Three not-yet-profitable electric vehicle makers fit the bill as speculative growth stocks. And shares of Rivian Automotive, Lucid Group, and Workhorse Group were all taking a hit early. As of closing, there was some relief for the stocks, but shares still traded lower as follows:Rivian down 5%Lucid down 3.1%Workhorse down 11.9%There was also news contributing to some of the day's drops.So whatWorkhorse announced today that it entered into an agreement with one of its senior secured note holders to eliminate its debt in exchange for an issuance of shares. That deal doesn't look appealing for existing shareholders, especially at the $4.75 share price that High Trail Capital will get as a basis. That's a discount to the $5.04 per share level where the stock closed yesterday.Image source: Rivian Automotive.Rivian also provided some news today. The electric vehicle start-up warned investors of added risks recently in a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. But last night Rivian said it produced 2,553 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022. The company added that it remains \"well positioned\" to hit the 25,000 vehicle production level guidance it recently provided to investors. That was a reduced volume to what many expected before its March 10 projection, however, as the company struggles with supply chain and other issues.Now whatMany automotive companies mirrored what Rivian had to say regarding supply chain constraints as well as increased raw material costs. Lucid also dropped its estimate for 2022 vehicle production by up to 40% when it reported its fourth-quarter update at the end of February. Both stocks are down significantly so far in 2022. Rivian shares have dropped 60% year to date, while Lucid stock is down 39%. That has aligned the market capitalization of both around the $38 billion mark.That valuation still builds much success into the recent share prices, so any news that appears to signal a delay in ramping up production is likely to knock the stocks down. Workhorse has had its own struggles, having been forced to recall and repair 41 electric delivery vans that it had already sent to customers. It also suspended production due to the quality issue.While strengthening its financial position is a positive for potential long-term success, the dilution to existing shareholders isn't sitting well with investors today. Ultimately, each of these names will need to be shipping high volumes of their EV products at a sustained rate for investors to warm up to them over the long Shares nearly quadrupled to $400 in less than three months and have retraced as much as 80%since hitting an all-time high. While the upside move was, arguably, a bit much, this retracement overlooks how transformative the company's lending platform could be for lending institutions and consumers.The traditional vetting process for loan applications is costly and time-consuming. But with Upstart, approximately two-thirds of all personal loan applicants receive an answer immediately. By relying on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, Upstart is able to quickly vet applicants and save lending institutions time and money. Additionally, the company's AI-based platform is leading to a wider gamut of applicants getting approved -- even those with low credit scores.The recent weakness in Upstart likely has to do with the expectation of higher interest rates. With inflation hitting a 40-year high in January, the Federal Reserve has little choice but to hike interest rates to quell inflation. The concern is that higher rates could reduce the number of loan applicants and slow Upstart's rapid growth.However, it's important to note that 94% of the company's fourth-quarter revenue was service- or fee-based.  The company has no credit exposure, and therefore doesn't have to worry about loan losses or delinquencies. What's more, with the company's platform saving lending institutions money, they're even more liable to rely on Upstart as interest rates rise and the loan applicant pool thins out a bit.Keep in mind that personal loans are just a jumping-off point for Upstart. The acquisition of Prodigy Software in 2021 gives the company a path to tackle the auto loan origination market with its AI lending platform. Lovesac is attempting to turn this stodgy industry on its head in two unique ways.First,Lovesac is changing the game with its furniture. Although the company was initially known for its beanbag-styled chairs, \"sactionals\" now make up around 85% of total sales. Sactionals are modular couches that can be rearranged dozens of ways to fit most living spaces. In addition to their functionality, there are approximately 200 cover choices that buyers can choose from. This means sactionals will match any theme or color scheme of a home. And perhaps best of all, the yarn used to make these covers is entirely derived from recycled plastic water bottles. That's function, choice, and eco-friendly production rolled up into one product.The second source of differentiation for Lovesac is the company's omnichannel