How could a loss-making firm in a cut-throat industry become worth almost $10 billion overnight?</p><p>Short sellers have also sensed blood. According to Fintel.io, a financial data provider, virtually all available DJT shares have been sold short. Borrowing fees currently stand at over 210%, making it the most expensive U.S. company to short sell.</p><p>Both sides, however, could be in for a surprise. Over the past several weeks, trading in DJT’s call options has surged. On Monday alone, over 60,000 out-of-the-money bullish options traded hands. Though Trump Media appears to have no clear path to profitability, shares could still rise to $100 or more on a gamma squeeze.</p><p>Short seller beware… Trump Media’s true believers (and its speculators) could send the stock to the moon.</p><h2 id=\"id_978916240\">DJT Stock: What Is a Gamma Squeeze?</h2><p>Gamma squeezes happen when stock prices suddenly rise quickly, forcing options market makers to buy shares to hedge their positions. This is why AMC Entertainment rose to record highs in 2021 and potentially why Nvidia is doing the same today.</p><p>That’s because options market makers are primarily interested in earning commission fees, not betting on a stock’s direction. So, for every call option they sell, these traders typically buy an equivalent number of shares to hedge their bets. (The exact ratio needed is known as the “delta”). If shares go up, rising stock prices offset the falling value of short calls. And when stocks fall, the premium from selling options offsets the loss.</p><p>Ordinarily, this system works incredibly well. Large firms like Apple will see hundreds of thousands of option contracts traded daily with virtually no impact on the stock’s underlying price.</p><p>However, out-of-the-money (OOM) options can occasionally trigger a self-fulling effect. Rising stock prices increase an OOM option’s “delta,” and the speed of this change (known as “gamma”) peaks as the underlying stock price converges with the option’s strike price. That means rising stock prices force options market makers to buy more stock, which causes higher stock prices, and so on at an accelerating rate. At a certain point, stocks can end up with a “gamma squeeze,” where rising share prices trigger out-of-control buying.</p><h2 id=\"id_3443634969\">An Example from DJT</h2><p>Let’s consider a concrete example. On Monday, Trump Media’s $85 call options traded at $1.40, while a $90 call option traded at $1.10. ($85 calls pay out if share prices rise above $85, and $90 calls do so at $90 or above).</p><p>The price difference between these two contracts is 30 cents. So, any market maker selling a $90 contract will hedge their bets so that every $5 increase in DJT’s stock price (the difference between $90 and $85) comes out to 30 cents, or $30 per 100-share contract.</p><p>In this case, the market maker buys 6 shares of DJT for every 100-share contract, eliminating their risk of rising stock prices. (A $5 increase of 6 shares gives the market maker a $30 profit to offset the loss from the option).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/381b34cb3e4db21af5016bc5e5133add\" tg-width=\"1158\" tg-height=\"857\"/></p><p>DWAC options prices as of March 25. Source: Yahoo Finance</p><p>However, as DJT rises in price, so too does the “delta.” Using the same price data above, the price difference between $50 and $55 options increases to $1.19, or $119 per 100-share contract. In other words, an option close to the money now requires market makers to buy 23.8 shares (119 divided by 5) to offset a $5 gain.</p><p>This can cause a cascading effect. A market maker that initially bought 6 shares to offset a $90 option will find themselves buying even more stock as prices go up. And as “gamma” peaks, so too does the rate that hedgers need to buy.</p><h2 id=\"id_1156989287\">The Trump Effect</h2><p>Deeply OOM bets rarely pay off. Even Trump Media’s Digital World SPAC has only seen two 100% gaining days, and none have happened since 2021. It’s why even companies like AMC Entertainment and GameStop today rarely see deeply out-of-the-money options traded.</p><p>But Trump Media has stirred up animal spirits. Since last week, trading activity of these moonshot bets has surged. DJT currently has over 40,000 OOM call options contracts expiring this Thursday alone, and roughly 14,000 of these contracts are betting that DJT will rise above $90.</p><p>This creates a “coiled spring” effect since so many low-priced options are now in play. For every OOM option written, dozens of shares might still get bought as DJT prices keep going up.</p><h2 id=\"id_2873590341\">What’s Trump Media Worth?</h2><p>In the long run, Trump Media will be worth some multiple of the profits it generates. Mature firms like Facebook parent <strong><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/META\">Meta Platforms</a> </strong>(NASDAQ:<strong>META</strong>) trade at 33 times earnings, while <strong>Pinterest</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong>PINS</strong>) does so at 34x. Most analysts today are projecting no profits for Trump Media, which will peg its long-term value at zero. This is one reason why shares are so expensive to short. (Another is that put sellers must also hedge their bets with short sales).