Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that even in the midst of the ongoing meltdown in technology stocks, the iPhone maker has outperformed the broader indexes and many of its peers.From their peaks several months ago, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes have declined 17% and 26%, respectively, while Apple stock has shed just 13%.That performance notwithstanding, there are plenty of reasons for investors to buy Apple stock and hold forever.1. It's Warren Buffett's largest holdingGiven his extraordinary track record, investors could do far worse than following in the footsteps of legendary money manager Warren Buffett. Since taking the helm of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, the \"Oracle of Omaha\" has delivered mind-boggling returns, generating a compound annual growth rate of more than 20%. In fact, by the end of 2021, the company's overall returns clocked in at a staggering 3,641,613%.Lest there be any doubt, Apple is far and away Berkshire's largest holding. Buffett ended the second quarter with nearly 895 million shares of Apple stock, worth roughly $122 billion as of June, 30, accounting for about 41% of Berkshire's portfolio. That's quite a vote of confidence from one of the world's most successful investors.2. One billion iPhones strong -- and growingThere's no question that the release of the iconic iPhone in 2007 ushered in the modern smartphone and forever changed the way we communicate. The device's sleek design and integrated computing power took the world by storm. Now, as we await the release of the upcoming iPhone 14, Apple dominates the market, with more than 1 billion active iPhones in the wild.Rumors are swirling that the next-generation device -- which is due to be unveiled next week -- could sport some major upgrades and four new models. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives estimates that roughly 24% of iPhone owners worldwide haven't upgraded their device over the past 3.5 years. Even in the midst of the prevailing macroeconomic headwinds, this could mark the beginning of the next big product cycle for the iPhone.3. Apple is the new blackWhile the iPhone gets all the press, Apple's wearables, home products, and accessories segment -- which includes such products as Apple Watch, AirPods, AirTags, and Beats headphones -- continue to steadily attract converts. Earlier this year, noted tech analyst Horace Dediu announced that \"Apple Wearables is now [the size of] a Fortune 100 business.\" In fact, the segment has generated more revenue so far in fiscal 2022 than either the Mac or the iPad.Supply constraints and foreign exchange headwinds have weighed on the segment, which grew just 6% year over year through the first three quarters of fiscal 2022. That said, the resulting pent-up demand will eventually give way to a surge in sales. Furthermore, the company is expected to release the latest versions of its Apple Watch next week. These could include a Pro model, which could serve to supercharge sales of the popular device.4. Services: Apple's second-biggest breadwinnerLong before anyone else, CEO Tim Cook saw the potential for Apple's services segment, announcing plans in early 2017 to double its revenue over the coming four years. Fast forward to mid-2022, and services has come into its own.The segment, which includes Apple Music, the App Store, Apple Pay, and Apple TV+ (among others), just set a June quarter record,  generating 19% of Apple's total revenue. Services also saw revenue records in each major category, including all-time records for Music, Cloud Services, Apple Care, and Payment Services.Apple TV+ began as something of an industry joke, with just eight programs and a documentary. But nobody's laughing now. Apple has netted more than 250 awards and over 1,100 nominations for its programming, including 52 Emmy Award nominations in 2022.5. Dividends: The gift that keeps on givingApple began paying a dividend again in 2012 and has amassed quite an impressive track record. The quarterly payout began at a split-adjusted $0.095 and has soared 143% in just ten years.This includes Apple's announcement earlier this year, which boosted the quarterly payout to $0.23 per share, an increase of 5% for 2022. That likely won't be the last increase as Apple is using less than 15% of its profits to fund the payout, giving the company plenty of opportunity for future increases.6. Fewer shares = a bigger slice of the Apple pieAnother highlight of Apple's shareholder-friendly policies is the company's strong share-repurchase plan. Apple began buying back shares in earnest in early 2013 and has never taken its foot off the gas. As a result, with each passing quarter, Apple shareholders own a larger share of the company. Although Alibaba skipped its guidance for FY 2023, the firm&#39;s valuation still makes very little sense. Investors are underpricing Alibaba’s earnings potential!