We highlighted in our previous article that NVIDIA could continue to underperform the market, even though we assessed that it was near its bottom.</p><p>While we expected NVDA to stage a short-term rally from its June lows, we didn&#39;t envisage NVDA to continue outperforming the market. Notably, NVDA has underperformed the Invesco QQQ ETF (QQQ) and the Technology ETF (XLK) over the past two months (even before yesterday&#39;s sell-off).</p><p>We maintain our conviction that the market has materially de-rated NVDA, despite its battering from its November 2021 highs. Management has failed to convince us when chips are down that Nvidia could overcome the market&#39;s cyclical nature with its so-called &#34;secular&#34; opportunities.</p><p>Coupled with potentially slowing revenue growth and its steep growth premium, we urge investors to find other well-beaten down opportunities in growth and tech stocks to add exposure. Notwithstanding, we expect semis to have bottomed out and do not expect much further downside in NVDA. As a result, we urge investors not to sell in panic.</p><p>Therefore, we reiterate our Hold rating on NVDA for now.</p><p><b>Nvidia Lost Credibility With Its Caution</b></p><p>We are shareholders of NVDA, which account for a reasonable weighting in our portfolio. Therefore, we consider the warning on its Q2 prelim release a massive disappointment but not unexpected.</p><p>We vividly remember Broadcom (AVGO)CEO Hock Tan cautioned about the current semi downturn in September 2021, demonstrating his prescience and credibility. We also highlighted his comments in our article last year, as he accentuated:</p><blockquote>And to answer your question point-blank, I do not see any specific drivers or reasons why the strength we see today is really nothing more than of an exaggerated up-cycle. We always go through a period of digestion. There&#39;s no way we can consume on all that forever. And that&#39;s what is called a cycle, particularly when we expect supply to come into play out of this - out of the current tightness, but dated back to 2020 to start coming in 2023. And the massive investment and CapEx will start deploying capacity in &#39;23 earliest. Then I see &#39;23 where we have supply. And I think digestion of demand might just start to occur. (Broadcom article)</blockquote><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/66ac20e2b8ed62af8f2aeaa78f94ad5e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Nvidia gaming and data center revenue change %(Company filings)</p><p>Nvidia warned in its preliminary release for FQ2&#39;23that it expects to post revenue of $6.7B, up by just 3% YoY, down significantly from its previous outlook of $8.1B (up 24.4%).</p><p>The main culprit is gaming, as Nvidia highlighted that it expects gaming to post a decline of 33.4%, as seen above, even though data center growth remains robust. However, Nvidia&#39;s gaming growth has already trended down consistently from its peak growth in FQ1&#39;22, as gaming started to lap challenging comps, complicated by the post-pandemic reopening.</p><p>Furthermore, the destruction in crypto mining added to the headwinds in gaming cards ASPs, creating further challenges for Nvidia as it prepares to launch its RTX 40-series Ada Lovelace graphics.</p><p>But, Nvidia has consistently maintained its &#34;strong&#34; belief in its gaming segment, often accentuating its strength and consistency. CEO Jensen Huang highlighted in a June conference that he expects gaming to continue posting robust growth cadence. He articulated:</p><blockquote>China is a significant market. Russia is a meaningful market for our gaming business. However, gaming remains solid even in the face of China and Russia. Q1 sell-through grew year-over-year over last year, which was a really fantastic year. And so gaming sell-through remains solid. (BofA 2022 Global Technology Conference)</blockquote><p>But, consider what Huang emphasized two months later in Nvidia&#39;s prelim release. He said:</p><blockquote>Our gaming product sell-through projections declined significantly as the quarter progressed. As we expect the macroeconomic conditions affecting sell-through to continue, we took action with our Gaming partners to adjust channel prices and inventory. - Nvidia</blockquote><p>Therefore, we believe Huang &amp; team has lost some credibility with us. Moreover, it shows that the company overstated its forecasting models, resulting in weak execution. Given Nvidia&#39;s experience navigating the previous crypto downturn in 2018, we are highly disappointed with how management has managed its guidance heading into its Q2 prelim release.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8cf57b7e1fc91128408275fb9e5712e2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Nvidia pro viz and automotive revenue change %(Company filings)</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s pro visualization segment&#39;s growth has also slowed down markedly, reflecting the weakness in its gaming segment. Therefore, the euphoria over the Omniverse opportunity has yet to gain significant traction. As a result, we urge investors to pay attention to its data center growth cadence moving forward, as it&#39;s critical to underpin NVDA&#39;s expensive valuation.</p><p>Automotive is the bright spot after tepid growth over the past four quarters. However, QUALCOMM (QCOM) remains confident that it&#39;s the leading player with its digital chassis, given the size of its design pipeline and growth momentum. Therefore, we urge Nvidia investors to pay close attention to Qualcomm&#39;s performance and not simply buy into Nvidia&#39;s commentary on its auto momentum.</p><p>Qualcomm highlighted in a May conference that its digital chassis competes with Mobileye (INTC) directly, suggesting two of them are leading the pack, without mentioning Nvidia. Management also accentuated in its recent Q3 earnings that it has garnered more than $19B in its auto design pipeline, and delivered auto revenue of $350M, up 38% YoY. Furthermore, the company emphasized that its open platform helps spur adoption by auto OEMs. Therefore, Nvidia investors need to assess the competition from Qualcomm carefully.</p><p><b>Is NVDA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</b></p><p>We are confident that NVDA has likely staged its medium-term bottom in June, in line with its semi peers.