sales platform. Whereas most furniture stores were severely hampered by COVID-19 lockdowns, Lovesac was able to shift nearly half of its annual sales online. It's been approximately a decade since wireless download speeds were notably improved. The introduction of 5G download speeds should coax consumers and businesses to undertake a multiyear device replacement cycle.Qorvo supplies a number of key components used in next-generation smartphones with 5G capability. This includes Apple's iPhone, which accounted for in the neighborhood of 30% of Qorvo's sales in 2021. In fact, Apple's recently introduced iPhone SE with 5G capability is yet another opportunity for Qorvo's chips to find a home.In simple terms, the more 5G-capable smartphones that are produced, the more likely it is that Qorvo's solutions will find their way into those devices. According to IDC, U.S. smartphone shipments are expected to grow from 89.5 million units in 2021 to more than 153 million by mid-decade.Although smartphone solutions make up the bulk of Qorvo's revenue, it's not the company's only source of growth. The Aerospace & Defense ETF(BATS:ITA) has gained 5% year-to-date.The invasion likely means that the U.S. and other nations will only seek to increase their spending on defense. Already, Germany has pledged 100 billion euros to fund its armed services as well raise its defense spending above 2% of its GDP. This should provide tailwinds to defense stocks.There are multiple defense stocks with market-beating yields and safe dividends. Some of our top names include:General Dynamics(NYSE:GD)Lockheed Martin(NYSE:LMT)Northrop Grumman(NYSE:NOC)Safe Dividend Stocks: General Dynamics (GD)Our first defense name to consider for safe dividend stocks is General Dynamics, the fourth largest company in the industry. The $65 billion company generates annual revenue of $38.5 billion.General Dynamics operates four segments, including aerospace, combat systems, marine systems and technologies. The company operates a diversified business as possible in the aerospace and defense industry. No segment is responsible for more than a third of annual sales. The company’s product portfolio includes the M1 Abrams tank and Stryker vehicle as well as the Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines. This provides customers with a range of offerings to choose from.Aside from just defense products, General Dynamics produces the Gulf Stream business jet line, further diversifying the company’s business model.Many of the agreements that General Dynamics, and others in the space, have with government entities are long dated as it takes years to complete production. For example, it takes almost six years to complete a single Virginia-class submarine. This essentially guarantees that customers will not cancel orders part way through the building process in order to take a loss on the project with nothing to show for it.As a result of its strong business model, General Dynamics has been in a position to distribute dividends to shareholders for a long period of time. Including the recently announced increase of 5.9%, General Dynamics has a dividend growth streak of 31 years, the longest among the aerospace and defense companies. This growth streak also qualifies the company as a Dividend Aristocrat. The company’s dividend has a CAGR of 10% over the last decade.General Dynamics’ dividend also appears to very safe as the new annualized dividend of $5.04 implies a projected payout of 42% for 2022. Shares yield 2.1%, a favorable yield compared to the average of 1.45% for the S&P 500.Lockheed Martin (LMT)Our next name for consideration is Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor in the world. The company has a market capitalization of $122 billion and has annual sales of $67 billion.Lockheed Martin’s business is also diversified. Aeronautics is the largest segment within the company, but Lockheed Martin’s rotary and mission systems, space systems, and missiles and fire control contribute 26%, 17%, 16% of annual sales, respectively. These businesses produce combat ships, naval electronics, helicopters, missile defense systems and satellites.Lockheed Martin is highly dependent on its aeronautic business, but this has been very successful over the years as the company provides state of the art aircraft to customers, including the F-16, F-22, and the F-35. The latter of these is one of the most technologically advanced, as well as expensive, aircraft ever produced. These aircraft also need updating and maintenance work, providing recurring revenue streams that come with high margins.The company’s contracts are also long dated, giving Lockheed Martin the security of knowing that its programs will likely continue to be funded. In fact, Lockheed Martin currently has a backlog of F-35 production that won’t be worked off until the middle of this decade. This is before new orders are taken.Finally, as the world’s leading defense contractor, any additional spending on defense from the U.S. or its allies will almost surely benefit the company, which contributes to it being considered