Meanwhile, the bond market is on pace for its worst year in history.But you won't find any sulking from Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. The Oracle of Omaha understands that big declines in the broader market are a red-carpet opportunity to buy high-quality businesses at a discount. Buffett and his team have put tens of billions of dollars to work this year buying 19 separate stocks.The $64,000 question is: What stock might be next on Warren Buffett's buy list?Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.With shares of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla roughly 70% below their all-time high set late last year, could it be the next Buffett buy?Before answering that question, let's look at the four factors that could put Tesla on the Oracle of Omaha's radar.Here's what could, in theory, put Tesla on Warren Buffett's radar in 2023First, it's an industry leader -- and I'm not just talking about its market cap, which surpasses all other auto stocks. During the third quarter, Tesla accounted for a 65% share of EVs registered in the United States, according to S&P Global Mobility, a division of S&P Global. Buffett is a strong believer that industry leaders tend to keep winning as long as they have a sustainable moat.Secondly, Tesla can sustain its industry-leading share by significantly boosting production to meet growing demand for EVs. Earlier this year, the Austin, Texas, and Berlin, Germany, gigafactories came online. Although supply chain issues could disrupt production in 2023, it's feasible we could see Tesla surpass 1.5 million EVs produced next year after pacing more than 1 million EV deliveries in 2022.The third beacon for Warren Buffett and his investment team would be the company's income statements. Tesla has been profitable on the basis of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in each of the past three years. Over the trailing five quarters, GAAP net income has ranged from $1.62 billion to $3.32 billion. Even though regulatory credits are aiding Tesla's profits, these emission credits are no longer necessary to achieve profitability.The fourth and final factor that could draw the Oracle of Omaha's attention is Tesla's balance sheet, which ended September with $21.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. CEO Elon Musk has suggested that Tesla's board of directors would consider a share buyback once the U.S. and global economic outlook stabilizes a bit.Is Tesla a Warren Buffett stock?But are these four factors enough to coerce the Oracle of Omaha to put Berkshire Hathaway's money to work in Tesla? In my view, not a chance -- and there are two key reasons why.1. Tesla lacks a true moatTo begin with, Tesla's competitive advantages aren't as rock-solid as its market share entails. The company's U.S. and global market share have been shrinking as global automakers aggressively spend on EV, autonomous vehicle (AV) research, and battery production.In the U.S., General Motors-- a current Berkshire Hathaway holding -- and Ford Motor Company have earmarked $35 billion and $50 billion, respectively, for EV, AV, and battery research. By the end of 2025, GM and Ford are each expected to have unveiled 30 new EV models worldwide.To add to this point, even though Tesla is the most popular EV sold in North America, it lacks the brand history and awareness that stalwarts like General Motors and Ford bring to the table. Building vehicles for American workers for more than a century is an intangible advantage that market cap simply doesn't trounce.Furthermore, Tesla's competitive edges are already being toppled by newer entrants in the EV space. For instance, China-based Nio brought two sedans (the ET7 and ET5) to market this year that offer 621 miles of range with the top-tier battery pack upgrade. That literally and metaphorically runs circles around the range offered by Tesla's flagship Model 3 sedan.Without a clear-cut moat, Tesla wouldn't make the grade with Warren Buffett and his investment team.Production of the Tesla Cybertruck has been delayed. Elon Musk doesn't evoke trust from shareholdersThe other reason I believe there's absolutely no chance the Oracle of Omaha or his investing lieutenants (Todd Combs and Ted Weschler) would purchase shares of Tesla in 2023 is CEO Elon Musk.For Buffett, strong management teams are a luxury, not a necessity, as long as the business he's investing in is sound. However, if that management team threatens consumer and shareholder trust or could adversely impact its operating performance, it's a big red flag.Over the past few years, it's become readily apparent that Musk is a legal, financial, and operating liability for Tesla. Yes, he's an innovator who has helped build Tesla from an upstart into the world's most valuable auto company. But he's also drawn the ire of U.S. regulators on more than one occasion, and has made a habit of overpromising and underdelivering when it comes to new innovations and products.As an example, Musk has been proclaiming that level 5 full self-driving vehicles are a year away for the past eight years (and counting). He also expected 1 million robotaxis to be on the road a couple of years ago (the current robotaxi count is zero). There's also the Tesla Semi and Cybertruck, which were delayed for years.The point is, Musk is too much of a wild card to be trusted in a leadership role. For that reason, Warren Buffett and his investment probably wouldn't touch Tesla Whether it's a 4-year-old visiting Disneyland for the first time or a grandparent watching a Disney movie with their grandchild, the company's products, services, and characters are designed to connect people of all ages through the use of imagination.This leads to another key point: Walt Disney has superior pricing power. First, the company has been losing central processing unit (CPU) market share in personal computers (PCs), mobile, and data center servers to key rival Advanced Micro Devices. Secondly, Intel is a cyclical company. A weaker U.S. growth outlook, coupled with supply chain issues and historically high inflation, is generally bad news for its revenue and profit outlook.While there's no doubt Intel is facing some very tangible near-term headwinds, the company has positioned its puzzle pieces for long-term success.For example, Intel broke ground on two chip manufacturing plants in Ohio earlier this year. This $20 billion project, set to begin production in 2024, is designed to expand Intel's Foundry Services segment. Best of all, with President Joe Biden signing the CHIPS and Science Act into law in August, nearly $53 billion in subsidies are now available to aid with the construction of domestic chip manufacturing sites.Pessimists have also, arguably, made a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to Intel's lost CPU market share. While no lost market share should be taken for granted, Intel is still very much in the driver's seat in PCs, mobile, and data center servers.  