</p><h2><b>Previous expectations</b></h2><p>In my previous work on Alibaba, I mentioned the very real possibility of Alibaba outperforming EPS predictions on Thursday which have gone through a significant downward revision cycle over the last year. Low expectations were the main reason why I thought Alibaba could outperform low consensus EPS predictions. And this is what Alibaba did: The company reported Q4’22 adjusted EPS of $1.18 which beat predictions by $0.10. Additionally, Alibaba beat on revenues as well.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bc75385b593d4759781f8c643f10da5b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"233\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><h2><b>Alibaba’s e-Commerce growth</b></h2><p>Overall, Alibaba’s revenues increased 9% in the last quarter to 204.1B Chinese Yuan which calculates to $32.2B. Alibaba’s core China e-Commerce revenues increased 8% year over year to 140.3B Chinese Yuan ($22.1B), which was an improvement over the previous quarter which saw 7% top line growth. So, Alibaba slightly improved its performance in its most important business quarter over quarter. Alibaba also saw continual strength in Local Consumer Services where revenues surged 29% year over year to $10.4B Chinese Yuan ($1.6B) and the Cloud segment which saw its revenues increase by 12% year over year to 19.0B Chinese Yuan ($3.0B).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7367ad9ca7d57fdc29a04bfe53983b08\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"472\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Alibaba</p><p>What stood out positively from Alibaba’s earnings sheet was that the company continued to make progress expanding its e-Commerce platform despite a challenged macro environment. Alibaba added 28M new accounts to its ecosystem in the last quarter, the majority of which (25M) were added in China. Alibaba’s domestic e-Commerce business is still the firm’s largest revenue source, contributing 69% of total revenues. However, Alibaba has a huge opportunity to grow its other businesses as well, especially its logistics operations which are vertically integrated into Alibaba’s e-Commerce operations, and its Cloud segment. I recently described the progress Alibaba is making in the Cloud business.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5cde9895f0dc3182788f90281d1915d9\" tg-width=\"1107\" tg-height=\"442\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Alibaba</p><p>Alibaba ended the quarter with 1.3B active customer accounts in its enterprise. Over the last year, Alibaba added a massive 177M new customers to its platform which creates a base for long term earnings and free cash flow growth.</p><h2><b>Alibaba’s share buybacks</b></h2><p>Before Alibaba released earnings, I mentioned that the company likely used its free cash flow in the last quarter to repurchase a ton of shares. It was obvious to me that the e-Commerce company would repurchase a lot of shares considering that Alibaba just up-sized its stock buyback from $15B to $25B at the time and that the stock traded at unreasonably low prices in March.</p><p>I like it when companies increase their buybacks when stock valuations are depressed and Alibaba did in fact repurchase a significant amount of shares in the last quarter. In Q4’22, Alibaba repurchased approximately 17.8M American Depositary Shares for about $2.0B. I expected a minimum share repurchase of $2.0B. In the last twelve months, Alibaba repurchased 60M American Depositary Shares for a total consideration of $9.6B.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/70f53c2e10f93e04902c9658236d0ddb\" tg-width=\"1028\" tg-height=\"305\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Alibaba</p><h2><b>Skipped earnings guidance</b></h2><p>Alibaba did not provide earnings guidance which it normally does at the beginning of the fiscal year. The e-Commerce firm cited uncertainties related to COVID-19 as a reason not to provide guidance. Normally, a lack of guidance is not well received and stocks of companies that don’t guide are punished by the market. In this case, however, things are different. Alibaba’s shares have been so battered so much since the fourth-quarter of 2020 that investors cheer results even if they are more mediocre.