Chinese EV stocks NIO(NYSE:NIO), Li Auto(NASDAQ:LI) and XPeng(NYSE:XPEV) are well in the red today following yesterday’s bullish wave.So, what’s going on with Chinese EV companies lately?Well, today Nio offered investors an update of its status pertaining to the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (HFCAA). If you recall, a number of tech-forward Chinese companies have been under regulatory duress lately. Indeed, several Chinese companies, including Nio and XPeng, have been the subject of delisting fears after failing to comply with U.S. auditing laws.However, Nio provided investors insight into its current phase in its regulatory snafu. As per the press release, the company is currently in violation of an HFCAA rule by using an auditor “whose working paper cannot be inspected or investigated completely by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).”Nio attempted to reassure investors that it is exploring potential solutions, highlighting its recent March secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.Unfortunately, the company may have failed to persuade investors as NIO stock eyes a nearly 10% drop this morning. It’s not alone, however. Chinese EV competitors Li Auto and XPeng are also down today, about 5% and 8%, respectively.What else do you need to know about Chinese EV makers today?Chinese EV Stocks Slump Following Mid-Week Market BoomChinese EV companies may also beseeing reversals from yesterday’s interest-rate-induced boom. Yesterday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reassured investors that the Fed is not considering a 75-basis-point hike. The markets responded with outstanding optimism. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each rose about 3%, marking their best single day since 2020.Unfortunately, investors quickly regained their bearish outlook. A number of companies are currently backtracking from yesterday’s gains as the S&P treads down nearly 2%. (NYSE:XPEV) [9868:HK]. My Neutral view on the stock is based on the premise that the company's shares aren't likely to rebound significantly (let alone return to $50 levels) in the near term. The negative headwinds hurting XPEV's shares such as investor style shift, supply chain disruptions for the Chinese automotive industry and concerns over the potential delisting of US-listed companies are likely to persist for a while. With its valuations reflecting most of the negatives after the sell-down in recent months, a Hold rating for XPeng is appropriate.</p><p><b>XPEV Stock Key Metrics</b></p><p>XPEV describes itself as "a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs" which targets "technology-savvy middle-class consumers" in its press releases. XPeng will report its Q4 2021 financial results on March 28, 2022, so I will review the company's most recent Q3 2021 financial metrics to see how the company has performed.</p><p>XPeng issued its Q3 2021 financial results media release on November 23, 2021 before the market opened, and this was well received by the market with XPEV's shares rising by +8% from $47.39 of November 22, 2021 to cross the $50 mark and close at $51.30 as of November 23, 2021. In the next week, XPeng's stock price gained further to reach a 52-week high of $56.45 on December 1, 2021, during intra-day trading.</p><p>The company's revenue expanded by +187% YoYin Q3 2021, and this was +9% better than what the market had anticipated. XPEV's vehicle deliveries almost tripled YoY from 8,578 units in Q3 2020 to 25,666 units in Q3 2021, and this exceeded the higher end of the company's earlier vehicle deliveries guidance of 23,000-25,000 units. Looking forward, XPeng expects to achieve vehicle deliveries of 35,500 units (mid-point of guidance) in the fourth quarter of 2021, which would be equivalent to a +174% YoY increase. XPEV also guided that its revenue should jump by +156% YoY to RMB7.3 billion (mid-point of guidance) in Q4 2021, which was +26% higher than the sell-side's consensus fourth-quarter top line estimate at the time of the Q3 earnings release.</p><p>But the good times did not last, as I highlight in the subsequent section.</p><p><b>Why Has XPeng Stock Dropped?</b></p><p>XPeng's stock price has fallen roughly by half since the start of the year. XPEV's shares fell from $50.27 as of January 3, 2022 (first trading day of the year) to $24.97 as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>In my opinion, there are three factors that have led to the severe decline in XPEV's share price.</p><p>Firstly, XPeng has suffered from a substantial valuation de-rating.</p><p>Investors have been rotating away from high (revenue) growth, loss-making stocks to profitable companies which are returning capital to shareholders via dividends or buybacks. This shift in investor preferences is aligned with expectations of rising interest rates in the future, which tend to be negative for high-growth companies.