The cash flow being generated from these arenas is what's helping to fuel the company'ssuperior dividend (5% yield), as well as its investments in higher-growth initiatives.One of the more exciting opportunities for Intel is the growth of autonomous vehicle company Mobileye Global. CRM software is used by consumer-facing businesses to improve existing client engagement and boost sales.Like the other Dow components on this list, Salesforce stock has been bludgeoned in 2022. Shares are down 40%, which is considerably worse than the noted (5.5%) year-to-date return for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This weakness can primarily be blamed on the U.S. economy and hawkish monetary policy. The growing likelihood of a recession, coupled with the removal of cheap capital as interest rates rise, probably means Salesforce will see a slowdown in demand for its CRM software.Of course, Salesforce wouldn't be on this list if it didn't possess clearly identifiable competitive advantages that can sustain double-digit growth and make its patient shareholders richer over time.The first thing to note about Salesforce is just how dominant it's become in the CRM space. Not only has the company been the No. 1 ranked global CRM software provider for the past nine years, according to IDC, but it's been steadily expanding its industry-leading market share for pretty much the entire time. It ended 2021 having accounted for 23.8% of global CRM spending. That's more than its four closest competitors on a combined basis.To build on this point, CRM software is a sustained double-digit growth opportunity. Though service-oriented companies are the most logical customer, we're seeing increasing usage of CRM software from the industrial, financial, and healthcare sectors. Translation: Salesforce has a hearty organic growth opportunity on its plate.On top of steady organic growth, co-founder and co-CEO Marc Benioff has helped orchestrate a number of key acquisitions. Some of the best-known deals include Tableau Software, MuleSoft, and Slack Technologies. Despite the tournament’s controversial location, the soccer (or as it is known by the rest of the world, football) extravaganza is expected to draw an audience of billions who will tune in to watch icons such as Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe attempt to get their hands on the Jules Rimet trophy and write their names and their countries’ fellow representatives into history.Just for context, the previous 2018 World Cup saw an audience of over 3.6 billion people watch matches, with the final drawing 1.12 billion viewers – that’s more than 5x above the viewing figures for the 2022 Super Bowl.Such a global happening is bound to have commercial implications and could be advantageous to certain categories. To which ones exactly? Streaming platforms, online betting, soccer video games, digital advertising and sporting goods/apparel, all come readily to mind as segments which could benefit.With this in mind, we delved into the TipRanks database and pulled up two names which could get a boost from this global sporting festival. Let’s kick off.Electronic Arts (EA)Attempting to emulate the skills of global sports gods is a favorite pastime for gamers and the first stock will look at is an expert at providing such thrills. Electronic Arts is one of the video gaming space’s titans and a home computer gaming trailblazer.Specifically relating to the World Cup, its EA Sports titles include the FIFA soccer game in addition to titles such as NBA Live, Madden NFL, and NHL. The portfolio, however, extends beyond just sports titles, and includes some of gaming’s most well-known brands like Apex Legends, Battlefield, Need for Speed, and Plants vs. Zombies, amongst others.After benefiting immensely from the work-from-home trend during the pandemic, the reopening and then the economic downturn have been headwinds for the gaming industry as sales have cooled down in 2022.As such, EA’s latest quarterly report, for the second fiscal quarter (September quarter) was a mixed affair. Net bookings fell by 5.4% year-over-year to $1.75 billion, missing the Street’s forecast by $30 million, while the company also lowered its FY 2023 net bookings outlook from the range between $7.90 billion to $8.10 billion to the range between $7.65 billion and $7.85 billion. The Street’s forecast stood at $7.97 billion.However, the company beat expectations on the bottom-line with EPS of $1.07 coming in ahead of the $1.00 consensus estimate. Moreover, the company raised its FY 2023 EPS forecast to around $3.11-$3.34 from the prior guidance of $2.79-$2.87.Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter makes note of the strong performance in the current quarter from the game which stands to benefit the most from the World Cup.“FIFA is off to a record start so far this quarter, and the company announced several initiatives to drive Ultimate Team engagement as the tournament progresses over the remainder of the quarter,” the analyst said. “We’re confident in EA’s ability to grow the franchise in a World Cup year, and especially confident in its ability to grow this quarter, which is historically strong on its own… We continue to believe that the video game industry is undervalued, having historically traded at a significant premium to the market multiple.”To this end, Pachter rates EA shares an Outperform (i.e. Buy) while his $164 price target makes room for 12-month gains of 25%.Looking at the consensus breakdown, based on 9 Buy ratings vs. 4 Holds, EA receives a Moderate Buy consensus rating.fuboTV (FUBO)Let’s now look at a stock that stands to benefit in a different way from the World Cup. FuboTV is a streaming platform, and one that is mainly focused on sports.In fact, upon its launch in 2015, the streaming service was focused solely on soccer, but in 2017 changed tack to become an all-sports service and later, targeting the cord-cutting trend morphed into a virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD) model offering also non-sports programs. That said, sports remain the main focal point and depending on region (the service is available in the U.S., Canada and Spain), subscribers can watch EPL, NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS, CPL games as well as international football.Those subscribers have been growing with each quarter as was the case again in Q3. North American subscribers rose by 31% year-over-year to a record 1,231,000, while international subs reached 358,000. All this helped the company generate revenue of $225 million, above the $213 million expected on Wall Street.Ongoing growth aside, the problem for FUBO has been one of profitability – or lack thereof – a situation the company hopes to fix by 2025. While the continued losses, along with other issues such as rising competition and the effects of inflation are worries for Wedbush’s Michael Pachter, the analyst believes the fact FUBO raised its revenue and subscriber outlook when it released the Q3 metrics is indicative of how the company can make headway on account of the games.“We think management’s confidence around Q4 results in due in part to increased political advertising, as well as the anticipated uptick in subscribers driven by the upcoming World Cup, which fuboTV will uniquely be broadcasting in 4K,” Pachter explained. “Given the upside and downside risk, we think the current share price affords a compelling entry point.”To this end, Pachter has an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating for FUBO shares, backed by a $5 price target. That much is true.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately pretty much everything else about inflation—a red hot topic these days—is conjecture. And that’s vexing, not just for the dismal scientists (aka economists), but for all of us, because whether or not prices are really rising, by how much and for how long, has massive implications in our lives. Or as Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, says: “Inflation is one of the mysteries of economic study and thought. A difficult thing to gauge and forecast and get right. That’s why the risks are high.”