Having repeatedly received questions as to what exactly will happen to shares of Google in a recession, I&#39;ve decided to come up with an analysis of an absolute worst case scenario for 2023.</p><h2>Digital advertising in 2022</h2><p>It&#39;s important to first understand the state of the digital advertising sector to get a sense of how things are progressing in a post-Covid environment. While all players in the space saw positive top-line growth in 1Q22, challenges began to surface in Q2 as companies lapped tough 2021 comps. More importantly, the outlook provided by most management teams was frankly terrifying.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d88511c646d4175530a996f92cfa8a85\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Company, consensus estimates, Albert Lin</p><p></p><p>Meta (META), the largest social media platform in the world, reported negative revenue growth in Q2 and provided Q3 revenue guidance that was 10% below Street estimates as management pointed to worsening macro conditions. Snap&#39;s (SNAP) revenue growth fell off a cliff in Q2 as CEO Spiegel cited a challenging macro from inflation to the Russia-Ukraine crisis and did not provide Q3 guidance. While Roku&#39;s (ROKU) ad revenue grew 26% in Q2, guidance for the current quarter was &gt;20% below consensus as the team blamed on a weak scatter market and subsequently canceled its full year 2022 outlook. The Trade Desk (TTD) was a blossom in the dessert with 30% growth in Q2 and a beat in Q3 guide was a major surprise to the Street, but that doesn&#39;t make Q4 any more predictable given the current economic outlook.</p><p>On the bottom end of the marketing funnel where advertisers are more focused on conversion over impression, Amazon Advertising (AMZN) proved to be highly resilient as consumers are literally standing in front of sellers on the e-commerce site. As much of a giant as Google is, Q2 Search revenue still grew 14% following 24% in Q1. Predicting 2H22 growth was a difficult exercise for analysts as management didn&#39;t provide quantitative guides, so the Street isn&#39;t getting its hopes up as Search revenue grew 44%/36% in 3Q/4Q21.</p><p>In short, what one can easily conclude for the digital advertising space (as well as for most industries) is that winter is here, and the setup for 2023 doesn&#39;t look so good as the economy is heading into a recession if not already in one. The question now becomes: what will Google look like in a 2023 recession?</p><h2>Coming up with the worst case scenario</h2><p>While there are no perfect methods to accurately forecast Google&#39;s top and bottom line in a recession (since we have no idea how bad things will be), we can first borrow from history that Google obviously experienced a meaningful decline in revenue growth during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis driven by indiscriminate mortgage lending in the United States of America. Throughout the crisis, Google saw its quarterly revenue growth decelerate materially from +42% in 1Q08 to +18% in 4Q08 and eventually bottomed out at +3% in 2Q09 before re-accelerating to +7% in 3Q09 and +17% 4Q09. For the entire 2008 and 2009, however, revenue still grew 9% and 8%, a highly respectable feat as the world was literally falling apart.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/762c70d4d4202f1382880c6c8ff279e2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Company data, Albert Lin</p><p>As bleak as things were, what was frankly a positive surprise to investors was that Google was able to protect its operating margin by containing costs throughout the global recession. While year-over-year top-line growth slowed from over 40% to single digits, changes in operating expenses were largely in line with revenue. OPEX actually declined for two consecutive quarters in 2009 and only ramped up in Q4 when revenue growth was back to double digits.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b0db9de48c20d2d341cd29315ee5177f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Company data, Albert Lin</p><p>Now that we have a basic understanding of how Google fared in the 2008 recession, we can assume with some degree of confidence that Google will at least be able to demonstrate flexibility on the expense side of the equation should top-line growth begin to slow materially in the next (or current) recession.</p><p>The question now is how much revenue growth will fall. Since digital advertising was still in its infancy back in 2008, it&#39;s conceivable that digital ad budgets will likely experience a bigger impact today given the &gt;65% penetration vs. 12% back then. For this reason, we can probably imagine a worst case scenario of 0% revenue growth in 2023 vs. +8% in 2009. Given Google is still very much an advertising company, we will focus exclusively on the Google Services segment (90% of revenue) for now.