</p><p>But, growth and tech investors are spoilt for choice, given the tech bear market. As a result, management has lost some credibility with us.Broadcom warned in September 2021 that the current cycle was unsustainable. But, we have not observed such early warning in Nvidia's commentary. Therefore, execution is very poor.We reiterate our Hold rating, as we believe NVDA could continue underperforming the market.ThesisNVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) stunned the market as it announced its Q2 preliminary results that came in well below its guidance and the Street's consensus. We highlighted in our previous article that NVIDIA could continue to underperform the market, even though we assessed that it was near its bottom.While we expected NVDA to stage a short-term rally from its June lows, we didn't envisage NVDA to continue outperforming the market. Notably, NVDA has underperformed the Invesco QQQ ETF (QQQ) and the Technology ETF (XLK) over the past two months (even before yesterday's sell-off).We maintain our conviction that the market has materially de-rated NVDA, despite its battering from its November 2021 highs. Management has failed to convince us when chips are down that Nvidia could overcome the market's cyclical nature with its so-called \"secular\" opportunities.Coupled with potentially slowing revenue growth and its steep growth premium, we urge investors to find other well-beaten down opportunities in growth and tech stocks to add exposure. Notwithstanding, we expect semis to have bottomed out and do not expect much further downside in NVDA. As a result, we urge investors not to sell in panic.Therefore, we reiterate our Hold rating on NVDA for now.Nvidia Lost Credibility With Its CautionWe are shareholders of NVDA, which account for a reasonable weighting in our portfolio. Therefore, we consider the warning on its Q2 prelim release a massive disappointment but not unexpected.We vividly remember Broadcom (AVGO)CEO Hock Tan cautioned about the current semi downturn in September 2021, demonstrating his prescience and credibility. We also highlighted his comments in our article last year, as he accentuated:And to answer your question point-blank, I do not see any specific drivers or reasons why the strength we see today is really nothing more than of an exaggerated up-cycle. We always go through a period of digestion. There's no way we can consume on all that forever. And that's what is called a cycle, particularly when we expect supply to come into play out of this - out of the current tightness, but dated back to 2020 to start coming in 2023. And the massive investment and CapEx will start deploying capacity in '23 earliest. Then I see '23 where we have supply. And I think digestion of demand might just start to occur. However, Nvidia's gaming growth has already trended down consistently from its peak growth in FQ1'22, as gaming started to lap challenging comps, complicated by the post-pandemic reopening.Furthermore, the destruction in crypto mining added to the headwinds in gaming cards ASPs, creating further challenges for Nvidia as it prepares to launch its RTX 40-series Ada Lovelace graphics.But, Nvidia has consistently maintained its \"strong\" belief in its gaming segment, often accentuating its strength and consistency. CEO Jensen Huang highlighted in a June conference that he expects gaming to continue posting robust growth cadence. He articulated:China is a significant market. Therefore, the euphoria over the Omniverse opportunity has yet to gain significant traction. As a result, we urge investors to pay attention to its data center growth cadence moving forward, as it's critical to underpin NVDA's expensive valuation.Automotive is the bright spot after tepid growth over the past four quarters. However, QUALCOMM (QCOM) remains confident that it's the leading player with its digital chassis, given the size of its design pipeline and growth momentum. Therefore, we urge Nvidia investors to pay close attention to Qualcomm's performance and not simply buy into Nvidia's commentary on its auto momentum.Qualcomm highlighted in a May conference that its digital chassis competes with Mobileye (INTC) directly, suggesting two of them are leading the pack, without mentioning Nvidia. Management also accentuated in its recent Q3 earnings that it has garnered more than $19B in its auto design pipeline, and delivered auto revenue of $350M, up 38% YoY. Furthermore, the company emphasized that its open platform helps spur adoption by auto OEMs. Therefore, Nvidia investors need to assess the competition from Qualcomm carefully.Is NVDA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?We are confident that NVDA has likely staged its medium-term bottom in June, in line with its semi peers.But, growth and tech investors are spoilt for choice, given the tech bear market. Ron Baron, founder of investment management firm Baron Capital, recently went on CNBC to say that the bear market we’re in presents a “once-in-a-generation buying opportunity” for investors to pick-up stocks of quality companies at distressed prices.Legendary investor Warren Buffett has bought more stocks this year than he has at any time over the last decade, spending $51 billion in the process and adhering to his own mantra that investors should: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”With market volatility near all-time highs and both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes each down more than 20% and firmly in bear market territory, the conditions are right for investors to steady their nerves and add some great stocks to their portfolio while prices are at their lowest levels since before the pandemic hit in March 2020. Here are seven stocks to buy right now.AppleThe market downturn this year has washed out a lot of unprofitable high-growth technology stocks that were grossly overvalued coming out of the pandemic. However, the rout has also dragged down the share prices of the very best tech concerns, presenting a huge opportunity to investors.Case in point is consumer electronic giant Apple, whose stock is down nearly 24% this year at $136.13 a share. The drop in AAPL stock does not reflect thevaluation of the companyor its earnings, which have remained robust despite some headwinds in terms of manufacturing in China and global supply chain disruptions.At the end of April, Apple reported quarterly results that showed its revenue grew nearly 9% year-over-year during this year’s first quarter. The company also announced plans to buy back $90 billion of its own stock. Plus, the company has continued to announce a raft of product upgrades and new services in recent months, including a buy now, pay later feature that moves Apple further into the finance space.By almost every measure, Apple continues to fire on all cylinders. This helps explain why Warren Buffettadded to his position in AAPL stockduring this year’s first quarter as the price fell, buying an additional $600 million worth of shares.