Winning.</p><p>However, <i>we were also wrong</i>, because we thought the bottom was put in after it reset back to trade just about at its direct public offering price. <i>We got that part wrong</i>.</p><p>While we get the win on the trade, we recognize that investors are getting creamed. Unfortunately this is a trader&#39;s market right now, and we have had a short bias the last few months, with selective long-term plays only in the most quality of names. We hate to see investors lose money, and we know it can be painful. The question is, what can we expect going forward. Is all hope lost here? We keep hearing that that technology stocks, especially those that are potential game-changing names, are on sale. But are they?</p><p>Names like Palantir are indeed often extremely expensive in the early stages. You really cannot value them on an earnings basis because there are no or very little earnings. Palantir also has a massive dilution problem, which means consistent positive EPS gets kicked further down the road. We think Palantir has a lot of potential, but this market is beyond unforgiving to those companies that do not make money or have sky high valuations. It does not matter at all how much promise they have; the stocks are all down and down massively. What can you do? We think there are three possible courses of action in the disaster that has been Palantir, all of which are correct.</p><p>The first option is the easiest, and perhaps a &#34;cop out&#34; for lack of a better term. But that option is to simply avoid the stock altogether in favor of deep value names offering some yield protection and are still managing to grow. We would not short down here at $7-$8, as the stock really has been pounded. The risk-reward is not favorable on a short after all of the action. So, you could do nothing and just watch it. If you own the stock, that would be a simple hold then. You could consider selling some upside calls on big bounces to lower cost basis if you choose.</p><p>The second course of action is in our wheelhouse. And that is to trade the name. Right now, we think that $7 level is a buy for gains to be sold at $8-$9, maybe $10. But this market environment is not going to get any better for innovative tech in the near-term. You could then consider some put options or mild shorts if the stock does enjoy a sizable bounce from the oversold conditions.</p><p>The third option is likely where a lot of readers are interested, and that is simply invest in the name, not obsess over the day-to-day tick in price. Add selectively to a well-rounded portfolio to improve cost basis, and put faith in management that it can deliver on growing the business profitably without diluting shareholders into oblivion. Right now this is a tall order for this company and management. While operationally the company is growing sufficiently, management has some credibility issues. What <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> has to do is determine if what the company offers will solve enough headaches for customers that eventually the growing sales turn into sustained and growing profits.</p><p>For years, Palantir may lose money or breakeven. Of course, the theory goes that companies like this will lose money as they spend to attract customers and build their moat. They invest heavily in their growth while seeing revenues increase dramatically. And as we know, Palantir is seeing revenues grow tremendously.</p><p>So, what is our take? We think you wait for the next down day in the stock. It has enjoyed a sizable relief bounce from the lows, but we believe the stock will retest these lows as the economy continues to worsen, rates are going up, and markets struggle. We would be both traders and investors at $7. The risk could be that Palantir&#39;s growth fades and the company never really transforms the world. New competitors could emerge. Dilution could continue so long that positive EPS becomes out of reach without future buybacks. We hate to say it but frankly, it is not uncommon for stocks in seemingly innovative companies to wither away to sub $1 then eventually delist because the company failed to grow and deliver on its plans.</p><p>Although we were wrong in that bottom call, operationally we are seeing some positive signs. Internal metrics improve year-after-year for Palantir and we see no reason why the ongoing growth will not eventually lead to real profits, other than dilution. We admit and accept that so many great companies start out losing money. While the Russia/Ukraine conflict was a seemingly bullish development as it highlights a need to mine data for intelligence, some see a limited benefit for Palantir. For the long-term investor, we like a buy in this stock on weakness that sends the stock lower. While it will still be expensive, even for high growth tech, it will be much more reasonable compared to a few months ago. And it is not like the company is bleeding out and losing money hand over first. Palantir is breaking even and making some money some quarters.</p><h2>Palantir&#39;s Government and Commercial sectors showing growth</h2><p>In the just reported quarter, performance was strong on the top line and ahead of consensus estimates. Total revenue grew 31% year-over-year to $446 million, beating estimates by almost $3 million. However, its profitability was lower than expected by $0.02, and worse, guidance was less than consensus. That crushed the stock. But that said, both segments are doing well.</p><p>Palantir has two reporting segments: both the government and commercial segments. The commercial revenue stream continues to grow rapidly, while government results are likely to get a big boost following international strife. While the war in Ukraine may or may not lead to more business the company has invested in itself to grow sales. There are some concerns with backlog, but as we previously covered, Palantir has been hiring.</p><p>Palantir has expanded its sales team and they have been working to secure new orders. However, the Government revenues have slowed their growth somewhat. Deceleration of revenue growth is definitely a negative for a company like this that does not enjoy high earnings. They rose 16% from last year, and the company added a total of 40 net new customers in the quarter, which is very positive, 3 on the government side and 37 on the commercial side. We think it is important to note that the commercial space is doing well. The commercial revenue is expanding rapidly, increasing 132% in 2021, and here in Q1, it rose 54% year-over-year.