a safe dividend stock.Lockheed Martin has leveraged its leadership position in aerospace and defense to increase its dividend for 20 years with a CAGR of 11% since 2012.Shares of Lockheed Martin yield 2.5% as of the most recent close, more than 100 basis points higher than the average yield of the market index. The company is a leading name in the industry in its own right with annual sales approaching $36 billion and a market capitalization of $70 billion.Northrop Grumman also maintains a portfolio of a wide variety of products, including unmanned and manned aircraft, radars, targeting systems, tactical weapons, missile defense, hypersonics and space launchers.Northrop Grumman is one of the leaders in manned and unmanned aircraft systems. The company makes its own aircraft, such as the B-2B bomber, but also provides content for other aircraft, like the previously discussed F-35. The outflows total roughly $93 million over that stretch. Much of it is thanks to money being yanked away from Bitcoin products, according to the digital-asset manager.</p>\n<p>The cooling appetite stands in contrast to the growing pile of cryptocurrency ETF filings, with at least 18 applications landing with the SEC this year. That tally grew by three in the past two weeks after Gensler signaled that regulators may be more open to a Bitcoin ETF if it was based around futures rather than the cryptocurrency itself. However, even if the SEC finally green-lights the fund structure, it’s not a sure bet that a Bitcoin ETF would be met with huge demand, according to Meltem Demirors of Coinshares.</p>\n<p>“There’s so many venues for people to buy and sell Bitcoin, to get exposure to Bitcoin in tax-managed accounts,” said Demirors, chief strategy officer at CoinShares. “We’re not really sure what the demand will look like because is the maturation of crypto in the U.S. is already quite high.”</p>\n<p>After setting an all-time high of nearly $65,000 in April, Bitcoin resumed its volatile price swings. The world’s largest cryptocurrency dropped below $30,000 in June as environmental and regulatory concerns hammered sentiment. Bitcoin has since rebounded to more than $46,000, even as the U.S. Senate passed an infrastructure bill that would allow for broad oversight of virtual currencies.</p>\n<p>However, fund flows have yet to match the rebound. Bitcoin funds and futures are on track for a third straight month of outflows, the longest streak in data going back to 2014, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. The bulk of that decline is due to decreasing open interest in Bitcoin futures, meaning traders let their contracts roll off without renewing.</p>\n<p>The outflows might even be bigger, if not for the fact that the $30 billion Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (ticker GBTC) -- the largest crypto fund -- doesn’t allow for share redemptions. That’s after shares of the trust ballooned by the hundreds of millions earlier this year amid the crypto craze. The outflows total roughly $93 million over that stretch. Much of it is thanks to money being yanked away from Bitcoin products, according to the digital-asset manager.</p>\n<p>The cooling appetite stands in contrast to the growing pile of cryptocurrency ETF filings, with at least 18 applications landing with the SEC this year. That tally grew by three in the past two weeks after Gensler signaled that regulators may be more open to a Bitcoin ETF if it was based around futures rather than the cryptocurrency itself. However, even if the SEC finally green-lights the fund structure, it’s not a sure bet that a Bitcoin ETF would be met with huge demand, according to Meltem Demirors of Coinshares.</p>\n<p>“There’s so many venues for people to buy and sell Bitcoin, to get exposure to Bitcoin in tax-managed accounts,” said Demirors, chief strategy officer at CoinShares. “We’re not really sure what the demand will look like because is the maturation of crypto in the U.S. is already quite high.”</p>\n<p>After setting an all-time high of nearly $65,000 in April, Bitcoin resumed its volatile price swings. The world’s largest cryptocurrency dropped below $30,000 in June as environmental and regulatory concerns hammered sentiment. Bitcoin has since rebounded to more than $46,000, even as the U.S. Senate passed an infrastructure bill that would allow for broad oversight of virtual currencies.</p>\n<p>However, fund flows have yet to match the rebound. Bitcoin funds and futures are on track for a third straight month of outflows, the longest streak in data going back to 2014, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. The bulk of that decline is due to decreasing open interest in Bitcoin futures, meaning traders let their contracts roll off without renewing.</p>\n<p>The outflows might even be bigger, if not for the fact that the $30 billion Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (ticker GBTC) -- the largest crypto fund -- doesn’t allow for share redemptions. That’s after shares of the trust ballooned by the hundreds of millions earlier this year amid the crypto craze.
