The extension is set to push out SoFi&#39;s earnings fromits student loan business further out into the future and it limits new student loan refinancings. While I have to adjust my EBITDA outlook for next year, I still believe that SoFi has considerable potential to become a major player in the FinTech space over the long term. Because of the unexpected extension of the student loan moratorium, I am changing my rating on SoFi from buy to hold!</p><p><b>Another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium</b></p><p>The repayment of student loans was first frozen in FY 2020 in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was meant to provide financial relief for student loan borrowers at a time when the US economy was shut down. The US government subsequently extended the student loan payment pause multiple times. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced that it was yet again extending the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium from December 2022 to June 2023, meaning SoFi will continue to see a delay in student loan repayments which limits the FinTech&#39;s earnings potential in FY 2023.</p><p>Because student loans are a big business for SoFi, the extension of the student loan moratorium in April of this year specifically resulted in SoFi massively down-grading its net revenue and adjusted EBITDA outlook for FY 2022. The personal finance company at the time reduced its net revenue outlook from $1.57B to $1.47B and its adjusted EBITDA guidance from $180M to just $100M, showing a decrease of $80M. SoFi later raised its FY 2022 guidance to account for strong member and product growth as well as improving customer monetization.</p><p>Repeated extensions of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium have resulted in a major decline in SoFi&#39;s student loan business. Originations of student loans were a key driver of growth for SoFi before the pandemic, but the current situation has not helped the business very much. In the third-quarter, SoFi&#39;s student loan originations dropped 53% year over year to just $457.2M as borrowers have no reason to do student loan refinancings. Student loans accounted for an origination share of just 13% in Q3&#39;22, down from more than twice this amount in the year-earlier period. Subsequent extensions of the student loan moratorium are set to suppress SoFi&#39;s origination business for even longer which could result in growing valuation pressure on SoFi&#39;s shares.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01bcebc950934ba5879ae16288435bb6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"213\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>SoFi&#39;s Originations Business</span></p><p><b>Updated adjusted EBITDA guidance</b></p><p>Before the extension, I estimated that SoFi could generate $200M in adjusted EBITDA in FY 2023 which was based on the assumption that student loan payments would resume in January. This clearly is now no longer possible and I therefore have to take accountability and lower my estimate. I believe that SoFi may achieve adjusted EBITDA closer to $150M in FY 2023 as the moratorium will last at least through half of the next year.</p><p><b>SoFi&#39;s valuation remains attractive for long term investors</b></p><p>SoFi&#39; shares have revalued 71% to the down-side this year and the personal finance company is a major loser in my portfolio. However, I believe the FinTech&#39;s strong member and product growth help make a strong investment case for SoFi. Although growth is slowing, SoFi has no problems acquiring hundreds of thousands of new members a quarter.</p><p>SoFi is currently expected to generate $2.05B in revenues in FY 2023, implying 34% year over year top line growth. This year, SoFi is projected to grow its revenues by 50%. The FinTech is also expected to be profitable in FY 2024. Based off of revenues (since SoFi is not yet profitable), shares have a P/S ratio of 2.1 X which is 37% below the 1-year average P/S ratio.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9663839c3bc633e27b78be77943b64fd\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p><b>Risks with SoFi</b></p><p>Although SoFi is adding a significant number of new members to its platform each quarter, it is also true that the FinTech&#39;s growth is decelerating, post-pandemic. The personal finance company added 424 thousand new members to its ecosystem just in the third-quarter, but Q3&#39;22 was also the fifth straight quarter of revenue deceleration. SoFi benefited from a wave of customer sign-ups during the pandemic, but this period of hyper-growth is clearly coming to an end. Slowing top line growth is as big a risk for SoFi as another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium in June 2023 which would be set to hurt SoFi&#39;s student loan origination business.</p><p><b>Final thoughts</b></p><p>The Biden administration really dealt a blow to SoFi this week and I didn&#39;t expect the extension of the student loan moratorium at all. As a result, SoFi&#39;s adjusted EBITDA may not be as high as I estimated recently. While SoFi&#39;s earnings are only going to be pushed out in the future, the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium extension is a net-negative for SoFi and I was clearly wrong assuming that payments would resume in January. After listening to the conference call and reading through the presentation, press release, and Alex Karp&#39;s letter to shareholders, I believed there were many things to like, but the original thesis he outlined was changing.</p><p>Since 2022 isn&#39;t playing out according to plan, I need to take a step back and recalculate my projections. Thankfully, the Q3 conference call on 7 November went much better than Q2&#39;s, but the results weren&#39;t overwhelmingly good. For all of the powerful slides of information embedded within the presentation, the bottom line is that Palantir&#39;s revenue growth won&#39;t hit Alek Karp&#39;s projections, and their margins are being impacted. This is causing the narrative to change. PLTR could still become a great long-term investment, but in the short term, I think shareholders will need to endure unwanted volatility.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0bce4c6da47a33baf858c7b09566bba8\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"201\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><h2>The ugly part of Q3 and how it is making my projections change</h2><p>In Q2 of 2021, PLTR reinforced their long-term outlook of 30%+ revenue growth for 2021 and the next 4 years, bringing them through 2025. PLTR had projected that its 2021 Adjusted FCF (free cash flow) would exceed $300 million in 2021, which would be a 100% increase from its previous outlook. I dislike adjusted numbers and would rather look at straight FCF, which is cash from operations minus CapEx or purchases of property and equipment. In 2021, PLTR ended the year generating $1.54 billion in revenue and $321.22 million of FCF for an FCF margin of 20.83%.