</p><p>Palantir is seeing very positive momentum in its margins as well. Positive movement in margins is important in a software company as it really highlights strengths, or weaknesses, in the way it distributes its products. Palantir is delivering. Adjusted gross margin was 81%. Contribution margin was 57%. First quarter adjusted income from operations, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes was $117 million, representing an adjusted operating margin of 26%, ahead of management&#39;s prior guidance of 23%. This is positive.</p><h2>Palantir is slightly profitable, for now</h2><p>Despite the pull back now to single-digits, the stock is actually still expensive, like so many other growth tech names. The company lost $39 million in the quarter operationally, but adjusted income from operations was $117 million. The company is still free cash flow positive. Adjusted free cash flow was $30 million for the quarter. That said, the company was profitable at a $0.02 adjusted EPS bottom line figure, but this missed estimated by $0.02, so that is a negative, and another reason the stock is down.</p><p>We say the company is profitable for now for two reasons. First, there is a ton of stock based-compensation. This has been discussed in the past but we have to reiterate that we like that management has acknowledged that it is a problem. Still, it is ongoing, and every share that is issued waters down the ability to increase EPS. In short, shareholders could be diluted into losses. The second reason is that although there is growth internationally, as well as big gains in the U.S., we could see the government and companies slash spending if there is a recession. Each week, things seem to get worse in terms of how expensive things are, and corporate earnings reports continue to highlight the tremendous pressure inflation is putting on them. While Palantir&#39;s technology should help governments and businesses alike operate more efficiently, and therefore more profitably, we could see reduced spending on services like this.</p><h2>Still expensive</h2><p>On the valuation front, the stock is still pricey. Sure, looking at traditional price-to-earnings is futile, but if you did you would see a stock at like 50X. Very pricey. Perhaps the more appropriate measure is the price-to-sales ratio, but not only is this still very high, the market has basically said it is no longer willing to pay for sky high multiples. Keep that in mind. At 9X sales, the stock is much cheaper than it has ever been, but it is still not &#34;cheap&#34;. We would highlight that the PEG ratio is reasonable and we like the cash flow metrics.</p><h2>The outlook is murky</h2><p>The biggest concern right now is not valuation. It is not dilution. It is not the &#34;overall market.&#34; The largest issue is a slowdown in performance. The Q2 guidance was pretty weak. The company perhaps is underpromising to overdeliver, by management guided to a base case of $470 million in revenue. This was below consensus of $484 million. However in the release management noted that &#34;there is a wide range of potential upside to [the] guidance.&#34; The one positive factor to highlight is that Palantir continues to see 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.</p><h2>Take home</h2><p>The company operates with no debt and has nice positive free cash flow. They are poised to benefit from strong secular trends in big data and using analytics to improve operations. In the short-term, it is painful. Long-term, minus the dilution issues, there is a lot of promise here for future profits. The customer growth is impressive as is the revenue growth. While the stock has been a disaster, man analysts have price targets implying massive upside. We continue to see ongoing rapid growth in the U.S., but do caution that a big economic slowdown could hurt government and commercial spending. While the war in Ukraine may or may not lead to more business the company has invested in itself to grow sales. There are some concerns with backlog, but as we previously covered, Palantir has been hiring.Palantir has expanded its sales team and they have been working to secure new orders. However, the Government revenues have slowed their growth somewhat. Deceleration of revenue growth is definitely a negative for a company like this that does not enjoy high earnings. They rose 16% from last year, and the company added a total of 40 net new customers in the quarter, which is very positive, 3 on the government side and 37 on the commercial side. We think it is important to note that the commercial space is doing well. The commercial revenue is expanding rapidly, increasing 132% in 2021, and here in Q1, it rose 54% year-over-year.Palantir is seeing very positive momentum in its margins as well. Positive movement in margins is important in a software company as it really highlights strengths, or weaknesses, in the way it distributes its products. Palantir is delivering. Adjusted gross margin was 81%. Contribution margin was 57%. First quarter adjusted income from operations, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes was $117 million, representing an adjusted operating margin of 26%, ahead of management's prior guidance of 23%. This is positive.Palantir is slightly profitable, for nowDespite the pull back now to single-digits, the stock is actually still expensive, like so many other growth tech names. The company lost $39 million in the quarter operationally, but adjusted income from operations was $117 million. The company is still free cash flow positive. Adjusted free cash flow was $30 million for the quarter. That said, the company was profitable at a $0.02 adjusted EPS bottom line figure, but this missed estimated by $0.02, so that is a negative, and another reason the stock is down.We say the company is profitable for now for two reasons. First, there is a ton of stock based-compensation. This has been discussed in the past but we have to reiterate that we like that management has acknowledged that it is a problem. Still, it is ongoing, and every share that is issued waters down the ability to increase EPS. In short, shareholders could be diluted into losses. The second reason is that although there is growth internationally, as well as big gains in the U.S., we could see the government and companies slash spending if there is a recession. Each week, things seem to get worse in terms of how expensive things are, and corporate earnings reports continue to highlight the tremendous pressure inflation is putting on them. While Palantir's technology should help governments and businesses alike operate more efficiently, and therefore more profitably, we could see reduced spending on services like this.Still expensiveOn the valuation front, the stock is still pricey. Sure, looking at traditional price-to-earnings is futile, but if you did you would see a stock at like 50X. Very pricey. Perhaps the more appropriate measure is the price-to-sales ratio, but not only is this still very high, the market has basically said it is no longer willing to pay for sky high multiples. Keep that in mind. At 9X sales, the stock is much cheaper than it has ever been, but it is still not \"cheap\". We would highlight that the PEG ratio is reasonable and we like the cash flow metrics.The outlook is murkyThe biggest concern right now is not valuation. It is not dilution. It is not the \"overall market.