It's pretty difficult to imagine that there could be one firm, some outfit called Archegos, that you most likely never heard of, that could bring down all of these stocks and more with a margin call. That's right, one hedge fund was allowed to borrow so much money from so many different firms that, apparently, when one of its position broke badly, the stock of ViacomCBS, many of its big positions came tumbling down.</p>\n<p>That sure does seem rigged as does the fallout to the firms that allowed Archegos to borrow money. After all what bank would let one hedge fund borrow so much money that it couldn't pay back its margin loans, let alone a whole bunch of big banks that sold the collateral quickly to limit the hurt to their own bottom lines.</p>\n<p>In reality it's not rigged although the banks and the hedge fund obviously had a problem with risk controls. It's likely, also, that each independent bank didn't know the extent of the losses Archegos may have had so they had to act quickly to try to salvage whatever they could before the losses deepened even more. Witness today's further debacle with ViacomCBS.</p>\n<p>But let's go back to that first assumption, that it was rigged \"all along.\" What happened with Archegos is, in many ways, a microcosm of what happened to many growth stocks that were incredibly expensive at the highs. A lot of them were owned by younger investors who borrowed money to play the hot stocks, stocks like Unity U and DoorDash (DASH) and Twilio (TWLO) or Zoom (ZM) , stocks of great companies that got crushed by the rotation of larger Wall Street funds, that took their profits and went elsewhere. Many people had come to believe that the younger investors were having such a big impact on the market that they could move stocks. It looks like they did, but perhaps with borrowed money, like Archegos, or even with risky options, call positions that were wiped out by the sudden decline in prices.</p>\n<p>Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the stock of GameStop (GME) is pretty much the mirror image of Archegos. How did the stock of the so-so video game accoutrement retailer get to $400? When a hedge fund that had been betting that GameStop would fall couldn't put up enough collateral so the brokerage firms brought the hedge fund in, basically closing out its position for the hedge fund, and perhaps others, who had been betting against the stock.</p>\n<p>Once they were out of the picture GameStop suffered its swift fall from unsustainable heights. There are still plenty of people who think that GameStop's stock belongs in the $400s, just like there are people who believe the great growth stocks that traded at unsustainable heights should return someday to those levels.</p>\n<p>But that might not happen for years and years or at all.</p>\n<p>Here's why this all matters. If you think the game is rigged you are most likely going to put your statements in a drawer and just say \"the heck with it, I will look at it when these stocks come back.\"</p>\n<p>That's a loser's point of view, though. It's the one that many younger investors adopted in 2000 and 2001. Fortunately, a lot of these companies are much better than those back then, although the plethora of SPACs are beginning to challenge that assumption.</p>\n<p>I don't want you to do that. I want you to stay focused, look for opportunity, understand that the business isn't rigged, it just, at many times lacks effective self-policing or policing by the government.</p>\n<p>But I think this Archegos event will hasten what I most feared inthe five stages of grief, the last one, acceptance. Lots of young people are accepting their lot and leaving. That's never good. You must always pay attention to your positions. Positions forgotten are positions that rarely come back.</p>\n<p>I can't change your mind about the rigging as an explanation for the paper losses you may have experience. If I couldn't do it back then -- and I failed -- I will fail now. I just urge you to keep a level head and understand the Great Reopening busted so many pure growth stocks, and recognize it wasn't some vast conspiracy against you. It was just a reminder of how hard it really is to make money and how vital it is to listen when I say take something off the table. I wasn't trying to hurt you. I was just trying to warn you. And I sense that I failed in doing so. Is it too late? No, these stocks will have their spikes up. But then you have to sell something, even if it is at a loss. It still held below last week’s one-year high of 1.614%.</p><p>Some investors had expected the Fed might step up purchases of long-term bonds, helping push down long-term interest rates.</p><p>“The market has been worried about the rise in long-term interest rates and the Fed chairman in his commentary didn’t really push back towards this increase in rates and the market took it as a signal that yields could rise further, which is what has happened,” said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James in Florida.