</p><p>I built a model based on PLTR&#39;s commentary and their 2021 FCF margin. In my model, which is below, I had PLTR&#39;s revenue grow by 30% through 2025, then drop down to 25%, 22%, 19%, 17%, and 15% from years 2026 - 2030. Based on 2021&#39;s FCF margin of 20.83%, if these revenue growth numbers were in the ballpark, PLTR would have generated $2.53 billion of FCF in 2030 from $12.16 billion of revenue. Based on a 25x FCF multiple, PLTR would have a $63.30 billion market cap; at a 35x multiple, PLTR would have an $88.62 billion market; and at a 45x multiple, PLTR would have a $113.94 billion market cap. While Q2 made me switch my view because I was worried about how PLTR would be perceived by potential customers, the future looked interesting as there was a clear roadmap to a much larger market cap into 2030 than PLTR had today. PLTR is now guiding for $1.9 billion of revenue as its midpoint for the fiscal year of 2022. This is a YoY increase of $359.10 million, which is a 23.29% growth rate. The other issue is that PLTR&#39;s FCF margin has declined in the first 9-months of operations from 21.07% in 2021 to 7.86% in 2022. In the first 9 months of operations in 2021, PLTR generated $1.11 billion of revenue and $233.64 million of FCF for a 21.07% FCF margin. YTD over the first 9 months of 2022, PLR&#39;s revenue has increased by 25.99% YoY ($288.23 million) to $1.4 billion, but its cash from operations has declined by -$95.45 million (-39.70%), and their CapEx has increased by $28.33 million (417.60%), placing its FCF at $109.87 million. PLTR&#39;s FCF margin has declined by -13.20 percentage points to 7.86% from 21.07% YoY. As an investor, I need to readjust my investment thesis based on the new information and determine if 2022 is an anomaly or a new normal.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e3d97f8eea6c89e38d0b039fe76b44b0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"210\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>I built 2 models to see where PLTR&#39;s numbers could go. My original cash flow projection called for $2.53 billion of FCF from $12.16 billion of revenue in 2030 based on 2021&#39;s FCF margin, and my revenue assumptions extrapolated past the 2025 projection from PLTR. In model 1, I chalked 2022 up to an anomaly. If I keep the revenue growth rate the same from 2023-2030 and the FCF margin the same as my previous figures, PLTR will generate $10.2 billion of revenue and $2.12 billion of FCF in 2030.</p><p>In model 2, I made the assumption that PLTR&#39;s revenue growth is downhill from here, and the entire thesis needs to change. 2022 is now projected to be a 23.29% YoY revenue growth rate for PLTR, so I projected accordingly. Instead of 30% growth rates for 2023 - 2025 ,I placed them at 20%, 20%, and 18%. Then I scaled down to 16%, 14%, 12%, 10%, and 8% for years 2026 - 2030. I completely speculated on the FCF margin and placed it at 10% for 2022, and looked at a 15% FCF margin for 2030. Based on these projections, PLTR would generate $5.68 billion of revenue in 2030 and produce $852.54 million of FCF.</p><p>I don&#39;t have a crystal ball, so I don&#39;t know which model is more accurate, but 2022 isn&#39;t what PLTR had hoped for, and it&#39;s certainly not what I had hoped for. PLTR is generating less cash from operations, and its margins are declining, especially its FCF margin. As an investor, I want to see as much cash and FCF generated from operations as possible, and if its revenue is increasing, I would hope that PLTR is generating additional cash from operations. There isn&#39;t enough data yet for me to lean in either direction, and I want to see how Q4 turns out and what the first half of 2023 looks like prior to making any decisions. PLTR is a growth company and they are competing against Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG,GOOGL), and the rest of Silicon Valley for software engineers, in addition to every other company for quality salespeople. I would much rather have PLTR tap the equity markets and issue stock-based compensation to fuel its growth instead of tapping the debt markets. I am willing to undergo some dilution for this as many other successful companies, including Tesla (TSLA), have operated in this fashion.</p><p>The problem is that there is no clear picture of how stock-based compensation is awarded to its employees. We see the line items of where it&#39;s expensed to, but we don&#39;t know how it&#39;s distributed. In the first 9 months of operations in 2022, stock-based comp has declined -$175.91 million (-28.78%) to $435.40 million YoY, and in Q3, it declined by -$44.53 million (-24.09%) to $140.31 million YoY. While PLTR is utilizing stock-based comp less and less, operationally, PLTR isn&#39;t hitting its metrics. Revenue growth is slowing and is projected to come in at 23.29% rather than 30% YoY in 2022, and net dollar retention is stalled at 119% for 2 quarters in a row.</p><p>As a shareholder, I am fine with PLTR as a growth company utilizing stock-based compensation if it&#39;s beneficial to the bottom line. In this case, I am not seeing PLTR deliver operationally, while shareholders are diluted and employees are rewarded with additional shares.</p><h2>By the numbers, 2022 isn&#39;t what I had hoped it would be, Q3 earnings weren&#39;t entirely bad, and Palantir still has tremendous potential, but the real question is, can they capitalize?</h2><p>Businesses look toward testimonials and customer feedback to provide validation for their product or service. When it comes to enterprise software, real-world use cases and an A-list of clients are critical for future growth. Palantir has changed up its marketing strategy and put together an entire conference called FoundryCon, which was tailored to the U.S commercial market and open to shareholders, global customers, the press, and the general public. Following the opening fireside talk between Alex Karp and Mike Allen (Co-Founder of Axios), presentations from the U.S. Space Systems Command and the National Cancer Institute were delivered, in addition to remarks from companies that included Jacobs, Morgan Stanley, Apache, and Tyson Foods.</p><p>Tyson Foods CTO Scott Spradley discussed the strategic outcomes that were achieved through transforming their business and generating $200 million in savings across 20 projects. John Rickerman from Jacobs highlighted that they are on track to save $300,000 annually at one of their sites, which was a 20% savings, and they have 300 sites where the same process can be replicated at. Colonel Jennifer Krolikowski stated that 15,000 people would not have been able to be evacuated from Afghanistan without utilizing PLTR&#39;s software.</p><p>PLTR is driving efficiencies and cost benefits for the largest companies and critical government agencies. PLTR is also one of three companies, which includes Amazon (AMZN) and MSFT, that have IL6 Provisional Authorization from the DOD. PLTR&#39;s testimonials are from the largest and most respected entities, and this certainly has an impact on future clients.