</p><h2><b>Alibaba’s valuation is wrong: Undervalued e-Commerce prospects</b></h2><p>Alibaba’s stock market valuation makes very little sense to me. This is because, for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>, Alibaba is very profitable. Alibaba generated net income of 47.1B Chinese Yuan ($7.4B) in FY 2022 while adjusted net income was 136.4B or $21.5B. There is some serious profitability in Alibaba’s business and investors don’t seem to appreciate this right now. Additionally, we are dealing with one of the largest e-Commerce empires in the world regarding account size and reach, but Alibaba&#39;s valuation still does not reflect those factors. Shares of Alibaba trade at a P-E ratio of 10 X. JD.com (JD), for example, has a P-E ratio nearly twice as high as Alibaba&#39;s. Alibaba&#39;s historical valuation shows a P-E ratio as high as 30 X. As wrong as Alibaba&#39;s valuation is, it represents deep value and low risk.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/275fc298915f2035a8e72d39e92a8626\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Data by YCharts</p><h2><b>Risks with Alibaba</b></h2><p>Alibaba faces continual top line risks related to a slowdown in the Chinese e-Commerce market. While Alibaba is investing in other businesses to diversify its revenue mix, a continual moderation in top line growth poses a risk for Alibaba and the stock. What would change my mind about Alibaba is if earnings and free cash flow prospects in the e-Commerce business seriously deteriorated or Beijing announced new crackdowns on the company.</p><h2><b>Final thoughts</b></h2><p>I expected Alibaba to do better than estimates in Q4’22, in large part because investor expectations have been driven too low. Given the circumstances with COVID-19 lockdowns and a regulatory onslaught in the last year, Alibaba did a good job in squeezing out 9% revenue growth.</p><p>Alibaba does have some problems, like slowing top line growth and reliance on domestic e-Commerce transactions, but the firm’s irrationally low valuation is not of them. Alibaba added a significant number (177M) of new accounts in the last twelve months which speaks to the strength and the appeal of Alibaba’s various e-Commerce platforms. An armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine has created an atmosphere of panic unlike any in recent memory. Various media outlets have described the crisis as the biggest armed conflict in Europe since World War 2. The days-old conflict has already claimed hundreds of lives, and displaced hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. It is a very frightening, and tragic, situation.</p><p>So, it shouldn&#39;t come as any surprise that markets have been jittery since the war began. On February 24, the first day after Russia&#39;s invasion, markets opened1.65% lower than they closed the day before. In subsequent trading days, the markets regained what they had lost, and then some. Nevertheless, scary sounding headlines continued to be released for the remainder of the week. Some examples include:</p><ul><li><p>&#34;These 13 Stocks Implode as the World Prepares for War.&#34; (Investor&#39;s Business Daily).</p></li><li><p>&#34;Stocks tank as War Threat intensifies.&#34; (Morningstar).</p></li><li><p>&#34;War Will Give Stocks no Peace.&#34; (Forbes).</p></li></ul><p>The subtext of these headlines couldn&#39;t be clearer:</p><p><i>War is a scary prospect for stock market investors. Be very afraid!</i></p><p>To be sure, there are legitimate reasons to be afraid of war. The human toll is very real, and wars can bring short term economic disruptions as well. The war in Ukraine has reportedly taken energy pipelines offline, contributing to higher energy costs and inflation. So there are very real reasons to be concerned. The question is,<i>&#34;is the stock market one of these reasons?&#34;</i></p><p>Going by history, no. Although the flash point moments in war do tend to be correlated with brief selloffs, stocks recover from these events quickly. There was only one case in the last 100 years in which a war was correlated with a long-term decline in stock prices but, as you&#39;re about to see, the war was not likely what caused stocks to go down that time. Generally speaking, wars can coincide with panic selling, but it doesn&#39;t last long. Given this, it would be foolhardy to sell your stocks right now because of the situation in Eastern Europe.