</p><p>The current 2022 consensus calls for Google Services revenue of ~$264 billion, which implies an 11% YoY growth on an exceptional 41% growth in 2021. Operating income is estimated to come in at ~$95 billion for an EBIT margin of 36% vs. 39% in 2021. With an effective tax rate of 16%, Google Services should generate net income of ~$80 billion and EPS of $6.09 in 2022.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9e0b914de067418218358e4b8bf67149\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Company data, Albert Lin</p><p>Based on how Google managed costs during the 2008 recession, I&#39;d expect OPEX growth to stay flat just like revenue, leading to an EBIT margin of 36% in 2023. Already, CEO Sundar Pichai has indicated that he wants to make Google 20% more efficient. Assume the same 16% tax rate, this should come down to an estimated EPS of $6.26. The ~3% increase in EPS primarily comes from buybacks, for which Google has plenty of financial firepower. At the end of 2Q22, Google had $58.9 billion remaining in its buyback program after approving $70 billion for share repurchase in April 2022. There&#39;s $125 billion of cash on the balance sheet, which indicates a strong possibility for more buybacks in the future.</p><p>During the Global Financial Crisis, Google&#39;s P/E multiple contracted from 33x in 4Q07 to 12x in 4Q08. Applying the same trough multiple of 12x, we can arrive at a per share value of $75 for Google Services in 2023. At this price, markets should have sufficiently priced in a full blown recession and investors would theoretically be paying $0 for Google Cloud and Other Bets.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af898d136c328d1e49059b6da2263234\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"378\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Company data, Albert Lin</p><p>It&#39;s unclear how Google Cloud will perform in a recession given cloud migration is more of a structural vs. cyclical story, but suppose Google Cloud grows 30% in 2022 and growth gets cut in half to 15% in 2023, Cloud revenue is estimated at $28.7 billion or $2.24 on a per share basis next year. Applying a depressed 2x P/S multiple should give us a value of $4 a share. Taken altogether, <b>we should have a worst case scenario of $79 for Google&#39;s shares in a recessionary environment.</b></p><h2>Final thoughts</h2><p>The bad news is Google&#39;s stock may have a 20% downside if markets are to price in a full-blown recession. The good news is Google was able to demonstrate strong resiliency in managing its bottom line in the last economic recession. I&#39;ve visited Thailand and Philippines over the years and you will see green Grab delivery riders everywhere.</p><p>The company is so dominant that Uber (UBER) sold its operations to Grab and bought a stake in the company as a blatant surrender move.</p><p>In this article, I&#39;ll give you a general breakdown of Grab and share several reasons why I&#39;m bullish on the company long term.</p><h2>Grab Overview</h2><p>Grab was founded in 2016 by Singapore Billionaire Anthony Tan who had a vision of building a super-app for Southeast Asia.</p><p>Southeast Asia is made up of 8 countries and has a total population of 683 million people.</p><p>It&#39;s one of the fastest growing economies in the world thanks to massive technological advances and foreign investment.</p><p>Grab operates in 4 key segments: Delivery, Mobility, Financial Services, and Enterprise Services (Advertising for businesses).</p><p>The American ride sharing &amp; food delivery industry has many competitors such as Uber, Lyft (LYFT), DoorDash (DASH), and several other small companies who compete aggressively for the huge $ tide sharing market.</p><p>On the other hand, Grab only has 1 competitor in Southeast Asia called Foodpanda, a smaller company based out of Europe.</p><h2>Record Q2 Revenue and GMV</h2><p>The company hit record Q2 revenue of $321 million (Up 79% YoY) along with record Q2 GMV of $5.1 billion (Up 30% YoY).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aca6a4b7afe32d866b123c7ad3bc5973\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"356\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Financials (grab.com)</span></p><p>Monthly Transacting Users (MTAs) reached 32.6 million (Up 12% YoY) with 62% of users using 2 or more services on the app.</p><p>Net losses were $572 million, which was a 27% improvement from Q2 2021.</p><p>Grab continues to grow its MTA and establish a massive footprint in Southeast Asia. I don&#39;t see any competitors taking market share from the company right now and Grab will be able to raise prices to adjust for inflation to keep both merchants and consumers on a level playing field.</p><h2>Deliveries</h2><p>Delivery revenue grew 199% YoY and makes up nearly 50% of the company&#39;s revenue and Grab just announced a new partnership with Coca-Cola (KO) in August 2022 to offer more of its products on the app.