The three cruise ship giants in Royal Caribbean(NYSE:RCL), Carnival(NYSE:CCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line(NYSE:NCLH) have all seen their shares tumble in recent days. Adding to their woes, the Centers for Disease Control came out with a warning to “avoid cruise travel, regardless of vaccination status.”According to recent reports, 90 cruise ships have reported coronavirus cases. Moreover, roughly 5,000 cases have emerged from cruise shipssailing from Dec. 15-29 last year. In contrast, only 162 cases were reported during the first weeks of December.The big three cruise operators lost a lot of money in 2020and continued struggle last year. Moreover, their outlook looks murky at this stage for 2022, which is why it’s best to avoid them. Having said that, let’s look at these cruise stocks in a little more detail to understand the bear case.Carnival (NYSE:CCL)Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE:RCL)Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE:NCLH)Cruise Stocks To Sell: Carnival (CCL)Most investors will have thought that with Carnival’s amazing second-half booking performance, the worst of the pandemic was over. However, cancellations have increased significantly, with omicron on the rise, and bookings have dropped for the operator. Load factors are below historical levels for the first half of 2022, which will continue to pressure the company’s financial flexibility.Perhaps the biggest problem for Carnival is its massive debt load.It tripled its debt during the pandemic, significantly more than its peers. Moreover, with the lack of revenue, it burns $2 billion per quarter. Its debt is roughly 2.2 times its equity, which is more than 410% higher than its 10-year median.It’s clear that Carnival will have a heck of a time deleveraging its balance sheet and reinstating dividends in the next few years. Despite this, CCL stock trades at a whopping 12.8 times sales.Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL)Similar to its peers, Royal Caribbean Cruises’ debt load has virtually crippled its flexibility. With a colossal debt balance of over $20 billion and accompanying interest expenses, RCL’s cash flow generation will be severely impeded for the foreseeable future. Additionally, it will have to issue more equity and debt to maintain its operations.Currently, RCL is burning through more than $1 billion in cash flow annually. Moreover, as per its recent quarter, revenues were down 85.7% from the prior-year period. Future free cash flows are likely to be gobbled up by debt and interest payments.With omicron wreaking havoc, a top-line recovery seems unlikely at this point, but RCL stock still trades at an unfathomable valuation. The stock is exceptionally overvalued with a price-to-sales multiple of more than 34x.Cruise Stocks To Sell: Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH)Norwegian Cruise Lines plans to return to full capacity by April this year. However, with recent developments, that seems unlikely at this juncture. It ended its third quarter with a debt load of $10.5 billion, a massive increase from the $6 billion on its books before the coronavirus crisis.Furthermore, during the third quarter, the company burned through $825 million in losses. This includes $161 million in interest expenses. Additionally, its average cash burn during the third quarter came in at $275 million. That number is expected to rise to $350 million, driven primarily by relaunches of additional vessels. Moreover, the cruise operator has multiple projects in the pipeline, which will require a boatload of debt for it to take up.Capital expenditures are expected to be over $4 billion for 2022 and 2023, and close to $500 million for maintaining its existing fleet. More than $23 billion of Cincinnati Financial's assets are invested in fixed maturity investments and equity securities. Cincinnati's equities portfolio is impacted by changes in market prices and the company's largest equity holding is Apple, so a higher-rate environment may not be so great for some stocks in the portfolio.But the equities portfolio is also concentrated with sectors that hedge inflation better, like financials and energy. Also, as management noted in the company's recent regulatory filing, a 1% instantaneous move in short- and long-term interest rates would grow the fair value of the company's fixed-maturity portfolio by nearly 5%, and enable the company to invest cash flow in securities with higher yields. Cincinnati Financial has now raised its dividend for 61 straight years and has a respectable dividend yield of 2.2%.2. Commerce BancsharesCommerce Bancshares (NASDAQ:CBSH) is a nearly $34.5 billion asset bank based in Kansas City, Missouri. This regional bank runs a good business, generating a return on average common