Industrial Average gained 200 points amid a jump in Goldman Sachs and Apple shares. The S&amp;P 500 rose 1% led by financials and technology shares, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.2%.</p><p>Wall Street came off a turbulent session for equities after multiple news outlets reported Thursday afternoon that President Joe Biden is slated to propose much higher capital gains taxes for the rich.</p><p>Bloomberg News reported that Biden is planning a&nbsp;capital gains tax hike to as high as 43.4%&nbsp;for wealthy Americans.</p><p>The proposal would hike the capital gains rate to 39.6% for&nbsp;those earning $1 million or more, up from 20% currently, according to Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters and the New York Times later also reported similar stories.</p><p>“We expect Congress will pass a scaled back version of this tax increase,” wrote Goldman Sachs economists in a note. “We expect Congress will settle on a more modest increase, potentially around 28%.”</p><p>Week to date, the three major averages are all down about 1%.</p><p>Intel shares dropped more than 5% after it issued second-quarter earnings guidance&nbsp;below analysts’ hopes. American Express fell over 4% after the credit card company reported quarterly revenue that was slightly short of forecasts.</p><p>Snap shares, meanwhile, jumped 9% after it said&nbsp;it saw accelerating revenue growth and strong user numbers during the first quarter. Snap broke even on the bottom line while posting revenue of $770 million.</p><p>Corporations have for the most part managed to beat Wall Street’s forecasts thus far into earnings season. Still, strong first-quarter results have been met with a more tepid response from investors, who have not, to date, snapped up shares of companies with some of the best results.</p><p>Strategists say already-high valuations and near-record-high levels on the S&amp;P 500 and Dow have kept traders’ enthusiasm in check. But indexes are within 1.5% of their all-time highs even after Thursday’s losses.</p><p>Bitcoin&nbsp;plunged overnight, perhaps in part because of concerns about higher capital gains taxes, with the cryptocurrency last down about 8%, according to CoinMetrics. Other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum were also getting hit. At a starting price of $1,300, I believe that Apple makes the right moves by introducing a compelling desktop computer that is relatively affordable.</p>\n<p>The question is whether the iMac matters enough to investors. I think it does, but only to the extent that the complete ecosystem is important to the investment thesis (see next section). Not all announcements will amount to much, from the perspective of future financial performance. But they all add to Apple's diverse ecosystem.</p>\n<p>Tim Cook opened his presentation with news on services. A quick update on Apple Card Family means that other members of a household can share credit scores and access credit. This can prove to be a significant development, as it adds purchasing power to Apple's consumer base.</p>\n<p>Later, updates within the Wearables and Home segment were unveiled, including the Apple TV 4K with A12 Bionic chip. Apple does not break down revenues or profits within the Wearables and Home segment, where Apple TV belongs. Reuters and the New York Times later also reported similar stories.</p><p>“We expect Congress will pass a scaled back version of this tax increase,” wrote Goldman Sachs economists in a note. “We expect Congress will settle on a more modest increase, potentially around 28%.”</p><p>Week to date, the three major averages are all down about 1%.</p><p>Intel shares dropped more than 5% after it issued second-quarter earnings guidance&nbsp;below analysts’ hopes. American Express fell over 4% after the credit card company reported quarterly revenue that was slightly short of forecasts.</p><p>Snap shares, meanwhile, jumped 9% after it said&nbsp;it saw accelerating revenue growth and strong user numbers during the first quarter. Snap broke even on the bottom line while posting revenue of $770 million.</p><p>Corporations have for the most part managed to beat Wall Street’s forecasts thus far into earnings season. While the company posted four consecutive quarters of adjusted losses per share in FY 2020, American Airlines' losses narrowed significantly in Q3 and Q4. After American's Q3 earnings report in October, the stock initially dipped and then more than doubled over the next five months through the end of March 2021. But now, analysts predict that American's earnings recovery will reverse. They see Q1 FY 2021 adjusted losses per share widening YOY, and also on a sequential basis relative to Q4 FY 2020.\nAmerican Airlines has also reported four straight quarters of YOY revenue declines, also the first in several years. That dropped to a low of 42.3% in Q2 and then recovered somewhat through the second half of the year, reaching 64.1% for Q4.