“Unfortunately the stock went back up, so I stopped. Otherwise who knows how much we would have bought?” Buffett said at his company Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting in early May.FordSpeaking of great American companies whose stock is available at fire sale prices, how about automotive powerhouse Ford? Year to date, F stock is down 45% to $11.45 a share. This is after the Detroit automaker’s stock ran up more than 100% in 2021 to hit a 52-week high of $25.87.The decline in recent months has been mostly due toglobal supply chain issuesthat are impacting all automakers, and concerns that a global economic recession could lead consumers to put off big ticket purchases such as a new vehicle. However, these issues are temporary and shouldn’t get in the way of Ford’s long-term transition to electric vehicles.Already, Ford is rolling out electric versions of its most popular vehicles, the F-150 pick-up truck, that hastopped the North American sales chartsevery year since 1976, and its iconic Mustang muscle car. The electric F-150 truck already has more than 200,000 preorders. And it is just one of the electric vehicles Ford is set to release as the company aggressively moves tochallenge rival Tesla as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer.To that end, Ford recently announced plans to invest $3.7 billion in its development of electric vehicles, which is on top of the $11.4 billion it had already committed. The money is expected to create more than 6,000 unionized manufacturing jobs in states such as Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. Ford is also in the process of building new battery manufacturing facilities in Tennessee and Kentucky. The money spent on Ford’s electric future should benefit shareholders over the long-term.American ExpressCredit card giant American Express has proven to be a reliable investment through good times and bad. In the past five years, AXP stock has gained approximately 75%, and risen 1,075% since the low point of the 2008-09 financial crisis. Yet, at its current share price of $141.95, American Express stock is only slightly above its 52-week low, making it as creaming buy for investors who have a long time horizon.At the start of this year, American Express stock was near $200, and most analysts see itclimbing back to that levelonce the current market downturn reverses. The lowest estimate on the stock is currently $146 a share, or nearly two bucks higher than where it’s currently trading.Like all financial companies, American Express’ earnings should be positively impacted as interest rates rise, enabling it to charge higher rates on the credit cards and other loan vehicles it issues.Wells Fargo recently named AXP stock a top pick, noting that “The shares are trading at 14 times our 2023 earnings estimate. [That’s] well below the 18 times we believe is warranted for this high return on equity business.”Additionally, American Express enjoys more affluent card members than rival credit card issuers, which Wells Fargo says brings with it lucrative partners in the form of hotels, airlines and various retailers.AmazonAmazon recentlysplit its stock on a 20-for-1 basis, bringing the price down to $123 a share from more than $2,000 previously. But in the days immediately following the split, AMZN stock fell to a fresh 52-week low of $101.26 a share, pushing the stock to its most affordable level in more than a decade.Down over 34% this year, Amazon’s stock is now trading at $109.65, only slightly above its low point over the past 12 months. This gives investors an opportunity to own a piece of the world’s biggest e-commerce company on the cheap and benefit hugely when the stock inevitably recovers and rises again.Like virtually every company on this list, Amazon is struggling with issues that include wage inflation, supply chain snarls, and rising interest rates that are slowing consumer spending. But none of these problems is unique to Amazon and they will pass eventually. And coming out of the pandemic, Amazon is proving to be a stronger and more diversified company. Consider thate-commerce salesare forecast to exceed more than $1 trillion in the U.S. this year, and that Amazon controls 40% of the market.The company also continues to benefit from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing unit, which last year represented more than 70% of its operating income. Amazon currently holds a 33% share of the global cloud computing market, and growing.DisneyShares of the world’s biggest entertainment company are currently changing hands at $94.34 a share. The last time Disney stock was that low was immediately after theWorld Health Organization(WHO) declared Covid-19 a global pandemic and markets around the world crashed.Prior to that, you have to go back to early 2015 to find the last time shares of the Mouse House traded around $95. Disney stock is currentlydown 40% on the year, and 50% below its 52-week high of $187.58. The selloff has been partly due to broader market volatility and partly due to concerns that subscriber growth is slowing on the Disney+ streaming platform.However, the naysayers are neglecting to factor in the strong box office performances from several theatrically released Disney films in recent months. Pixar animated movieLightyearjust debuted in thenumber one spotat the global box office with a weekend haul of $85.6 million. That follows the$942.48 million total earnedby Marvel’sDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.Other highly anticipated movies are on their way to the big screen in coming months, includingThor: Love and ThunderandPinocchio. Plus, this summer marks the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began that all Disney theme parks will be fully open with no capacity restrictions. Add in the company’s cruise ships and branded merchandise, and it’s easy to see that Disney is more than a streaming platform.FedExShares of shipping and logistics giant FedEx recently got a big boost after the company announced that it isboosting its quarterly dividend by 53%. That news immediately sent FDX stock up 14%, its biggest one-day gain since 1986. Yet despite the jump higher, Federal Express’ stock remains down 12% on the year at $227.43 a share.The company’s stock has been in investor jail since management warned that shipments are slowing coming out of the pandemic. But shareholders shouldn’t be overly concerned. Especially ones who can afford to be patient with the stock.The company is clearly making shareholders a priority. In addition to the massive dividend increase, which takes the quarterly payout to $1.15 a share, FedEx also announced that it is adding “total shareholder return” as a performance metric to its executive compensation program. This is on top of the$5 billion share repurchase programthe company announced last December.The renewed focus on shareholder returns comes as FedEx founder Fred Smithtransitions to the role of executive chairmanand is replaced as chief executive officer (CEO) by Raj Subramaniam. The leadership transition, coupled with the depressed price of FDX stock, presents a nice entry point for investors.Berkshire HathawayGiven the outsized influence Warren Buffett continues to exert on markets and investors, it is fitting to include his holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, on this list. Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B stock is down 10% year to date at $268.55 per share. That’s better than the 23% decline in the benchmark S&P 500 index. However, BRK.B stock is now25% below its 52-week highof $362.10 and only slightly above its 52-week low of $265.68 a share. This presents a great entry point for investors and an opportunity to own shares of one of the most successful companies in U.S. history.A holding company, Berkshire Hathaway owns many companies outright, ranging from railroads and insurers to the Dairy Queen fast food restaurant chain and Fruit of the Loom underwear maker.Berkshire also owns avast portfolio of stocksthat includes many of the names on this list, such as Apple, American Express and Amazon. The company’s portfolio currently totals more than $300 billion and that is with this year’s market decline. However, Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio has consistently beaten the results of the S&P 500. At the time of writing this article, Credit Suisse and Berenberg have price targets of $1025 and $900 respectively, while JPMorgan and Barclays both have price targets of $325. There is a huge difference in how people and institutions value this stock; much more so compared to other company stocks. In this article, I take a deeper dive into Tesla&#39;s business model and future prospects, after which I will be concluding with my personal valuation analysis for Tesla stock.</p><h2>Why Tesla can be a front-runner in the future</h2><p>The company itself is on a very optimistic trajectory, and could expand at an impressive rate in the near future. We must also consider the rapid expansion of the EV market in general.</p><h3>Explosive growth in financials</h3><p>Tesla has shown explosive growth in multiple areas. Its first-quarter earnings results, which were reported this month, showed an 87% YoY increase in automotive revenue ($16.9B) and a 68% surge in deliveries (310048). In addition, its net cash flow from operating activities saw an increase of over 143%, and it currently stands at just under $4B. It is no question that the company is on an upward trajectory in terms of its growth. The statistics reflect that the company is producing and selling more vehicles at an alarming pace. Its operating cash flows are also increasing massively, which indicates that the company&#39;s core business activities (in this case, the manufacturing of electric vehicles) are doing extremely well.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08130a3ae96a853b5227a128fe52208e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Tesla&#39;s quarterly vehicle sales growth (2012-2021) (CleanTechnica, Tesla)</p><p>We can see from the chart above that the growth in vehicle sales over the past few years has been on a strong and consistent upward trajectory. There is no doubt that the company&#39;s growth rates in revenue and deliveries indicate that it will remain a huge player in the vehicle industry. Another good point to make is that the company&#39;s free cash flow has been up tremendously - the company has turned a negative free cash flow of ($221.71m) in 2018 to a whopping $4.98b in 2021. This is due to the substantial increase in operating cash flows over the years. An article on NASDAQ has suggested that based on analyst estimates of future sales and free cash flow margins, we could see free cash flow reach $17.86b by the end of 2023 - that&#39;s over three times of what it did last year.</p><h3>Self-developed chips</h3><p>One extremely impressive quality of Tesla is that the company develops its own chips. It is known that Tesla writes its own software through the company&#39;s competent engineers, and hence, does not need to source its chips from external suppliers. This gives the company a huge competitive edge over its counterparts. An article from CBS News stated clearly that despite the global chip shortage, Tesla reported record Q4 and FY2022 earnings due to a huge rise in deliveries. Tesla&#39;s self-sufficiency in this area is a good reason to believe in the company, especially in the long run where chip shortages may get worse. In comparison, many Chinese EV makers and well-known vehicle companies like General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) have been hit hard by the chip shortage due to their over-reliance on global chip supply, with some of them having to close down their factories. Tesla&#39;s ability to create its own computer chip supply chain puts it in a significantly more advantageous position as compared to its competitors.</p><h2>Concerns about Tesla</h2><p>While the company has many merits, there are several factors which need to be considered before investing in Tesla stock.</p><h3>Vulnerable to supply chain constraints</h3><p>Although Tesla makes its own chips, we need to acknowledge that any EV company is still extremely vulnerable to supply chain issues, especially after the Russia-Ukraine crisis took the world by storm. According to a recent article by Barron&#39;s,</p><blockquote>A basket of metals that go into lithium-ion batteries was up about 40% year to date before Russia invaded Ukraine. It has risen another 13% since then as the war makes inflation worse.&#34;</blockquote><p>The drastic increase in price of such factor inputs means horrible news for the EV industry, especially for major players like Tesla. The same article also highlights a more serious problem about this supply chain - its over-reliance on China, which is responsible for the global production of about 80% of such inputs. Elon Musk himself has said that supply chain issues would be affecting output numbers to a significant extent in 2022. The company has even delayed two vehicle releases (namely the Cybertruck and the Roadster) as a result of such constraints. As such, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> cannot underestimate supply chain concerns which arise for EV companies, and it is evident that Tesla has been affected by these issues. The most recent report about Tesla&#39;s sales in April this year is further justification that the supply chain issue cannot be neglected. Whether the company navigates these roadblocks remain something to be proven, and persistence of such issues could lead to a bump in the current exponential growth that the company is experiencing, possibly resulting in lower forecasted sales, revenue, and free cash flows. These considerations will be made in the valuation section of this article.