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9aa62bcd9e18dd9dc1501b4a322358\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"260\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Deliveries (grab.com)</span></p><p>Grocery &amp; food delivery is a stable and lucrative business that the company can continue profiting from. GETTY IMAGES</span></p><p>Chief Executive Tim Cook didn’t show off “one more thing” on Wednesday, but he did have one new Apple Inc. offering to share: reasonable pricing.</p><p>Apple has long shown a willingness to charge premium prices for its iPhones, including breaking the $1,000 barrier a few years back with the iPhone X, and was expected to increase prices on the smartphones again with the iPhone 14 unveiling on Wednesday. Cook kept the price the same as the last two iPhone models, however, and even added in some other deals: Free satellite emergency service for two years, and an update to Apple Care+ to remove a limit on the number of repairs each year.</p><p>“It was a shock, I thought a $100 price increase was a foregone conclusion,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Apple read the room and Cook didn’t want to raise prices.”</p><p>At the very least, analysts expected Apple to increase prices on its top-end smartphones, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. Maribel Lopez, principal analyst at Lopez Research, said she had been hearing talk of price hikes of up to several hundred dollars that would “fork the line,” or allow greater separation between lower-priced and premium offerings.</p><p>“This was their opportunity, they were going to fork the line, and have very affordable and very flagship, and that was surprising that didn’t happen,” Lopez said. “I think that is the right move. It’s becoming difficult to get people to upgrade, they hold onto them longer, they are not inexpensive.”</p><p>The concern for investors from this move would be Apple’s profit margin. Record inflation has not just hit consumers — electronics manufacturers are seeing higher prices and uncertain supply of many components. The 15-year-old iPhone family is still Apple’s biggest revenue and profit generator, even as it is a mature product, so a margin decline would be felt acutely on the overall bottom line.</p><p>Lopez and Ives said the move should not be too much of a drag on Apple’s margins, however, thanks to strength with suppliers and a move toward using Apple’s own semiconductors.</p><p>“They have more control over their supply chain,” Ives said, adding that “the Apple silicon gives them flexibility.”</p><p>“Everything being an A or an M chip, that allows them a certain flexibility,” Lopez said. “It’s a classic vertical integration strategy.”</p><p>Apple unveiled some new offerings that were not price-related, mostly features targeted at increasingly specific audiences, such as the Apple Ultra Watch for serious fitness enthusiasts. But Cook again didn’t take the opportunity to use co-founder Steve Jobs’ product-launch catchphrase, “one more thing,” at the end of an unveiling to show off the next big product — even though Apple may have a big launch on the way.</p><p>Apple reportedly is working on three sets of augmented/virtual-reality glasses, with one expected to launch next year and compete with Meta Platforms Inc.’s Oculus offerings. It would be only the second major product category to launch under Cook’s leadership, beside the Apple Watch.</p><p>But Apple never shows off the next big thing without a fully formed product ready to roll. So instead, Cook is just trying to keep consumers happy with new iPhones — at flat prices with better cameras, longer battery life and new features — until its next foray is actually ready.</p><p>That doesn’t do much for investors, though. Says Analyst</b>  Sources: StreetInsider</p><p>Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) held its first in-person product launch event since before the pandemic Wednesday afternoon with the highly anticipated iPhone 14 launch.</p><p>While the iPhone 14 was front and center at the launch event, Apple also announced a raft of other products and updates, including the Apple Watch Series 8 and the enhanced AirPods Pro 2.</p><p>The iPhone 14 series includes the general model, the 14 Plus, the 14 Pro, and the 14 Pro Max.Apple said the 14 and 14 Plus models include the A15 Bionic chip with a 5-core GPU, while the 14 Pro and Pro Max are powered by A16 Bionic, the fastest chip ever in a smartphone.</p><p>Furthermore, Apple announced new satellite-enabled services for some of its products, with Globalstar, a satellite communications firm, managing the satellite-powered emergency SOS service.</p><p>Apple will pay 95% of the approved capital spending Globalstar makes in connection with the new satellites, according to a filing.It also states that they are expected to make the services available to customers during the fourth quarter of 2022.