Then, seemingly out of nowhere, rates have dived lower, with the 10-year Treasury trading at a 1.32% yield, down from near 1.70% at the end of May. The benchmark 30-year Treasury bond is back at the 1.94% level. These are the lowest interest rate levels since last winter.</p>\n<p>For income investors, this is another setback in what has become over a ten-year problem. While rates certainly could rise again, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> thing seems certain: the Federal Reserve will not raise rates until it is positive the economy is back at full strength. The only move the Fed looks poised to make in the near term is the beginning of the tapering of the $120 billion per month purchase of Treasury and mortgage debt.</p>\n<p>We screened the BofA Securities research universe looking for blue chip stocks rated Buy that paid at least a 4% dividend. We found five that are very appealing now to growth and income investors. While all are rated Buy, it is important to remember that no single analyst report should be used as a sole basis for any buying or selling decision.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MO\">Altria</a></p>\n<p>This maker of tobacco products offers value investors a great entry point now and was hit recently as cigarette sales have slowed. Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO) is the parent company of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PM\">Philip Morris</a> USA (cigarettes), UST (smokeless), John Middleton (cigars), Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Philip Morris Capital. PMUSA enjoys a 51% share of the U.S. cigarette market, led by its top cigarette brand Marlboro.</p>\n<p>Altria also owns over 10% of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer. In March 2008, it spun off its international cigarette business to shareholders. In December 2018, the company acquired 35% of Juul Labs, and it has purchased a 45% stake in cannabis company Cronus for $1.8 billion.</p>\n<p>BofA Securities is very favorable toward the company’s plans for the future:</p>\n<blockquote>\n Management presented at CAGNY (Consumer Analyst Group of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NWY\">New York</a>) where it discussed a new corporate focus on ESG, additional details on its IQOS plans and its “Moving beyond smoking” 10-yr plan. Smokeables (cigarettes/cigars) will remain an important part of its strategy, providing funding behind its long-term growth and shareholder returns. Over the last 5-yrs, smokeable and other comprehensive income grew at a 5.5% compounded annual growth rate despite volume declines.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Shareholders receive a 7.35% dividend. The analyst has a $58 target price on the shares, while the consensus target is lower at $53.89. Altria stock closed on Wednesday at $46.79 per share.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CVX\">Chevron</a></p>\n<p>This energy giant is a solid way for investors who are more conservative to be positioned in the sector. Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) is a U.S.-based integrated oil and gas company, with worldwide operations in exploration and production, refining and marketing, transportation and petrochemicals. The company sports a sizable dividend and has a solid place in the sector when it comes to natural gas and liquefied natural gas.</p>\n<p>With the strongest financial base of the majors, coupled with an attractive relative asset base, many on Wall Street feel that Chevron offers the most straightforwardly positive risk/reward. Although current conditions do not warrant a large focus on production growth, Chevron possesses numerous medium-term drivers (<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NBL\">Noble</a> integration, Permian, TCO/WPMP expansion, Gulf of Mexico exploration, Vaca Muerta, and so on) that should support production levels in the coming years.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IBM\">IBM</a></p>\n<p>This old-school tech giant still offers investors a very solid entry point. International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) is a leading provider of enterprise solutions, offering a broad portfolio of information technology (IT) hardware, business and IT services, and a full suite of software solutions.</p>\n<p>The company integrates its hardware products with its software and services offerings in order to provide high-value solutions. Analysts have cited the company’s potential in the public cloud as a reason for their positive outlook going forward.</p>\n<p>CEO Ginni Rommety, who had been in the position since 2012, stepped down in January, and the stock market greeted the news in a very positive manner. Arvind Krishna, who has led the company’s cloud computing business, became the new chief executive. Rometty will remain as executive board chair until the end of the year.</p>\n<p>Holders of IBM stock receive a 4.69% dividend. The $175 BofA Securities price target is well above the $144.14 consensus figure. The shares closed at $139.82 on Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Shareholders receive a 5.21% dividend, which analysts feel comfortable will remain at current levels. The BofA Securities price target is $125, which compares to a $122.48 consensus target and the last Chevron stock trade on Wednesday at $102.93 a share.</p>\n<p>LyondellBasell</p>\n<p>This top chemical company with a sterling balance sheet is another solid play for conservative investors. LyondellBasell Industries N.V. (NYSE: LYB) manufactures chemicals and polymers, refines crude oil, produces gasoline blending components and develops and licenses technologies for production of polymers.</p>\n<p>Over half of earnings are generated in the company’s Olefins and Polyolefins Americas segment, where costs are linked to the price of cheap natural gas in the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/UBNK\">United</a> States, while selling prices are correlated with the price of oil. The company has pursued a strategy of low-cost, high return on invested capital debottlenecks coupled with cash returns to shareholders.</p>\n<p>Note that debottlenecking is the process of identifying specific areas or equipment in oil and gas facilities that limit the flow of product (known as bottlenecks) and optimizing them so that overall capacity in the plant can be increased.</p>\n<p>The company offers a 4.50% dividend. BofA Securities has set a $117 price target. Now, as the pandemic’s flurry of activity fades, the question is whether the decade-long slide will continue.</p>\n<p>The answer is no, according to Daniel Pinto, who oversees JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.’s massive Wall Street operations.