\" The largest issue is a slowdown in performance. The Q2 guidance was pretty weak. The company perhaps is underpromising to overdeliver, by management guided to a base case of $470 million in revenue. This was below consensus of $484 million. However in the release management noted that \"there is a wide range of potential upside to [the] guidance.\" The one positive factor to highlight is that Palantir continues to see 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.Take homeThe company operates with no debt and has nice positive free cash flow. They are poised to benefit from strong secular trends in big data and using analytics to improve operations. In the short-term, it is painful. Long-term, minus the dilution issues, there is a lot of promise here for future profits. The customer growth is impressive as is the revenue growth. While the stock has been a disaster, man analysts have price targets implying massive upside. We continue to see ongoing rapid growth in the U.S., but do caution that a big economic slowdown could hurt government and commercial spending. Then there are times where for years the company loses money, but the internal metrics improve year after year and growth eventually is so strong profits roll in. Every great tech giant you know started out losing money. Picking winners and losers is easier said than done in the long term, but the key in our opinion is to look at what problems they solve, who their customers are, the growth, and to a lesser degree, valuation. One of the most controversial stocks in the market is Palantir Technologies (PLTR). The stock direct listed in 2020 and took off during the major tech rally into 2021. But in 2021, the stock began to fade, and today is back under $12. Has it come down enough? We think so, for the long-term investor. Even for traders, the potential of a dead cat bounce near-term is highly likely, but in the near-term, the stock is still expensive, even for high growth tech, but is much more reasonable compared to a few months ago. Thecompany just reported earnings, and the growth remains on track. The company is scratching the surface of profitability and is free cash flow positive. Customer count is growing and retention is strong. In short, we believe you can finally start buying here again.</p><p>What goes up doesn&#39;t always come down, but Palantir stock sure did</p><p>Take a look at the chart of Palantir since going live on the stock market in 2020:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46ca7504520c5dc53ff23d8f5a8d3a83\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"289\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>BAD BEAT Investing</p><p>As you can see, the stock rocketed to all-time highs in February of 2021 and traded a bit sideways in the 20s for a few months before cratering in the fall and of 2021 into 2022 with the threat of rate hikes decimating the high revenue growth, little to no earnings tech. Palantir fits this bill pretty well. But you can look at the chart of many innovation names that are seeing massive revenue growth but make no money. They all have gotten crushed in the last few months. While Palantir stock has a number of risks, we think you can finally start to buy.</p><p>The play</p><p>Target entry 1: $11.95-$12.15 40% of position</p><p>Target entry 2: $10.80-$11.00 60% of position</p><p>Stop loss: $9</p><p>Target exit: $15</p><p>Options recommendations: With premiums high in this volatile name selling puts is a strong strategy for income and/or defining entry. Consider the March 18th, 2022 $12 puts for $0.80-$0.85 in premium. Call option buying is pricey, but you can consider the August 19th, 2022 $14 strike for $1.60, then $1.20.</p><p>Discussion</p><p>Palantir brings in its revenue under two reporting segments. These are the government and commercial segments. Its commercial revenue stream has grown at a rapid rate over the last year, while government results and the outlook have been a bit mixed. To improve sales, Palantir has expanded its sales team and they have been working to secure new orders. In our opinion, this paid off.</p><p>Performance was strong andahead of consensus estimates. Total revenue grew 34% year-over-year to $433 million, beating estimates by almost $15 million. The commercial revenue continues to grow at a great pace, rising 132% in 2021, and up 47% in Q4 vs last year. While the Government revenues have slowed their growth somewhat, they still rose 26% from last year, and the company added a total of 34 net new customers in the quarter across both segments.</p><p>Now, here is the thing. The company is just barely starting to make money. That means the stock is expensive, like so many other growth tech names. More on that in a moment. While the company lost $59 million, adjusted income from operations was $124 million, while the company is free cash flow positive, seeing $104 million in the quarter. That is a big positive. For the year, adjusted free cash flow was $424 million. We love free cash flow. This is a very big positive. The company squeaked out a $0.02 adjusted EPS result. It is something.</p><p>Now, as for the valuation, it is often best to look at price to sales ratios for high-growth tech. Take a look at Seeking Alpha&#39;sgradeson these measures:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8f7343d2292c60fa673f2cfd23e2ea66\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"574\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p>A bit laughable really, as all high-growth tech seemingly have &#39;failing&#39; grades, but the metrics are what matters. At 18X sales, the stock is still expensive, factoring in the drop in shares to under $12, and we are still pricey at 15X-16X, but this is much more reasonable compared to when the stock was in the $30s. 90X FWD EPS, well, the company is working to get to being profitable, but we do like the hidden positive of a 1.0X PEG ratio. In terms ofgrowth,these measures look a lot better with 38% FWD revenue growth expected, and 350% levered free cash flow growth going forward. These fundamentals continue to improve for the company.