</p><p>Specifically, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple has compressed from above 8 times in late-November 2021 to 2.8 times as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>Secondly, there are concerns that the revenue growth and margins of Chinese electric vehicle companies like XPEV could disappoint the market in 2022.</p><p>Market consensus already expects XPeng's top line expansion to slow from +252% in fiscal 2021 to +97% in FY 2022. Besides a higher base for comparison in 2021, it is possible that supply chain disruptions could be a drag on Chinese electric vehicle sales in 2022. A recent March 11, 2021 <i>South China Morning Post</i> article highlighted that China Passenger Car Association's 5.5 million NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales forecasts could be too bullish, as a researcher from North China University of Technology quoted in the article "predicted that output of batteries and car chips may only be enough for 4.4 million NEVs this year."</p><p>Even if XPeng and its Chinese electric vehicle peers are able to secure sufficient semiconductor chips and batteries to meet market demand, it is likely to come at the expense of higher costs and wider losses. In other words, XPEV's 2022 year-to-date share price correction could be attributed to concerns of below-expectations financial results for the company this year.</p><p>Thirdly, worries about the potential risk of Chinese stocks delisting from the US might have hurt investor sentiment for XPEV as well.</p><p>XPeng's share price corrected from $28.65 as of March 9, 2022, to $19.75 as of March 14, 2022. This was linked to news of the SEC listing "five China-based companies that could be delisted if they don't allow U.S. authorities to review company audits for three straight years" as reported by <i>Seeking Alpha News</i> on March 11, 2022. XPEV's shares later rebounded strongly to close at $27.53 as of March 16, 2022, after <i>Xinhua News Agency</i> highlighted that "the Chinese government continues to support various types of companies to list overseas." This seems to suggest that China will engage with the US on the topic of Chinese listings in the US and related audit issues.</p><p>XPEV is in a relatively better position than most other US-listed Chinese companies as its shares are already dual-listed in both the US and Hong Kong. But assuming that XPeng is eventually compelled to delist from the US market in a few years' time, it is still a negative for the company's shares. The Hong Kong equity market or other stock markets for that matter are inferior to the US market in terms of liquidity and valuations. The negative headwinds hurting XPEV's shares such as investor style shift, supply chain disruptions for the Chinese automotive industry and concerns over the potential delisting of US-listed companies are likely to persist for a while. With its valuations reflecting most of the negatives after the sell-down in recent months, a Hold rating for XPeng is appropriate.XPEV Stock Key MetricsXPEV describes itself as \"a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs\" which targets \"technology-savvy middle-class consumers\" in its press releases. XPeng will report its Q4 2021 financial results on March 28, 2022, so I will review the company's most recent Q3 2021 financial metrics to see how the company has performed.XPeng issued its Q3 2021 financial results media release on November 23, 2021 before the market opened, and this was well received by the market with XPEV's shares rising by +8% from $47.39 of November 22, 2021 to cross the $50 mark and close at $51.30 as of November 23, 2021. In the next week, XPeng's stock price gained further to reach a 52-week high of $56.45 on December 1, 2021, during intra-day trading.The company's revenue expanded by +187% YoYin Q3 2021, and this was +9% better than what the market had anticipated. XPEV's vehicle deliveries almost tripled YoY from 8,578 units in Q3 2020 to 25,666 units in Q3 2021, and this exceeded the higher end of the company's earlier vehicle deliveries guidance of 23,000-25,000 units. Looking forward, XPeng expects to achieve vehicle deliveries of 35,500 units (mid-point of guidance) in the fourth quarter of 2021, which would be equivalent to a +174% YoY increase. XPEV also guided that its revenue should jump by +156% YoY to RMB7.3 billion (mid-point of guidance) in Q4 2021, which was +26% higher than the sell-side's consensus fourth-quarter top line estimate at the time of the Q3 earnings release.But the good times did not last, as I highlight in the subsequent section.Why Has XPeng Stock Dropped?XPeng's stock price has fallen roughly by half since the start of the year. XPEV's shares fell from $50.27 as of January 3, 2022 (first trading day of the year) to $24.97 as of March 17, 2022.In my opinion, there are three factors that have led to the severe decline in XPEV's share price.Firstly, XPeng has suffered from a substantial valuation de-rating.Investors have been rotating away from high (revenue) growth, loss-making stocks to profitable companies which are returning capital to shareholders via dividends or buybacks. This shift in investor preferences is aligned with expectations of rising interest rates in the future, which tend to be negative for high-growth companies.Specifically, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple has compressed from above 8 times in late-November 2021 to 2.8 times as of March 17, 2022.Secondly, there are concerns that the revenue growth and margins of Chinese electric vehicle companies like XPEV could disappoint the market in 2022.Market consensus already expects XPeng's top line expansion to slow from +252% in fiscal 2021 to +97% in FY 2022. Besides a higher base for comparison in 2021, it is possible that supply chain disruptions could be a drag on Chinese electric vehicle sales in 2022. A recent March 11, 2021 South China Morning Post article highlighted that China Passenger Car Association's 5.5 million NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales forecasts could be too bullish, as a researcher from North China University of Technology quoted in the article \"predicted that output of batteries and car chips may only be enough for 4.4 million NEVs this year.\"Even if XPeng and its Chinese electric vehicle peers are able to secure sufficient semiconductor chips and batteries to meet market demand, it is likely to come at the expense of higher costs and wider losses. In other words, XPEV's 2022 year-to-date share price correction could be attributed to concerns of below-expectations financial results for the company this year.Thirdly, worries about the potential risk of Chinese stocks delisting from the US might have hurt investor sentiment for XPEV as well.XPeng's share price corrected from $28.65 as of March 9, 2022, to $19.75 as of March 14, 2022. This was linked to news of the SEC listing \"five China-based companies that could be delisted if they don't allow U.S. authorities to review company audits for three straight years\" as reported by Seeking Alpha News on March 11, 2022. XPEV's shares later rebounded strongly to close at $27.53 as of March 16, 2022, after Xinhua News Agency highlighted that \"the Chinese government continues to support various types of companies to list overseas.\" This seems to suggest that China will engage with the US on the topic of Chinese listings in the US and related audit issues.XPEV is in a relatively better position than most other US-listed Chinese companies as its shares are already dual-listed in both the US and Hong Kong. Last week, the White House outlined its plan to cut emissions from vehicles, with President Biden signing an executive order demanding that 50% of all new cars and trucks sold by the end of the decade be powered by electric batteries.</p>\n<p>While that goal is extremely optimistic, and perhaps very unlikely, the adoption of the EV future is going full-speed ahead. The analysts at Jefferies think three top companies are poised to be huge winners. They noted this in a recent research report:</p>\n<blockquote>\n We believe Auto original equipment manufacturers can transition into an EV driven industry of connected products while also operating with less and better allocated capital. We think this could lead to a re-rating of Auto OEMs’ valuation multiples. Investment spending has already started to stabilize, if not decline as OEMs:1) Increasingly re-allocate spending from internal; combustion engine vehicles to fund electric vehicles and software investment.2) Build vertical integration for electrification partly through joint investments off the balance sheet.3) Electric Vehicle development costs benefit from higher modularity and scale.The analyst points out that auto inventories are at record lows; re-building them to dealer/OEM “optimal” levels in 45-60 days would add 1.3 to 2.1 million units, 8-11% of North American output, supporting pricing well into 2022 and structural change.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Jefferies thinks the stocks of these three companies are poised to benefit as well and rates them all at Buy. Remember though that no single analyst call should ever be used as a basis to buy or sell a stock.</p>\n<p>Ford</p>\n<p>The venerable American automaker is poised to be a big EV player, and management has rebuilt the legacy car company in recent years. Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) designs, manufactures, markets and services a range of Ford trucks, cars, sport utility vehicles, electrified vehicles, and Lincoln luxury vehicles worldwide.