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/871aee443bc3808cd89c5fc1e4ba2514\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"719\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>Once again, Alek Karp put one of the most bullish slides in the Q3 shareholder letter rather than the Q3 presentation. Quite frankly, this slide is something many investors are probably overlooking, and it is critical for the bull thesis. On a TTM basis in Q3 2020, PLTR&#39;s new customer base declined by -29.41%, as they only generated 12 new customers vs. 17 in the year prior. PLTR wasn&#39;t a well-known company in 2020, and for those who knew of PLTR, the common perception was that they were a black box company specializing in platforms for the military-industrial complex.</p><p>PLTR didn&#39;t go public until the fall of 2020, and after they did, their new customer base exploded as more information about PLTR was circulated, and companies saw successful use cases from their industry peers. In 2021 PLTR added 49 additional new customers on a TTM basis in Q3, up 408.33% YoY, as they finished with 61 new customers. In Q3 of 2022, PLTR experienced a huge increase in new customers. PLTR&#39;s new customer base in Q3 of 2022 on a TTM basis grew by 119.67% or 73 new customers YoY to 134.</p><p>I wasn&#39;t thrilled with the net dollar retention being stuck at 119% for 2 consecutive quarters, but seeing the cohort growth in new customers, there will be plenty of chances to upsell customers and add additional functionality to their contracts. Over the last 2 years, PLTR has added 195 new customers, and while new customer growth has decelerated on a percentage basis, it has increased in size YoY. Based on the previous 2 years, PLTR could end up having 450-500 customers by this time next year. If PLTR replicates its 134 new customer growth over the next 12 months, it will put them at 471 customers.</p><p>I was very critical of PLTR&#39;s revenue growth and margins due to the level of stock-based compensation that has been issued, but there is certainly a thesis that the growth hasn&#39;t materialized from their newest customers, and 2022 is an anomaly year from a revenue and margin standpoint.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40a0de766ef9082a731f07346df7c55b\" tg-width=\"539\" tg-height=\"262\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>No matter how I look at it, PLTR is growing, even though revenue growth will fall short of PLTR&#39;s previous projections. Q3 revenue is up 22% YoY, and the U.S. business is still exploding, as it&#39;s up 31% YoY. In Q3 PLTR&#39;s total contract value closed at $1.3 billion, while they closed 78 deals worth a minimum of $1 million. Of these 78 deals, 32 were at least worth $5 million, and 19 exceeded $10 million. PLTR ended Q3, having closed 273 deals YTD, which is up 63% YoY from 167 in 2021, which drove its total remaining deal value up 14% YoY to $4.1 billion.</p><p>For all of the shortcomings, there are many aspects to build a bullish thesis around. I am not closing the door on PLTR as I can argue a bullish case to myself in the same fashion I can create a doom and gloom scenario. At the end of the day, PLTR has $2.4 billion of cash on the balance sheet with $0 of debt and is well capitalized for the future. PLTR doesn&#39;t have a single concern with rising rates impacting their expenses, and there is a path to profitability and large amounts of FCF in the future. The only questions are, will PLTR continue growing in a similar fashion, and will its new customer base eventually drive additional net dollar retention levels?</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>As a reformed PLTR bull, I am currently neutral on the company. I would need to see revenue get back to the 30%+ projection, margins improve, and expenses either stay in-line or decrease to get bullish again.</p><p>That being said, I am not bearish and find Palantir&#39;s current valuation interesting. I plan on adding more shares and dollar cost averaging, as I am not ready to call it a loss and put this investment in the tax-loss harvesting bucket. I need 3 more quarters of data before making a final decision on PLTR, as there is still a path to billions of FCF in 2030, but the current revenue and margin declines are certainly concerning. I am willing to undergo some dilution for this as many other successful companies, including Tesla (TSLA), have operated in this fashion.The problem is that there is no clear picture of how stock-based compensation is awarded to its employees. We see the line items of where it's expensed to, but we don't know how it's distributed. In the first 9 months of operations in 2022, stock-based comp has declined -$175.91 million (-28.78%) to $435.40 million YoY, and in Q3, it declined by -$44.53 million (-24.09%) to $140.31 million YoY. While PLTR is utilizing stock-based comp less and less, operationally, PLTR isn't hitting its metrics. Revenue growth is slowing and is projected to come in at 23.29% rather than 30% YoY in 2022, and net dollar retention is stalled at 119% for 2 quarters in a row.As a shareholder, I am fine with PLTR as a growth company utilizing stock-based compensation if it's beneficial to the bottom line. In this case, I am not seeing PLTR deliver operationally, while shareholders are diluted and employees are rewarded with additional shares.By the numbers, 2022 isn't what I had hoped it would be, Q3 earnings weren't entirely bad, and Palantir still has tremendous potential, but the real question is, can they capitalize?Businesses look toward testimonials and customer feedback to provide validation for their product or service. When it comes to enterprise software, real-world use cases and an A-list of clients are critical for future growth. Palantir has changed up its marketing strategy and put together an entire conference called FoundryCon, which was tailored to the U.S commercial market and open to shareholders, global customers, the press, and the general public. Following the opening fireside talk between Alex Karp and Mike Allen (Co-Founder of Axios), presentations from the U.S. Space Systems Command and the National Cancer Institute were delivered, in addition to remarks from companies that included Jacobs, Morgan Stanley, Apache, and Tyson Foods.Tyson Foods CTO Scott Spradley discussed the strategic outcomes that were achieved through transforming their business and generating $200 million in savings across 20 projects. John Rickerman from Jacobs highlighted that they are on track to save $300,000 annually at one of their sites, which was a 20% savings, and they have 300 sites where the same process can be replicated at. Colonel Jennifer Krolikowski stated that 15,000 people would not have been able to be evacuated from Afghanistan without utilizing PLTR's software.PLTR is driving efficiencies and cost benefits for the largest companies and critical government agencies. PLTR is also one