worst start in years as the equities market continues to find form. Several stocks trading at frothy valuations have faced massive corrections and are trading at more rational prices. Despite the pull-back, though, many overrated stocks continue to trade unattractively.Overvalued stocks typically trade at prices that are divorced from their fundamentals and near-term outlooks. Their price metrics, including their price-to-earnings (P/E), price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, and other related metrics, are normally much higher than their sector averages.The current bear market has created several buying opportunities for investors, but Wall Street has taken a liking to several overrated stocks, which should be avoided. Having said that, let’s look at seven of them that you should probably avoid investing in now.Zoom Video Communications(ZM)Video conferencing giant Zoom Video Communications (NASDAQ:ZM)  was one of the tech companies that benefitted immensely from the pandemic.Zoom’s video conferencing services greatly advance the remote working trend, with millions confined to their homes. However, the pandemic boom is over, and despite having a great product, the company’s muddled outlook makes it an unattractive pick at current prices.Zoom’s software is incredibly robust, but with the emergence of multiple competitors in its niche, it’s not irreplicable. We are seeing the cracks already, with top-line growth slowing down in the past few quarters.Its first-quarter results for fiscal 2023 showed a 12.30% revenue bump, which pales in comparison to the 191.40% it posted in the same period last year. Moreover, Zoom isn’t like Microsoft, which could potentially offset losses from Teams with other more profitable products and services, which makes it one of the overrated stocks out there.Canoo(GOEV)Canoo (NASDAQ:GOEV)  is a pre-revenue electric vehicle startup that is burning through its cash balances at an aggressive pace.It warned investors that it has enough funds for six months to a year in its first quarter results. Though its stock price has lost most of its post-SPAC gains, it’s still trading at close to eight times forward sales estimates, which makes it among the overrated stocks to avoid.Its first-quarter results showed a massive increase in operational expenses from $140.8 million to $97.1 million in the same quarter last year.Net losses came in at $125.4 million, while free cash flows were at a negative $148.8 million.On top of that, management sounded the alarm over the company’s financial flexibility. These negative developments come at a time when Canoo is looking to ramp up production to meet its pre-orders.Rivian(RIVN)Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN)  is another emerging EV company that captured Wall Street’s attention with its SUVs and electric pickup trucks.It went public via a reverse merger with a shell company in November last year and was soon valued at a whopping $83 billion. However, the stock has now lost its luster in line with the broader market. Nevertheless, it still trades at a nosebleed valuation, which its murky outlook can hardly justify.Rivian has run into familiar territory, as have many EV companies. The firm is struggling with its supply chain while burning through its cash reserves at a frantic pace.It is likely to squander its first-mover advantage in its niche as it looks to navigate through the delay in order deliveries and workforce reductions.Alarm.com Holdings(ALRM)Alarm.com Holdings (NASDAQ:ALRM) is one of the top smart home/property platforms.Over the past several years, its stock has performed exceedingly well in line with its fundamentals.Its operational metrics, including earnings and sales, have grown at double-digits. It operates a sticky business that continues to generate healthy cash flows.So where’s the problem? For starters, its performances of late have been relatively unimpressive compared to the past five years. Its growth rates are slowing down while its peers are still in line with their historical averages.Moreover, the stock trades at a lofty valuation, and its price metrics are all over the place. It trades at almost 54 times its cash flows, significantly higher than its five-year average. Though it has an exciting outlook, it’s one of the overrates stocks that’s likely to get worse before it gets better.Match Group(MTCH)Match Group (NASDAQ:MTCH) operates multiple online dating sites and has established itself as a leader in the niche. It benefitted from the pandemic-led tailwinds, which have now faded away for its businesses.Hence, it finds itself at a crossroads with a slowdown in top-line growth. Paid users have dropped considerably of late as the business looks to revitalize its growth rates in the post-pandemic world.The company’s much-acclaimed CEO, Shar Dubey, parted ways with the company during the first quarter. Dubey had been