equity of more than 16% through the first nine months of the year and a 1.65% return on average assets in the same time period. Return on equity shows the technical profit the bank generated on shareholders' equity, with a 10% return considered strong for most banks. Return on assets shows how well management used assets to generate profits, with a 1% return considered strong.In its latest quarterly regulatory filing for the third quarter, management estimates that a gradual 1% rise in interest rates over the next year would result in more than a 5% bump in net interest income over the next year, which is what the bank makes on loans and securities after covering its cost of funding. Commerce has increased its dividend for 53 straight years and has a dividend yield of nearly 1.5%, which is probably better than it sounds considering the bank trades at more than 250% its tangible book value (what a bank would be worth if it were liquidated). Because it trades on the over-the-counter exchange, Farmers & Merchants is also not as liquid as the other two stocks mentioned above. During the pandemic, tens of millions joined Netflix (ticker: NFLX) even as price increases took hold. Studio production froze for a while, lowering costs. Free cash flow turned solidly positive, until the company committed itself to billions more in content spending.</p><p>Meanwhile, we got way ahead of ourselves on the stock, at one moment in November bidding it up to $700. By &#34;we&#34; I mean not me, because I didn&#39;t buy the stock, but really, me a little, because I contribute to an index fund that mindlessly scoops it up at any price. Anyhow, that was a nutty price, briefly valuing the company at $318 billion. At the time, 2024 free cash flow was pegged at $5.6 billion -- a highly theoretical number that was based on the belief that scale would overtake spending, allowing Netflix to turn on the profitability.</p><p>But then Netflix&#39;s subscriber growth slowed to a trickle during the fourth quarter, and this past week we learned that it turned slightly negative in the first quarter. It&#39;s still positive if we adjust for turning off service to Russia, but not by nearly enough to justify the stock price. Anyway, Netflix predicts greater subscriber losses during the second quarter. Shares fell to $216.</p><p>The key here for the tempted is to not get Ackman-ed. Hedge fund investor Bill Ackman spent more than $1 billion on Netflix after the January plunge at what he called an &#34;attractive valuation.&#34; Then he sold this past week at a $400 million loss, writing to shareholders that growth has gotten &#34;extremely difficult to predict.&#34; He also wrote that he wouldn&#39;t be surprised if Netflix ended up being an excellent investment from here -- hedgies are going to hedge.</p><p>Netflix has a plan to return to growth. It estimates that there are 100 million viewers free-riding off shared passwords. If you&#39;re logging on to BoJackHorseman1980&#39;s guest profile to avoid putting up $10 a month for a basic account, I&#39;m guessing you&#39;re a price-sensitive consumer, and those are worth good money to advertisers. So, Netflix plans to add a lower-priced tier with commercials.</p><p>That&#39;s a sensible plan, says Tim Nollen at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MQG.AU\">Macquarie</a> Research, who pulled a reverse-Ackman by presciently downgrading Netflix to Underperform from Neutral after its January report. Discovery+, for one, has shown that cheap streaming plans with ads can bring in higher average revenue per user than pricier plans without ads. But Netflix says the shift will take up to two years. Maybe it&#39;s just setting beatable expectations, but creating an ad business is also a lot of work, says Nollen. &#34;You don&#39;t just hire a salesperson and start doing it,&#34; he says. &#34;There&#39;s a lot more infrastructure and technological capability and data management and all sorts of things that you have to do.&#34;</p><p>That $5.6 billion forecast in November for Netflix&#39;s 2024 free cash flow has now been trimmed to $3.5 billion, and it remains theoretical, but plenty feasible, in light of the company&#39;s current revenue base of around $30 billion a year. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WBD\">Warner Bros. Discovery</a> (WBD), the recent spinoff from AT&amp;T <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/T\">$(T)$</a> that includes HBO Max, is expected to generate $3.8 billion in free cash this year on $12.6 billion in revenue. Nollen says to buy that one, but he&#39;s staying bearish on Netflix for now. &#34;If I had a good sense that the inflection was coming,&#34; he says, &#34;that would probably get me more interested in the stock.