As of Dec. 30, the stock had gained 34% in 2021. This put the market cap at more than $2.9 trillion.While many recent headlines about the company have focused on its market capitalization approaching $3 trillion, investors might be wise to consider an even more bullish target: $4 trillion. Indeed, a close look at the stock suggests that a $4 trillion market cap could be within reach for the tech company in the near future -- possibly even within 2022.Image source: Getty Images.The path to $4 trillionA close look at Apple stock's conservative valuation and the company's broad-based momentum makes a good case for shares being undervalued today, setting the stage for a potential $4 trillion market capitalization in 2022.The first way Apple stock could gain is simply through expansion in its valuation multiple. Some megacap stocks trade at substantially higher multiples relative to their free cash flow (FCF) than Apple does. If Apple can close the gap and command a similar premium, multiple expansion alone could help the stock rise substantially.Consider that Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) trades at 42 times its free cash flow. Apple, meanwhile, trades at only 31 times its FCF. Apple's stock price would have to rise 35% for its FCF valuation multiple to match Microsoft's. This alone would put the company's market capitalization at about $4 trillion.There is actually a good case for Apple stock's valuation to see multiple expansion in the coming years: The tech giant's services business, which is a more reliable revenue source than its products, is growing as a percentage of Apple's total business. With a more predictable and reliable revenue source (that appears to still have lots of upside) increasingly driving Apple's growth, investors may start rewarding the stock with higher valuation multiples. In fiscal 2021, Apple's services revenue was 19% of revenue, up from less than 18% of revenue two years ago and 15% three years ago.But even without this much multiple expansion, strong fundamentals could lift Apple shares meaningfully in 2022 and beyond. Consider that the company is seeing strong double-digit revenue growth recently, with record fiscal fourth-quarter revenue across every geographic and product segment. Specifically, Apple's fiscal fourth-quarter revenue came in at $83.4 billion, up from $64.7 billion in the year-ago quarter. But management estimates that revenue for the period would have been $6 billion higher if it weren't for supply constraints during the period.Suffice to say, Apple's business is firing on all cylinders. With momentum in every geographic and product segment, it wouldn't be surprising to see double-digit growth rates in the company's revenue and free cash flow in fiscal 2022, providing solid substance for more share gains.Expect a bumpy rideWhile it is possible that Apple's market capitalization swells to $4 trillion before the end of 2022, there are no guarantees in investing. Even if everything goes well for Apple as a business, the stock itself could do poorly in the near term. Sometimes, for one reason or another, stocks fall in and out of favor. I’m right there with you, Karl.</p>\n<p>Working-class millennials have been denied the chance to build generational wealth over the course of our professional careers. Many of us are risking what little we have left as a way of raging against a machine we feel is rigged against us. And we’re following in Marx’s footsteps.</p>\n<p>After a friend died in 1864, Marx received £820 in a bequest, his biographer&nbsp;recounts. That comes out to roughly $151,500 today after adjusting for inflation and applying current conversion rates. Marx used a portion of his inheritance to become a financial speculator, often engaging in the same sort of penny-stock bubble schemes that the notorious WallStreetBets sub-Reddit has been accused of engaging in this year. “[Stocks] are springing up like mushrooms this year,” Marx wrote in a letter to his uncle, bragging that he had already made £400 from speculation. He added that many of his investments were typically “forced up to quite an unreasonable level and then, for the most part, collapse.”</p>\n<p>Marx’s trading stories are difficult to substantiate, but millennials’ love of meme stocks is very real. I’ve already made more this year from trading meme stocks and cryptocurrency than I have as a professional writer. I’ve come to look at the meme stock boom as millennials’ chance to finally build wealth. But if not, we’re content with making the investors largely responsible for our financial woes feel a bit of the pain they’ve inflicted on us. Short-sellers are losing their shirts to the tune of$4.5 billion&nbsp;on meme stocks so far.</p>\n<p>As a 34-year-old American, almost every generational stereotype applies to me. HuffPost’s Michael Hobbessummed up&nbsp;millennials’ financial situation best in 2017: “My rent consumes nearly half my income, I haven’t had a steady job since Pluto was a planet and my savings are dwindling faster than the ice caps the baby boomers melted.”