</p><p>The medium term is more interesting. Companies like <strong>Snap</strong> (NYSE:<strong>SNAP</strong>) and <strong><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/RDDT\">Reddit</a></strong> (NYSE:<strong>RDDT</strong>) can lose money for years and <em>still </em>be worth billions. As long as there’s potential for earning profits someday (or getting sold to another company that can make it happen), then these stocks are generally priced at some multiple of their active users. Assuming Truth Social grows its 5-million fanbase to 20 million this year, using a $10-per-user multiple (in line with Reddit and <strong>Discord</strong>) brings its value to $200 million, or $1.50 per share before cash consideration. Growth to a 100-million user base brings its value to $1 billion, and so on.</p><p>Meanwhile, the short term is the most fascinating, especially in the case of Trump Media. That’s because anything can happen on a short enough time horizon. <strong>Dogecoin</strong> (<strong><u>DOGE-USD</u></strong>) became worth as much as $90 billion in 2021 after Elon Musk and other super-fans promoted the cryptocurrency. And <strong>Lucid Motors </strong>(NASDAQ:<strong>LCID</strong>) was worth as much as $125 billion on the promise of beating <strong>Tesla </strong>(NASDAQ:<strong>TSLA</strong>) at its own game. Donald Trump is one social media post away from doing the same with his loyal fan base.</p><p>Trump Media also has the advantage that very few of its 135 million shares are currently tradable. I estimate that only 30 million of original DWAC stock and 8.3 million in converted stock is available on the open market.</p><p>That means even small changes in share prices can have outsized effects on the stock. The 40,000 options expiring this Thursday, for instance, could require close to a half-million shares to fully hedge if prices continue to rise.</p><p>That gives DJT essentially unlimited upside over short enough time periods. Analysts today might call its $60-plus price a “valuation that defies logic.” But where meme stocks are concerned, these logical valuation metrics are for the birds. Though Trump Media appears to have no clear path to profitability, shares could still rise to $100 or more on a gamma squeeze.Short seller beware… Trump Media’s true believers (and its speculators) could send the stock to the moon.DJT Stock: What Is a Gamma Squeeze?Gamma squeezes happen when stock prices suddenly rise quickly, forcing options market makers to buy shares to hedge their positions. This is why AMC Entertainment rose to record highs in 2021 and potentially why Nvidia is doing the same today.That’s because options market makers are primarily interested in earning commission fees, not betting on a stock’s direction. So, for every call option they sell, these traders typically buy an equivalent number of shares to hedge their bets. (The exact ratio needed is known as the “delta”). If shares go up, rising stock prices offset the falling value of short calls. And when stocks fall, the premium from selling options offsets the loss.Ordinarily, this system works incredibly well. Large firms like Apple will see hundreds of thousands of option contracts traded daily with virtually no impact on the stock’s underlying price.However, out-of-the-money (OOM) options can occasionally trigger a self-fulling effect. Rising stock prices increase an OOM option’s “delta,” and the speed of this change (known as “gamma”) peaks as the underlying stock price converges with the option’s strike price. That means rising stock prices force options market makers to buy more stock, which causes higher stock prices, and so on at an accelerating rate. At a certain point, stocks can end up with a “gamma squeeze,” where rising share prices trigger out-of-control buying.An Example from DJTLet’s consider a concrete example. On Monday, Trump Media’s $85 call options traded at $1.40, while a $90 call option traded at $1.10. ($85 calls pay out if share prices rise above $85, and $90 calls do so at $90 or above).The price difference between these two contracts is 30 cents. So, any market maker selling a $90 contract will hedge their bets so that every $5 increase in DJT’s stock price (the difference between $90 and $85) comes out to 30 cents, or $30 per 100-share contract.In this case, the market maker buys 6 shares of DJT for every 100-share contract, eliminating their risk of rising stock prices. (A $5 increase of 6 shares gives the market maker a $30 profit to offset the loss from the option).DWAC options prices as of March 25. Source: Yahoo FinanceHowever, as DJT rises in price, so too does the “delta.” Using the same price data above, the price difference between $50 and $55 options increases to $1.19, or $119 per 100-share contract. In other words, an option close to the money now requires market makers to buy 23.8 shares (119 divided by 5) to offset a $5 gain.This can cause a cascading effect. A market maker that initially bought 6 shares to offset a $90 option will find themselves buying even more stock as prices go up. And as “gamma” peaks, so too does the rate that hedgers need to buy.The Trump EffectDeeply OOM bets rarely pay off. Even Trump Media’s Digital World SPAC has only seen two 100% gaining days, and none have happened since 2021. It’s why even companies like AMC Entertainment and