Luna's crash was not because of "... weren't able to survive this week's extreme market turbulence."It was a manipulated and calculated play by big hedge funds to purposefully bring it down. Many people's retirement fund was gone all because of this. It's not time to victim blame and say "ToLd YoU nOt To pLaY cRyPtO, sEe WhAt HaPpEnS nOw". If there's a chance for big hedge funds to crash legit stocks like Amazon / Google without repurcussions, they will definitely do it without batting an eye. This can apply to stocks, futures, options, and other assets.</p><p>On the buyer side of the trade, FTD implies the lack of money to proceed with the order. On the sell side of the trade, it implies not owning the asset to be sold.</p><p>FTD is particularly connected to naked short selling, which has been illegal since the 2008 financial crisis. Naked short selling involves short selling a certain asset that you don&#39;t own or haven&#39;t borrowed. These nonexistent shares are often called &#34;phantom shares.&#34;</p><p>This can have a negative consequence on the liquidity of the shorted asset, as well as diluting its share price.</p><p>In general, traders and retail investors closely watch gailure-to-deliver data. Many shareholders suspect that certain companies have been the target of predatory short-selling practices, such as naked shorting, which have hurt the performance of their stocks.</p><p>The SEC releases failure-to-deliver data for the first half of a given month at the end of that month. And it releases data for the second half of the given month around the 15th day of the following month.</p><h2>Latest APE and AMC Failure-to-Deliver Data</h2><p><b>AMC Preferred Equity</b> (APE) went public on August 22. Since then, its associated failure-to-deliver have been drawing attention. Data for the six trading days between August 24 and August 31 indicates that there were 129,525,091 FTDs during that time period.</p><p>During the same period, <b>AMC Entertainment</b>&#39;s (<b>AMC</b>) stock recorded 6,294,387 FTDs.</p><p>To get a sense of how high these numbers are, <b>Tesla</b>&#39;s(<b>TSLA</b>) stock posted 183,594 FTDs in the same period, and fellow meme stock <b>GameStop</b> (<b>GME</b>) posted only 265,736 FTDs.</p><p>It&#39;s worth noting that, if a short seller intends to deliver an asset as soon as delivery restrictions are removed, the SEC grants them 35 calendar days following the settlement day in which to close out the position by purchasing the non-delivered securities.</p><p>Therefore, after this 35 calendar-day period, there&#39;s the possibility that the share prices of these securities will increase as deliveries are made.</p><p>But keep in mind that this technicality can only be considered in cases of relevant surges in FTDs – usually exceeding 1 million.</p><p>On August 24, APEs registered a whopping 43,438,257 FTDs. That&#39;s about $305 million worth when multiplied by the trading session&#39;s share price of $7.02. use of synthetic shares.</p><p>According to many retail investors who bet on AMC, the main factors preventing new short squeezes are fraud and a lack of transparency about trading structures in the U.S. financial market.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/884d5b71b635a706c734b0cedc139665\" tg-width=\"830\" tg-height=\"524\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A disclaimer on the SEC website says, &#34;Fails-to-deliver can occur for a number of reasons on both long and short sales.&#34; The network was restarted today after a nine-hour break, and several crypto exchanges have now delisted LUNA.LUNA and the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin weren't able to survive this week's extreme market turbulence. LUNA's price has plummeted from almost $90 a month ago to a fraction of a dollar in what's being called a \"death spiral.\"What's next for Terra?After two days of silence, Do Kwon, CEO of Terraform Labs, today (Friday) outlined new plans to restart the Terra ecosystem. His new proposal echoed plans put forward yesterday by a group of developers called the Terra Builders Alliance.In a post, Kwon admits the UST stablecoin has failed and can't be rebuilt. However, he thinks the ecosystem and community are what's worth preserving. He argued, \"Although in distress, [we have] strong brand recognition and a name that almost everyone in the world will have heard about.\"Kwon suggests resetting the network and distributing 1 billion LUNA tokens amongst LUNA holders, UST holders, and other parties. The new network would be entirely community run, taking Terraform Labs and Kwon out of the equation.What it means for investorsThere's a small chance investors might be able to recover some of their losses as a result of moves to revive the Terra network. But don't expect miracles. The Luna Foundation Guard -- a non-profit designed to support UST -- already emptied its reserves as it tried to prop up the failing token. The brand may be widely recognized, but trust in the network has plunged as quickly as LUNA's price.It is heartbreaking to see stories of people who've lost their life savings because of Terra's collapse. The Terra Reddit forum contains helplines around the world for people to call, as well as stories from people who've lost significant amounts of money.Going forward, here are two lessons all crypto investors can take away from Terra's failed stablecoin experiment.1. Only