Even as the S&P 500 careens to fresh lows, it’s stuck below its March peak and actually declined in the aftermath of last week’s hot inflation report. At the same time the Federal Reserve’s disruptive policy-tightening campaign is fueling the wildest price swings for US large cap companies since the global financial crisis. The thinking goes that the winners and losers in the S&P 500 have become more pronounced in a world where corporate fundamentals matter. But index volatility is proving less severe, as price moves of its constituents offset each other, while demand for hedges remains muted due to low investor positioning. For whatever reason this short-index-long-single-stock-volatility trade is working and may prove particularly lucrative this earnings season. The likes of PepsiCo Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have been posting notable gains after better-than-expected reports while disappointments such as Morgan Stanley are getting punished.“We haven’t seen any panic protection buying that will drive volatility much higher,” said Daniel Danon, managing director at Assenagon Asset Management, whose Assenagon Alpha Volatility fund is up 12% this year. “So your short leg is helping your long leg to perform.”The VIX, which tracks the cost of S&P 500 options, has stayed at elevated levels relative to its five-year average, but it’s yet to revisit 2022 highs of above 35 points. At the same time individual members in the S&P 500 have been moving the most since the global financial crisis, according to Societe Generale SA.While the Fed’s hike-at-all-costs policy stance has ignited fear and loathing for investors in bonds and currencies, the cost of one-month bearish put options on the equity benchmark versus bullish calls has slipped anew to the lowest since 2017. That suggests limited investor appetite to hedge at the index level. Why that’s the case despite a prolonged drawdown has become a hot topic among market watchers of late. Some point out that money managers have slashed equity exposure to multi-year lows, itself a defensive stance that requires less protection. Others say a relatively orderly decline has made options hedging less rewarding than usual, prompting traders to short equity futures as an alternative way to buffer against losses.A relatively well behaved VIX stands out at a time when the Fed’s resolve to crush inflation at decade highs with tighter policy is rocking the underbelly of of US equities. Some oil producers have doubled their share prices in this year’s supply-side mayhem while Big Tech names like Netflix Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. have plunged big time in a rate-sensitive selloff that’s now casting a shadow over the business cycle.“It’s about rotation between sectors at the moment,” said Stephen Crewe, whose Fulcrum Equity Dispersion Fund is up 10% this year. The London-based manager is positioning for continued volatility among companies in the technology and energy sectors. “No one really knows where the US economy is going to end up,” he said. The strategy, which has cooled of late after notching outsize gains earlier in the year, is deployed mostly by volatility hedge funds and banks packaging it into systematic strategies. Versions of the trade may buy options on a basket of stocks while others, like those managed by Assenagon and Fulcrum, are more selective. Some are neutral to volatility, whereas others are buying more options than they sell. With expected swings embedded in index-level option prices relatively contained, it’s been harder for typical derivatives hedges to make money, with the payoff hinging more on getting the strike price or market timing right. For instance, an S&P 500-tracking portfolio that’s added calls on the VIX -- which is supposed to buffer portfolios against a sudden outbreak in price swings -- has suffered a four-percentage-point drag on performance, a Cboe index shows.Yet going forward, the big challenge for dispersion traders is hiding in plain sight: Supersized Fed rate hikes risk causing a sudden collapse in economic growth that may in turn spur a big jump in index volatility.Still for now, institutions appear to have little appetite for adding market hedges, according to Michael Purves, founder of Tallbacken Capital Advisors. He recommends betting on the VIX to fall till the end of the year.“Perhaps yields can creep higher, but not in a shocking way the way they did when they pierced 4% in September,” he wrote in a note. “Markets appear to have processed the notion that there is little doubt that a Fed pivot is not close at hand.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"VIX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":395,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9096211469,"gmtCreate":1644396287381,"gmtModify":1676533920957,"author":{"id":"3581040597309122","authorId":"3581040597309122","name":"Memem123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d216ffc252fa6abafef04dead4b03e32","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581040597309122","authorIdStr":"3581040597309122"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"J","listText":"J","text":"J","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9096211469","repostId":"1134517507","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1134517507","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1644395835,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1134517507?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-09 16:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nvidia Earnings Preview: What to Watch on Feb. 16","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1134517507","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Nvidia is slated to report its fourth-quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2022 (essentially the","content":"

Nvidia is slated to report its fourth-quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2022 (essentially the November 2021 through January 2022 period) after the market close on Wednesday, Feb. 16. An analyst conference call is scheduled for the same day at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Investors in the graphics chip specialist will probably be approaching the report with optimism. The company has beaten Wall Street's consensus earnings estimate in at least the past six consecutive quarters. In addition, investors will be eager to hear what management has to say on the earnings call about the Omniverse, which is Nvidia's platform for enabling companies to build out their metaverses.

Here's what to watch in the company's upcoming report.

Nvidia's key quarterly numbers

Here are benchmarks to use to gauge the tech company's results.

DATA SOURCES: NVIDIA AND YAHOO! Growth was driven by record revenue in the gaming, data center, and professional visualization platforms. EPS on the basis of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) soared 83% year over year to $0.97, and adjusted EPS surged 60% to $1.17.

Wall Street had been looking for fiscal Q3 revenue and adjusted EPS of $6.82 billion and $1.11, respectively, so Nvidia surpassed both expectations.

Platform performance

Here's how the platforms performed last quarter:

DATA SOURCE: NVIDIA. OEM = ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER; NOT A TARGET MARKET PLATFORM. YOY = YEAR OVER YEAR. QOQ = QUARTER OVER QUARTER.

As always, investors should focus on the two largest platforms. Nvidia's overall results are driven by results in its gaming and data center businesses. In the first, second, and third quarters of fiscal 2022, these two platforms together accounted for 85%, 83%, and 87%, respectively, of the company's total revenue.