</p><p><b>Wars and Stocks: the Correlation</b></p><p>If we look at historical market data, we can see that the very early moments of wars do tend to be correlated with stock market selloffs. A recentFortune article reviewed five major conflict situations and how they impacted stocks. It concluded that war-related stock market dips do occur, but tend to be short lived. The examples given are:</p><ul><li><p>World War 1: the Dow fell 30%, then was closed for six months, then surged 88% in 1915.</p></li><li><p>World War 2: 2.9% drawdown on the morning of the Pearl Harbor attack. Losses erased within a month.</p></li><li><p>Cuban Missile Crisis: tiny 1.2% selloff followed by a 10% gain for the remainder of the year.</p></li><li><p>9/11: 15% selloff within days of the attack. The market didn&#39;t find a bottom this time until 2002. It then went on to enter a bull market that lasted until 2008.</p></li><li><p>U.S. invading Iraq: stocks jumped 2.3% on the day of the invasion and ended the year up 30%.</p></li></ul><p>I&#39;ve included a chart below, borrowed from Trading Economics, that shows the approximate dates of the events above (except World War 1). Looking at it visually, you can see that all of these war-related events coincided with near term lows, but were followed by long-term gains. The one exception is 9/11: it took stocks nearly a year to find a bottom after that one. However, in that particular case, the long-term downtrend was not actually caused by the attack, as I&#39;ll explain shortly.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/76d1ac70f5e16bcef0d0abacea19479d\" tg-width=\"816\" tg-height=\"517\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Trading Economics</span></p><p>As you can see, 9/11 occurred about halfway through a bear market that began in 2000 and ended in 2002. It was the one &#34;war&#34; related event of the five mentioned in Fortune that was followed by prolonged bearishness. However, it was also the one where there was a lot more than conflict contributing to the selloff. The 9/11 crash occurred about halfway through the Dotcom bubble burst. The bear market of the time was caused by the rapid collapse in prices of high flying tech stocks, some of which went bankrupt and were delisted. Notable examples included:</p><ul><li><p>Pets.com (went bankrupt).</p></li><li><p>Priceline (acquired after falling 94%).</p></li><li><p>Garden.com (shut down after falling to 9 cents a share).</p></li></ul><p>All of these stocks went bust long before 9/11 was part of the conversation. Therefore, it&#39;s hard to say how much of the losses in the 2000-2002 period were due to the bubble collapsing, and how much were due to 9/11. The 2000 bubble collapsed mainly due to valuation concerns, companies experiencing financial strain, and a series of interest rate hikes in1999 and 2000. At the peak, the NASDAQ had a 175 P/E ratio. These factors probably contributed to the 2000-2002 bear market more than any conflict did.</p><p>If we take the post-9/11 selloff without the historical context, then it took the markets a little under a year to recover from the 15% drawdown. That&#39;s not too bad, all things considered. Of course, the markets took much longer to get back to the highs set in 2000. The S&amp;P 500 took six years to get back to the previous top, the NASDAQ a full 15! So the bear market of 2000-2002 was quite long, and the recovery from it was even longer. But again, most of it took place long before 9/11. The losses incurred in the immediate aftermath of that event reversed in less than a year.</p><p><b>Why Isn&#39;t War Bad For Stocks?</b></p><p>Having established that war has not historically been bad for the stock market, the next logical question to ask is, &#34;why?&#34; War is certainly among the most destructive mass-scale activities human beings participate in. Lives are lost, infrastructure is destroyed, people are displaced, and the list just goes on and on. It certainly seems like wars destroy a lot of value. Why, then, do stocks generally go up when they are happening?</p><p>First, it helps to understand how broad the stock market really is.</p><p>To begin with just the U.S., the Wilshire 5000 index consists of 3,500 stocks. It is generally taken as equivalent to the total U.S. stock market. It may exclude some OTC stocks, but it is a pretty good proxy for U.S. listed securities.</p><p>Looking abroad, there are even more stocks to choose from. The OECD says that there are41,000 listed equities globally, and the number rises every year.