</p><p>Globalstar shares surged following the news earlier today but closed the session down 1.4%.</p><p>Reacting to the Apple announcements and event, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives, who has an Outperform rating and a $220 price target on the stock, said, &#34;the Apple Watch and AirPods have transformed from a rounding error to a significant tangential product segment at Apple.&#34;</p><p>He added that it speaks to the monetization of a golden 1.8 billion iOS installed base that remains &#34;unmatched globally.&#34;</p><p>&#34;Taking a step back, launching 3 new core hardware products within the Apple ecosystem despite the biggest supply chain crisis seen in modern history is a major feat for Cook &amp; Co., especially with the zero Covid shutdowns in China seen in April/May,&#34; he added.</p><p>Commenting specifically on the iPhone 14 launch, Ives stated they believe the &#34;initial order for 90 million iPhone 14 units out of the gates with Asian suppliers has stayed firm&#34; Cook kept the price the same as the last two iPhone models, however, and even added in some other deals: Free satellite emergency service for two years, and an update to Apple Care+ to remove a limit on the number of repairs each year.“It was a shock, I thought a $100 price increase was a foregone conclusion,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Apple read the room and Cook didn’t want to raise prices.”At the very least, analysts expected Apple to increase prices on its top-end smartphones, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. Maribel Lopez, principal analyst at Lopez Research, said she had been hearing talk of price hikes of up to several hundred dollars that would “fork the line,” or allow greater separation between lower-priced and premium offerings.“This was their opportunity, they were going to fork the line, and have very affordable and very flagship, and that was surprising that didn’t happen,” Lopez said. “I think that is the right move. It’s becoming difficult to get people to upgrade, they hold onto them longer, they are not inexpensive.”The concern for investors from this move would be Apple’s profit margin. Record inflation has not just hit consumers — electronics manufacturers are seeing higher prices and uncertain supply of many components. Cook kept the price the same as the last two iPhone models, however, and even added in some other deals: Free satellite emergency service for two years, and an update to Apple Care+ to remove a limit on the number of repairs each year.</p><p>“It was a shock, I thought a $100 price increase was a foregone conclusion,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Apple read the room and Cook didn’t want to raise prices.”</p><p>At the very least, analysts expected Apple to increase prices on its top-end smartphones, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. Maribel Lopez, principal analyst at Lopez Research, said she had been hearing talk of price hikes of up to several hundred dollars that would “fork the line,” or allow greater separation between lower-priced and premium offerings.</p><p>“This was their opportunity, they were going to fork the line, and have very affordable and very flagship, and that was surprising that didn’t happen,” Lopez said. “I think that is the right move. It’s becoming difficult to get people to upgrade, they hold onto them longer, they are not inexpensive.”</p><p>The concern for investors from this move would be Apple’s profit margin. Record inflation has not just hit consumers — electronics manufacturers are seeing higher prices and uncertain supply of many components. The 15-year-old iPhone family is still Apple’s biggest revenue and profit generator, even as it is a mature product, so a margin decline would be felt acutely on the overall bottom line.</p><p>Lopez and Ives said the move should not be too much of a drag on Apple’s margins, however, thanks to strength with suppliers and a move toward using Apple’s own semiconductors.</p><p>“They have more control over their supply chain,” Ives said, adding that “the Apple silicon gives them flexibility.”</p><p>“Everything being an A or an M chip, that allows them a certain flexibility,” Lopez said. “It’s a classic vertical integration strategy.”</p><p>Apple unveiled some new offerings that were not price-related, mostly features targeted at increasingly specific audiences, such as the Apple Ultra Watch for serious fitness enthusiasts. But Cook again didn’t take the opportunity to use co-founder Steve Jobs’ product-launch catchphrase, “one more thing,” at the end of an unveiling to show off the next big product — even though Apple may have a big launch on the way.