</p>\n<p>It operates through three segments. The Automotive segment sells Ford and Lincoln vehicles, service parts and accessories through distributors and dealers, as well as through dealerships to commercial fleet customers, daily rental car companies and governments. The Mobility segment designs and builds mobility services, and it provides self-driving systems development services.</p>\n<p>The Ford Credit segment primarily engages in vehicle-related financing and leasing activities to and through automotive dealers. It provides retail installment sale contracts for new and used vehicles and direct financing leases for new vehicles to retail and commercial customers, such as leasing companies, government entities, daily rental companies and fleet customers.</p>\n<p>Ford made a stunning $1.1 billion in adjusted earnings before interest and taxes for the second quarter, a big swing from the same period last year when the company reported a $1.9 billion loss. The company also reported that adjusted earnings for the full year would come in between $9 billion and $10 billion, a massive boost from its prior forecast of around $5.5 billion, and it said sales could rise as much as 30% compared to first-half volumes. These figures were not lost on the Jefferies team.</p>\n<p>Ford, which is investing $22 billion in EVs, has announced that 40% of its vehicles will be electrified by 2030, generating excitement with the recent debut of the F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup.</p>\n<p>The Jefferies price target for Ford stock is $17. That compares with the lower $14.98 Wall Street consensus target and Monday’s closing print of $13.75.</p>\n<p>Lithia Motors</p>\n<p>This stock could be a very good idea for accounts wanting to participate. Lithia Motors Inc. (NYSE: LAD) operates as an automotive retailer in the United States. The company offers new and used vehicles; vehicle financing services; warranties, insurance contracts and vehicle and theft protection services; and automotive repair and maintenance services. It also sells vehicle body and parts. As of February 19, 2021, the company operated through 210 stores. It also offers its products online through 200 websites.</p>\n<p>Jefferies likes where the company is positioned and noted this earlier this summer:</p>\n<p>We see Lithia Motors as best positioned in an environment of increasing EV penetration as the company’s strong history in ICE parts and service operations (10% of sales, 32% of gross profit) gives us confidence in a successful battery power electric vehicle (BEV) ramp, while simultaneously a larger share of vehicle service is likely to shift to better-capitalized franchised dealers regardless of powertrain technology. Additionally, we believe the company’s legacy store base in the rural West/ Northwest is less prone to see near-term BEV disruption from lower maintenance/ service spend, as longer travel distances and limited charging infrastructure are likely headwinds to regional BEV adoption. In “expansion markets,” in central/east and southern states, we expect LAD will continue to gain share as digital selling initiatives expand market penetration well beyond “traditional” stores’ reach.</p>\n<p>With a current growth goal to increase revenue from $13 billion (in 2020) to $50 billion in 2025, we see Lithia Motors aggressive M&A (acquired $7.5 billion in annualized sales in the trailing 12 months) and omnichannel sales initiatives bringing operating expertise and online selling reach to a national scale, likely at the expense of smaller incumbents.</p>\n<p>Investors receive a 0.39% dividend. Jefferies has a $406 price target, but the consensus target is up at $455.55. Lithia Motors stock closed on Monday at $363.08.</p>\n<p>Tesla</p>\n<p>The obvious starting point for investors is the EV pioneer. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) designs, develops, manufactures, leases and sells electric vehicles, and energy-generation and storage systems in the United States, China and elsewhere. Its Automotive segment offers electric vehicles, as well as sells automotive regulatory credits. The Energy Generation and Storage segment engages in the design, manufacture, installation, sale and leasing of solar energy generation and energy storage products, as well as related services, to residential, commercial and industrial customers and utilities.</p>\n<p>Jefferies said this about the EV giant earlier this year:</p>\n<blockquote>\n For the past decade, Tesla has led the way in building charging infrastructure, which was particularly critical to position EVs as a true alternative to ICE vehicles in terms of range and long-distance driving. Opening the Tesla network to other brands has been a recurring topic, in the US and more recently in Germany.