</p><p>What all of this means is that the universe of stocks is very large. It follows logically from this that different stocks will respond to armed conflict in different ways. While you might find some companies out there that lose money because of armed conflict, you&#39;ll find others that won&#39;t. Some companies will inevitably do just fine. Out of respect for the lives in jeopardy in Eastern Europe right now, I will avoid any talk of arms dealers, defense contractors and other &#34;war beneficiary&#34; stocks. But I will draw your attention to one major industry that serves as a perfect illustration of how companies can thrive during wars:</p><p><b>Energy</b></p><p>As you might be aware, the Russia/Ukraine war has severely disrupted global energy supplies. Russia&#39;s Nord Stream 2 pipeline has been suspended, pipelines in Ukraine have been knocked out, and Western energy companies have withdrawn from Russia. Without a doubt, there are Russian energy companies that could lose a lot of money over this.<b>Gazprom</b>(OTCPK:OGZPY), for example, is heavily invested in the now suspended Nord Stream 2. Its stock had fallen 35% for the year before trading was suspended on February 25th. That&#39;s noteworthy because energy stocks as a whole rose in the same period.</p><p>So, Russian energy stocks are in a bad place right now.</p><p>But remember:</p><p><i>It&#39;s a big world out there.</i></p><p>All of the oil that&#39;s not flowing because of the Russia/Ukraine conflict has to be supplied by someone else. And because of the supply shock, that &#34;someone else&#34; is going to collect higher prices on the oil they sell. When supply decreases but demand is unchanged, prices rise. And right now, the global supply of oil is being reduced.</p><p>There are many companies that can thrive in such an environment. If you look at a Canadian energy company like <b>Suncor Energy</b>(SU), for example, it is about as insulated from the Russia/Ukraine situation as you can imagine. It makes money by selling gasoline to Canadians and by exporting crude oil to Americans. None of this is in any way threatened by the situation in Eastern Europe. Yet oil prices are rising worldwide, even in regions that are not being directly impacted by the conflict. Gasoline prices are rising right along side them. All of this means that Suncor gets to charge higher prices for its products than it did before. That results in higher earnings, as we saw the fourth quarter. In Q4, Suncor&#39;s funds from operations (FFO)grew 157%year-over-year. Net income and operating income swung from losses to profits. That was all thanks to oil prices rising year-over-year. Today, oil prices are even higher than they were in Q4, having set new 7 year highs. So Suncor should do even better in Q1.</p><p>What this example illustrates is the fact that equities can respond to crises in surprising ways. Sure, some are damaged by pandemonium, but others can do just fine. Overall, the presence of disorder in the world shouldn&#39;t affect your outlook. To make a 100-bagger with this one, its market capitalization would have to reach $290 billion one day. Can this air-taxi pioneer pull it off? I'm very bullish on the company's future. But Joby is a high-risk stock. So my investment here is tiny (way under 1% of my family investment portfolio).I'm bullish on this stock because I'm negative about self-driving cars. I don't think the collective intelligence at Alphabet or Tesla can sufficiently plan for all the variables of driving a car in the street. Even if the artificial intelligence-based technology works and reduces car collisions, every accident is a major lawsuit waiting to happen. For example, suppose Tesla manages to reduce the accident rate from 6 million a year (the total number of car accidents in 2018 in the U.S. and assuming all cars are self driven) to 1 million -- which would be incredible -- that's still 1 million lawsuits a year the company will face.Joby, meanwhile, is changing the transportation landscape in a three-dimensional way. There's almost zero traffic in the sky. The vehicles are way faster and just as quiet. I think Joby could easily go up 10 times in value, just with human pilots. Because when you're shooting for a 100-bagger, you don't need (or want) a large initial investment. There are so many things that could go wrong, you might lose everything. But the potential upside is so high, it's worth making small investments now before the crowd wakes up and bids up the stock price.A couple of 100-baggers will make you richWhile a 100-bagger seems impossibly big, it actually happens fairly often. So that's why it's worth your time to search