Starting on Thursday, central bank leaders from around the world will meet virtually to talk about monetary policy during a traditional&nbsp;event&nbsp;often referred to simply as “Jackson Hole”.</p>\n<p>Today, the Apple Maven discusses how the upcoming meeting of central bankers could impact Apple stock’s&nbsp;performance in the last few trading sessions of August.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fb09ec199963ac68c7742982748bf7a0\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"800\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in a screen display at NYSE.</span></p>\n<p><b>The interest rate risk</b></p>\n<p>There seems to be a consensus that Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell will do little to “rock the boat” this week. Easing off on monetary stimulus is widely expected to occur over the next several months, but few seem confident that Mr. Powell will announce a change in policy as early as August.</p>\n<p>Still, the risk that the Fed will start to scale back its asset purchases later this year is real. Analysts will probably dissect Jerome Powell’s keynote speech, on Friday, in search for clues on the exact timing. Comments perceived to be hawkish could send yields higher – the 10-year treasury rate is only 1.3%.</p>\n<p>If recent history can serve as a guide,climbing yields tend to be bad news&nbsp;for growth stocks. Below are the main reasons why this is the case, as previously discussed on this channel:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “First, monetary tightening is a negative for consumption, everything else held constant. Second, a higher discount rate makes Apple’s far-out financial results less valuable in present value terms.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>For instance, the 10-year rate shot up from around 1% to nearly 1.5% in February alone. Probably not a coincidence, AAPL sank 8% that same month, while the value-rich Dow index managed to reach higher.</p>\n<p><b>Brace for possible volatility</b></p>\n<p>Regardless of which way the stock market may head following the Jackson Hole symposium, volatility could rise as August comes to a close. This is the case because speculation, both on the bullish and bearish sides of the argument, tends to increase around important events like this.</p>\n<p>Volatility is both good and bad news for Apple stock. Market jitters can be uncomfortable for many investors, and some might be tempted to sell or trim their positions after a selloff. On the other hand, a possible pullback that is unrelated to the company’s fundamentals could open an opportunity to buy AAPL on weakness.</p>\n<p>This is precisely what happened in mid-June, following an important Federal Reserve meeting that the market perceived as hawkish. After all, if $1,200 was generally viewed by investors as a likely outcome for Tesla stock within the next 12 months, shares would be trading significantly higher today.</p>\n<p>The issue boils down to the stock's forward-looking valuation. With a price-to-earnings ratio of about 370 at the time of this writing, Tesla shares are largely priced for strong growth for years to come. Since the company's valuation is based largely on profits far into the future, slight variances in views for Tesla's future growth trajectory yield dramatically different assumptions about the stock's intrinsic value today.</p>\n<p>Investors, therefore, shouldn't be quick to buy Tesla stock just because one analyst has a high price target for shares. Still, Potter does notably have some good points about Tesla's strong business momentum. That includes its Garena digital entertainment platform that publishes video games and offers e-sports tie-ins, the Shopee e-commerce platform and SeaMoney digital financial services that include mobile payment services.</p>\n<p>Sea was a darling in 2020 as it rode the “stay at home trade” to great success. Revenue doubled year over year in 2020 to $4.4 billion, and the company’s momentum was the envy of Wall Street as Sea stock racked up roughly 640% gains on the calendar year.</p>\n<p>But the fundamentals shown by Sea in 2021 hint that the surge in share prices were justified. Consider that in its first-quarter report in May, revenue surged by about&nbsp;150%— while gross profit tripled year over year.</p>\n<p>With its next earnings report scheduled for mid-August, Sea stock could see another leg up as it continues to prove Amazon isn’t the only e-commerce name worth watching.</p>\n<p><b>Coupang</b></p>\n<p>While Sea has been a cult stock for a while in some circles, one Asian e-commerce stock that is still flying under the radar for many is Korea-based Coupang Inc..&nbsp;South Korea’s biggest e-commerce company began trading in March after an IPO that raised $4.6 billion, but since then shares have drifted lower — and other cult-like stocks have won all the attention.</p>\n<p>If you haven’t yet heard of Coupang, its model should be quite familiar. It sells various products including home goods, apparel, beauty products, sporting goods and electronics. It’s also looking beyond these tried-and-true categories to include a focus on fresh food and groceries, as well as services including travel and restaurant delivery.</p>\n<p>Though the fundamentals are light given its recent debut, the numbers we have do show this regional e-tailer is connecting in a big way in Korea. Namely, it saw net revenue growth of 74% in its first-quarter report in May, and gross profit up 70% year over year. Total customers grew 21%, and revenue per customer surged 44%.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, the total customer base in that quarter was just 16 million households — hardly Amazon-esque.