</p><h3>Financial ratios and metrics</h3><p>While Tesla boasts explosive growth numbers, there are a few metrics and ratios we may need to be concerned about.</p><h4>Price-to-earnings in comparison to competitors</h4><p>According to a report by Barron&#39;s, Ford and General Motors beat Tesla significantly (in sales) in the fourth quarter of 2021, having sales of $37.7 billion and $33.5 billion respectively, compared to Tesla&#39;s $25 billion. Yet, we see that Ford and General Motors are currently trading at lesser than 10 times earnings. In comparison, Tesla trades at about 90 times earnings. However, analysts do expect the P/E ratio to be 46.86 in 2024, which is much more reasonable. Some may also argue that Tesla has an edge over normal car companies for the fact that they have their own software architecture, and should hence be valued at a higher multiple.</p><h4>Share dilution</h4><p>Tesla has been consistently issuing shares over the past few years - The company has gone from 852.63m diluted shares outstanding in 2018 to 1.13b diluted shares outstanding in 2021, reflecting a net overall change of 32.5%. There also seems to be no sign of a share buyback, even after a Tesla investor famously demanded for one and got featured on CNBC. The rationale behind this was sound - the stock price has tanked a lot relative to its all-time high. It was even flirting with the low $600s not long ago, yet we have yet to see any action on the company&#39;s part. The constant issuing of shares dilutes investors by reducing their stake in the company.</p><h3>Competition from China</h3><p>The EV industry is highly competitive, especially in China. In particular, NIO (NIO), Li Auto (LI), XPeng (XPEV), and BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY) have taken the EV market by storm and are all growing at exponential rates.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/407ff92f946818922b3568665d0b216c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"422\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Sales in the Chinese premium EV market (EqualOcean)</p><p>We can see from the chart above that Tesla is attempting to break into the Chinese market, with a good amount of growth in sales in this particular area. Understandably, with China&#39;s growing middle class and rising demand, it is indeed a lucrative decision to get a share of this pie. However, we cannot overlook the strong competition presented by the other Chinese EV giants. We can see that BYD leads the race in sales, with Tesla as a close second. However, NIO, Li Auto, and XPeng are also on a strong upward trajectory. We need to take into account that these three up-and-coming companies have huge room to grow in market share and sales compared to Tesla, and their performance in terms of deliveries and financials over the past few years have been impressive.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d575e31edd67a64988eb43fc01ee0c20\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"388\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NIO&#39;s quarterly deliveries (CNEVPOST)</p><p>Let&#39;s take a look at NIO and their quarterly deliveries. We can see that year-over-year deliveries are up tremendously, which is a good indicator of the growth potential of an EV company. In addition, NIO still has much room for growth if it continues producing high-quality electric cars and expanding into different markets. To put things into perspective, Tesla&#39;s market capitalization is about 27 times more than NIO&#39;s - yes, it&#39;s that much bigger. The point is that Tesla is not the only player in the market, though it is undoubtedly one of the biggest, and most well-known. The company faces strong competition from its Chinese counterparts, and their exponential growth could seriously threaten Tesla&#39;s future profitability. Tesla has yet to show that the ability to capture majority of the Chinese market, despite it being one of the biggest EV names in the world.</p><h2>Valuation analysis</h2><p>I will be using a discounted cash flow model, with a weighted average cost of capital of 8.8%, to estimate the intrinsic value of Tesla&#39;s stock price. I will also introduce three scenarios: Bear, Base, and Bull.</p><h3>Financials and forecasts</h3><p>Before we go into the analyses, let&#39;s analyze a few metrics. Firstly, let&#39;s look at Tesla&#39;s free cash flows. The company&#39;s free cash flow growth numbers in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 were 94.65%, 538.85%, 178.62%, and 83.81% respectively. Next, let&#39;s observe Tesla&#39;s diluted shares outstanding. The company has gone from 852.63m diluted shares outstanding in 2018 to 1.13b diluted shares outstanding in 2021, reflecting a net overall change of 32.5%. This is an approximate average 10% increase in diluted shares outstanding every year. Note that the analyst consensus is for Tesla to reach free cash flow numbers of $17.86 billion in 2023, as stated earlier in this article.</p><h4>Bear case</h4><p>For our Bear case, I&#39;ve used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.5%, a 55% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 10% annual growth in shares outstanding. This growth rate leads to an approximate $12b in free cash flows in 2023, which is significantly lower than analyst estimates. I&#39;ve set these conditions based on a bearish scenario where Tesla would continue encountering the supply chain issues I&#39;ve mentioned, which would significantly slow down deliveries. In addition, big Chinese EV names could seriously rival Tesla in the Chinese market. As such, I&#39;ve gone below analyst estimates (by quite a bit), and expect a much slower but consistent growth in sales, operating cash flow, and free cash flow. As for the shares outstanding, I&#39;ve decided to assume that it will grow similar to its average growth rate in recent history.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe01643d4f8bd01fe14f64141392c6ab\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"194\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Bear) (Prepared by author)</p><p></p><p>We&#39;ve come to a price target of about $335.30, putting this estimate on par with the price targets issued by JPMorgan and Barclays, which are both $325.</p><h4>Base case</h4><p>For our Base case, I&#39;ve used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.6%, a 65% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 10% annual growth in shares outstanding. This is my personal projection of the company. These metrics would still lead to a significantly lower free cash flow in 2023 compared to analyst estimates (about $13.56b compared to a forecasted $17.86b). I&#39;ve gone lower because I expect the supply chain issue to persist over the next few years. While Tesla is able to make its own chips, I&#39;ve yet to be convinced that it is able to smoothly overcome the other supply shortages plaguing the market, especially after its April deliveries. Yet, I do believe that it would see decent growth in sales, operating cash flows, and free cash flow, and there is a good chance that it will maintain its competitiveness in China. As for the shares outstanding, I&#39;ve decided to assume that it will grow similar to its average growth rate in recent history.