</p>\n<p>The current debate over inflation really revolves around two questions: First, is this current spate of inflation, just that, a spate—or to use Wall Street’s buzzword of the moment, “transitory,”—or not? (Just to give you an idea of how buzzy, when I Google the word “transitory” the search engine suggests “inflation” after it.) And second, transitory (aka temporary) inflation or not, what does it suggest for the economy and markets?</p>\n<p>Before I get into that, let me lay out what’s going on with prices right now. First, know that inflation,which peaked in 1980 at an annualized rate of 13.55%,has been tame for quite some time, specifically 4% or less for nearly 30 years. Which means that anyone 40 years old or younger has no experience with inflation other than maybe from an Econ 101 textbook. Obviously that could be a problem.</p>\n<p>As an aside I remember President Ford in 1974 trying to jawbone inflation down with his \"Whip Inflation Now\" campaign, which featured“Win” buttons,earringsand evenugly sweaters.None of this worked and it took draconian measures by Fed Chair Paul Volcker (raising rates and targeting money supply,as described by Former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, William Poole)to eventually tame inflation and keep it under wraps for all those years.</p>\n<p>Until now perhaps. Last week theLabor Department reported that consumer prices (the CPI, or consumer price index) rose 5% in May,the fastest annual rate in nearly 13 years—which was when the economy was overheating from the housing boom which subsequently went bust and sent the economy off a cliff and into the Great Recession. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 3.8%, the biggest increase since May 1992. (For the record, the likelihood of the economy tanking right now is de minimis.)</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/87f75dfcb98fb5a0e7c3f9d3f8d336e2\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"412\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Used car and truck prices are a major driver of inflation, climbing 7.3% last month and 29.7% over the past year. New car prices are up too, which have pushed upshares of Ford and GM a remarkable 40% plus this year.Clearly Americans want to buy vehicles to go on vacation and get back to work. And Yahoo Finance’sJanna Herron reportsthat rents are rising at their fastest pace in 15 years.</p>\n<p>To be sure, not all prices are climbing.As Yahoo Finance’s Rick Newman points out,prices are not up much at all for health care, education and are basically flat for technology, including computers, smartphones and internet service (an important point which we’ll get back to.)</p>\n<p>But that’s the counterpoint really. Americans are obsessed with cars, housing is critical and many of us are experiencing sticker shock booking travel this summer. Higher prices are front and center. Wall Street too is in a tizzy about inflation, and concerns about it and more importantly Federal Reserve policy in response to inflation (see below), sent stocks lower with the S&amp;P 500 down 1.91% this week, its worst week since February.</p>\n<p>Given this backdrop, the tension (such as it is) was high when the Fed met this week to deliver its forecast and for Chair Jay Powell to answer questions from the media. Or at least so said hedge fund honcho Paul Tudor Jones,who characterized the proceedings on CNBCas “the most important meeting in [Chairman] Jay Powell’s career, certainly the most important Fed meeting of the past four or five years.” Jones was critical of the Fed, which he believes is now stimulating the economy unnecessarily by keeping interest rates low and by buying financial assets. Unnecessarily, Jones says, because the economy is already running hot and needs no support. The Fed (which is in the transitory camp when it comes to inflation) risks overheating the economy by creating runaway inflation, according to PTJ.</p>\n<p>Now I don’t see eye to eye with Jones on this, though I should point out, he's a billionaire from investing in financial markets, and let’s just say I’m not. I should also point out that Jones, 66, is in fact old enough to remember inflation, never mind that as a young man he called the 1987 stock market crash. So we should all ignore Jones at our peril.</p>\n<p>As for what the Fed put forth this past Wednesday, well it wasn’t much, signaling an expectation ofraising interest rates twice by the end of 2023(yes, that is down the road.) And Powell, who’s become much more adept at not rippling the waters these days after some rougher forays earlier in his tenure, didn’t drop any bombshells in the presser.</p>\n<p>Which brings us to the question of why the Federal Reserve isn’t so concerned about inflation and thinks it is mostly—here’s that word again—transitory. To answer that, we need to first address why prices are rising right now, which can be summed up in one very familiar abbreviation: COVID-19. When COVID hit last spring the economy collapsed, which crushed demand in sectors like leisure, travel and retail. Now the economy is roaring back to life and businesses can raise prices, certainly over 2020 levels.</p>\n<p>“We clearly should’ve expected it,” says William Spriggs, chief economist at the AFL-CIO and a professor of economics at Howard University. “You can’t shut down the economy and think you turn on the switch [without some inflation].”</p>\n<p>“We had a pandemic that forced an artificial shutdown of the economy in a way that even the collapse of the financial system and the housing market didn’t, and we had a snapback at a rate we’ve never seen before—not because of the fundamentals driving recovery but because of government,” says Joel Naroff, president and chief economist of Naroff Economics.</p>\n<p>COVID had other secondary effects on the economy though, besides just ultimately producing a snapback. For one thing, the pandemic throttled supply chains, specifically the shipping of parts and components from one part of the globe to another. It also confused managers about how much to produce and therefore how many parts to order.</p>\n<p>A prime example here is what happened to the chip (semiconductor) and auto industrieswhich I wrote about last month.Car makers thought no one would buy vehicles during the pandemic and pared back their orders with chipmakers, (which were having a tough time shipping their chips anyway.) Turned out the car guys were wrong, millions of people wanted cars and trucks, but the automakers didn’t have enough chips for their cars and had to curb production. Fewer vehicles and strong demand led to higher new car prices, which cascaded to used car prices then to car rental rates. Net net, all the friction and slowness of getting things delivered now adds to costs which causes companies to raise prices.</p>\n<p>Another secondary effect of COVID which has been inflationary comes from employment,which I got into a bit last week.We all know millions were thrown out of work by COVID last year, many of whom were backstopped by government payments that could add up to $600 a week (state and federal.) These folks have been none too keen on coming back to work for minimum wage, or $290 a week. So to lure them back employers are having to pay more, which puts more money in people's pockets which allows stores for example to raise prices.</p>\n<p><b>Anti-inflation forces</b></p>\n<p>But here’s the big-time question: If COVID was temporary, and therefore its effects are temporary and inflation is one of its effects then doesn’t it follow, ipso facto, that inflation is (OK I’ll say it again), transitory?