of three companies, which includes Amazon (AMZN) and MSFT, that have IL6 Provisional Authorization from the DOD. PLTR's testimonials are from the largest and most respected entities, and this certainly has an impact on future clients.PalantirOnce again, Alek Karp put one of the most bullish slides in the Q3 shareholder letter rather than the Q3 presentation. Quite frankly, this slide is something many investors are probably overlooking, and it is critical for the bull thesis. On a TTM basis in Q3 2020, PLTR's new customer base declined by -29.41%, as they only generated 12 new customers vs. 17 in the year prior. PLTR wasn't a well-known company in 2020, and for those who knew of PLTR, the common perception was that they were a black box company specializing in platforms for the military-industrial complex.PLTR didn't go public until the fall of 2020, and after they did, their new customer base exploded as more information about PLTR was circulated, and companies saw successful use cases from their industry peers. In 2021 PLTR added 49 additional new customers on a TTM basis in Q3, up 408.33% YoY, as they finished with 61 new customers. In Q3 of 2022, PLTR experienced a huge increase in new customers. PLTR's new customer base in Q3 of 2022 on a TTM basis grew by 119.67% or 73 new customers YoY to 134.I wasn't thrilled with the net dollar retention being stuck at 119% for 2 consecutive quarters, but seeing the cohort growth in new customers, there will be plenty of chances to upsell customers and add additional functionality to their contracts. Over the last 2 years, PLTR has added 195 new customers, and while new customer growth has decelerated on a percentage basis, it has increased in size YoY. Based on the previous 2 years, PLTR could end up having 450-500 customers by this time next year. If PLTR replicates its 134 new customer growth over the next 12 months, it will put them at 471 customers.I was very critical of PLTR's revenue growth and margins due to the level of stock-based compensation that has been issued, but there is certainly a thesis that the growth hasn't materialized from their newest customers, and 2022 is an anomaly year from a revenue and margin standpoint.PalantirNo matter how I look at it, PLTR is growing, even though revenue growth will fall short of PLTR's previous projections. Q3 revenue is up 22% YoY, and the U.S. business is still exploding, as it's up 31% YoY. In Q3 PLTR's total contract value closed at $1.3 billion, while they closed 78 deals worth a minimum of $1 million. Of these 78 deals, 32 were at least worth $5 million, and 19 exceeded $10 million. PLTR ended Q3, having closed 273 deals YTD, which is up 63% YoY from 167 in 2021, which drove its total remaining deal value up 14% YoY to $4.1 billion.For all of the shortcomings, there are many aspects to build a bullish thesis around. I am not closing the door on PLTR as I can argue a bullish case to myself in the same fashion I can create a doom and gloom scenario. At the end of the day, PLTR has $2.4 billion of cash on the balance sheet with $0 of debt and is well capitalized for the future. PLTR doesn't have a single concern with rising rates impacting their expenses, and there is a path to profitability and large amounts of FCF in the future. The only questions are, will PLTR continue growing in a similar fashion, and will its new customer base eventually drive additional net dollar retention levels?ConclusionAs a reformed PLTR bull, I am currently neutral on the company. I would need to see revenue get back to the 30%+ projection, margins improve, and expenses either stay in-line or decrease to get bullish again.That being said, I am not bearish and find Palantir's current valuation interesting. I plan on adding more shares and dollar cost averaging, as I am not ready to call it a loss and put this investment in the tax-loss harvesting bucket. I need 3 more quarters of data before making a final decision on PLTR, as there is still a path to billions of FCF in 2030, but the current revenue and margin declines are certainly concerning. While it may not make another big leap immediately, shares stand to do so down the road.Macro worries notwithstanding, the rapid adoption of EVs point to continued strong prospects ahead for this company, and for the stock. It may be getting close to exit the charging station. Let’s dive in, and find out why.TSLATesla$295.90A Closer Look at TSLA StockOverall market sentiment explains why Tesla shares find themselves rangebound at present. While there’s still positive news coming out of the company (more below), it’s not enough to counter the above-mentioned concerns.Again, this could continue for now with TSLA stock. More talk about a 2023 recession could result in it giving back some more of its August gains. So too, could further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.Rising interest rates will make more investors skeptical about whether it’s justified for shares to sport such a high earnings multiple. Right now, it trades for 69x forward earnings.Yet while this may make investing in Tesla frustrating at present, this frustration may not last long. We analyzed the EV market and Tesla&#39;s market positioning in theEV market in terms of its market share. We also looked into its technological capabilities and compared it against competitors in aspects such as the self-driving capability to determine its competitiveness in the EV market.</p><p>Moreover, we looked into its expansion overseas in Europe and Asia and analyzed the market growth outlook in these geographic regions compared to its home market in the US. Based on its expansions, we projected its automotive production and sales growth.</p><p>Lastly, we examined Tesla&#39;s supply chain and sourcing strategy as it increasingly moves to the in-house production of components. We analyzed its margins and estimated it going forward with the impact of its overseas production and internal production.</p><p><b>Leader In the Fast-Growing EV Industry</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f022e2a9bcb4c4b70c9a9c9fdcd00bf2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Company Data, Khaveen Investments</span></p><p>In 2021, Toyota (TM) held the title as the market leader of the automaker market with the highest share. This is followed by Volkswagen Group (OTCPK:VWAGY), Stellantis (STLA), General Motors (GM) and SAIC which made the top 5. The top 5 consisted of 2 automakers from the European and Asian geographic regions each with General Motors the only US company in the top 5. This is followed by the remaining 5 largest companies which are Honda (HMC), Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY), Ford (F), Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF) and Suzuki (OTCPK:SZKMF). Except for Ford (US-based), the rest of the automakers were based in Asia. This is followed by SAIC and Volkswagen which are both the largest in their home markets of China and Europe, respectively, followed by BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) and Hyundai in the top 5 EV automakers worldwide. In the US specifically, Tesla had dominated the US EV market as it retained its title as the market leader over the past 5 years. However, its market share decreased in 2021 with increasing competition from other automakers such as Chevrolet, FIAT, and Volvo (OTCPK:VOLAF), which gained market share. Globally, Tesla is the market leader in 2021 with the highest market share of unit sales.