Don't sweat the results of the OEM and other category

In recent quarters, a contributor to Nvidia's OEM category has been sales of its cryptocurrency mining processor (CMP), which launched in early calendar year 2021. Reiterating what I wrote in last quarter's earnings preview, investors shouldn't pay much attention to results in OEM and other because this category's sales can be expected to fluctuate considerably due to the extreme volatility in the cryptocurrency market.

Putting some numbers next to the prior statement, last quarter, sales of the CMP added $105 million to Nvidia's coffers, down from $266 million in the prior quarter. And on last quarter's earnings call, CFO Colette Kress said, "We also expect our CMP product to decline quarter-on-quarter to very negligible levels in Q4."

But pay attention to the discussion about the metaverse

Nvidia's quarterly earnings calls (and its earnings releases, for that matter) put those of most other companies to shame, so I highly recommend that investors listen to these calls. It's a sure thing that the top management team will discuss the Omniverse, Nvidia's platform for enabling companies to build their metaverses.

Guidance

Management's guidance, relative to Wall Street's expectations, will likely be the biggest factor in the market's reaction to Nvidia's upcoming report.

So investors should know that for the first quarter of fiscal 2023 (essentially the February to April 2022 period), analysts are currently modeling for adjusted EPS of $1.17 on revenue of $7.28 billion, representing year-over-year growth of 29% and 29%, respectively.

Wall Street’s reaction to death of Nvidia-Arm deal

The news that Nvidia Corp. will drop its pursuit of chip designer Arm Ltd. came as no surprise to Wall Street.

The deal was widely regarded as dead back in January, and all that remained was for Nvidia to publicly admit it.

“We have consistently noted the deal was unlikely to be completed — a view that we believe was widely accepted — due to regulatory or competitive factors” since the deal was announced, Raymond James analyst Chris Caso wrote, a reaction that was repeated over many analyst notes.

Citi Research analyst Atif Malik, who has a buy rating and a $350 price target, also said Wall Street “largely expected that the deal would not pass regulatory muster,” while bringing up Nvidia’s plans to move into CPUs, which it had announced at about the same time as the Arm merger.

Analysts say investors gave up on deal long ago, expect that Nvidia will still be able to push into data-center CPUs with Arm’s help as a partner instead of a subordinate.

“Nvidia plans to launch its CPU, Grace, in 2023 and with the 20-year ARM license can pursue this strategy without owning Arm,” Malik said.

Others echoed that pursuing the deal showed Nvidia’s commitment to play more of a role in the CPU market dominated by Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. with its “Grace” CPU, and that with a 20-year license from Arm, Nvidia didn’t need to own the chip designer to do that.

“We think the most important part of the initial announcement that Nvidia was pursuing Arm was that it signaled Nvidia’s intention to participate more fully in the CPU market, thereby increasing Nvidia’s [total addressable market],” said Raymond James’ Caso, who has a strong buy on Nvidia.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, who has an outperform rating and a $360 price target, said he doubted anyone expected the deal to close at this point.

“As far as Nvidia goes, while owning Arm could have been wonderful, we don’t believe they had to have it either,” Rasgon said. “In our opinion, the impetus for the deal was to help create and drive a broader ecosystem for Arm particularly in the data center.”

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; These companies have managed to continue raising their dividends through several market crashes and bear markets, from Black Monday in 1987 through the COVID-19 pandemic now. The three Dividend Kings I will talk about below are also banks and insurance companies, which tend to be good hedges against inflation.1. Cincinnati Financial CorporationWith nearly $30 billion in assets, Cincinnati Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:CINF) is mainly a property and casualty insurer that does business in 45 U.S. states as well as some business in London. More than $23 billion of Cincinnati Financial's assets are invested in fixed maturity investments and equity securities. Cincinnati's equities portfolio is impacted by changes in market prices and the company's largest equity holding is Apple, so a higher-rate environment may not be so great for some stocks in the portfolio. But the equities portfolio is also concentrated with sectors that hedge inflation better, like financials and energy. Also, as management noted in the company's recent regulatory filing, a 1% instantaneous move in short- and long-term interest rates would grow the fair value of the company's fixed-maturity portfolio by nearly 5%, and enable the company to invest cash flow in securities with higher yields. Cincinnati Financial has now raised its dividend for 61 straight years and has a respectable dividend yield of 2.2%.2. Commerce BancsharesCommerce Bancshares (NASDAQ:CBSH) is a nearly $34.5 billion asset bank based in Kansas City, Missouri. This regional bank runs a good business, generating a return on average common equity of more than 16% through the first nine months of the year and a 1.65% return on average assets in the same time period. Return on equity shows the technical profit the bank generated on shareholders' equity, with a 10% return considered strong for most banks. Return on assets shows how well management used assets to generate profits, with a 1% return considered strong. In its latest quarterly regulatory filing for the third quarter, management estimates that a gradual 1% rise in interest rates over the next year would result in more than a 5% bump in net interest income over the next year, which is what the bank makes on loans and securities after covering its cost of funding. Commerce has increased its dividend for 53 straight years and has a dividend yield of nearly 1.5%, which is probably better than it sounds considering the bank trades at more than 250% its tangible book value (what a bank would be worth if it were liquidated). That's a very strong valuation for a bank stock.3. Farmers & Merchants BancorpWith the smallest market cap of the three at roughly $758 million, Farmers & Merchants Bancorp (OTC:FMCB) has roughly $5.1 billion in assets and is based in Northern and Central California. This is another strong-performing bank with a return on equity of nearly 15.4% through the first nine months of 2021 and a return on assets of nearly 1.4%. This company is not as sensitive to interest rate moves as the other two, but will still benefit a little bit.