</p><p>Of course, the stock is still not without risk. First, even after the precipitous drop, shares are pricey as we mentioned. The company also could see government slash spending in tough times, though, some would argue that their technology saves the government money. We see the commercials sales growing though a recession could lead to reduced spend on tech companies like Palantir that try and help solve problems for companies.</p><p>Perhaps one of the biggest issues many people have with this company is the unrelenting dilution that has been occurring. Alex Karp addressed this on the conference call:</p><blockquote><i>Thank you. And I really appreciate you, investors. Thanks for investing and the faith you have in us. Okay. So there&#39;s like the simple version, which I think it&#39;s like - so there&#39;s really - there&#39;s stock-based comp and there&#39;s dilution. Dilution thing, that&#39;s a red herring. We&#39;re not issuing a lot of new shares, I think it&#39;s like in the $9 million range. And so it would be a little coy of me to say that&#39;s like no issue, move on.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>The thing to understand about Palantir and then I want to just take this like, it&#39;s actually not the result of the DPO, it&#39;s the result of the fact that we were completely focused on building product. We had no earthly idea we were going to DPO like right before we did it. And so most companies are quite frankly built so that the - when analysts look at it, the primary customer of most software companies is not the client, it&#39;s the software analyst.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>So it&#39;s like we, obviously, our primary clients are our clients. which doesn&#39;t mean - and then now we&#39;re thinking about how do we expose the data in a way that people on the outside like you and professional analysts and others can look at the data and get a better sense of what&#39;s tracking, what&#39;s not tracking. But the primary source of a lot of these like questions really comes down to look, we built the company to support the U.S. warfighter primarily and then do - take dual, use it for the glory of humanity, particular humanity in the West. That was our idea. And because our primary client was not what someone had a hedge fund would think, we didn&#39;t actually think of these things from inception. And so now there&#39;s a process of normalization.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>You&#39;re just going to see that in going forward on these calls just like how do you normalize, how do you provide data that people are going to look at, how do you provide data that people can understand that they&#39;re used to seeing, while simultaneously staying true to what our mission is. It&#39;s like our primary clients are the people we&#39;re serving. We&#39;re in full align with them. And that&#39;s why we survive even with the nascent sales force. You can get things to double, which is in sync.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>So then you get to stock-based comp, which is like, okay, so - and there&#39;s 2 parts of it. Of course, IRI people kind of don&#39;t want me to do any kind of forward-looking math, but if you&#39;re smart enough to invest in talent, you&#39;re smart enough to figure out. There&#39;s essentially - there&#39;s the - how are we comping people, and there will be a normalization that will get us into a range where you would see in a software company within the next 18 months, latest 2 years. But there&#39;s essentially - and that&#39;s going to take a little time. It is going to happen, because it&#39;s also very much linked to another question, which is how do you actually run the company so it&#39;s profitable someday on a GAAP basis, not stripping out comp. And that was also within eyesight.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>And those are our goals for Palantir because same reason we have no debt. The same reason we have $2.3 billion on our balance sheet. This is a company built for bad times. Bad times means strong finances internally. And that means at some point, you have to be GAAP profitable. You can&#39;t be GAAP profitable if you&#39;re diluting people or - correctly your stock based comp is totally - is not in conformity with other companies.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>So you&#39;re seeing a normalization. This will change. It will change in the relatively near future. It will be linked to other things that we believe are important for Palantir like having a company that thrives in bad times. And we are - bad times are very good for Palantir because we build products that are robust, that are built for danger. And then the finances internally are actually built for bad times. And bad times means you have free cash flow, the free cash flow turns into GAAP profit.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>That means the stock-based comp has to be one that&#39;s aligned with our investors also because that&#39;s basically - it&#39;s part of a little bit longer philosophical narrative, but like if software is the only moat, then value and gross shares have to be re-evaluated in terms of their value, value only exists if you can actually get a tech node, call it, maybe something besides. And growth only exist if you build a company that is where the technology is strong enough, the business fundamentals are strong enough that the free cash flow actually turns into GAAP profitability, and that&#39;s linked to stock return. So this is a priority, both because you care, but also quite frankly, because it is the health of our company, which we care a lot about.&#34;</i></blockquote><p>As you can see, they acknowledge that this is an issue. We also like the mention of getting to GAAP profitability. However, we do encourage you to actually read the full transcript. The call was a bit interesting. There was not a lot of talk about financials and quite a bit of conjecture on the call. A lot of words, and not a lot of substance. This gives us a little bit more risk in addition to what was mentioned above.