</p>\n<p>I say yes, (with a bit of a caveat.) And most economists, like Claudia Sahm, a senior fellow at the Jain Family Institute and a former Federal Reserve economist, agree. “‘Transitory’ has become a buzzword,” she says. “It is important to be more concrete about what we mean by that. We’re probably going to see in the next few months inflation numbers that are bigger than average, but as long as they keep stepping down, that’s the sign of it being transitory. If we didn’t see any sign of inflation stepping down some, it would’ve started feeling like ‘Houston, we have a problem.’”</p>\n<p>To buttress my argument beyond that above \"if-then\" syllogism, let’s take a look at why inflation has been so low for the past three decades.</p>\n<p>To me this is mostly obvious. Prices have been tamped down by the greatest anti-inflation force of our lifetime, that being technology, specifically the explosion of consumer technology. Think about it. The first wave of technology, a good example would be IBM mainframes, saved big companies money in back-office functions, savings which they mostly kept for themselves (higher profits) and their shareholders. But the four great landmark events in the advent of consumer technology; the introduction ofthe PC in 1974 (MITS Altair),the Netscape IPO of 1995,Google search in 1998,and the launch of theiPhone in 2007(I remember Steve Jobs demoing it to me like it was yesterday), greatly accelerated, broadened and deepened this deflationary trend.</p>\n<p>Not only has technology been pushing down the cost of everything from drilling for oil, to manufacturing clothes to farming, and allowing for the creation of groundbreaking (and deflationary) competitors like Uber, Airbnb and Netflix, but it also let consumers find—on their phones—the most affordable trip to Hawaii, the least expensive haircut or the best deal on Nikes.</p>\n<p>So technology has reduced the cost of almost everything and will continue to do so the rest of our lifetime. Bottom line: Unless something terrible happens, the power of technology will outweigh and outlive COVID.</p>\n<p>There is one mitigating factor and that is globalism, which is connected to both technology and COVID. Let me briefly explain.</p>\n<p>After World War II, most of humanity has become more and more connected in terms of trade, communication, travel, etc. (See supply chain above.) Technology of course was a major enabler here; better ships, planes and faster internet, all of which as it grew more potent, accelerated globalism. Another element was the introduction of political constructs like the World Trade Organization and NAFTA. (I think of the Clinton administration andChina joining the WTO in 2001as perhaps the high-water marks of globalization.)</p>\n<p>Like its technological cousin, globalism has deflationary effects particularly on the labor front as companies could more and more easily find lowest cost countries to produce goods and source materials. And like technology, globalization seemed inexorable, which it was, until it wasn’t. Political winds, manifested by the likes of Brexit and leaders like Putin, Xi Jinping, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Duterte and of course Donald Trump have caused globalism to wane and anti-globalism and nationalism to wax.</p>\n<p>The internet too, once seen as only a great connector, has also become a global divider, as the world increasingly fractures into Chinese, U.S. and European walled digital zones when it comes to social media and search for example. Security risks, privacy, spying and hacking of course divide us further here too.</p>\n<p>So technology, which had made globalism stronger and stronger, now also makes it weaker and weaker.</p>\n<p>COVID plays a role in rethinking globalism as it exposes vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Companies that were rethinking their manufacturing in China but considering another country, are now wondering if it just makes sense to repatriate the whole shebang. Supply chains that were optimized for cost only are being rethought with security and reliability being factored in and that costs money.</p>\n<p>How significant is this decline in globalization and how permanent is it? Good questions. But my point here is whether or not \"globalism disrupted\" is transitory (!) or not, it could push prices up, (in the short and intermediate run at least), as cost is sacrificed for predictability. Longer term I say Americans are a resourceful people. We’ll figure out how to make cost effective stuff in the U.S. It’s also likely that globalism will trend upward again, though perhaps not as unfettered as it once was.</p>\n<p>More downward pressure on pricing could come from shifts in employment practices. Mark Zandi points out that “the work-from-anywhere dynamic could depress wage growth and prices. If I don’t need to work in New York anymore and could live in Tampa, it stands to reason my wage could get cut or I won’t get the same wage increase in the future.”</p>\n<p>And so what is Zandi’s take on transitory? “What we’re observing now is prices going back to pre-pandemic,” he says. “The price spikes we’re experiencing now will continue for the next few months through summer but certainly by the end of year, this time next year, they will have disappeared. I do think underlying inflation will be higher post-pandemic than pre-pandemic, but that’s a feature not a bug.”</p>\n<p>I don’t disagree. To me it’s simple: The technology wave I’ve described above is bigger than COVID and bigger than the rise and fall of globalism. And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, I believe inflation will be transitory, certainly in the long run. That much is true.\nUnfortunately pretty much everything else about inflation—a red hot topic these days—is conjecture. And that’s vexing, not just for the dismal scientists (aka economists), but for all of us, because whether or not prices are really rising, by how much and for how long, has massive implications in our lives. Or as Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, says: “Inflation is one of the mysteries of economic study and thought. A difficult thing to gauge and forecast and get right. That’s why the risks are high.”\nThe current debate over inflation really revolves around two questions: First, is this current spate of inflation, just that, a spate—or to use Wall Street’s buzzword of the moment, “transitory,”—or not? (Just to give you an idea of how buzzy, when I Google the word “transitory” the search engine suggests “inflation” after it.) And second, transitory (aka temporary) inflation or not, what does it suggest for the economy and markets?\nBefore I get into that, let me lay out what’s going on with prices right now. First, know that inflation,which peaked in 1980 at an annualized rate of 13.55%,has been tame for quite some time, specifically 4% or less for nearly 30 years. Which means that anyone 40 years old or younger has no experience with inflation other than maybe from an Econ 101 textbook. Obviously that could be a problem.\nAs an aside I remember President Ford in 1974 trying to jawbone inflation down with his \"Whip Inflation Now\" campaign, which featured“Win” buttons,earringsand evenugly sweaters.None of this worked and it took draconian measures by Fed Chair Paul Volcker (raising rates and targeting money supply,as described by Former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, William Poole)to eventually tame inflation and keep it under wraps for all those years.\nUntil now perhaps. Last week theLabor Department reported that consumer prices (the CPI, or consumer price index) rose 5% in May,the fastest annual rate in nearly 13 years—which was when the economy was overheating from the housing boom which subsequently went bust and sent the economy off a cliff and into the Great Recession. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 3.8%, the biggest increase since May 1992. (For the record, the likelihood of the economy tanking right now is de minimis.)\n\nUsed car and truck prices are a major driver of inflation, climbing 7.3% last month and 29.7% over the past year. New car prices are up too, which have pushed upshares of Ford and GM a remarkable 40% plus this year.Clearly Americans want to buy vehicles to go on vacation and get back to work. And Yahoo Finance’sJanna Herron reportsthat rents are rising at their fastest pace in 15 years.\nTo be sure, not all prices are climbing.As Yahoo Finance’s Rick Newman points out,prices are not up much at all for health care, education and are basically flat for technology, including computers, smartphones and internet service (an important point which we’ll get back to.)\nBut that’s the counterpoint really. Americans are obsessed with cars, housing is critical and many of us are experiencing sticker shock booking travel this summer. Higher prices are front and center. Wall Street too is in a tizzy about inflation, and concerns about it and more importantly Federal Reserve policy in response to inflation (see below), sent stocks lower with the S&P 500 down 1.91% this week, its worst week since February.\nGiven this backdrop, the tension (such as it is) was high when the Fed met this week to deliver its forecast and for Chair Jay Powell to answer questions from the media. Or at least so said hedge fund honcho Paul Tudor Jones,who characterized the proceedings on CNBCas “the most important meeting in [Chairman] Jay Powell’s career, certainly the most important Fed meeting of the past four or five years.” Jones was critical of the Fed, which he believes is now stimulating the economy unnecessarily by keeping interest rates low and by buying financial assets. Unnecessarily, Jones says, because the economy is already running hot and needs no support. The Fed (which is in the transitory camp when it comes to inflation) risks overheating the economy by creating runaway inflation, according to PTJ.\nNow I don’t see eye to eye with Jones on this, though I should point out, he's a billionaire from investing in financial markets, and let’s just say I’m not. I should also point out that Jones, 66, is in fact old enough to remember inflation, never mind that as a young man he called the 1987 stock market crash. So we should all ignore Jones at our peril.\nAs for what the Fed put forth this past Wednesday, well it wasn’t much, signaling an expectation ofraising interest rates twice by the end of 2023(yes, that is down the road.) And Powell, who’s become much more adept at not rippling the waters these days after some rougher forays earlier in his tenure, didn’t drop any bombshells in the presser.\nWhich brings us to the question of why the Federal Reserve isn’t so concerned about inflation and thinks it is mostly—here’s that word again—transitory. To answer that, we need to first address why prices are rising right now, which can be summed up in one very familiar abbreviation: COVID-19. When COVID hit last spring the economy collapsed, which crushed demand in sectors like leisure, travel and retail. Now the economy is roaring back to life and businesses can raise prices, certainly over 2020 levels.\n“We clearly should’ve expected it,” says William Spriggs, chief economist at the AFL-CIO and a professor of economics at Howard University. “You can’t shut down the economy and think you turn on the switch [without some inflation].”\n“We had a pandemic that forced an artificial shutdown of the economy in a way that even the collapse of the financial system and the housing market didn’t, and we had a snapback at a rate we’ve never seen before—not because of the fundamentals driving recovery but because of government,” says Joel Naroff, president and chief economist of Naroff Economics.\nCOVID had other secondary effects on the economy though, besides just ultimately producing a snapback. For one thing, the pandemic throttled supply chains, specifically the shipping of parts and components from one part of the globe to another. It also confused managers about how much to produce and therefore how many parts to order.\nA prime example here is what happened to the chip (semiconductor) and auto industrieswhich I wrote about last month.Car makers thought no one would buy vehicles during the pandemic and pared back their orders with chipmakers, (which were having a tough time shipping their chips anyway.) Turned out the car guys were wrong, millions of people wanted cars and trucks, but the automakers didn’t have enough chips for their cars and had to curb production. Fewer vehicles and strong demand led to higher new car prices, which cascaded to used car prices then to car rental rates. Net net, all the friction and slowness of getting things delivered now adds to costs which causes companies to raise prices.\nAnother secondary effect of COVID which has been inflationary comes from employment,which I got into a bit last week.We all know millions were thrown out of work by COVID last year, many of whom were backstopped by government payments that could add up to $600 a week (state and federal.) These folks have been none too keen on coming back to work for minimum wage, or $290 a week. So to lure them back employers are having to pay more, which puts more money in people's pockets which allows stores for example to raise prices.\nAnti-inflation forces\nBut here’s the big-time question: If COVID was temporary, and therefore its effects are temporary and inflation is one of its effects then doesn’t it follow, ipso facto, that inflation is (OK I’ll say it again), transitory?\nI say yes, (with a bit of a caveat.) And most economists, like Claudia Sahm, a senior fellow at the Jain Family Institute and a former Federal Reserve economist, agree. “‘Transitory’ has become a buzzword,” she says. “It is important to be more concrete about what we mean by that. We’re probably going to see in the next few months inflation numbers that are bigger than average, but as long as they keep stepping down, that’s the sign of it being transitory. If we didn’t see any sign of inflation stepping down some, it would’ve started feeling like ‘Houston, we have a problem.’”\nTo buttress my argument beyond that above \"if-then\" syllogism, let’s take a look at why inflation has been so low for the past three decades.\nTo me this is mostly obvious. Prices have been tamped down by the greatest anti-inflation force of our lifetime, that being technology, specifically the explosion of consumer technology. Think about it. The first wave of technology, a good example would be IBM mainframes, saved big companies money in back-office functions, savings which they mostly kept for themselves (higher profits) and their shareholders. But the four great landmark events in the advent of consumer technology; the introduction ofthe PC in 1974 (MITS Altair),the Netscape IPO of 1995,Google search in 1998,and the launch of theiPhone in 2007(I remember Steve Jobs demoing it to me like it was yesterday), greatly accelerated, broadened and deepened this deflationary trend.\nNot only has technology been pushing down the cost of everything from drilling for oil, to manufacturing clothes to farming, and allowing for the creation of groundbreaking (and deflationary) competitors like Uber, Airbnb and Netflix, but it also let consumers find—on their phones—the most affordable trip to Hawaii, the least expensive haircut or the best deal on Nikes.\nSo technology has reduced the cost of almost everything and will continue to do so the rest of our lifetime. Bottom line: Unless something terrible happens, the power of technology will outweigh and outlive COVID.