&#34;</p><p>Walt Disney is crushing it financially at its U.S. theme parks. And its streaming services are growing nicely. But its stock is the worst-performing member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the past year, losing 33%.</p><p>One reason is that Netflix&#39;s struggles have investors tempering their long-term expectations for streaming in general. Another is that Disney is spending richly on content, which has turned it for now into a thinly profitable growth company, and such companies tend to get marked down as interest rates rise.</p><p>There&#39;s also a Florida showdown. This past week, lawmakers there passed a measure to eliminate Disney World&#39;s longstanding right to effectively provide its own municipal services and oversight, which opens more questions on logistics and costs than it answers.</p><p>Disney, siding with upset workers, had run afoul of Florida&#39;s Republican lawmakers and governor by speaking out against a new law that restricts &#34;instruction&#34; on matters of sexual preference and gender identity to &#34;age-appropriate&#34; discussions in older grades. It also halted political contributions, which in Florida had gone mostly to Republicans.</p><p>Critics say the new law is vaguely worded and pretends to fix a problem that doesn&#39;t exist in order to sow political division. Fans say it combats &#34;woke&#34; overreach and gives parents more control over schooling.</p><p>J.P. The duo rose 2.7 and 7.1% respectively.</p><p>Netflix Inc plunged 35.1%, its largest one-day fall in over a decade, after it blamed inflation, the Ukraine war and fierce competition for the subscriber decline and predicted deeper losses ahead.</p><p>The ripple effects were felt both by financial technology names and companies whose fortunes were seen to have been boosted by pandemic trends such as lockdown measures.</p><p>Streaming peers Walt Disney, Roku and Warner Bros Discovery  all dropped more than 5.5%, while stay-at-home darlings <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a> Video Communications, Doordash and Peloton Interactive saw their shares fall between 6% and 11.3%.</p><p>Suffering financials included <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings Inc and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SQ\">Block</a> Inc, which both fell more than 8.5%. Marqeta Inc and SoFi Technologies Inc declined 5.6% and 6.2% respectively.</p><p>&#34;Once profits move so far, it becomes harder to get that next little bit of growth, and it&#39;s harder to obtain it in the late cycle,&#34; said Jason Pride, chief investment officer of private wealth at Glenmede.</p><p>&#34;I think the market is beginning to comprehend that, and will need to comprehend that as we go through the year.&#34;</p><p>Market-leading technology and growth stocks have struggled this year as investors worry that rising interest rates will dent their future earnings. The Nasdaq is down nearly 14% so far this year, while the benchmark S&amp;P 500 is down 6.4%.</p><p>Overall, the earnings season has started on a strong note. Of the 60 companies in the S&amp;P 500 index that have reported results so far, 80% exceeded profit expectations, as per Refinitiv data. Typically, 66% beat estimates.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average    rose 249.59 points, or 0.71%, to 35,160.79, the S&amp;P 500    lost 2.76 points, or 0.06%, to 4,459.45 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 166.59 points, or 1.22%, to 13,453.07.</p><p>The communication services sector declined 4.1%, although eight of the 11 major S&amp;P 500 sectors gained, led by the real estate index which posted its best finish since Jan. 4. The consumer staples benchmark was just behind it, climbing to a second-straight record close.</p><p>Meanwhile, the latest data points on the Federal Reserve&#39;s monetary policy tightening plans were released in the afternoon.</p><p>Its &#34;Beige Book&#34; showed the U.S. economy expanded at a moderate pace from February through early April, while San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly said she believes the case for a half-percentage-point interest rate hike next month is &#34;complete&#34;.</p><p>The yield on 10-year Treasury note  receded to 2.85% after a blistering rally that pushed it close to the key 3% level earlier in the session.</p><p>Tesla Inc fell 5%, but was trading higher after posting record deliveries and higher revenue in its first-quarter results after the close.</p><p>Investors had been concerned about the electric automaker&#39;s ability to meet its ambitious 2022 delivery target after its biggest factory in Shanghai was shut as part of the city&#39;s COVID-19 lockdown.</p><p>United Airlines Holdings Inc gained 1.2%, helping the S&amp;P 1500 Airlines index to a sixth advance in the past seven sessions.