GameStop today rarely see deeply out-of-the-money options traded.But Trump Media has stirred up animal spirits. Since last week, trading activity of these moonshot bets has surged. DJT currently has over 40,000 OOM call options contracts expiring this Thursday alone, and roughly 14,000 of these contracts are betting that DJT will rise above $90.This creates a “coiled spring” effect since so many low-priced options are now in play. For every OOM option written, dozens of shares might still get bought as DJT prices keep going up.What’s Trump Media Worth?In the long run, Trump Media will be worth some multiple of the profits it generates. Mature firms like Facebook parent Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) trade at 33 times earnings, while Pinterest (NASDAQ:PINS) does so at 34x. Most analysts today are projecting no profits for Trump Media, which will peg its long-term value at zero. This is one reason why shares are so expensive to short. (Another is that put sellers must also hedge their bets with short sales).The medium term is more interesting. Companies like Snap (NYSE:SNAP) and Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) can lose money for years and still be worth billions. As long as there’s potential for earning profits someday (or getting sold to another company that can make it happen), then these stocks are generally priced at some multiple of their active users. Assuming Truth Social grows its 5-million fanbase to 20 million this year, using a $10-per-user multiple (in line with Reddit and Discord) brings its value to $200 million, or $1.50 per share before cash consideration. Growth to a 100-million user base brings its value to $1 billion, and so on.Meanwhile, the short term is the most fascinating, especially in the case of Trump Media. That’s because anything can happen on a short enough time horizon. Dogecoin (DOGE-USD) became worth as much as $90 billion in 2021 after Elon Musk and other super-fans promoted the cryptocurrency. And Lucid Motors (NASDAQ:LCID) was worth as much as $125 billion on the promise of beating Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) at its own game. Donald Trump is one social media post away from doing the same with his loyal fan base.Trump Media also has the advantage that very few of its 135 million shares are currently tradable. I estimate that only 30 million of original DWAC stock and 8.3 million in converted stock is available on the open market.That means even small changes in share prices can have outsized effects on the stock. The 40,000 options expiring this Thursday, for instance, could require close to a half-million shares to fully hedge if prices continue to rise.That gives DJT essentially unlimited upside over short enough time periods. Analysts today might call its $60-plus price a “valuation that defies logic.” But where meme stocks are concerned, these logical valuation metrics are for the birds. The strong market for the company’s graphics-processing units was emphasized in Oracle’s earnings report. Oracle recently signed a new cloud-computing infrastructure deal with Nvidia and said it plans to boost capital spending in the next fiscal year, suggesting sustained demand for AI chips.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>Acadia Pharmaceuticals</strong> was falling 16% after the company’s drug pimavanserin for the treatment of negative symptoms of schizophrenia didn’t demonstrate a statistically significant improvement over a placebo. “We will continue to analyze these data with our scientific advisors, but we do not intend to conduct any further clinical trials with pimavanserin,” said Acadia CEO Steve Davis.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Shares of <strong>Archer Daniels Midland</strong> rose 3.6% after the agricultural company said it expects fiscal-year adjusted earnings of $5.25 to $6.25 a share versus analysts’ estimates of $5.41, and its board authorized an additional $2 billion to its share buyback program. The company’s fourth-quarter earnings missed forecasts.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>On Holding</strong> was falling 17% after the Swiss footwear and apparel maker issued a sales forecast for the fiscal year that missed Wall Street estimates. The company said it expects sales of $2.57 billion, below analysts’ expectations of $2.64 billion. On Holding said “negative foreign exchange impacts are expected to be more pronounced” in the first half of the year.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>Vail Resorts</strong> reported fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that missed analysts’ estimates with the ski resort operator citing “unfavorable conditions” and reduced snowfall across its North American resorts. The company also reduced its fiscal-year guidance, saying it now expects earnings of between $270 million and $325 million, down from a prior forecast of $316 million to $394 million. The stock fell 5.6%.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>Asana</strong>, the work management software company, reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss of 4 cents a share, narrower than analysts’ expectations. Asana said it expects an adjusted loss in the first quarter of 8 cents to 9 cents a share, in line with estimates, and revenue of $168 million to $169 million, up 10% to 11% from a year earlier. Muse is feeling as upbeat as ever.