\nThere is one mitigating factor and that is globalism, which is connected to both technology and COVID. Let me briefly explain.\nAfter World War II, most of humanity has become more and more connected in terms of trade, communication, travel, etc. (See supply chain above.) Technology of course was a major enabler here; better ships, planes and faster internet, all of which as it grew more potent, accelerated globalism. Another element was the introduction of political constructs like the World Trade Organization and NAFTA. (I think of the Clinton administration andChina joining the WTO in 2001as perhaps the high-water marks of globalization.)\nLike its technological cousin, globalism has deflationary effects particularly on the labor front as companies could more and more easily find lowest cost countries to produce goods and source materials. And like technology, globalization seemed inexorable, which it was, until it wasn’t. Political winds, manifested by the likes of Brexit and leaders like Putin, Xi Jinping, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Duterte and of course Donald Trump have caused globalism to wane and anti-globalism and nationalism to wax.\nThe internet too, once seen as only a great connector, has also become a global divider, as the world increasingly fractures into Chinese, U.S. and European walled digital zones when it comes to social media and search for example. Security risks, privacy, spying and hacking of course divide us further here too.\nSo technology, which had made globalism stronger and stronger, now also makes it weaker and weaker.\nCOVID plays a role in rethinking globalism as it exposes vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Companies that were rethinking their manufacturing in China but considering another country, are now wondering if it just makes sense to repatriate the whole shebang. Supply chains that were optimized for cost only are being rethought with security and reliability being factored in and that costs money.\nHow significant is this decline in globalization and how permanent is it? Good questions. But my point here is whether or not \"globalism disrupted\" is transitory (!) or not, it could push prices up, (in the short and intermediate run at least), as cost is sacrificed for predictability. Longer term I say Americans are a resourceful people. We’ll figure out how to make cost effective stuff in the U.S. It’s also likely that globalism will trend upward again, though perhaps not as unfettered as it once was.\nMore downward pressure on pricing could come from shifts in employment practices. Mark Zandi points out that “the work-from-anywhere dynamic could depress wage growth and prices. If I don’t need to work in New York anymore and could live in Tampa, it stands to reason my wage could get cut or I won’t get the same wage increase in the future.”\nAnd so what is Zandi’s take on transitory? “What we’re observing now is prices going back to pre-pandemic,” he says. “The price spikes we’re experiencing now will continue for the next few months through summer but certainly by the end of year, this time next year, they will have disappeared. I do think underlying inflation will be higher post-pandemic than pre-pandemic, but that’s a feature not a bug.”\nI don’t disagree. To me it’s simple: The technology wave I’ve described above is bigger than COVID and bigger than the rise and fall of globalism. And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, I believe inflation will be transitory, certainly in the long run. Even if inflation turns out to be more persistent than some forecasters expect, the Federal Reserve will step in and nip the problem in the bud.</p>\n<p>The last defense against higher inflation, not surprisingly, is the central bank. That leaves the critical question: How much confidence should be assigned to presuming that the Fed will adjust monetary policy in a timely fashion if faster inflation is stickier than expected?</p>\n<p>Skeptics say that the Fed’s track record on economic forecasting is hardly encouraging. To be fair, it’s not obvious that private economists are any better. Forecasting is hard for everyone, especially about the future.</p>\n<p>Regardless, the government’s extraordinary pandemic stimulus threatens to permanently raise inflation, some analysts warn. If so, does the Fed have the tools to cap if not reverse higher inflation? Yes, but that leads to another question: Will the Fed use those tools in a timely manner?</p>\n<p>Here’s where the outlook become hazy, in part because expectations on this front depend on whether you think the central bank has become overly politicized. One line of worry runs as follows: debt levels (for government and the private sector) have increased sharply in recent years and so higher rates will create burdens that the economy can’t tolerate.</p>\n<p>There’s some truth in that concern, although the pushback is that if the Fed tightens policy sufficiently early, any upside inflation surprise will be curtailed and so interest rate hikes will be modest.</p>\n<p>There’s also the potential for deploying hawkish Fed rhetoric as a tool to convince the markets that the central bank will remain vigilant on keeping inflation contained. There was a hint of this last week, when St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said that rate hikes may begin sooner than expected – comments that triggered a decline in commodities prices and Treasury yields.</p>\n<p>There’s still a lot of uncertainty about inflation’s trajectory, but there are nascent signs that the recent surge is peaking. For example, a multi-factor measure of the directional bias for US inflation – based on The Capital Spectator’s Inflation Trend Index — continues to suggest that June will mark the high point for the recent swelling of pricing pressure.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/22d844f6d03c5b3d1829fbd7b33b5e8e\" tg-width=\"650\" tg-height=\"450\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Inflation Trend Index</p>\n<p>In addition, the Cleveland Fed’s inflation forecasting model projects that after this year’s pop in prices, the trend will ease in the years ahead. For example, over the next five years this model sees inflation at around 1.5%. Every model is wrong, but some are useful. On that point, Mark Hulbert at MarketWatch.com reports that the Cleveland Fed’s model has a relatively strong record vs. the University of Michigan’s consumer survey of inflation expectations and the Treasury market’s implied inflation outlook.</p>\n<p>Keep in mind, too, that political pressure will probably rise for the Fed to act if inflation appears to remain higher than expected. It’s likely that if and when the Fed appears to be losing control of inflation, Fed Chairman Powell will be mercilessly pressed to explain why at the periodic public hearings in Congress.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fed policymakers are starting to talk about tapering bond purchases, a shift that — when it comes — would likely be an early sign of monetary tightening. Although tapering isn’t expected in the immediate future, the fact that the subject is receiving public attention from the central bank lays down markers that the potential for change is brewing.</p>\n<p>“It would be healthier as we are making progress in weathering the pandemic and achieving our goals to start adjusting these purchases — Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities — sooner rather than later,” Robert Kaplan, Dallas Fed chair, noted on Monday.