</p><p>GRAPHIC-Nasdaq tumbles 10% from February record high -</p><p>In a day of heavy trading on Wall Street, the Nasdaq wiped out all of its year-to-date gains and ended down 9.7% from its record closing high on Feb. 12. The S&amp;P 500 has declined over 4% from its record high close on Feb. 12.</p><p>Data showed the number of Americans filing for jobless benefits rose last week, likely boosted by brutal winter storms in the densely populated South, though the labor market outlook is improving amid declining new COVID-19 cases.</p><p>The crucial monthly payrolls report is expected on Friday.</p><p>Wall Street has been under pressure in recent sessions as a spike in U.S. bond yields hurt valuations of high-flying tech stocks. Stocks expected to thrive as the economy reopens outperformed in recent weeks due to expectations of a new round of fiscal aid and vaccinations.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 energy sector index jumped 2.5% and reached a one-year high on the back of higher oil prices.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.11% to end at 30,924.14 points, while the S&amp;P 500 lost 1.34% to 3,768.47.</p><p>The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.11% to 12,723.47.</p><p>Volume on U.S. exchanges was 18 billion shares, compared with the 15 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.</p><p>Apple Inc, Tesla Inc and PayPal Holdings Inc were among the largest drags on the S&amp;P 500. Tesla dropped almost 5%.</p><p>Tech stocks are particularly sensitive to rising yields because their value rests heavily on future earnings, which are discounted more deeply when bond returns go up.</p><p>“Valuations are at the high end of historic ranges, so you are seeing selling, especially in the higher valuation areas like the Nasdaq and tech general,” said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment strategist at Inverness Counsel in New York.</p><p>Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 3.79-to-1 ratio; Lisa Ellis of MoffettNathanson raised her price target on the stock to $350, reflecting a variety of sources of growth.</p>\n<p>Just about every facet of the business may bepoisedto double over the next five years. PayPal expects to have 750 million active accounts by 2025, up from 377 million now. It sees total payments volume expanding at a 25% annualized rate, reaching $2.8 trillion by 2025.&nbsp; Revenues are expected to hit more than $50 billion, up from an estimated $25.6 billion this year.</p>\n<p>PayPal also expects to boost adjusted operating margins from 25% to 28%, and sees earnings per share rising an average 22% a year. It’s planning to generate $40 billion in free cash flow over the next five years, targeting 30% to 40% for share repurchases.</p>\n<p>As Ellis points out, PayPal has several stepping stones to hit those targets. One is a new service called Buy Now Pay Later, an interest-free installment plan for consumer purchases. The service is gaining traction, with $750 million of transaction volume in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>Anothergrowth driveris cryptocurrencies. PayPal users can now buy and store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on its app. The company aims to allow crypto to be used as a funding source with the 28 million merchants on its platform, acting as a middleman between consumers and businesses. Bitcoinhit a record$50,000 on Tuesday, up 75% this year, and it appears to be driving greater usage of PayPal, which could ultimately lead to higher average revenue per customer.</p>\n<p>PayPal also aims to use its Venmo P2P service as a platform for consumer-to-business payments. And PayPal is making inroads with brick-and-mortar merchants through QR technology for contactless payments in stores.</p>\n<p>Does all of this warrant a higher market value and a steep premium to Mastercard stock? The card network is actually expected to lift revenue and profits at a faster pace in fiscal 2021, according to Ellis, growing revenue 21.7% versus 19% for PayPal. She also sees Mastercard’s earnings per share rising 33.3% versus 17.5% for PayPal’s.</p>\n<p>But the five-year outlook is clearly more favorable for PayPal, with revenue rising 21% a year, compared with 15% for Mastercard, and earnings compounding at a 22% rate, versus 17% for Mastercard.</p>\n<p>The question is whether PayPal’s valuation is getting too rich. At 67 times estimated 2021 per-share earnings, PayPal stock is trading nearly three times more expensive than the S&amp;P 500’s P/E ratio of 23 times earnings. Mastercard goes for 42 times 2021 earnings.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Wall Street can’t seem to catch up with PayPal’s fast-rising stock.