</p><p>He boosted his price target on Nvidia&#39;s stock <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NVDA\">$(NVDA)$</a> to $1,200 from $900 over the weekend, writing that the company&#39;s annual GTC conference, which kicks off next week, could shine a light on growth opportunities, including for some of Nvidia&#39;s more under-the-radar businesses.</p><p>Muse&#39;s new target is among the highest listed on FactSet and implies 37% upside from current levels.</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s software business has achieved a $1 billion annual run rate, but that&#39;s still a drop in the bucket for a company that hauled in upwards of $60 billion in overall revenue last fiscal year and that&#39;s expected to easily cross the $100 billion total-revenue mark this fiscal year.</p><p>The software business &#34;is only in the [first] inning,&#34; according to Muse, who expects Nvidia to spend a &#34;tremendous&#34; amount of time at GTC outlining the expansion potential in software. He thinks Nvidia&#39;s management team will be most excited about the opportunity for the company&#39;s AI Enterprise offering, which is meant to make AI more accessible.</p><p>Additionally, Muse expects an emphasis on the potential of inference applications. The investment is intended to lower power consumption and improve performance to meet the ever-rising demands of artificial intelligence applications, the report said.  “The first 50 years of the semiconductor industry has been about the front-end,” SK Hynix executive Lee Kang-Wook told the news outlet in an interview. “But the next 50 years is going to be all about the back-end.” SK Hynix is putting the majority of the $1B into MR-MUF and TSV technologies, Lee said.  The South Korea-based SK Hynix currently holds 54% of the high-bandwidth memory market share, according to Goldman Sachs. Passively managed funds – including ETFs and index funds – held US$13.29 trillion at the end of 2023, versus US$13.23 trillion held in active funds.\nA similar trend occurred in the Australian retail market last year, where $15 billion flowed into ETFs, versus a -$36.9 billion outflow among active funds.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSource: Morningstar, Betashares\nLooking over a longer timeframe, stretching back to 2001 when the first local ETFs became available, the cumulative net flows into Australian unlisted managed funds are now negative – a point emphasised by ETF provider Betashares in its latest 2023 ETF Review.\n“This clear investor preference for ETFs, plus the increasing ‘conversion’ activity we’re seeing of unlisted managed funds into Active ETFs, represents a significant ‘changing of the guard’ in the Australian asset management industry,” said Betashares' Ilan Israelstam recently.\nThe Australian ETF industry ended the year at an all-time high, with a total industry market capitalisation of $177.5 billion as of the end of 2023. The 33% growth, which saw ETFs' fund under management (FUM) grow by $43.7 billion year-on-year, also set a new record.\nLast year was the biggest year for new ETF products, with an additional 56 funds listed, up from 52 in 2022. Many of these were active ETFs – exchange-traded managed funds – as the trend for asset managers to launch listed versions of their managed funds continued.\nETFs' grassroots popularity on display\nThe appeal of ETFs has long been evident among our audience here at Livewire Markets. Some of the ETFs he held at the time of publication were:\n\nVanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (ASX: VAS) \nBetashares Nasdaq 100 ETF (ASX: NDQ) \niShares Core MSCI World Ex Aus ESG Leaders ETF (ASX: IWLD)\nBetashares Global Robotics ad Artificial Intelligence ETF (ASX: RBTZ)\nSpotify Technology (NASDAQ: SPOT)\n\nOne of these, the Betashares Nadaq 100 ETF, featured in our recent wrap of top-performing ETFs of 2023.\nA similar passive-led strategy is pursued by another Meet The Investor interviewee, Pete, who described his successful approach as “Boring, passive, low-cost, diversified.”\nAnd another, a warehouse worker named Dave, said: “To describe the strategy now: it’s essentially a small group of relatively boring and diversified investments, with a focus mostly on the yearly cash flow it spits out.”\nThen there's 25-year-old investor, Jackson, who started dabbling in passive investing while he was still a high school student. His portfolio leans heavily on broad-market index funds.\nAlongside a couple of those mentioned by Stefan, his portfolio also included iShares S&P 500 ETF (ASX: IVV)\n“For balance, I will note that active management can have benefits for portfolio construction and as a way to act on short-term themes, alongside other rationales,” Jackson said.\n“However, over the long term and for the majority of investors in Australia, simply doing the average thing over a long enough timeframe, can have extraordinary benefits.”\nYet another young investor who was featured in Meet The Investor, Stephanie, outlined why thematic ETFs are her preferred investment vehicles.\n“As a young investor, I'm working with a relatively small portfolio, which means that brokerage fees can significantly impact my returns.