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Jefferies upgraded Tesla stock to Buy this week, also lifting its price target to $850 from $775. The consensus target is just $652.52, but the shares were last seen trading at $688.72.</p>\n<p>Many expect the EV market to dominate by as early as 2035. The analysts at Jefferies think three top companies are poised to be huge winners. They noted this in a recent research report:\n\n We believe Auto original equipment manufacturers can transition into an EV driven industry of connected products while also operating with less and better allocated capital. We think this could lead to a re-rating of Auto OEMs’ valuation multiples. Investment spending has already started to stabilize, if not decline as OEMs:1) Increasingly re-allocate spending from internal; combustion engine vehicles to fund electric vehicles and software investment.2) Build vertical integration for electrification partly through joint investments off the balance sheet.3) Electric Vehicle development costs benefit from higher modularity and scale.The analyst points out that auto inventories are at record lows; re-building them to dealer/OEM “optimal” levels in 45-60 days would add 1.3 to 2.1 million units, 8-11% of North American output, supporting pricing well into 2022 and structural change.\n\nJefferies thinks the stocks of these three companies are poised to benefit as well and rates them all at Buy. Lithia Motors Inc. (NYSE: LAD) operates as an automotive retailer in the United States. The company offers new and used vehicles; vehicle financing services; warranties, insurance contracts and vehicle and theft protection services; and automotive repair and maintenance services. It also sells vehicle body and parts. As of February 19, 2021, the company operated through 210 stores. It also offers its products online through 200 websites.\nJefferies likes where the company is positioned and noted this earlier this summer:\nWe see Lithia Motors as best positioned in an environment of increasing EV penetration as the company’s strong history in ICE parts and service operations (10% of sales, 32% of gross profit) gives us confidence in a successful battery power electric vehicle (BEV) ramp, while simultaneously a larger share of vehicle service is likely to shift to better-capitalized franchised dealers regardless of powertrain technology. Additionally, we believe the company’s legacy store base in the rural West/ Northwest is less prone to see near-term BEV disruption from lower maintenance/ service spend, as longer travel distances and limited charging infrastructure are likely headwinds to regional BEV adoption. If you recall, a number of tech-forward Chinese companies have been under regulatory duress lately. Indeed, several Chinese companies, including Nio and XPeng, have been the subject of delisting fears after failing to comply with U.S. auditing laws.However, Nio provided investors insight into its current phase in its regulatory snafu. As per the press release, the company is currently in violation of an HFCAA rule by using an auditor “whose working paper cannot be inspected or investigated completely by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).”Nio attempted to reassure investors that it is exploring potential solutions, highlighting its recent March secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.Unfortunately, the company may have failed to persuade investors as NIO stock eyes a nearly 10% drop this morning. The negative headwinds hurting XPEV's shares such as investor style shift, supply chain disruptions for the Chinese automotive industry and concerns over the potential delisting of US-listed companies are likely to persist for a while. With its valuations reflecting most of the negatives after the sell-down in recent months, a Hold rating for XPeng is appropriate.</p><p><b>XPEV Stock Key Metrics</b></p><p>XPEV describes itself as "a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs" which targets "technology-savvy middle-class consumers" in its press releases. XPeng will report its Q4 2021 financial results on March 28, 2022, so I will review the company's most recent Q3 2021 financial metrics to see how the company has performed.</p><p>XPeng issued its Q3 2021 financial results media release on November 23, 2021 before the market opened, and this was well received by the market with XPEV's shares rising by +8% from $47.39 of November 22, 2021 to cross the $50 mark and close at $51.30 as of November 23, 2021. In the next week, XPeng's stock price gained further to reach a 52-week high of $56.45 on December 1, 2021, during intra-day trading.