</p><p>Apple reportedly is working on three sets of augmented/virtual-reality glasses, with one expected to launch next year and compete with Meta Platforms Inc.’s Oculus offerings. Disney Co. is exploring a membership program that could offer discounts or special perks to encourage customers to spend more on its streaming services, theme parks, resorts and merchandise, according to people familiar with the discussions.</p><p>The program would be somewhat akin to Amazon Prime, which offers advantages such as free shipping, discounts at Whole Foods and a complementary streaming video service for a monthly or annual fee, the people said. Internally, some executives have referred to Disney&#39;s initiative as &#34;Disney Prime,&#34; although that won&#39;t be the name of the program, one of the people said.</p><p>Discussions at Disney are in the early stages. It couldn&#39;t be learned how much the company would charge for membership and how long it would take to launch such a program.</p><p>By creating a membership program, Disney would be betting it could offer customers more value, prompting them to spend more on the company&#39;s products and services, while providing Disney with a trove of information about their preferences.</p><p>The effort is supported by Disney Chief Executive Bob Chapek, who has been vocal both internally and publicly about the opportunity for Disney to do more to cross-sell to customers, the people familiar with the discussions said.</p><p>&#34;Technology is giving us new ways to customize and personalize the consumer experience so that we are delivering entertainment, experiences and products that are most relevant to each of our guests,&#34; said Kristina Schake, senior executive vice president and chief communications officer at Disney, in a statement. &#34;A membership program is just one of the exciting ideas that is being explored.&#34;</p><p>Disney already has a special program for superfans, the D23 Official Fan Club, which costs $99.99 to $129.99 a year and comes with access to exclusive events and merchandise. That program offered members a discounted three-year subscription to Disney+ in 2019. A new membership program would be different in that it would be targeted at more casual Disney fans and customers.</p><p>As an early step to better link Disney products and services, Disney is working to enable subscribers to its Disney+ streaming service to buy merchandise such as t-shirts, themed accessories and children&#39;s costumes associated with some of its shows by scanning a QR code on the service that links to the Shop Disney website, people familiar with the plan said.</p><p>One example that executives have discussed as a possible merchandise tie-in is offering an exclusive toy version of a &#34;darksaber&#34; -- a weapon from the Star Wars-themed series &#34;The Mandalorian&#34; -- for sale only to Disney+ subscribers, a person familiar with the plans said. The company expects to introduce the retail feature on Disney+ as soon as this year.</p><p>Disney has a range of products and services based on its vast stable of entertainment content. In addition to its movies and streaming programming, the company has theme parks and sells a host of travel experiences, from cruises to private-jet trips, as well as clothing and toys.</p><p>Mr. Chapek in May highlighted Disney&#39;s &#34;unique synergy machine, or franchise flywheel&#34; on a call with Wall Street analysts, saying the company was different from competitors because it could reach people in many different ways.</p><p>Membership programs have gained popularity among retailers from Amazon.com Inc. to Walmart Inc. to Starbucks Corp. because they help companies better understand customers&#39; purchasing habits, while offering discounts or perks that encourage them to remain loyal.</p><p>Streaming video services can be sweeteners in those programs. Walmart said this month it will add free Paramount+ to its $98-a-year Walmart+ membership program and Amazon offers Prime Video through its program.</p><p>Competition in streaming video has intensified and all the major players are exploring various avenues to boost growth, from selling ads to raising prices to new distribution partnerships.</p><p>In the three-month period ended July 2, Disney+ gained 14.4 million new subscribers, bringing its total to 152.1 million. But the company brought down its forecast, saying it expected to have 215 million to 245 million subscribers by September 2024, partially due to losing the right to air popular Indian cricket competitions.</p><p>A membership program could help Disney learn more about its customers&#39; behavior by collecting data about which shows they watched, trips they took and merchandise they purchased. Ultimately, Disney&#39;s goal is to harness that data to make recommendations based on customers&#39; preferences, some of the people said.</p><p>For example, a fan of Star Wars rides at its theme park would get recommended related programming on Disney+.