invest money you can afford to loseCryptocurrency investment is high risk and there are no guarantees. Many people see the headlines about eye-watering profits and invest because they think they might get rich. Some cryptos have generated incredible profits, but many have failed completely as well. This is a brutal market, some of the technology is experimental, and even a top 20 crypto can collapse in a matter of days.Never borrow money to buy crypto. Moreover, if the collapse of any individual crypto -- or the whole market -- might devastate your finances, then don't invest. Prioritize your emergency fund, retirement savings, debt payments, and other financial goals that contribute to long-term wealth over any crypto investments.2. Stablecoins are not as stable as they soundStablecoins are a key part of the decentralized finance system, often offering high rates of interest to people who deposit on different platforms. Sadly, some people were tempted by the almost 20% APY offered on UST and moved their savings out of bank accounts and into the Terra network.The trouble is that money in a bank account is protected by FDIC insurance against collapse. Money on DeFi platforms is not. Plus, U.S. dollars in a bank account may devalue slowly because of inflation but they won't collapse overnight.There are a number of stablecoins out there that maintain their values in different ways. UST was an algorithmic stablecoin backed by the LUNA token, but -- in spite of assurances to the contrary -- it couldn't hold its peg in the face of extreme volatility.If you're considering using stablecoins and DeFi platforms, research how that particular token supports itself. For example, USD Coin (USDC) is a fiat-backed stablecoin, and should have $1 in reserve for every token it issues. However, even fiat-backed tokens could fall. Never assume a stablecoin is as stable as the currency itself.Bottom lineAt time of writing, Terra's blockchain is up and running again and the community are mulling over ways to resuscitate the network. But there's only so much that can be done to restore people's losses. The network was restarted today after a nine-hour break, and several crypto exchanges have now delisted LUNA.LUNA and the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin weren't able to survive this week's extreme market turbulence. LUNA's price has plummeted from almost $90 a month ago to a fraction of a dollar in what's being called a \"death spiral.\"What's next for Terra?After two days of silence, Do Kwon, CEO of Terraform Labs, today (Friday) outlined new plans to restart the Terra ecosystem. His new proposal echoed plans put forward yesterday by a group of developers called the Terra Builders Alliance.In a post, Kwon admits the UST stablecoin has failed and can't be rebuilt. However, he thinks the ecosystem and community are what's worth preserving. He argued, \"Although in distress, [we have] strong brand recognition and a name that almost everyone in the world will have heard about.\"Kwon suggests resetting the network and distributing 1 billion LUNA tokens amongst LUNA holders, UST holders, and other parties. The new network would be entirely community run, taking Terraform Labs and Kwon out of the equation.What it means for investorsThere's a small chance investors might be able to recover some of their losses as a result of moves to revive the Terra network. But don't expect miracles. The Luna Foundation Guard -- a non-profit designed to support UST -- already emptied its reserves as it tried to prop up the failing token. The brand may be widely recognized, but trust in the network has plunged as quickly as LUNA's price.It is heartbreaking to see stories of people who've lost their life savings because of Terra's collapse. The Terra Reddit forum contains helplines around the world for people to call, as well as stories from people who've lost significant amounts of money.Going forward, here are two lessons all crypto investors can take away from Terra's failed stablecoin experiment.1. Only invest money you can afford to loseCryptocurrency investment is high risk and there are no guarantees. Many people see the headlines about eye-watering profits and invest because they think they might get rich. Some cryptos have generated incredible profits, but many have failed completely as well. This is a brutal market, some of the technology is experimental, and even a top 20 crypto can collapse in a matter of days.Never borrow money to buy crypto. Moreover, if the collapse of any individual crypto -- or the whole market -- might devastate your finances, then don't invest. Prioritize your emergency fund, retirement savings, debt payments, and other financial goals that contribute to long-term wealth over any crypto investments.2. Stablecoins are not as stable as they soundStablecoins are a key part of the decentralized finance system, often offering high rates of interest to people who deposit on different platforms. Sadly, some people were tempted by the almost 20% APY offered on UST and moved their savings out of bank accounts and into the Terra network.The trouble is that money in a bank account is protected by FDIC insurance against collapse. Money on DeFi platforms is not. Plus, U.S. dollars in a bank account may devalue slowly because of inflation but they won't collapse overnight.There are a number of stablecoins out there that maintain their values in different ways.
