation takes us.”</p><p>The growth of its existing holdings only partially explains the fund’s tilt toward larger stocks. Over the past few months, ARK Innovation has also been selling shares in smaller-cap firms, many in biotech, includingOrganovo Holdings(ONVO),Seres Therapeutics(MCRB), Compugen(CGEN), andEditas Medicine(EDIT).</p><p>Meanwhile, the fund has added a significant amount of large-cap internet stocks likePayPal Holdings(PYPL), Shopify(SHOP),Zoom Video Communications(ZM); and foreign firms such as Tencent Holdings(TCEHY), Baidu(BIDU),Sea(SE), and Nintendo(NTDOY). Shopify, which wasn’t in ARK Innovation as of last October, is now the eighth-largest stock in the fund with a 3.1% weight.</p><p>Still, compared to its peers in the mid-cap growth category, ARK Innovation is relatively heavy on healthcare and light on technology, says Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist at Morningstar.</p><p>Some suspect the shift toward bigger companies is the result of ARK Innovation’s unprecedented growth. The fund attracted $16 billion in new assets in the past year. If that money was invested in smaller companies, it couldquickly bump up ARK’s stakein them to perilous levels. From that perspective, putting that money in more liquid large-cap stocks seems a safer option. “The bigger they get, the more difficult it is for them to establish meaningful positions in smaller-cap stocks,” Arnott says.</p><p>ARK denies that recent trading decisions have anything to do with capacity, saying those moves are driven by conviction, valuation, and tactical considerations. But history shows that when yields are rising “for the right reasons,” tech shares and cyclically sensitive stocks tend to thrive, according to Raymond James.</p><p>The right reasons are “improving economic growth and a ‘healthy’ rise in inflation,” said Larry Adam, chief investment officer for the private client group at Raymond James, in a weekend note. And those reasons have driven the yield on the 10-year Treasury note&nbsp;to just shy of 1.4%, or&nbsp;about their highest&nbsp;in a year. Yields also are coming off their largest weekly rise in six weeks.</p><p>Adam highlighted the chart below, which breaks down the average annualized performance of each of the S&amp;P 500’s 11 sectors and the percentage of time each sector outperforms the S&amp;P 500 in a rising rate environment.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/79c934a97bed5bf56c97af1767cd874e\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"564\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>RAYMOND JAMES</span></p><p>“Since 1990, during rising rate environments, the more cyclical sectors have outperformed,” Adam noted. “The average annualized outperformance relative to the S&amp;P 500 and the percentage of time it outperforms the S&amp;P 500 is largest for the tech, consumer discretionary and industrials sectors — three of our preferred sectors,” while higher dividend-yielding sectors like utilities, real estate and consumer staples tend to underperform.</p><p>Stocks wereputting in a mixed performanceon Monday, with the Nasdaq-100,down 2.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite,down 2.5%, suffering the steepest declines. Both are tilted toward large-cap, tech-oriented stocks.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;was positive, while the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;was off 0.8%.</p><p>The rise in yields is being blamed in large part on expectations for a potential surge in inflation thanks to ramped up government spending and ultraloose monetary policy. Fears that the Federal Reserve could move to begin withdrawing some liquidity sooner than anticipated is seen helping to unsettle stocks, analysts said.</p><p>But Adam argued that inflation not only is unlikely to “short circuit” the rally, it may be a welcome development for stock-market bulls.</p><p>“When analyzing how the S&amp;P 500 performed under varying levels of core inflation, equities performed above-average in an environment where core inflation was between 1-4%,” he wrote.</p><p>Inflation at those levels is generally considered healthy when it coincides with improving economic activity, Adam said. The reason is because companies have pricing power, allowing them to lift prices, while also reaping the benefits from productivity gains, which helps to boost earnings growth.</p><p>Raymond James expects core inflation to be around 2%. But history shows that when yields are rising “for the right reasons,” tech shares and cyclically sensitive stocks tend to thrive, according to Raymond James.The right reasons are “improving economic growth and a ‘healthy’ rise in inflation,” said Larry Adam, chief investment officer for the private client group at Raymond James, in a weekend note. And those reasons have driven the yield on the 10-year Treasury note to just shy of 1.4%, or about their highest in a year. Yields also are coming off their largest weekly rise in six weeks.Adam highlighted the chart below, which breaks down the average annualized performance of each of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors and the percentage of time each sector outperforms the S&P 500 in a rising rate environment.RAYMOND JAMES“Since 1990, during rising rate environments, the more cyclical sectors have outperformed,” Adam noted. “The average annualized outperformance relative to the S&P 500 and the percentage of time it outperforms the S&P 500 is largest for the tech, consumer discretionary and industrials sectors — three of our preferred sectors,” while higher dividend-yielding sectors like utilities, real estate and consumer staples tend to underperform.Stocks wereputting in a mixed performanceon Monday, with the Nasdaq-100,down 2.