Buy Call or Buy Lottery: Your Choice is?

Singaporeans are the world’s number one when it comes to love for the lottery! In the 2019 World Lottery Yearbook, it was reported that Singapore spends $5.41 billion (about SGD 7.1 billion) annually on lottery tickets. This amounts to $935 per person (about SGD 1,240), far exceeding the $798 per person in Massachusetts, USA, which ranks second globally. Some tigers say that buying lottery tickets is less certain than purchasing call options. Some investors spend a small amount each week buying ODTE options, betting that this company will suddenly experience a surge in stock price.

Would You Set Aside Money Every Month to Bet on a Big Rally?

Data shows that last year, Singapore's gambling revenue reached 12.2 billion SGD, surpassing Las Vegas' 11.2 billion SGD, and only behind Macau, ranking second in the world!According to an earlier survey, 40% of Singapore's residents aged 18 and above said they would bet on at least one type of gambling activity. Human nature is hard to resist; sometimes, blindly trading stocks feels very much like gambling.1. Is betting on meme stocks a gamble? Some investors compare the recent surge in space stocks and quantum computing to the early days of Bitcoin.Ten years ago, Bitcoin was very cheap, but no one paid attention. The stock market always hypes up the most popular and expensive assets. However, the lack of interest was also because these were too new, and investors couldn't confirm their fu

Interesting perspective! Betting on meme stocks or emerging tech feels like walking a fine line between calculated risk and outright gambling. The allure of “the next Bitcoin” is strong, but history shows that only a handful succeed, while many lose money chasing hype. Personally, I prefer balancing my portfolio—reserving a small “high-risk, high-reward” allocation while sticking to steady investments for long-term growth. It’s all about knowing your risk appetite and financial goals. What about you? Do you dabble in such high-stakes opportunities?

Buy Call or Buy Lottery: Your Choice is?

The choice between buying a call option and buying a lottery ticket essentially comes down to assessing risk, probability, and strategy. Summary: Lottery vs. Call Option Buying a Call Option Buying a call option is a financial move where you gain the right, but not the obligation, to purchase an underlying asset (like a stock) at a specific price, known as the strike price, before a certain date (the expiration date). This strategy is popular among traders who anticipate that a stock’s price will rise because call options allow you to profit from price increases without owning the stock outright. Pros: Strategic Investment: Call options allow you to profit if you anticipate a stock price will go up. They are part of a strategic financial plan rather than just pure luck. Defined Risk: You k

I find the lottery culture in Singapore interesting, but at the end of the day, it’s all about luck. The odds of winning are still very low, even though the jackpots can be enormous. Personally, I prefer investing in stocks because it gives me more control and offers the potential for consistent growth over time. With stocks, I can make decisions based on research, trends, and strategy, whereas with the lottery, it’s all purely random chance. While buying call options does carry some risk, it’s still more about understanding the market and timing, which I find more rewarding than relying on sheer luck. Investing in stocks allows me to steadily build wealth, aiming for consistent returns rather than waiting for a once-in-a-lifetime lottery win. For me, the idea of earning steady profits thr

Buying a call option or a lottery ticket boils down to your understanding of probability versus randomness. A lottery ticket offers a tiny chance at life-changing wealth, but it’s pure luck.  A call option, on the other hand, represents an informed bet—you’re leveraging your analysis of market trends, company performance, and macroeconomic factors. The difference? Control and strategy. With a call, you decide on the strike price, expiration, and risk tolerance. You might not hit the jackpot overnight, but it rewards due diligence. Lottery tickets, however, are a dream—no research, no effort, just hope. Personally, I’d rather back my knowledge and data with a call option. Even if the market doesn’t play out as expected, every trade refines your skills for the next one!

Why not buy both? 🤪 which is what I am doing. As they say, no buy no win.  However that being said, I bought more calls than the lottery. As I know that the chance of me winning the lottery is very slim and am ready to part ways with my $1 Toto quick pick.  Buy long dated calls!!!! $NVDA 20251219 120.0 CALL$ $GOOG 20250117 140.0 CALL$ $PLTR 20250117 45.0 CALL$

The Real Singapore Bet: Is the Lottery or Options Trading Your Best Shot at Riches?

When it comes to Singaporeans' enthusiasm for the lottery, few countries can compete. According to the 2019 World Lottery Yearbook, Singaporeans top the world in lottery spending, with a whopping $5.41 billion (about SGD 7.1 billion) shelled out every year on lottery tickets. That’s around $935 per person, outpacing even Massachusetts in the United States, where spending is about $798 per capita. But, what if the lottery wasn’t the only game in town for Singaporeans who enjoy a thrill? Enter: options trading—specifically, call options. A call option, for those who might be new to the concept, gives an investor the right (but not the obligation) to buy a stock at a predetermined price within a specified period. This can be a lucrative way to bet on price movements. While you might think tha

Definitely buy Call! Lottery is one in a million chances to win only and you might not even get that chance to win big in your lifetime. If it doesn't strike, you lose that cash for good. Stock on the other hand, if you analyze well about the potential of the company and did your diligent research to buy a good stock, even if the stock does not increase at that moment of purchase, there will always be another chance for it to skyrocket. Just need to be patient and have the tenacity to hold your investment. At worst, if the stock is not doing well, you can still sell and take back without incurring 100% loss.

It’s what Singaporeans call buying a hope and to use a small sum of money to try to get big returns! I don’t gamble at all so I have never bought any lottery haha! Definitely find it more reliable to buy call in a bull market than to buy lottery ticket. At least there is logic and more certainty than going blind into lottery and throwing money down the drain. @Wayneqq @SR050321 @Success88 @DiAngel @Kaixiang @rL

This is the latest lottery play that caught my attention, it's dropping badly in HangSeng now, however with conference call coming on 15th, I believe there would be news for bullish sentiment. The culture of lottery in Singapore is indeed interesting, but this comes back to ourselves. I prefer buying shares because it gives me control and offers consistent growth. Even though calling has almost as much risk, it's about understanding the market. This is very different from the lottery which only relies on luck.