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5f26136fd86fb52e15bceb7ae3fcfb77\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"177\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Base) (Prepared by author)</p><p></p><p>We&#39;ve come to a price target of about $470.90. I consider this estimate to still be on the conservative side, but it&#39;s definitely significantly more optimistic than the Bear case.</p><h4>Bull case</h4><p>For our Bull case, I&#39;ve used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.6%, an 80% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 3% annual growth in shares outstanding. This would lead to $16.14b in free cash flow in 2023, which is much closer to the analyst estimate of $17.86b. This case assumes that Tesla is able to perfectly continue on its upward trajectory, and is also able to withstand the Chinese competition and maintain or increase its share in the Chinese EV market. However, it&#39;s important to note that I have still gone slightly lower than analyst estimates, factoring in the supply chain issues that the company is currently facing. However, this case assumes that this issue is a short-term one that the company will be able to resolve through other methods of sourcing, a change in global supply chains or its own innovation. I&#39;ve gone on to assume that the company, having earned a tremendous amount of free cash flow, would either issue lesser shares or use it to buy back shares to benefit Tesla investors. As such, I believe that the company would issue shares at a slower rate.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a78487a262914029aee632fd2df1562\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"177\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Bull) (Prepared by author)</p><p>We&#39;ve come to a price target of about $1016.80, putting this estimate on par with the price target issued by Credit Suisse, which is $1025.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>I&#39;ve taken the average of the above three cases to arrive at a price target of $607.66, similar to Cowen&#39;s price target of $660. This is lower than the current price at which Tesla is trading at, though the price was near this level not too long ago. I believe that this company can be described as a wild card - it could bring huge returns if things go to plan, but if they don&#39;t, it could be ridiculously overvalued. It&#39;s imperative that you do further due diligence and invest with caution, as there&#39;s huge uncertainty when it comes to such companies. There is a huge difference in how people and institutions value this stock; much more so compared to other company stocks. In this article, I take a deeper dive into Tesla's business model and future prospects, after which I will be concluding with my personal valuation analysis for Tesla stock.Why Tesla can be a front-runner in the futureThe company itself is on a very optimistic trajectory, and could expand at an impressive rate in the near future. We must also consider the rapid expansion of the EV market in general.Explosive growth in financialsTesla has shown explosive growth in multiple areas. Its first-quarter earnings results, which were reported this month, showed an 87% YoY increase in automotive revenue ($16.9B) and a 68% surge in deliveries (310048). In addition, its net cash flow from operating activities saw an increase of over 143%, and it currently stands at just under $4B. It is no question that the company is on an upward trajectory in terms of its growth. The statistics reflect that the company is producing and selling more vehicles at an alarming pace. Its operating cash flows are also increasing massively, which indicates that the company's core business activities (in this case, the manufacturing of electric vehicles) are doing extremely well.Tesla's quarterly vehicle sales growth (2012-2021) (CleanTechnica, Tesla)We can see from the chart above that the growth in vehicle sales over the past few years has been on a strong and consistent upward trajectory. There is no doubt that the company's growth rates in revenue and deliveries indicate that it will remain a huge player in the vehicle industry. Another good point to make is that the company's free cash flow has been up tremendously - the company has turned a negative free cash flow of ($221.71m) in 2018 to a whopping $4.98b in 2021. This is due to the substantial increase in operating cash flows over the years. An article on NASDAQ has suggested that based on analyst estimates of future sales and free cash flow margins, we could see free cash flow reach $17.86b by the end of 2023 - that's over three times of what it did last year.Self-developed chipsOne extremely impressive quality of Tesla is that the company develops its own chips. It is known that Tesla writes its own software through the company's competent engineers, and hence, does not need to source its chips from external suppliers. This gives the company a huge competitive edge over its counterparts. An article from CBS News stated clearly that despite the global chip shortage, Tesla reported record Q4 and FY2022 earnings due to a huge rise in deliveries. Tesla's self-sufficiency in this area is a good reason to believe in the company, especially in the long run where chip shortages may get worse. In comparison, many Chinese EV makers and well-known vehicle companies like General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) have been hit hard by the chip shortage due to their over-reliance on global chip supply, with some of them having to close down their factories. Tesla's ability to create its own computer chip supply chain puts it in a significantly more advantageous position as compared to its competitors.Concerns about TeslaWhile the company has many merits, there are several factors which need to be considered before investing in Tesla stock.Vulnerable to supply chain constraintsAlthough Tesla makes its own chips, we need to acknowledge that any EV company is still extremely vulnerable to supply chain issues, especially after the Russia-Ukraine crisis took the world by storm. According to a recent article by Barron's,A basket of metals that go into lithium-ion batteries was up about 40% year to date before Russia invaded Ukraine. It has risen another 13% since then as the war makes inflation worse.