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite,down 2.5%, suffering the steepest declines. Both are tilted toward large-cap, tech-oriented stocks.The Dow Jones Industrial Average was positive, while the S&P 500 was off 0.8%.The rise in yields is being blamed in large part on expectations for a potential surge in inflation thanks to ramped up government spending and ultraloose monetary policy. Fears that the Federal Reserve could move to begin withdrawing some liquidity sooner than anticipated is seen helping to unsettle stocks, analysts said.But Adam argued that inflation not only is unlikely to “short circuit” the rally, it may be a welcome development for stock-market bulls.“When analyzing how the S&P 500 performed under varying levels of core inflation, equities performed above-average in an environment where core inflation was between 1-4%,” he wrote.Inflation at those levels is generally considered healthy when it coincides with improving economic activity, Adam said. The reason is because companies have pricing power, allowing them to lift prices, while also reaping the benefits from productivity gains, which helps to boost earnings growth.Raymond James expects core inflation to be around 2%. That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.</p>\n<p>Those rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.</p>\n<p>Moreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/33c354045da9bf1b0b8bbe93d0eb9e43\" tg-width=\"947\" tg-height=\"673\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>The future of $</b></p>\n<p>Tesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.</p>\n<p>“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in&nbsp;bitcoin&nbsp;and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.</p>\n<p>The eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc.&nbsp;and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.</p>\n<p>Musk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.</p>\n<p><b>Writing on the wall</b></p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Wall Street Journal notes&nbsp;that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings&nbsp;about 20 years ago.</p>\n<p>PayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. PayPal&nbsp;back in November opened up its cryptocurrency platform to all U.S. customers after conducting a more narrow rollout.</p>\n<p>Moreover, several high-profile Wall Street investors, including Stanley Druckenmiller and Paul Tudor Jones, have embraced bitcoin. Famed investor Bill Miller, founder of Miller Value Partners, in&nbsp;a letter to clients&nbsp;earlier this month&nbsp;published on the firm’s website, reaffirmed his bullish outlook on bitcoin.</p>\n<p>In other words, Tesla and Musk may be among the biggest to wade into the crypto pool, but a growing cadre of investors are starting to view the volatile digital-ledger-backed cryptos as a bona fide asset.</p>\n<p>“Corporate adoption takes another leap forward with Tesla announcement,” writes Devin Ryan, analyst at JMP Securities in a Monday research note.</p>\n<p>The researcher, along with fellow analyst Brian McKenna, noted they “believe the building ‘network effect’ around bitcoin is moving the broader crypto asset class into the mainstream, and with many hundreds of billions of dollars of value in infrastructure supporting the asset class, we see the already substantial (and growing) vested interest in its success as bullish for the industry.”</p>\n<p>On Tuesday, bitcoin touched a record high around $48,000 before pulling back, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average,the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;and the Nasdaq Composite&nbsp;indexes have seen relatively tepid trade on the day.</p>","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.\nThose rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.\nMoreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.\nBitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.\n\nThe future of $\nTesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.\nBitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.\n“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in bitcoin and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.\nThe eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc. and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.\nMusk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.\nWriting on the wall\nThe Wall Street Journal notes that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings about 20 years ago.\nPayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution.