</p>\n<p>The industry’s collective revenue from trading -- its “wallet” -- probably reached its nadir before Covid-19, he said in an interview. And from those depths, things are likely to improve for years to come. That is, setting aside 2020.</p>\n<p>“You’re going to have, over time, an increasing wallet,” said Pinto, the bank’s co-president and co-chief operating officer. Post-crisis regulations and changes in market structure, such as electronification, that squeezed margins are now mostly in place, and the system is working well, he said. “From here you would expect that as the world grows and capital markets grow, the trading businesses will grow.”</p>\n<p>It might be hard for shareholders to remember that optimism in coming months as global banks face tough comparisons with 2020’s bonanza. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. are set to kick off second-quarter earnings announcements next week. Already, JPMorgan Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon signaled a potential 38% decline from a year earlier, as he and executives from Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc. sought to temper expectations in recent weeks.</p>\n<p>For much of a decade after the financial crisis, total wallet for the 12 largest trading firms fell again and again. Their combined revenue from the business bottomed out at $110 billion in 2017 and hardly improved in the two years that followed, according to data from analytics firm Coalition Greenwich. The reasons were myriad: more stringent rules, the rise of electronic trading, persistently low interest rates, pressure from new entrants and the outright disappearance of some products post-crisis.</p>\n<p>Many of those changes have played out, and capital markets are expanding. Pinto and colleagues said that longer-term growth trend will be apparent this year.</p>\n<p>“If you put last year aside, which was a one-off, this year should be a very strong outcome when you put it on a multiyear basis,” said Troy Rohrbaugh, JPMorgan’s global head of markets.</p>\n<p>Equities will expand the industry’s wallet more than fixed-income products, Rohrbaugh predicted. The gains continued even as concerns about inflation have increased speculation that the Federal Reserve would be forced to take steps to slow the economy.</p>\n<p>The combination of big gains and a more hawkish Fed have raised concerns that the market has become too complacent. If inflation continues to run hot for long enough, the central bank could be forced to act more quickly than the market expects—and&nbsp;cause stocks to tumble. Others worry that&nbsp;U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.</p>\n<p>For those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. History suggests otherwise.</p>\n<p>Since 1979, the S&amp;P 500 has gained 10% or more 14 times during the first half of the year, and the index has gone on to average a 6.3% gain over the second half of the year. What’s more, the index finished the second half of the year higher In 11 of those instances, or 79% of the time.</p>\n<p>Even the losses, when they occurred, weren’t all that bad. The S&amp;P 500 dropped 1.9% in the second half of 1983 and 3.5% during the last six months of 1986.</p>\n<p>The one exception was the last six months of 1987 when the index fell 19% during the second half of the year. That period included Black Monday, when the S&amp;P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called&nbsp;portfolio insurance&nbsp;was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was&nbsp;a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.</p>\n<p>Still, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&amp;P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank&nbsp;Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.</p>\n<p>That 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&amp;P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%. The company points out that substituting a cup of Oatly for a cup of cow's milk reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land use and energy consumption.</p><p>Tastewise, which provides food and beverage data and intelligence, said in a December 2020 report that \"plant-based everything\" will be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the top 10 U.S. trends for this year.</p><p>\"The number <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> reason consumers turn to plant-based food and beverage? Health,\" the report said.</p><p>\"Plant-based is no longer just an 'alternative' to meat, but rather a significantcategory in itself.\"</p><p>Oatly's key markets are Sweden, Germany and the U.K., though its products were available in 60,000 retail stores and 32,200 coffee shops around the world as of December 31, 2020. Among the places where customers can find Oatly is Starbucks <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SBUX\">$(SBUX)$</a>, where demand was so high there was a shortage soon after the coffee chain introduced beverages made with the item.</p><p>COVID-19 has impacted Oatly's business as lockdowns around the world limited access to restaurants, bars and other dining establishments.</p><p>In 2020, Oatly had revenue of $421.4 million, up from $204.0 million the year before. However, the company reported a loss of $60.4 million \"reflecting our continued investment in production, brand awareness, new markets and product development,\" the prospectus said.</p><p>Oatly is classified as an \"emerging growth company,\" which means it does not have to make the same disclosures required of bigger public companies. The company says it \"focused on targeting coffee's tastemakers, professional baristas at independent coffee shops\" as a way to enter the market.\"</p><p>By December 31, 2020, Oatly was in more than 7,500 retail shops and 10,000 coffee shops in the U.S. Revenue in 2020 totaled $100 million in the U.S.</p><p>Oatly can also be found in 11,000 coffee and tea shops in China, and at more than 6,000 retail and specialty shops across the country, including thousands of Starbucks locations.</p><p>Limited oat supply could have a financial impact. Oatly depends on five suppliers for the oats it uses, purchasing this ingredient through millers in Sweden, Denmark, the U.S. and Belgium.</p><p>\"We have in the past experienced interruptions in the supply of oats from one supplier that resulted in delays in delivery to us,\" the company said, noting that its oat supply is also vulnerable to natural disasters such as drought or floods.</p><p>\"We could experience similar delays in the future from any of these suppliers.\"</p><p>The company also depends on select suppliers for enzymes, including one supplier that provides an enzyme for some of Oatly's products, including Barista Edition oat milk.