\"The drastic increase in price of such factor inputs means horrible news for the EV industry, especially for major players like Tesla. The same article also highlights a more serious problem about this supply chain - its over-reliance on China, which is responsible for the global production of about 80% of such inputs. Elon Musk himself has said that supply chain issues would be affecting output numbers to a significant extent in 2022. The company has even delayed two vehicle releases (namely the Cybertruck and the Roadster) as a result of such constraints. As such, one cannot underestimate supply chain concerns which arise for EV companies, and it is evident that Tesla has been affected by these issues. The most recent report about Tesla's sales in April this year is further justification that the supply chain issue cannot be neglected. Whether the company navigates these roadblocks remain something to be proven, and persistence of such issues could lead to a bump in the current exponential growth that the company is experiencing, possibly resulting in lower forecasted sales, revenue, and free cash flows. These considerations will be made in the valuation section of this article.Financial ratios and metricsWhile Tesla boasts explosive growth numbers, there are a few metrics and ratios we may need to be concerned about.Price-to-earnings in comparison to competitorsAccording to a report by Barron's, Ford and General Motors beat Tesla significantly (in sales) in the fourth quarter of 2021, having sales of $37.7 billion and $33.5 billion respectively, compared to Tesla's $25 billion. Yet, we see that Ford and General Motors are currently trading at lesser than 10 times earnings. In comparison, Tesla trades at about 90 times earnings. However, analysts do expect the P/E ratio to be 46.86 in 2024, which is much more reasonable. Some may also argue that Tesla has an edge over normal car companies for the fact that they have their own software architecture, and should hence be valued at a higher multiple.Share dilutionTesla has been consistently issuing shares over the past few years - The company has gone from 852.63m diluted shares outstanding in 2018 to 1.13b diluted shares outstanding in 2021, reflecting a net overall change of 32.5%. There also seems to be no sign of a share buyback, even after a Tesla investor famously demanded for one and got featured on CNBC. The rationale behind this was sound - the stock price has tanked a lot relative to its all-time high. It was even flirting with the low $600s not long ago, yet we have yet to see any action on the company's part. The constant issuing of shares dilutes investors by reducing their stake in the company.Competition from ChinaThe EV industry is highly competitive, especially in China. In particular, NIO (NIO), Li Auto (LI), XPeng (XPEV), and BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY) have taken the EV market by storm and are all growing at exponential rates.Sales in the Chinese premium EV market (EqualOcean)We can see from the chart above that Tesla is attempting to break into the Chinese market, with a good amount of growth in sales in this particular area. Understandably, with China's growing middle class and rising demand, it is indeed a lucrative decision to get a share of this pie. However, we cannot overlook the strong competition presented by the other Chinese EV giants. We can see that BYD leads the race in sales, with Tesla as a close second. However, NIO, Li Auto, and XPeng are also on a strong upward trajectory. We need to take into account that these three up-and-coming companies have huge room to grow in market share and sales compared to Tesla, and their performance in terms of deliveries and financials over the past few years have been impressive.NIO's quarterly deliveries (CNEVPOST)Let's take a look at NIO and their quarterly deliveries. We can see that year-over-year deliveries are up tremendously, which is a good indicator of the growth potential of an EV company. In addition, NIO still has much room for growth if it continues producing high-quality electric cars and expanding into different markets. To put things into perspective, Tesla's market capitalization is about 27 times more than NIO's - yes, it's that much bigger. The point is that Tesla is not the only player in the market, though it is undoubtedly one of the biggest, and most well-known. The company faces strong competition from its Chinese counterparts, and their exponential growth could seriously threaten Tesla's future profitability. Tesla has yet to show that the ability to capture majority of the Chinese market, despite it being one of the biggest EV names in the world.Valuation analysisI will be using a discounted cash flow model, with a weighted average cost of capital of 8.8%, to estimate the intrinsic value of Tesla's stock price. I will also introduce three scenarios: Bear, Base, and Bull.Financials and forecastsBefore we go into the analyses, let's analyze a few metrics. Firstly, let's look at Tesla's free cash flows. The company's free cash flow growth numbers in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 were 94.65%, 538.85%, 178.62%, and 83.81% respectively. Next, let's observe Tesla's diluted shares outstanding. The company has gone from 852.63m diluted shares outstanding in 2018 to 1.13b diluted shares outstanding in 2021, reflecting a net overall change of 32.5%. This is an approximate average 10% increase in diluted shares outstanding every year. Note that the analyst consensus is for Tesla to reach free cash flow numbers of $17.86 billion in 2023, as stated earlier in this article.Bear caseFor our Bear case, I've used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.5%, a 55% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 10% annual growth in shares outstanding. This growth rate leads to an approximate $12b in free cash flows in 2023, which is significantly lower than analyst estimates. I've set these conditions based on a bearish scenario where Tesla would continue encountering the supply chain issues I've mentioned, which would significantly slow down deliveries. In addition, big Chinese EV names could seriously rival Tesla in the Chinese market. As such, I've gone below analyst estimates (by quite a bit), and expect a much slower but consistent growth in sales, operating cash flow, and free cash flow. As for the shares outstanding, I've decided to assume that it will grow similar to its average growth rate in recent history.Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Bear) (Prepared by author)We've come to a price target of about $335.30, putting this estimate on par with the price targets issued by JPMorgan and Barclays, which are both $325.Base caseFor our Base case, I've used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.6%, a 65% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 10% annual growth in shares outstanding. This is my personal projection of the company. These metrics would still lead to a significantly lower free cash flow in 2023 compared to analyst estimates (about $13.56b compared to a forecasted $17.86b). I've gone lower because I expect the supply chain issue to persist over the next few years. While Tesla is able to make its own chips, I've yet to be convinced that it is able to smoothly overcome the other supply shortages plaguing the market, especially after its April deliveries. Yet, I do believe that it would see decent growth in sales, operating cash flows, and free cash flow, and there is a good chance that it will maintain its competitiveness in China. As for the shares outstanding, I've decided to assume that it will grow similar to its average growth rate in recent history.Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Base) (Prepared by author)We've come to a price target of about $470.90. I consider this estimate to still be on the conservative side, but it's definitely significantly more optimistic than the Bear case.Bull caseFor our Bull case, I've used a perpetuity growth rate of 3.6%, an 80% average annual growth in free cash flow and a 3% annual growth in shares outstanding. This would lead to $16.14b in free cash flow in 2023, which is much closer to the analyst estimate of $17.86b. This case assumes that Tesla is able to perfectly continue on its upward trajectory, and is also able to withstand the Chinese competition and maintain or increase its share in the Chinese EV market. However, it's important to note that I have still gone slightly lower than analyst estimates, factoring in the supply chain issues that the company is currently facing. However, this case assumes that this issue is a short-term one that the company will be able to resolve through other methods of sourcing, a change in global supply chains or its own innovation. I've gone on to assume that the company, having earned a tremendous amount of free cash flow, would either issue lesser shares or use it to buy back shares to benefit Tesla investors. As such, I believe that the company would issue shares at a slower rate.Discounted Cash Flow Model for Tesla (Bull) (Prepared by author)We've come to a price target of about $1016.80, putting this estimate on par with the price target issued by Credit Suisse, which is $1025.ConclusionI've taken the average of the above three cases to arrive at a price target of $607.66, similar to Cowen's price target of $660. This is lower than the current price at which Tesla is trading at, though the price was near this level not too long ago. I believe that this company can be described as a wild card - it could bring huge returns if things go to plan, but if they don't, it could be ridiculously overvalued. It's imperative that you do further due diligence and invest with caution, as there's huge uncertainty when it comes to such companies. But, we have not observed such early warning in Nvidia&#39;s commentary. Therefore, execution is very poor.</li><li>We reiterate our Hold rating, as we believe NVDA could continue underperforming the market.</li></ul><p><b>Thesis</b></p><p>NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) stunned the market as it announced its Q2 preliminary results that came in well below its guidance and the Street&#39;s consensus. We highlighted in our previous article that NVIDIA could continue to underperform the market, even though we assessed that it was near its bottom.</p><p>While we expected NVDA to stage a short-term rally from its June lows, we didn&#39;t envisage NVDA to continue outperforming the market. Notably, NVDA has underperformed the Invesco QQQ ETF (QQQ) and the Technology ETF (XLK) over the past two months (even before yesterday&#39;s sell-off).</p><p>We maintain our conviction that the market has materially de-rated NVDA, despite its battering from its November 2021 highs. Management has failed to convince us when chips are down that Nvidia could overcome the market&#39;s cyclical nature with its so-called &#34;secular&#34; opportunities.</p><p>Coupled with potentially slowing revenue growth and its steep growth premium, we urge investors to find other well-beaten down opportunities in growth and tech stocks to add exposure. Notwithstanding, we expect semis to have bottomed out and do not expect much further downside in NVDA. As a result, we urge investors not to sell in panic.</p><p>Therefore, we reiterate our Hold rating on NVDA for now.</p><p><b>Nvidia Lost Credibility With Its Caution</b></p><p>We are shareholders of NVDA, which account for a reasonable weighting in our portfolio. Therefore, we consider the warning on its Q2 prelim release a massive disappointment but not unexpected.</p><p>We vividly remember Broadcom (AVGO)CEO Hock Tan cautioned about the current semi downturn in September 2021, demonstrating his prescience and credibility. We also highlighted his comments in our article last year, as he accentuated:</p><blockquote>And to answer your question point-blank, I do not see any specific drivers or reasons why the strength we see today is really nothing more than of an exaggerated up-cycle. We always go through a period of digestion. There&#39;s no way we can consume on all that forever. And that&#39;s what is called a cycle, particularly when we expect supply to come into play out of this - out of the current tightness, but dated back to 2020 to start coming in 2023. And the massive investment and CapEx will start deploying capacity in &#39;23 earliest. Then I see &#39;23 where we have supply. And I think digestion of demand might just start to occur. (Broadcom article)</blockquote><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/66ac20e2b8ed62af8f2aeaa78f94ad5e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Nvidia gaming and data center revenue change %(Company filings)</p><p>Nvidia warned in its preliminary release for FQ2&#39;23that it expects to post revenue of $6.7B, up by just 3% YoY, down significantly from its previous outlook of $8.1B (up 24.4%).</p><p>The main culprit is gaming, as Nvidia highlighted that it expects gaming to post a decline of 33.4%, as seen above, even though data center growth remains robust. However, Nvidia&#39;s gaming growth has already trended down consistently from its peak growth in FQ1&#39;22, as gaming started to lap challenging comps, complicated by the post-pandemic reopening.</p><p>Furthermore, the destruction in crypto mining added to the headwinds in gaming cards ASPs, creating further challenges for Nvidia as it prepares to launch its RTX 40-series Ada Lovelace graphics.</p><p>But, Nvidia has consistently maintained its &#34;strong&#34; belief in its gaming segment, often accentuating its strength and consistency.