instrumental in launching Match’s most successful product, Tinder.Moreover, recently released results have slowed down dramatically as its management looks to launch new features to boost engagement. It would be tough to buck the long-term trend and achieve pandemic-era numbers. However, its stock price paints a different story altogether.Bumble(BMBL)Bumble (NASDAQ:BMBL) is a top social media enterprise focusing on social networking and online dating.Similar to Match, Bumble’s business flourished during the pandemic but now faces multiple challenges. Competitive pressures and a challenging macro-economic position are to blame for the company’s current predicament.Recessionary pressures are likely to cripple spending on its dating applications, hurting its near-term prospects. Though it’s been an excellent performer over the past few years, BMBL stock’s price is trading at unjustifiable levels. Given the current risk-off environment, it’s best to avoid BMBL and other growth stocks that are still trading at high valuations.Boston Beer(SAM)During the pandemic, beer brewer (Boston Beer (NYSE:SAM) saw a strong uptick in operating results. Its sales numbers improved by double-digits for the bulk of the pandemic years. However, since the fourth quarter of last year, it has witnessed a massive reversion in revenue and earnings.Managing its rapid growth has been remarkably tough in the face of stiff competition and supply chain issues.Boston has proven to be more volatile than other brewers, given its focus on specialty categories. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) all have already completed their splits during the past two years.</p><p>Technically speaking, stock splits don’t change the value of a company or its investors’ holdings. However, the split decision illustrates the growing influence of retail investors on the market in modern times and the companies’ desire to make their investment appeal wider.</p><p>That said, investors shouldn’t make their investment decisions based on stock splits. Instead, the company’s business fundamentals and its valuation matter the most. On that account, Google stock is an attractive long-term buy.</p><p><b>20% Plunge In Shares</b></p><p>Its stock, which has dropped more than 20% this year amid a widespread sell-off in tech shares, is in a much better position to withstand a looming recession that could force companies to reduce their digital ad spending, depressing Alphabet’s revenues.</p><p>According to Google’s Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, the second-quarter results will be impacted by the Russian war in Ukraine, a worsening macro environment, tougher comparisons against pandemic highs and changing foreign exchange rates.</p><p>Ahead of the earnings announcement later this month, some equity analysts have lowered estimates for YouTube sales in part to reflect the heightened competition from ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok video app. Google is also facing a tougher regulatory environment in Europe. Google’s second-largest business line, its network system that runs ads elsewhere on the web, was likely limited by new regulations in Europe that restricted ad targeting.</p><p>Still, the company&#39;s diverse portfolio and its dominant position in the digital ad market make it hard to ignore.</p><p>Google’s search advertising business, the company’s main revenue driver, gained 24% in Q1, while its Cloud unit sales increased 44%, showing that the company’s efforts to catch up to market leaders  – Amazon.com and Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) –  are paying off.</p><p>This strength in Google’s business model is the main reason that analysts on Wall Street overwhelmingly support buying the stock at these levels. Friday’s market action proved that.</p>\n<p>It’s true that there could be a correction, given the already sizable 17% gain in the S&amp;P 500 Index&nbsp;this year. But you should buy then, too.</p>\n<p>Here’s why.</p>\n<p>We are still only in the early stages of what is going to be a three- to five-year bull market in stocks, for these six reasons.</p>\n<p><b>1. There’s tremendous pent-up demand</b></p>\n<p>Everyone is looking to the Federal Reserve for cues about stimulus. They are overlooking private-sector forces that will push stocks higher. To sum up, there’s huge pent-up private-sector demand that will help propel U.S. GDP growth to 8% this year and 3.5%-4.5% for years after that. The pent-up demand comes from the following sources, points out Jim Paulsen, chief strategist and economist at the Leuthold Group.</p>\n<p>First, there’s been a surge in household formation, as millennials hit the family years. This helps explain the big uptick in home demand. Once you buy a house, you have to fill it up with stuff. More consumer demand on the way.