</p><p>Take home</p><p>Shares have been crushed. But the company operates with no debt and free cash flow. The dilution issue is a major annoyance for shareholders and is a risk factor for valuation. Despite falling to levels not seen since 2020, the stock remains expensive, but nowhere near where it was valued a year ago. The LinkedIn deal was previously Microsoft&#39;s largest, with a value of $26.2 billion.</p><p>Now there are reports Microsoft is looking to buy <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MNDT\">Mandiant</a>, the cybersecurity software firm formerly known as FireEye that is currently valued at about $4.5 billion.</p><p>Mandiant CEO Kevin Mandia said on the company&#39;s earnings conference call with analysts last week that it won&#39;t comment on rumors or speculation. Microsoft had no comment either.</p><p>It should come as no surprise that Microsoft might be looking to use some of the massive amount of cash it has on its balance sheet to close some deals. Microsoft has about $130 billion, and would still have around $60 billion left over after the Activision deal closes...assuming it is approved by regulators.</p><p>The cybersecurity business is a major area of focus for Nadella. Last year, Microsoft bought several security startups, including CloudKnox Security, RiskIQ and CyberX.</p><p>Security is a lucrative business for Microsoft since it generates a large chunk of recurring annual subscription revenue. It also helps Microsoft attract more corporate customers for its other numerous, cloud-based subscription software offerings.</p><p>So even if a Mandiant deal doesn&#39;t happen, Microsoft will likely set its sights elsewhere in the same space.</p><p>&#34;Cybercrime is the number <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> threat facing every business today,&#34; Nadella said during Microsoft&#39;s most recent earnings call with analysts last month. Well, the Federal Reserve's expedited meeting scheduled for Monday might lead to faster and more aggressive tapering than the market already expects. That could cause a shift out of riskier assets like stocks, leading to a market correction.Whether or not that particular scenario comes into play, the reality is that stocks can go down as well as up. If you recognize that and plan for it appropriately, you can make it through a mere market crash -- and emerge on the other side in a great spot to ride any subsequent recovery.With that in mind, here are four reasons not to worry about a stock-market crash.Image source: Getty Images.1. You don't need to sell your stocks todayAs a general rule, you should not have money invested in stocks that you expect you'll need to spend within the next five years. If you have followed that guideline, it becomes much easier to stomach a market crash. It's still not fun, but you can make it through.After all, if you don't need the money immediately, then you don't have to sell shares when they're low just to cover your bills. That gives you the chance to not only hold on through a crash, but also to potentially add more to strong companies while they're near their cheapest. Many retail &#34;bag-holders&#34; out there. And we would like to point out that we were wrong in our last column on the stock, despite making our members money. In our last column we predicted it would be emerging from the ashes and put out a profitable short-term trade recommendation in that piece. Winning.</p><p>However, <i>we were also wrong</i>, because we thought the bottom was put in after it reset back to trade just about at its direct public offering price. <i>We got that part wrong</i>.</p><p>While we get the win on the trade, we recognize that investors are getting creamed. Unfortunately this is a trader&#39;s market right now, and we have had a short bias the last few months, with selective long-term plays only in the most quality of names. We hate to see investors lose money, and we know it can be painful. The question is, what can we expect going forward. Is all hope lost here? We keep hearing that that technology stocks, especially those that are potential game-changing names, are on sale. But are they?</p><p>Names like Palantir are indeed often extremely expensive in the early stages. You really cannot value them on an earnings basis because there are no or very little earnings. Palantir also has a massive dilution problem, which means consistent positive EPS gets kicked further down the road. We think Palantir has a lot of potential, but this market is beyond unforgiving to those companies that do not make money or have sky high valuations. It does not matter at all how much promise they have; the stocks are all down and down massively. What can you do? We think there are three possible courses of action in the disaster that has been Palantir, all of which are correct.</p><p>The first option is the easiest, and perhaps a &#34;cop out&#34; for lack of a better term. But that option is to simply avoid the stock altogether in favor of deep value names offering some yield protection and are still managing to grow. We would not short down here at $7-$8, as the stock really has been pounded. The risk-reward is not favorable on a short after all of the action. So, you could do nothing and just watch it. If you own the stock, that would be a simple hold then. You could consider selling some upside calls on big bounces to lower cost basis if you choose.</p><p>The second course of action is in our wheelhouse. And that is to trade the name. Right now, we think that $7 level is a buy for gains to be sold at $8-$9, maybe $10. But this market environment is not going to get any better for innovative tech in the near-term. You could then consider some put options or mild shorts if the stock does enjoy a sizable bounce from the oversold conditions.</p><p>The third option is likely where a lot of readers are interested, and that is simply invest in the name, not obsess over the day-to-day tick in price. Add selectively to a well-rounded portfolio to improve cost basis, and put faith in management that it can deliver on growing the business profitably without diluting shareholders into oblivion. Right now this is a tall order for this company and management. While operationally the company is growing sufficiently, management has some credibility issues. What <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> has to do is determine if what the company offers will solve enough headaches for customers that eventually the growing sales turn into sustained and growing profits.