</p><p>To identify Tesla&#39;s market positioning and to compare it against competitors in the EV market, we compared it against competitors based on several factors including the number of EV model variants, range and average base price. According to data from InsideEVs, we compiled a total of 106 EV models from 18 different EV companies and calculated each of their number of EV model variants, average base prices and range. We plotted these data in the bubble chart below with the range and the number of models on both axes and the midpoints of each factor based on the median and the size of each bubble represented by their average base prices where we see the smaller the circle size, the stronger the advantage for the company.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8c46432d3ae2f9d42035308a4425a0bd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>InsideEVs, Khaveen Investments</span></p><p><i>*Circle size represents average base price</i></p><p>Based on the chart, Tesla is placed in the top right quadrant with a higher number of EV model variants such as the Model 3, S and X, than the midpoint of 4 models. Its average range is also above the midpoint, which is around 260 miles. We believe this highlights Tesla&#39;s strengths with a wide variety and above-average range. Besides Tesla, the companies in the top right quadrant are Lucid (LCID) Air, Kia, Hyundai and Ford. Meanwhile, in the bottom right quadrant, Porsche (OTCPK:POAHY), Audi (OTCPK:AUDVF) and Nissan are placed there with a high number of models but poor range. On the left side of the chart, most companies are in the top half (5 out of 9) and represented mostly by European-based automakers (6 out of 10) including Mercedes (OTCPK:DDAIF), BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), Polestar, Jaguar, Volvo and Volkswagen.</p><p>Moreover, in terms of pricing, the company with the highest average price in the chart is Lucid Air, which is lifted by its expensive Air DreamEditionbut with one of the highest battery capacities and range. Tesla&#39;s average price is lower than Lucid Air, Mercedes and Porsche, but has a wider variety with a higher number of EV models at 16 which is the second-highest behind Ford. On the other hand, Chevrolet and Mazda both have the lowest average price with a low average battery capacity of 65kWh and 35kWh which are the lowest and below the average of 88 kWh.</p><p>All in all, based on our chart, we believe Tesla is placed as the best in the EV market due to its high number of models, which is only behind Ford. However, Tesla edges out over Ford with a higher average range, thus we place Ford as the second best. Although Lucid Air has a better range than Tesla, we believe its high price is a disadvantage to Tesla and we ranked it as the third-best company. In contrast, we believe Mazda is placed in the worst position with a low number of models and poor range with tough competition at its price point from other competitors.</p><p>While we find that Tesla&#39;s pricing is generally higher than competitors, we also note its technological innovation. The company&#39;s EVs are equipped with its Autopilot technology to provide driverless assist capabilities using vision-based sensors. According to its annual report, it is also developing its full self-driving (&#39;FSD&#39;) capabilities running on neural networks in its vehicles and is currently in beta testing. According to its latest earnings briefing, the company highlighted its FSD program having over 100,000 people and it expects to expand this year.</p><p>However, several of its competitors also provide similar capabilities such as adaptive cruise control and lane-centering steering including Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche and Volkswagen. Besides that, Tesla also provides over-the-air updates to improve the vehicle functions of existing Tesla EVs. According to Munster, while other automakers also provide OTA updates, they are focused on infotainment features whereas Tesla extends these software updates for its EVs to improve range, power, braking, safety, and driver-assistance features.</p><p><b>Expansion into Europe and Other Countries</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/63321f487202232316b5fc1f4622231e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Tesla, Khaveen Investments</span></p><p>Tesla&#39;s largest geographic region based on its annual report is the US, which accounts for nearly half of its revenues, while China is its second-largest region with the remaining categorized as its Others segment. However, the company had been expanding its production facilities overseas with a Gigafactory in Germany which recentlyopenedwith a capacity of up to 500,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, North America where Tesla is based and derives 45% of revenue only represented 11% of the total market. Furthermore, both Europe and China have higher market forecast unit volume CAGR than North America and higher than the global average.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d10110c3aabbf8d7bf4bd6a09d8c71cc\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>InsideEVs</span></p><p>Based on InsideEVs, Tesla was the third largest EV company in China with a unit sales share of 10% in 2021 behind BYD and the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture which sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brands. Besides Tesla and Volkswagen, the largest companies are from China which highlights their home-field advantage. For Volkswagen, its popularity is supported by consumer preference for the European automaker&#39;s vehicles and SUVs according to AutoCar. Also, it is the largest EV automaker in Europe and the second-largest automaker in the world behind Toyota.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8f8a9a98c8f9eadce2400f8538bce7c6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>InsideEVs</span></p><p>Furthermore, the largest EV companies by unit sales in Europe were Volkswagen, Stellantis, Daimler, BMW and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Tesla had a smaller share than all of these competitors. Besides the Renault alliance, all of the companies were based in Europe which we believe highlights their home-field advantage. We believe the company&#39;s expansion overseas in China and Europe could bode well for the company to increase its presence in these regions through its new manufacturing sites to cater to demand and provide tailwinds as the two largest geographic markets for EV.