</p>\n<p>Behind the scenes, consumers have massive unspent savings because they hunkered down for the pandemic. The personal savings rate hit nearly 16% of GDP, compared to a post war average of 6.5%. The prior high was 10% in 1970s.</p>\n<p>Relatedly, household balance sheets improved remarkably. Debt-to-income ratios are the lowest since the 1990s. Consumers will continue to tap more bank loans and credit card capacity, as their confidence increases because employment and the economy remain strong.</p>\n<p>Next, there will be plenty more newly employed people once the extra unemployment benefits expire in September. This means consumer confidence will improve, which invariably boosts economic growth. The labor participation rate has room to improve, leaving spare employment capacity before we hit the full employment that can cap economic growth.</p>\n<p>Now let’s look at the pent-up demand in businesses.</p>\n<p>You know all the shortages of stuff you keep running into or hearing about? Here’s why this is happening. To prepare for a prolonged epidemic, businesses cut inventories to the bone. It was the biggest inventory liquidation ever. But now, companies have to build back inventories. The ongoing inventory rebuild will be huge.</p>\n<p>Companies also cut capacity, which they are building out again. Capital goods spending surged to record highs in the past year, advancing almost 23%, after being essentially flat for most of the prior two decades. This creates sustained growth, and it tells us a lot about business confidence.</p>\n<p><b>The bottom line</b>: We will see 7%-8% GDP growth this year, followed by 4%-4.5% next year and above average growth after that, supporting a sustained bull market in stocks. Expect the normal corrections along the way.</p>\n<p><b>2. An under-appreciated earnings boom lies ahead</b></p>\n<p>The economic rebound has happened so quickly, analysts can’t keep up. Wall Street analysts project $190 a share in S&amp;P 500 earnings this year. But that is woefully low given the expected 7%-8% GDP growth and massive stimulus that has yet to kick in. Stimulus normally takes six to eight months to take effect, and a lot of the recent dollops happened inside that window.</p>\n<p>Paulsen expects 2021 S&amp;P 500 earnings will be more like $220 instead of the consensus estimate of $190.</p>\n<p>“Analysts are still under-appreciating how much profits have improved and how much they will improve,” says Paulsen. “We had dramatic overreaction from policy officials. They addressed the collapse, but created a massive improvement in fundamentals. This is still playing out in terms of the recovery in profits.”</p>\n<p>Plus, more fiscal stimulus is probably on the way, in the form of infrastructure spending.</p>\n<p><b>3. There’s a new Fed in town</b></p>\n<p>For much of the past three decades, the Fed has been quick to tighten its policy to ward off inflation. The central bank killed off growth in the process. That’s one reason why the past 20 years posted the slowest growth in the post-war era. Now, though, the Fed is much more accommodative and this may likely persist because inflation will remain sluggish (more on this, below).</p>\n<p>Here’s a simple gauge to measure this. Take GDP growth and subtract the yield on 10-year TreasuriesTMUBMUSD10Y,1.359%.This gauge was negative for much of 1980-2010, when the Fed kept growth cool to contain inflation. Now, though, Fed policy is helping to keep 10-year yields well below GDP growth, which allows the economy to run hot. This was the state of affairs during 1950-1965, which some analysts call “the golden age of capitalism” because of the glide path in growth.</p>\n<p><b>4. Inflation won’t kill the bull</b></p>\n<p>Inflation may rise near term because the economy is so hot. But medium term, the inflation slayers will win out. Here’s a roundup. The population is aging, and older people spend less. The boom in business capital spending will continue to boost productivity at companies. This allows them to avoid passing along rising costs to customers. Global trade and competition have not gone away. This puts downward pressure on prices since goods can be made more cheaply in many foreign countries. Ongoing technological advances continually put downward pressure on tech products.</p>\n<p><b>5. Valuations will improve</b></p>\n<p>We’re now at the phase in the economic rebound where the following dynamic typically plays out. Stocks trade sideways for months, mostly because of worries about inflation and rising bond yields. All the while, the economy and earnings continue to grow, bringing down stock valuations. This dynamic played out at about this point in prior economic rebounds during 1983-84, 1993-94, 2004-05 and 2009-10. In short, we will see a big surge in earnings while the stock market marks time, or even corrects.