</p><p>The company's revenue expanded by +187% YoYin Q3 2021, and this was +9% better than what the market had anticipated. XPEV's vehicle deliveries almost tripled YoY from 8,578 units in Q3 2020 to 25,666 units in Q3 2021, and this exceeded the higher end of the company's earlier vehicle deliveries guidance of 23,000-25,000 units. Looking forward, XPeng expects to achieve vehicle deliveries of 35,500 units (mid-point of guidance) in the fourth quarter of 2021, which would be equivalent to a +174% YoY increase. XPEV also guided that its revenue should jump by +156% YoY to RMB7.3 billion (mid-point of guidance) in Q4 2021, which was +26% higher than the sell-side's consensus fourth-quarter top line estimate at the time of the Q3 earnings release.</p><p>But the good times did not last, as I highlight in the subsequent section.</p><p><b>Why Has XPeng Stock Dropped?</b></p><p>XPeng's stock price has fallen roughly by half since the start of the year. XPEV's shares fell from $50.27 as of January 3, 2022 (first trading day of the year) to $24.97 as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>In my opinion, there are three factors that have led to the severe decline in XPEV's share price.</p><p>Firstly, XPeng has suffered from a substantial valuation de-rating.</p><p>Investors have been rotating away from high (revenue) growth, loss-making stocks to profitable companies which are returning capital to shareholders via dividends or buybacks. This shift in investor preferences is aligned with expectations of rising interest rates in the future, which tend to be negative for high-growth companies.</p><p>Specifically, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple has compressed from above 8 times in late-November 2021 to 2.8 times as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>Secondly, there are concerns that the revenue growth and margins of Chinese electric vehicle companies like XPEV could disappoint the market in 2022.</p><p>Market consensus already expects XPeng's top line expansion to slow from +252% in fiscal 2021 to +97% in FY 2022. Besides a higher base for comparison in 2021, it is possible that supply chain disruptions could be a drag on Chinese electric vehicle sales in 2022. A recent March 11, 2021 <i>South China Morning Post</i> article highlighted that China Passenger Car Association's 5.5 million NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales forecasts could be too bullish, as a researcher from North China University of Technology quoted in the article "predicted that output of batteries and car chips may only be enough for 4.4 million NEVs this year."</p><p>Even if XPeng and its Chinese electric vehicle peers are able to secure sufficient semiconductor chips and batteries to meet market demand, it is likely to come at the expense of higher costs and wider losses. In other words, XPEV's 2022 year-to-date share price correction could be attributed to concerns of below-expectations financial results for the company this year.</p><p>Thirdly, worries about the potential risk of Chinese stocks delisting from the US might have hurt investor sentiment for XPEV as well.</p><p>XPeng's share price corrected from $28.65 as of March 9, 2022, to $19.75 as of March 14, 2022. This was linked to news of the SEC listing "five China-based companies that could be delisted if they don't allow U.S. authorities to review company audits for three straight years" as reported by <i>Seeking Alpha News</i> on March 11, 2022. XPEV's shares later rebounded strongly to close at $27.53 as of March 16, 2022, after <i>Xinhua News Agency</i> highlighted that "the Chinese government continues to support various types of companies to list overseas." This seems to suggest that China will engage with the US on the topic of Chinese listings in the US and related audit issues.</p><p>XPEV is in a relatively better position than most other US-listed Chinese companies as its shares are already dual-listed in both the US and Hong Kong. But assuming that XPeng is eventually compelled to delist from the US market in a few years' time, it is still a negative for the company's shares. The Hong Kong equity market or other stock markets for that matter are inferior to the US market in terms of liquidity and valuations. If XPEV ends up being solely listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company loses an important channel for further financing, and its valuations might further de-rate to be in line with the broader Hong Kong market.</p><p>In the next section, I assess XPeng's stock price outlook.</p><p><b>Can XPEV Stock Rebound To $50?</b></p><p>It is challenging for XPeng's share price to recover back to $50. Based on my calculations, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple will have to expand to 6.6 times for its shares to be valued at $50.</p><p>I am of the view that a significant rebound for XPEV's shares in the near term driven by valuation multiple expansion is unlikely.