</p><p>For years, Palantir may lose money or breakeven. Of course, the theory goes that companies like this will lose money as they spend to attract customers and build their moat. They invest heavily in their growth while seeing revenues increase dramatically. And as we know, Palantir is seeing revenues grow tremendously.</p><p>So, what is our take? We think you wait for the next down day in the stock. It has enjoyed a sizable relief bounce from the lows, but we believe the stock will retest these lows as the economy continues to worsen, rates are going up, and markets struggle. We would be both traders and investors at $7. The risk could be that Palantir&#39;s growth fades and the company never really transforms the world. New competitors could emerge. Dilution could continue so long that positive EPS becomes out of reach without future buybacks. We hate to say it but frankly, it is not uncommon for stocks in seemingly innovative companies to wither away to sub $1 then eventually delist because the company failed to grow and deliver on its plans.</p><p>Although we were wrong in that bottom call, operationally we are seeing some positive signs. Internal metrics improve year-after-year for Palantir and we see no reason why the ongoing growth will not eventually lead to real profits, other than dilution. We admit and accept that so many great companies start out losing money. While the Russia/Ukraine conflict was a seemingly bullish development as it highlights a need to mine data for intelligence, some see a limited benefit for Palantir. For the long-term investor, we like a buy in this stock on weakness that sends the stock lower. While it will still be expensive, even for high growth tech, it will be much more reasonable compared to a few months ago. And it is not like the company is bleeding out and losing money hand over first. Palantir is breaking even and making some money some quarters.</p><h2>Palantir&#39;s Government and Commercial sectors showing growth</h2><p>In the just reported quarter, performance was strong on the top line and ahead of consensus estimates. Total revenue grew 31% year-over-year to $446 million, beating estimates by almost $3 million. However, its profitability was lower than expected by $0.02, and worse, guidance was less than consensus. That crushed the stock. But that said, both segments are doing well.</p><p>Palantir has two reporting segments: both the government and commercial segments. The commercial revenue stream continues to grow rapidly, while government results are likely to get a big boost following international strife. While the war in Ukraine may or may not lead to more business the company has invested in itself to grow sales. There are some concerns with backlog, but as we previously covered, Palantir has been hiring.</p><p>Palantir has expanded its sales team and they have been working to secure new orders. However, the Government revenues have slowed their growth somewhat. Deceleration of revenue growth is definitely a negative for a company like this that does not enjoy high earnings. They rose 16% from last year, and the company added a total of 40 net new customers in the quarter, which is very positive, 3 on the government side and 37 on the commercial side. We think it is important to note that the commercial space is doing well. The commercial revenue is expanding rapidly, increasing 132% in 2021, and here in Q1, it rose 54% year-over-year.</p><p>Palantir is seeing very positive momentum in its margins as well. Positive movement in margins is important in a software company as it really highlights strengths, or weaknesses, in the way it distributes its products. Palantir is delivering. Adjusted gross margin was 81%. Contribution margin was 57%. First quarter adjusted income from operations, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes was $117 million, representing an adjusted operating margin of 26%, ahead of management&#39;s prior guidance of 23%. This is positive.</p><h2>Palantir is slightly profitable, for now</h2><p>Despite the pull back now to single-digits, the stock is actually still expensive, like so many other growth tech names. The company lost $39 million in the quarter operationally, but adjusted income from operations was $117 million. The company is still free cash flow positive. Adjusted free cash flow was $30 million for the quarter. That said, the company was profitable at a $0.02 adjusted EPS bottom line figure, but this missed estimated by $0.02, so that is a negative, and another reason the stock is down.</p><p>We say the company is profitable for now for two reasons. First, there is a ton of stock based-compensation. This has been discussed in the past but we have to reiterate that we like that management has acknowledged that it is a problem. Still, it is ongoing, and every share that is issued waters down the ability to increase EPS. In short, shareholders could be diluted into losses. The second reason is that although there is growth internationally, as well as big gains in the U.S., we could see the government and companies slash spending if there is a recession. Each week, things seem to get worse in terms of how expensive things are, and corporate earnings reports continue to highlight the tremendous pressure inflation is putting on them. While Palantir&#39;s technology should help governments and businesses alike operate more efficiently, and therefore more profitably, we could see reduced spending on services like this.</p><h2>Still expensive</h2><p>On the valuation front, the stock is still pricey. Sure, looking at traditional price-to-earnings is futile, but if you did you would see a stock at like 50X. Very pricey. Perhaps the more appropriate measure is the price-to-sales ratio, but not only is this still very high, the market has basically said it is no longer willing to pay for sky high multiples. Keep that in mind. At 9X sales, the stock is much cheaper than it has ever been, but it is still not &#34;cheap&#34;. We would highlight that the PEG ratio is reasonable and we like the cash flow metrics.</p><h2>The outlook is murky</h2><p>The biggest concern right now is not valuation. It is not dilution. It is not the &#34;overall market.&#34; The largest issue is a slowdown in performance. The Q2 guidance was pretty weak. The company perhaps is underpromising to overdeliver, by management guided to a base case of $470 million in revenue. This was below consensus of $484 million. However in the release management noted that &#34;there is a wide range of potential upside to [the] guidance.&#34; The one positive factor to highlight is that Palantir continues to see 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.