</p>\n<p>This will reset stock valuations lower, removing one of the chief concerns among investors — high valuations. If S&amp;P 500 earnings hit $220 by the end of the year and the index is at 4,000 to 4,100 points because of a correction, stocks will be at an 18-19 price earnings ratio — below the average since 1990.</p>\n<p>True to form, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,+1.30%and the Russell 2000&nbsp;small-cap index have traded sideways for two to four months. The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq&nbsp;recently broke out of trading ranges, but a bigger pullback would send them back into sideways action mode.</p>\n<p><b>6. Sentiment isn’t extreme</b></p>\n<p>As a contrarian, I look for excessive sentiment as a sign that it’s time to raise some cash. We don’t see that yet. A simple gauge to follow is the Investors Intelligence Bull/Bear ratio. It recently came in at 3.92. That’s near the warning path, which for me starts at 4. On the other hand, mutual fund cash was recently at $4.6 trillion, near historical highs. This represents caution among investors.</p>\n<p><b>Three themes to follow</b></p>\n<p>If we are in store for a sustained economic recovery and a multi-year bull market in stocks, it will pay to follow these three themes.</p>\n<p><b>Favor cyclicals.</b>Stay with economically sensitive businesses and add to your holdings in them on pullbacks. This means cyclical companies in areas like financials, materials, industrials and consumer discretionary businesses.</p>\n<p><b>Avoid defensives.</b>If you want yield, go with stocks that pay a dividend but also have capital appreciation potential — not steady growth companies selling stuff like consumer staples. On this theme, in my stock letter Brush Up on Stocks (the link is in bio, below) I’ve recently suggested or reiterated Home Depot&nbsp;in retail, B. Riley Financial,a markets and investment banking name, and Regional Management&nbsp;in consumer finance.</p>\n<p><b>Favor emerging markets.</b>Their growth tends to be higher during expansions. Just be careful with China. It has an aging population. Limited workforce growth may constrain economic growth. We are seeing the cracks already, with top-line growth slowing down in the past few quarters.Its first-quarter results for fiscal 2023 showed a 12.30% revenue bump, which pales in comparison to the 191.40% it posted in the same period last year. Moreover, Zoom isn’t like Microsoft, which could potentially offset losses from Teams with other more profitable products and services, which makes it one of the overrated stocks out there.Canoo(GOEV)Canoo (NASDAQ:GOEV)  is a pre-revenue electric vehicle startup that is burning through its cash balances at an aggressive pace.It warned investors that it has enough funds for six months to a year in its first quarter results. Though its stock price has lost most of its post-SPAC gains, it’s still trading at close to eight times forward sales estimates, which makes it among the overrated stocks to avoid.Its first-quarter results showed a massive increase in operational expenses from $140.8 million to $97.1 million in the same quarter last year.Net losses came in at $125.4 million, while free cash flows were at a negative $148.8 million.On top of that, management sounded the alarm over the company’s financial flexibility. These negative developments come at a time when Canoo is looking to ramp up production to meet its pre-orders.Rivian(RIVN)Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN)  is another emerging EV company that captured Wall Street’s attention with its SUVs and electric pickup trucks.It went public via a reverse merger with a shell company in November last year and was soon valued at a whopping $83 billion. However, the stock has now lost its luster in line with the broader market. Nevertheless, it still trades at a nosebleed valuation, which its murky outlook can hardly justify.Rivian has run into familiar territory, as have many EV companies. The firm is struggling with its supply chain while burning through its cash reserves at a frantic pace.It is likely to squander its first-mover advantage in its niche as it looks to navigate through the delay in order deliveries and workforce reductions.Alarm.com Holdings(ALRM)Alarm.com Holdings (NASDAQ:ALRM) is one of the top smart home/property platforms.Over the past several years, its stock has performed exceedingly well in line with its fundamentals.Its operational metrics, including earnings and sales, have grown at double-digits. It operates a sticky business that continues to generate healthy cash flows.So where’s the problem? For starters, its performances of late have been relatively unimpressive compared to the past five years. Its growth rates are slowing down while its peers are still in line with their historical averages.Moreover, the stock trades at a lofty valuation, and its price metrics are all over the place. It trades at almost 54 times its cash flows, significantly higher than its five-year average.