</p>\n<p>As for the bank’s standard toolkit, Fed funds futures markets aren’t pricing in rate hikes for the rest of this year, but the estimated probabilities start to rise meaningfully in 2022, rising gradually to 40% a year from now, based on CME data.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, there’s plenty of speculation swirling that the Fed will intentionally remain asleep at the switch if inflation proves to be less than transitory. But for now, this is guesswork and there’s minimal, if any, reasoning to suggest that its captures a likely scenario for the months and years ahead.</p>\n<p>The bigger risk is that the Fed remains attentive and acts responsibly but gets the timing wrong and allows the inflation genie to escape. To be fair, it’s not obvious that private economists are any better. Forecasting is hard for everyone, especially about the future.\nRegardless, the government’s extraordinary pandemic stimulus threatens to permanently raise inflation, some analysts warn. If so, does the Fed have the tools to cap if not reverse higher inflation? Yes, but that leads to another question: Will the Fed use those tools in a timely manner?\nHere’s where the outlook become hazy, in part because expectations on this front depend on whether you think the central bank has become overly politicized. One line of worry runs as follows: debt levels (for government and the private sector) have increased sharply in recent years and so higher rates will create burdens that the economy can’t tolerate.\nThere’s some truth in that concern, although the pushback is that if the Fed tightens policy sufficiently early, any upside inflation surprise will be curtailed and so interest rate hikes will be modest.\nThere’s also the potential for deploying hawkish Fed rhetoric as a tool to convince the markets that the central bank will remain vigilant on keeping inflation contained. There was a hint of this last week, when St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said that rate hikes may begin sooner than expected – comments that triggered a decline in commodities prices and Treasury yields.\nThere’s still a lot of uncertainty about inflation’s trajectory, but there are nascent signs that the recent surge is peaking. For example, a multi-factor measure of the directional bias for US inflation – based on The Capital Spectator’s Inflation Trend Index — continues to suggest that June will mark the high point for the recent swelling of pricing pressure.\nInflation Trend Index\nIn addition, the Cleveland Fed’s inflation forecasting model projects that after this year’s pop in prices, the trend will ease in the years ahead. For example, over the next five years this model sees inflation at around 1.5%. Every model is wrong, but some are useful. On that point, Mark Hulbert at MarketWatch.com reports that the Cleveland Fed’s model has a relatively strong record vs. the University of Michigan’s consumer survey of inflation expectations and the Treasury market’s implied inflation outlook.\nKeep in mind, too, that political pressure will probably rise for the Fed to act if inflation appears to remain higher than expected. In addition to reduced attendance at its theme parks, Disney is dealing with lower movie theater attendance. The icing on the cake is that streaming service losses have come in wider than expected, at a time when investors have been more critical of bottom-line results than at any point over the past decade.But if Walt Disney has demonstrated anything over many decades, it's that the company is resilient. This is due to a multitude of competitive advantages.For example, few companies have the ability to engage with consumers quite like Walt Disney. Whether it's a 4-year-old visiting Disneyland for the first time or a grandparent watching a Disney movie with their grandchild, the company's products, services, and characters are designed to connect people of all ages through the use of imagination.This leads to another key point: Walt Disney has superior pricing power. Since Disneyland opened in Southern California in 1955, the price of the cheapest admission ticket has climbed 10,300%! Comparatively, that's about 10 times the rate of inflation in the U.S. since 1955. People have shown for nearly seven decades that they're willing to pay a premium for the experience Disney can offer them, their family, and their friends.The company's streaming segment can also become a key growth driver by mid-decade. First, the company has been losing central processing unit (CPU) market share in personal computers (PCs), mobile, and data center servers to key rival Advanced Micro Devices. Secondly, Intel is a cyclical company. A weaker U.S. growth outlook, coupled with supply chain issues and historically high inflation, is generally bad news for its revenue and profit outlook.While there's no doubt Intel is facing some very tangible near-term headwinds, the company has positioned its puzzle pieces for long-term success.For example, Intel broke ground on two chip manufacturing plants in Ohio earlier this year. This $20 billion project, set to begin production in 2024, is designed to expand Intel's Foundry Services segment. Best of all, with President Joe Biden signing the CHIPS and Science Act into law in August, nearly $53 billion in subsidies are now available to aid with the construction of domestic chip manufacturing sites.Pessimists have also, arguably, made a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to Intel's lost CPU market share. While no lost market share should be taken for granted, Intel is still very much in the driver's seat in PCs, mobile, and data center servers.  The cash flow being generated from these arenas is what's helping to fuel the company'ssuperior dividend (5% yield), as well as its investments in higher-growth initiatives.One of the more exciting opportunities for Intel is the growth of autonomous vehicle company Mobileye Global. Intel acquired Mobileye for $15.3 billion in 2017 and remains the majority shareholder following Mobileye's initial public offering in late October. Mobileye has been generating record sales, with annual run-rate revenue now up to $1.8 billion.For long-term investors, Intel offers an exceptional risk-to-reward at its current share price.SalesforceThe third and final Dow stock that makes for a phenomenal end-of-year buy is cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) software provider Salesforce. CRM software is used by consumer-facing businesses to improve existing client engagement and boost sales.Like the other Dow components on this list, Salesforce stock has been bludgeoned in 2022. Shares are down 40%, which is considerably worse than the noted (5.5%) year-to-date return for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This weakness can primarily be blamed on the U.S. economy and hawkish monetary policy. The growing likelihood of a recession, coupled with the removal of cheap capital as interest rates rise, probably means Salesforce will see a slowdown in demand for its CRM software.Of course, Salesforce wouldn't be on this list if it didn't possess clearly identifiable competitive advantages that can sustain double-digit growth and make its patient shareholders richer over time.The first thing to note about Salesforce is just how dominant it's become in the CRM space. Not only has the company been the No. 1 ranked global CRM software provider for the past nine years, according to IDC, but it's been steadily expanding its industry-leading market share for pretty much the entire time. It ended 2021 having accounted for 23.8% of global CRM spending. That's more than its four closest competitors on a combined basis.To build on this point, CRM software is a sustained double-digit growth opportunity. Though service-oriented companies are the most logical customer, we're seeing increasing usage of CRM software from the industrial, financial, and healthcare sectors. Translation: Salesforce has a hearty organic growth opportunity on its plate.On top of steady organic growth, co-founder and co-CEO Marc Benioff has helped orchestrate a number of key acquisitions. Some of the best-known deals include Tableau Software, MuleSoft, and Slack Technologies. As for timing, he says that the decline could begin at any time, but he anticipates that it will begin no later than mid-August.