</p>\n<p>Perhaps because we’re the only American generation to live through two major recessions and two wars in our coming-up years, we’re the first generation to be financially worse off than our parents, despite being&nbsp;better educated&nbsp;on average. We paid for it, too. A year of college that cost $10,000 for boomers set millennials back more than $15,000 on average in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to&nbsp;Bloomberg. Millennials of color, particularly Black millennials, have it worse. They graduated with&nbsp;even more student debt&nbsp;than their white classmates, are&nbsp;far less likely&nbsp;to be hired in white-collar professions, and their households earn&nbsp;just 60%of what their white coworkers make.</p>\n<p>Millennials’ high-priced educations haven’t bought us much job security. A 2018 Gallup study&nbsp;called&nbsp;millennials the “job-hopping generation.” Maybe, but not by choice. A 2019University of Chicago study&nbsp;found millennials actually long for a stable career. It should come as little surprise, then, that a generation plagued with job insecurity and mounting debt is leading the“baby bust.”The birth rate is at its lowest in&nbsp;three decades. There may not be enough working-age Americans to care for the nation’s swelling senior population. Boomers effectively climbed the class ladder, then took a saw and cut off the rungs below them. (And they still ask us when we’ll give them grandchildren!)</p>\n<p>If all that doesn’t make meme stocks and cryptocurrency more appealing, at least it might help explain why some of us just don’t care any more about playing it safe. I’ll be the first to admit that investing in meme stocks isn’t a sustainable way to build wealth. A lot more of us will get hurt than get rich. But I’m not primarily investing to make money: I want the investors who crashed the economy and got bailed out in my senior year of college—thus&nbsp;torpedoing&nbsp;my career earning potential—to feel at least a little bit of the hardship they put my generation through. And given the&nbsp;predominantly millennial&nbsp;composition of /r/WallStreetBets, I know I’m not the only rage-driven investor.</p>\n<p>There’s plenty to be mad about. Like we saw with&nbsp;GameStop,workers organizing to make the stock market pay out in our favor results in strict blowback. After Redditors speculated GameStop shares through the roof in late January, mobile trading app Robinhood not only restricted trading, but even&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;sold investors’ GameStop shares without their consent. (Robinhooddeniesforced-selling occurred.) When it came to light that Robinhood had a&nbsp;financial relationship&nbsp;with firms that help route its customers’ orders, it made a lot of newbie investors like me even more jaded about the markets.</p>\n<p>In March, when New York City opened movie theaters, I decided to buy AMC shares on a lark for $7 apiece. As of early June, my investment has appreciated in value by more than 550%. That could evaporate, but I’m taking a lesson from GameStop. Its stock is still trading at more than $250 per share despite starting the year under $20. I plan on continuing to hold my AMC shares in hopes the value will increase even more. When it’s finally time, I’ll sell half and re-invest my profits in cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>When that happens, I’ll be far from the only millennial betting big on crypto. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April.&nbsp;The 10-year yield has&nbsp;dropped to 1.64%&nbsp;from 1.74% on March 31.</p>\n<p>Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.</p>\n<p>Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:</p>\n<p><b>“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?</b></p>\n<p>One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.</p>\n<p>Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.</p>\n<p>Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation:&nbsp; That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.</p>\n<p>“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”</p>\n<p><b>Taper Timeline</b></p>\n<p>Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.</p>\n<p>Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases&nbsp;late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.</p>\n<p>So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.</p>\n<p><b>Labor-Market Outlook</b></p>\n<p>One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.</p>\n<p>Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes:&nbsp; How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?</p>\n<p>Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.</p>\n<p>Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.</p>\n<p>“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”</p>\n<p>Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes:&nbsp; Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy.