</p><p>To forecast the company&#39;s automotive sales, we first forecasted its vehicle production growth based on its total capacity of 2,050 across its facilities in the US, Shanghai and Berlin. We assumed the company to reach this level by 2023 as it begins operations this year. Beyond 2023, we tapered down its growth to the market forecast volume CAGR of 21.7%. Our projections are close to management&#39;s guidance of more than 50% YoY growth for vehicle deliveries in 2022. According to Nikkei Asia, Lithium-ion batteries were estimated to account for 30% of EV costs. Back in 2019, CEO Elon Musk expected its Model 3 line&#39;s cost in China to be 50% lower than its US plants. As it expanded in the country which was ranked 5thin lowest manufacturing cost, it also expanded its local procurement such as through local battery supplier CATL (the largest EV battery maker in China with 48% share). In following its annual report, the company cited the decrease in cost per unit due to localized procurement and manufacturing in China.</p><blockquote>The average Model 3 and Model Y costs per unit have decreased significantly due to localized procurement and manufacturing in China despite rising raw material, commodity, logistics and expedite costs - Tesla Annual Report 2021</blockquote><p>Based on its annual report, the company depends on a select few suppliers for its lithium-ion battery cells. These include companies such as Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) (14.5%market share) and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) (31% global market share) which combined account for 45% of the market share. Thus, we believe this implies a risk to the company due to the high bargaining power of suppliers. Though, the company highlighted in its annual report its plan to shift to in-house production for its batteries and reduce its reliance on its suppliers. As the company increases in-house production, we believe this could reduce the risk of the company facing a margin squeeze by its battery suppliers.</p><blockquote>In the long term, we intend to supplement cells from our suppliers with cells manufactured by us, which we believe will be more efficient, manufacturable at greater volumes and more cost-effective than currently available cells. – Tesla Annual Report 2021</blockquote><p>According to Tesla&#39;s CEO, the company was estimated to produce 100-gigawatt hours of its 4680 battery cells in 2022 which could support 1.3 mln vehicles and aimed to halve its costs. Moreover, the company recently also announced that it will be sourcing battery components such as graphite from Mozambique, the world&#39;s second-largest graphite producer (11%share) after China (59%) through an agreement with Syrah Resources (OTCPK:SYAAF) with plans to purchase 80% of its production from 2025. According to Argus, Syrah Resources&#39; graphite project is the world&#39;s largest integrated natural graphite mining and processing operation. Moreover, graphite price had surged by over 50% last year and Consultancy Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI) expects the supply shortage for graphite to continue in 2022 with a 20,000-tonne graphite deficit. Thus, we view this move favourably for the company to secure long-term supply amid the industry shortage and potentially mitigate rising cost pressures.</p><p>Overall, we expect Tesla&#39;s shift towards in-house production to benefit the company and increase its bargaining power over suppliers. We projected its gross margins based on its COGS per vehicle as its COGS per vehicle had declined by -5.8% on a 5-year historical average and we expect the company to continue reducing its cost per vehicle as it increases its production in scale. We believe this is appropriate given the company&#39;s multiple drivers, which we highlighted were its expansion in China and in-house production of batteries. In 2021, its accrued warranty balance was $2.1 bln, which represented 3.9% of its total revenue and a decrease from 4.7% in the prior year. We believe that future product recalls could increase its expenses and affect company profitability.</p><p>Tesla had recently announced a product recall for 579,000 vehicles, which we calculated to be around 26% of total Tesla deliveries since 2016 of 2.2 mln vehicles, in the US due to a violation of federal safety standards over its Boombox sound functions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company shall disable the Boombox function when the vehicle is in drive, reverse or neutral over an over-the-air software update. Thus, we believe this could arise additional expenses for the company. Based on the company&#39;s warranty expense of $0.579 mln in 2021 and its total vehicle deliveries of 2.2 mln since 2016, we estimate the average warranty expense per vehicle to be $137. Assuming this as the expense incurred with the product recall for 579,000 vehicles, we derived an estimated cost impact of $53.8 mln, which is only 0.3% of revenue.</p><p><b>Valuation</b></p><p>To value the company, we used a comparable valuation based on the P/S of its automotive competitors. First, we compiled our revenue projections for the company in the table below with the automotive sales forecast summarized as discussed in the previous points above. Besides that, we also highlighted its advantage in terms of its software and self-driving capabilities and features which we believe could provide it with an edge over competitors. As Tesla expands overseas in Europe and China which combined account for over 85% of the EV market, we expect the company&#39;s expansion to support its growth with a projected sales growth of 47.6% in 2022. Additionally, we believe the company&#39;s expansion in China which its CEO previously stated to be 50% lower than the US and shift towards in-house could boost its margins going forward and we projected its gross and net margins to reach 43% and 23.5% respectively, assuming its COGS per vehicle continues to decrease by -5.8% through 2026. Based on its expansions, we projected its automotive production and sales growth.Lastly, we examined Tesla's supply chain and sourcing strategy as it increasingly moves to the in-house production of components. We believe the October move was fueled in large part by the shift in momentum away from Democrats and back towards Republicans that we started to see in polling data and betting markets that was building in August and September,” said Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, in a Monday note.</p><p>If so, the bounce, which comes after the bear market for equities took the S&amp;P 500 to its lowest close in nearly two years, is in keeping with market history that shows equities tend to see their best post-election performance in split-government scenarios, particularly when a Democratic president is paired with a congress in which either the House or Senate or both are controlled by Republicans (see chart below).