</p><h2>Take home</h2><p>The company operates with no debt and has nice positive free cash flow. They are poised to benefit from strong secular trends in big data and using analytics to improve operations. In the short-term, it is painful. Long-term, minus the dilution issues, there is a lot of promise here for future profits. The customer growth is impressive as is the revenue growth. While the stock has been a disaster, man analysts have price targets implying massive upside. We continue to see ongoing rapid growth in the U.S., but do caution that a big economic slowdown could hurt government and commercial spending. (NYSE:PLTR) stock has been a total disaster for longs. Many retail \"bag-holders\" out there. And we would like to point out that we were wrong in our last column on the stock, despite making our members money. In our last column we predicted it would be emerging from the ashes and put out a profitable short-term trade recommendation in that piece. Winning.However, we were also wrong, because we thought the bottom was put in after it reset back to trade just about at its direct public offering price. We got that part wrong.While we get the win on the trade, we recognize that investors are getting creamed. Unfortunately this is a trader's market right now, and we have had a short bias the last few months, with selective long-term plays only in the most quality of names. We hate to see investors lose money, and we know it can be painful. The question is, what can we expect going forward. Is all hope lost here? We keep hearing that that technology stocks, especially those that are potential game-changing names, are on sale. But are they?Names like Palantir are indeed often extremely expensive in the early stages. You really cannot value them on an earnings basis because there are no or very little earnings. Palantir also has a massive dilution problem, which means consistent positive EPS gets kicked further down the road. We think Palantir has a lot of potential, but this market is beyond unforgiving to those companies that do not make money or have sky high valuations. It does not matter at all how much promise they have; the stocks are all down and down massively. What can you do? We think there are three possible courses of action in the disaster that has been Palantir, all of which are correct.The first option is the easiest, and perhaps a \"cop out\" for lack of a better term. But that option is to simply avoid the stock altogether in favor of deep value names offering some yield protection and are still managing to grow. We would not short down here at $7-$8, as the stock really has been pounded. The risk-reward is not favorable on a short after all of the action. So, you could do nothing and just watch it. If you own the stock, that would be a simple hold then. You could consider selling some upside calls on big bounces to lower cost basis if you choose.The second course of action is in our wheelhouse. And that is to trade the name. Right now, we think that $7 level is a buy for gains to be sold at $8-$9, maybe $10. But this market environment is not going to get any better for innovative tech in the near-term. You could then consider some put options or mild shorts if the stock does enjoy a sizable bounce from the oversold conditions.The third option is likely where a lot of readers are interested, and that is simply invest in the name, not obsess over the day-to-day tick in price. Add selectively to a well-rounded portfolio to improve cost basis, and put faith in management that it can deliver on growing the business profitably without diluting shareholders into oblivion. Right now this is a tall order for this company and management. While operationally the company is growing sufficiently, management has some credibility issues. What one has to do is determine if what the company offers will solve enough headaches for customers that eventually the growing sales turn into sustained and growing profits.For years, Palantir may lose money or breakeven. Of course, the theory goes that companies like this will lose money as they spend to attract customers and build their moat. They invest heavily in their growth while seeing revenues increase dramatically. And as we know, Palantir is seeing revenues grow tremendously.So, what is our take? We think you wait for the next down day in the stock. It has enjoyed a sizable relief bounce from the lows, but we believe the stock will retest these lows as the economy continues to worsen, rates are going up, and markets struggle. We would be both traders and investors at $7. The risk could be that Palantir's growth fades and the company never really transforms the world. New competitors could emerge. Dilution could continue so long that positive EPS becomes out of reach without future buybacks. We hate to say it but frankly, it is not uncommon for stocks in seemingly innovative companies to wither away to sub $1 then eventually delist because the company failed to grow and deliver on its plans.Although we were wrong in that bottom call, operationally we are seeing some positive signs. Internal metrics improve year-after-year for Palantir and we see no reason why the ongoing growth will not eventually lead to real profits, other than dilution. We admit and accept that so many great companies start out losing money. While the Russia/Ukraine conflict was a seemingly bullish development as it highlights a need to mine data for intelligence, some see a limited benefit for Palantir. For the long-term investor, we like a buy in this stock on weakness that sends the stock lower. While it will still be expensive, even for high growth tech, it will be much more reasonable compared to a few months ago. And it is not like the company is bleeding out and losing money hand over first. Palantir is breaking even and making some money some quarters.Palantir's Government and Commercial sectors showing growthIn the just reported quarter, performance was strong on the top line and ahead of consensus estimates. Total revenue grew 31% year-over-year to $446 million, beating estimates by almost $3 million. However, its profitability was lower than expected by $0.02, and worse, guidance was less than consensus. That crushed the stock. But that said, both segments are doing well.Palantir has two reporting segments: both the government and commercial segments. The commercial revenue stream continues to grow rapidly, while government results are likely to get a big boost following international strife. While the war in Ukraine may or may