</p>\n<p><b>The source of the market’s ill-health</b></p>\n<p>Martin bases his sobering forecast on the increasing divergences within the U.S. market, as indicated by fewer and fewer stocks participating in the headline-grabbing strength of the leading indices. One indicator of these divergences is the growing number of stocks hitting new lows, for example. On Wednesday of this week, for example, even as the Nasdaq 100NDX,-0.71%and the S&amp;P 100OEX,-0.37%indexes were hitting new highs, many sectors were registering a plurality of new lows.</p>\n<p>This was particularly evident in the small- and mid-cap sectors, as represented by the Russell 2000 index. On July 13 there were more new lows than new highs within that index for the second consecutive day. In Martin’s data for the Russell 2000’s new highs and new lows, which extends back to June 2000, what happened this week has happened only three other times — in September 2014, July 2015 and October 2018. In all three cases, three months later both the S&amp;P 500 and Russell 2000 were at least 10% lower.</p>\n<p>Martin reports that the only area of the market not showing dangerous divergences right now is the large-cap dominated S&amp;P 500. Except for that sector, he says that the “stock market’s current internals are some of the worst I’ve seen in decades.”</p>\n<p>Martin added that these severe divergences are occurring as equities are severely overvalued — with some stocks in bubble territory. This means that, when the market does decline, it’s likely to fall more than it would otherwise.</p>\n<p>Adding fuel to the fire, he continued, is the too-bullish investor sentiment that prevails right now. As contrarians remind us, such sentiment extremes mean that the path of least resistance for the market is down.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Martin concluded, stocks have been overvalued for some time now, and bullish sentiment has been at or close to extremes. The missing piece was market divergences. In Martin’s data for the Russell 2000’s new highs and new lows, which extends back to June 2000, what happened this week has happened only three other times — in September 2014, July 2015 and October 2018. In all three cases, three months later both the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 were at least 10% lower.\nMartin reports that the only area of the market not showing dangerous divergences right now is the large-cap dominated S&P 500. Except for that sector, he says that the “stock market’s current internals are some of the worst I’ve seen in decades.”\nMartin added that these severe divergences are occurring as equities are severely overvalued — with some stocks in bubble territory. This means that, when the market does decline, it’s likely to fall more than it would otherwise.\nAdding fuel to the fire, he continued, is the too-bullish investor sentiment that prevails right now. As contrarians remind us, such sentiment extremes mean that the path of least resistance for the market is down.\nTo be sure, Martin concluded, stocks have been overvalued for some time now, and bullish sentiment has been at or close to extremes. The missing piece was market divergences. What is surprising is which direction it went.Shares dropped after the EV trailblazer reported third-quarter production and delivery results. Rather than bailing due to the lower-than-expected deliveries, investors should focus more on what the reaction means for the stock and what the underlying business is doing. That might change some sellers' minds.Look at production growthTesla reported a quarterly record with almost 344,000 vehicles delivered. Investors expected more and the report triggered a sell-off in the stock. That reaction was despite the fact that those deliveries were 42% higher than the prior year period, and a 35% jump over the prior quarter. But none of those numbers are really what's important for long-term investors.What really mattered in that report was the nearly 366,000 vehicles Tesla actually produced in the third quarter. That alone represents a pace of 1.45 million vehicles produced annually. And that comes despite several headwinds the company is facing right now. Many EV makers are having trouble getting parts, but Tesla is navigating supply chain disruptions well.The company has had to deal with lockdowns disrupting production at its Shanghai facility, and it is still working through the challenges associated with ramping up its two newest facilities in Austin, Texas and near Berlin, Germany.Investors shouldn't be worried about the discrepancy between produced vehicles and deliveries in the third quarter, however. All of its production has buyers, but the company said it is working to find enough \"vehicle transportation capacity and at a reasonable cost.\" Those logistics issues for shipping finished products are magnified thanks to the sharp increase in production growth. That's a good problem to have and should really encourage investors rather than scare them.Beyond just carsTesla isn't just about electric cars, either. The company will share its full third-quarter results on Oct. 19, 2022, and there will likely be other news items of interest from that. CEO Elon Musk has previously said he expects the Tesla Semi battery-electric truck to begin shipping this year and the Cybertruck next year. Those could both become further growth drivers for the company.Tesla also should benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in several ways. The new law resumes tax credits for EV buyers for some manufacturers -- including Tesla -- that had surpassed prior production limits. Those credits previously ended after a manufacturer sold more than 200,000 vehicles. The IRA now has limits on vehicle list prices and requirements for more of the supply chain to be based in the U.S. Tesla's lower-priced vehicles will be eligible under the price limit, and it already does some of its battery production domestically. The company is also now investigating whether to build a lithium refining facility in the U.S.Its battery production gigafactories support internal production, but Tesla has also been increasing production of battery storage and solar systems that it sells to outside customers. In its second-quarter report, the company said it continues to ramp up Megapack storage production as customer interest \"remains strong and well above our production rate.\"Why would some sell the stock?However, some investors have a logical reason to sell the stock. Analysts expect earnings in the back half of 2022 to be 50% higher than the first half. If that comes to fruition, Tesla stock is already trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 56 based on 2022 earnings.That's a high valuation in any market, and the recent market sell-off has many investors looking more for safety than risky assets. But Tesla believes it still has several more years where it will boost EV production at a 50% annual rate. That would bring the valuation down relatively quickly and could give long-term investors winning returns.