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ead9f59539510e3a1baedc36b930a711\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"468\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>RBC CAPITAL MARKETS</span></p><p>More broadly, stocks have done well in the one-year period after a midterm election dating back to 1950, with nearly identical figures under Democratic and Republican presidents, LPL strategists Barry Gilbert and Jeffrey Buchbinder observed in a Monday note.</p><p>They acknowledge, however, that the sample size is nonetheless limited. And past results, of course, are no guarantee of future results.</p><p>Democrats hold a slim majority in the House and control a 50-50 Senate by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote. Polls and prediction markets point to Republicans likely taking control of the House and holding a good chance of winning control of the Senate.</p><p>So what do the possible outcomes of the election mean for equities?</p><p>A split Congress, with Republicans winning the House but the Senate staying under Democratic control would likely result in a “mild rally,” said Tom Essaye, founder of Sevens Report Research, in a Tuesday note. A Republican sweep of both houses would likely produce the same result, he predicted.</p><p>“Markets in general prefer split governments as it reduces any policy risk from increases in taxes, but that’s especially true now as any increases in spending could also add to inflation and spike rates,” he wrote. “A split government eliminates that risk and markets will embrace that likely via a mild rally,” if the GOP takes the House but not the Senate.</p><p>“We’d expect stocks to rally broadly but not materially,” he said.</p><p>In that scenario, technology could outperform over the short term, bouncing back from oversold conditions. Treasury yields and the ICE U.S. Dollar Index should decline modestly, while commodities would likely be in for a small bounce.</p><p>RBC’s Calvasina argued that a Republican sweep of both the House and Senate would be more significant for the stock market since GOP chances of taking back the Senate have generally been viewed as lower than their chances of taking back the House.</p><p>“We also think that if Republicans take back control of both chambers, it will be viewed by equity market participants as pointing to good momentum for Republicans heading into the presidential race in 2024,” she said. “To the extent that 2022 turns out to be a wave election for Republicans, the bigger the wave, the more impactful we think it will be for U.S. equities in the short term and into next year.”</p><p>Essaye, however, argued that if Republicans win both the House and Senate, he would “expect almost the exact same market reaction as if the Republicans win just the House, because winning the Senate won’t result in any practical difference,” he said.</p><p>For a Republican sweep to make a material difference, the part would need a two-thirds veto-proof majority in both the House and Senate, “and there is literally 0% chance of that happening,” Essaye wrote.</p><p>If Democrats managed to hold off Republicans in both the House and Senate, the reaction is likely to be a “moderate decline,” he said. A broad fall for equities would likely be led by tech and high-growth sectors, while Treasury yields would likely see a modest rise and the dollar index would bounce, putting pressure on commodities.</p><p>There’s also the possibility that the full outcome of the election won’t be known soon. A close-fought Senate election in Georgia could go to a December runoff. It’s possible Senate control could hinge on the result.</p><p>The bottom line, Essaye wrote, is that the election is unlikely to be a bullish game-changer for stocks still mired in a bear market.</p><p>“The key to a real, sustainable rally in this market remains a decline in CPI (coming Thursday) and a Fed pivot (not coming anytime soon). The extension is set to push out SoFi&#39;s earnings fromits student loan business further out into the future and it limits new student loan refinancings. While I have to adjust my EBITDA outlook for next year, I still believe that SoFi has considerable potential to become a major player in the FinTech space over the long term. Because of the unexpected extension of the student loan moratorium, I am changing my rating on SoFi from buy to hold!</p><p><b>Another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium</b></p><p>The repayment of student loans was first frozen in FY 2020 in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was meant to provide financial relief for student loan borrowers at a time when the US economy was shut down. The US government subsequently extended the student loan payment pause multiple times. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced that it was yet again extending the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium from December 2022 to June 2023, meaning SoFi will continue to see a delay in student loan repayments which limits the FinTech&#39;s earnings potential in FY 2023.</p><p>Because student loans are a big business for SoFi, the extension of the student loan moratorium in April of this year specifically resulted in SoFi massively down-grading its net revenue and adjusted EBITDA outlook for FY 2022. The personal finance company at the time reduced its net revenue outlook from $1.57B to $1.47B and its adjusted EBITDA guidance from $180M to just $100M, showing a decrease of $80M. SoFi later raised its FY 2022 guidance to account for strong member and product growth as well as improving customer monetization.</p><p>Repeated extensions of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium have resulted in a major decline in SoFi&#39;s student loan business. Originations of student loans were a key driver of growth for SoFi before the pandemic, but the current situation has not helped the business very much. In the third-quarter, SoFi&#39;s student loan originations dropped 53% year over year to just $457.2M as borrowers have no reason to do student loan refinancings. Student loans accounted for an origination share of just 13% in Q3&#39;22, down from more than twice this amount in the year-earlier period. Subsequent extensions of the student loan moratorium are set to suppress SoFi&#39;s origination business for even longer which could result in growing valuation pressure on SoFi&#39;s shares.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01bcebc950934ba5879ae16288435bb6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"213\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>SoFi&#39;s Originations Business</span></p><p><b>Updated adjusted EBITDA guidance</b></p><p>Before the extension, I estimated that SoFi could generate $200M in adjusted EBITDA in FY 2023 which was based on the assumption that student loan payments would resume in January. This clearly is now no longer possible and I therefore have to take accountability and lower my estimate. I believe that SoFi may achieve adjusted EBITDA closer to $150M in FY 2023 as the moratorium will last at least through half of the next year.