not lead to more business the company has invested in itself to grow sales. There are some concerns with backlog, but as we previously covered, Palantir has been hiring.Palantir has expanded its sales team and they have been working to secure new orders. However, the Government revenues have slowed their growth somewhat. Deceleration of revenue growth is definitely a negative for a company like this that does not enjoy high earnings. They rose 16% from last year, and the company added a total of 40 net new customers in the quarter, which is very positive, 3 on the government side and 37 on the commercial side. We think it is important to note that the commercial space is doing well. The commercial revenue is expanding rapidly, increasing 132% in 2021, and here in Q1, it rose 54% year-over-year.Palantir is seeing very positive momentum in its margins as well. Positive movement in margins is important in a software company as it really highlights strengths, or weaknesses, in the way it distributes its products. Palantir is delivering. Adjusted gross margin was 81%. Contribution margin was 57%. First quarter adjusted income from operations, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes was $117 million, representing an adjusted operating margin of 26%, ahead of management's prior guidance of 23%. This is positive.Palantir is slightly profitable, for nowDespite the pull back now to single-digits, the stock is actually still expensive, like so many other growth tech names. The company lost $39 million in the quarter operationally, but adjusted income from operations was $117 million. The company is still free cash flow positive. Adjusted free cash flow was $30 million for the quarter. That said, the company was profitable at a $0.02 adjusted EPS bottom line figure, but this missed estimated by $0.02, so that is a negative, and another reason the stock is down.We say the company is profitable for now for two reasons. First, there is a ton of stock based-compensation. This has been discussed in the past but we have to reiterate that we like that management has acknowledged that it is a problem. Still, it is ongoing, and every share that is issued waters down the ability to increase EPS. In short, shareholders could be diluted into losses. The second reason is that although there is growth internationally, as well as big gains in the U.S., we could see the government and companies slash spending if there is a recession. Each week, things seem to get worse in terms of how expensive things are, and corporate earnings reports continue to highlight the tremendous pressure inflation is putting on them. While Palantir's technology should help governments and businesses alike operate more efficiently, and therefore more profitably, we could see reduced spending on services like this.Still expensiveOn the valuation front, the stock is still pricey. Sure, looking at traditional price-to-earnings is futile, but if you did you would see a stock at like 50X. Very pricey. Perhaps the more appropriate measure is the price-to-sales ratio, but not only is this still very high, the market has basically said it is no longer willing to pay for sky high multiples. Keep that in mind. At 9X sales, the stock is much cheaper than it has ever been, but it is still not \"cheap\". We would highlight that the PEG ratio is reasonable and we like the cash flow metrics.The outlook is murkyThe biggest concern right now is not valuation. It is not dilution. It is not the \"overall market.\" The largest issue is a slowdown in performance. The Q2 guidance was pretty weak. The company perhaps is underpromising to overdeliver, by management guided to a base case of $470 million in revenue. This was below consensus of $484 million. However in the release management noted that \"there is a wide range of potential upside to [the] guidance.\" The one positive factor to highlight is that Palantir continues to see 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.Take homeThe company operates with no debt and has nice positive free cash flow. They are poised to benefit from strong secular trends in big data and using analytics to improve operations. In the short-term, it is painful. Long-term, minus the dilution issues, there is a lot of promise here for future profits. The customer growth is impressive as is the revenue growth. While the stock has been a disaster, man analysts have price targets implying massive upside. We continue to see ongoing rapid growth in the U.S., but do caution that a big economic slowdown could hurt government and commercial spending. The LinkedIn deal was previously Microsoft&#39;s largest, with a value of $26.2 billion.</p><p>Now there are reports Microsoft is looking to buy <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MNDT\">Mandiant</a>, the cybersecurity software firm formerly known as FireEye that is currently valued at about $4.5 billion.</p><p>Mandiant CEO Kevin Mandia said on the company&#39;s earnings conference call with analysts last week that it won&#39;t comment on rumors or speculation. Microsoft had no comment either.</p><p>It should come as no surprise that Microsoft might be looking to use some of the massive amount of cash it has on its balance sheet to close some deals. Microsoft has about $130 billion, and would still have around $60 billion left over after the Activision deal closes...assuming it is approved by regulators.</p><p>The cybersecurity business is a major area of focus for Nadella. Last year, Microsoft bought several security startups, including CloudKnox Security, RiskIQ and CyberX.</p><p>Security is a lucrative business for Microsoft since it generates a large chunk of recurring annual subscription revenue. It also helps Microsoft attract more corporate customers for its other numerous, cloud-based subscription software offerings.</p><p>So even if a Mandiant deal doesn&#39;t happen, Microsoft will likely set its sights elsewhere in the same space.</p><p>&#34;Cybercrime is the number <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> threat facing every business today,&#34; Nadella said during Microsoft&#39;s most recent earnings call with analysts last month. When companies continue to pay their dividends in a down market, that helps investors in a number of ways.First, the cash itself can be used to buy more shares while they're down -- either of the company that paid the dividend, or of a different one that looks like a compelling value at a low price. You have a value investor's mindsetUltimately, a share of stock is an ownership stake in a business.