for companies chasing massive opportunities, and make small investments while the stock price is still tiny, and the future is uncertain.How big is the market for air taxis?A couple of years ago, Morgan Stanley put out a research report that estimates the market for air taxis to reach $1.5 trillion by 2040. It's not hard to see why transportation will go vertical in the future. Joby's aircraft is electric and recently demonstrated how quiet the aircraft, a critical parameter to operate in populated areas. At about 55 decibels during take-off, it's more than a thousand times quieter than a typical helicopter. And that's kind of amazing, because these vehicles are super-fast. How fast? The company's air taxi hit 205 miles an hour in a practice run earlier this year.The company also demonstrated that the aircraft can fly 150 miles on a single battery charge. The plan is to use them to ferry passengers in and around congested cities. Los Angeles, for instance, is known for its heavy traffic. Electric cars do not fix that problem. Self-driving cars don't fix that problem, either. Nobody likes a traffic snarl, and anything that reduces those bottlenecks will be a blessing. Joby estimates the market for its air taxis in L.A. at $500 million a year. That's just one city!Tesla in the sky?How big is the air taxi opportunity? Well, if you don't believe Morgan Stanley's $1.5 trillion number, consider what Elon Musk has to say.So, over time, we think full self-driving will become the most important source of profitability for Tesla. It's -- actually, if you run the numbers on robotaxis, it's kind of nutty -- it's nutty good from a financial standpoint.That's thought-provoking. Musk is happy about his fleet of electric cars and his $53 billion in revenues. But he believes self-driving taxis is actually a much bigger opportunity in the future.Try to imagine investing in Tesla back in 2010, when the company had its initial public offering (IPO). It was a daunting investment. Tesla had no profits and had only sold 1,000 cars in total when the company went public. If the company had suffered a few bad breaks a decade ago, it could have easily gone Chapter 11.Joby in 2022 is much like Tesla in 2010 -- a highly risky investment opportunity with a huge potential upside. The way you approach a dangerous stock like this is by making a small investment now, and maybe adding to your position as the dangers recede and the market gets more and more excited.Data by YCharts.Uber in the sky?Of course, when you think \"taxis,\" you think Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER), the company that disrupted the taxi industry around the world. You might think Uber would be interested in that $1.5 trillion market opportunity, too. And you'd be right. Back in 2016, Uber published a white paper about the future of urban air transportation. Two years later, the ride-sharing giant introduced its prototype vehicle. But Uber was too late to the party, and so in 2020 the company abandoned the race and sold out to Joby (and invested $75 million in the start-up).Similarly, Toyota decided to invest almost $400 million in Joby last year. That's a major influx of cash. After several financing rounds and its SPAC last year, Joby is now sitting on $1.6 billion dollars.So here we have a huge market opportunity. Uber sees it, and Toyota sees it. And yet these two massive companies both decided to back Joby instead of going alone. Why?Joby has a powerful first-mover advantage. The company has been working on its aircraft for over a decade and has been collaborating with NASA since 2012. Joby's near-term goals are to get its aircraft certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), scale up its manufacturing, and launch its air taxi service in 2024. It's in the lead and likely to be first to market in the U.S.What about self-driving air taxis?I think Musk's vision of robotaxis in the future is very exciting. But given the congestion in the cities and the pain-points that air taxis solve, I believe this revolution may very well happen in the air first. After all, the first autopilots in aircraft were introduced in 1912! We already have drones in the air. The safety issues with a self-driving aircraft are minuscule compared to the complexities on the ground.So that's why I've made a tiny investment in Joby Aviation now, even with a significant possibility that I might lose it all. The company complements its portfolio with a high-quality financial profile. It has an investment-grade balance sheet and a reasonable dividend payout ratio.