</p><p><b>SoFi&#39;s valuation remains attractive for long term investors</b></p><p>SoFi&#39; shares have revalued 71% to the down-side this year and the personal finance company is a major loser in my portfolio. However, I believe the FinTech&#39;s strong member and product growth help make a strong investment case for SoFi. Although growth is slowing, SoFi has no problems acquiring hundreds of thousands of new members a quarter.</p><p>SoFi is currently expected to generate $2.05B in revenues in FY 2023, implying 34% year over year top line growth. This year, SoFi is projected to grow its revenues by 50%. The FinTech is also expected to be profitable in FY 2024. Based off of revenues (since SoFi is not yet profitable), shares have a P/S ratio of 2.1 X which is 37% below the 1-year average P/S ratio.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9663839c3bc633e27b78be77943b64fd\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p><b>Risks with SoFi</b></p><p>Although SoFi is adding a significant number of new members to its platform each quarter, it is also true that the FinTech&#39;s growth is decelerating, post-pandemic. The personal finance company added 424 thousand new members to its ecosystem just in the third-quarter, but Q3&#39;22 was also the fifth straight quarter of revenue deceleration. SoFi benefited from a wave of customer sign-ups during the pandemic, but this period of hyper-growth is clearly coming to an end. Slowing top line growth is as big a risk for SoFi as another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium in June 2023 which would be set to hurt SoFi&#39;s student loan origination business.</p><p><b>Final thoughts</b></p><p>The Biden administration really dealt a blow to SoFi this week and I didn&#39;t expect the extension of the student loan moratorium at all. As a result, SoFi&#39;s adjusted EBITDA may not be as high as I estimated recently. While SoFi&#39;s earnings are only going to be pushed out in the future, the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium extension is a net-negative for SoFi and I was clearly wrong assuming that payments would resume in January. The extension is set to push out SoFi's earnings fromits student loan business further out into the future and it limits new student loan refinancings. While I have to adjust my EBITDA outlook for next year, I still believe that SoFi has considerable potential to become a major player in the FinTech space over the long term. Because of the unexpected extension of the student loan moratorium, I am changing my rating on SoFi from buy to hold!Another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment MoratoriumThe repayment of student loans was first frozen in FY 2020 in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was meant to provide financial relief for student loan borrowers at a time when the US economy was shut down. The US government subsequently extended the student loan payment pause multiple times. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced that it was yet again extending the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium from December 2022 to June 2023, meaning SoFi will continue to see a delay in student loan repayments which limits the FinTech's earnings potential in FY 2023.Because student loans are a big business for SoFi, the extension of the student loan moratorium in April of this year specifically resulted in SoFi massively down-grading its net revenue and adjusted EBITDA outlook for FY 2022. The personal finance company at the time reduced its net revenue outlook from $1.57B to $1.47B and its adjusted EBITDA guidance from $180M to just $100M, showing a decrease of $80M. SoFi later raised its FY 2022 guidance to account for strong member and product growth as well as improving customer monetization.Repeated extensions of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium have resulted in a major decline in SoFi's student loan business. Originations of student loans were a key driver of growth for SoFi before the pandemic, but the current situation has not helped the business very much. In the third-quarter, SoFi's student loan originations dropped 53% year over year to just $457.2M as borrowers have no reason to do student loan refinancings. Student loans accounted for an origination share of just 13% in Q3'22, down from more than twice this amount in the year-earlier period. Subsequent extensions of the student loan moratorium are set to suppress SoFi's origination business for even longer which could result in growing valuation pressure on SoFi's shares.SoFi's Originations BusinessUpdated adjusted EBITDA guidanceBefore the extension, I estimated that SoFi could generate $200M in adjusted EBITDA in FY 2023 which was based on the assumption that student loan payments would resume in January. This clearly is now no longer possible and I therefore have to take accountability and lower my estimate. I believe that SoFi may achieve adjusted EBITDA closer to $150M in FY 2023 as the moratorium will last at least through half of the next year.SoFi's valuation remains attractive for long term investorsSoFi' shares have revalued 71% to the down-side this year and the personal finance company is a major loser in my portfolio. However, I believe the FinTech's strong member and product growth help make a strong investment case for SoFi. Although growth is slowing, SoFi has no problems acquiring hundreds of thousands of new members a quarter.SoFi is currently expected to generate $2.05B in revenues in FY 2023, implying 34% year over year top line growth. This year, SoFi is projected to grow its revenues by 50%. The FinTech is also expected to be profitable in FY 2024. Based off of revenues (since SoFi is not yet profitable), shares have a P/S ratio of 2.1 X which is 37% below the 1-year average P/S ratio.Data by YChartsRisks with SoFiAlthough SoFi is adding a significant number of new members to its platform each quarter, it is also true that the FinTech's growth is decelerating, post-pandemic. The personal finance company added 424 thousand new members to its ecosystem just in the third-quarter, but Q3'22 was also the fifth straight quarter of revenue deceleration. SoFi benefited from a wave of customer sign-ups during the pandemic, but this period of hyper-growth is clearly coming to an end. Slowing top line growth is as big a risk for SoFi as another extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium in June 2023 which would be set to hurt SoFi's student loan origination business.Final thoughtsThe Biden administration really dealt a blow to SoFi this week and I didn't expect the extension of the student loan moratorium at all. As a result, SoFi's adjusted EBITDA may not be as high as I estimated recently. While SoFi's earnings are only going to be pushed out in the future, the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium extension is a net-negative for SoFi and I was clearly wrong assuming that payments would resume in January.