</p><p>The main components of the company's products are manufactured in four primary facilities as of March 2021, which could also be a problem if something significant happens at any one facility.</p><p>The dairy market is highly competitive. Oatly identifies conventional dairy companies, including Dean Foods Inc. (DFODQ) and Lactalis as competitors, as well as the growing array of plant-based dairy alternative companies that are entering the market, including soy, almond, hemp and cashew milk brands.</p><p>All of these companies are competing for a finite number of retail stores, coffee shops, foodservice clients and consumers.</p><p>\"In order for us to not only maintain our market position, but also to continue to grow and acquire more consumers, some of which may be switching from traditional dairy to plant-based alternatives, we must continue to provide delicious, high-quality products, and consumers must believe in our vision for a food system that is better for people and the planet,\" the company said.</p><p>Oatly's marketing and COVID-19 might be a hurdle to growth. The ensuing weeks have brought a&nbsp;surprisingly weak jobs report&nbsp;and a&nbsp;stronger-than-expected consumer inflation report, for example.</p>\n<p>And unlike&nbsp;last month’s meeting, there wasn’t an attention-grabbing selloff in Treasuries to command officials’ attention. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April.&nbsp;The 10-year yield has&nbsp;dropped to 1.64%&nbsp;from 1.74% on March 31.</p>\n<p>Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.</p>\n<p>Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:</p>\n<p><b>“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?</b></p>\n<p>One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.</p>\n<p>Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.</p>\n<p>Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation:&nbsp; That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.</p>\n<p>“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”</p>\n<p><b>Taper Timeline</b></p>\n<p>Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.</p>\n<p>Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases&nbsp;late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.</p>\n<p>So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.</p>\n<p><b>Labor-Market Outlook</b></p>\n<p>One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.</p>\n<p>Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes:&nbsp; How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?</p>\n<p>Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.</p>\n<p>Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.</p>\n<p>“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”</p>\n<p>Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes:&nbsp; Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. The ensuing weeks have brought a surprisingly weak jobs report and a stronger-than-expected consumer inflation report, for example.\nAnd unlike last month’s meeting, there wasn’t an attention-grabbing selloff in Treasuries to command officials’ attention. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April. The 10-year yield has dropped to 1.64% from 1.74% on March 31.\nYet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.\nHere’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:\n“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?\nOne popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.\nMizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.\nYet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation:  That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.\n“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”\nTaper Timeline\nInvestors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.\nMost on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.\nSo any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.\nLabor-Market Outlook\nOne key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.\nStill, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes:  How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?\nBefore the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.\nClarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.\n“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”\nUltimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes:  Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. Michelle Wine Estates and Philip Morris Capital. PMUSA enjoys a 51% share of the U.S. cigarette market, led by its top cigarette brand Marlboro.</p>\n<p>Altria also owns over 10% of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer. In March 2008, it spun off its international cigarette business to shareholders. The company sports a sizable dividend and has a solid place in the sector when it comes to natural gas and liquefied natural gas.</p>\n<p>With the strongest financial base of the majors, coupled with an attractive relative asset base, many on Wall Street feel that Chevron offers the most straightforwardly positive risk/reward. The company has pursued a strategy of low-cost, high return on invested capital debottlenecks coupled with cash returns to shareholders.</p>\n<p>Note that debottlenecking is the process of identifying specific areas or equipment in oil and gas facilities that limit the flow of product (known as bottlenecks) and optimizing them so that overall capacity in the plant can be increased.</p>\n<p>The company offers a 4.50% dividend. BofA Securities has set a $117 price target. Others worry that&nbsp;U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.</p>\n<p>For those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. History suggests otherwise.</p>\n<p>Since 1979, the S&amp;P 500 has gained 10% or more 14 times during the first half of the year, and the index has gone on to average a 6.3% gain over the second half of the year. What’s more, the index finished the second half of the year higher In 11 of those instances, or 79% of the time.</p>\n<p>Even the losses, when they occurred, weren’t all that bad. The S&amp;P 500 dropped 1.9% in the second half of 1983 and 3.5% during the last six months of 1986.</p>\n<p>The one exception was the last six months of 1987 when the index fell 19% during the second half of the year. That period included Black Monday, when the S&amp;P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called&nbsp;portfolio insurance&nbsp;was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was&nbsp;a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.</p>\n<p>Still, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&amp;P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank&nbsp;Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.</p>\n<p>That 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&amp;P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%.
