And so I politely declined the chance to invest in Palantir pre-IPO.</p><p>Palantir stock is up seven-fold from its $10 IPO price, by the way.</p><h2 id=\"id_1722708611\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Sour grapes</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">“And so what?” thought I to myself. So what if a lot of (obviously uninformed) investors think Palantir is a super-hot defense stock, and the best thing since sliced MREs? I still had only the vaguest understanding of what the company even did. Clearly, it couldn’t be that important.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Obviously, everyone else was overpaying for Palantir. Obviously, it was just another meme stock. After all, how else do you explain the fact that Palantir shares cost a crazy 330 times earnings? <strong>Lockheed Martin</strong> and <strong>General Dynamics </strong>are defense stocks too, and they cost only 20 times earnings or less.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">And yet, the more I look into Palantir today, the more I think I might have been wrong about it.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/a735d38a86bf19ac5befea6a9be910b8\" alt=\"pagadesign / Getty Images\" title=\"pagadesign / Getty Images\" tg-width=\"1366\" tg-height=\"767\"/><span>pagadesign / Getty Images</span></p><h2 id=\"id_3851101975\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Palantir is growing like wildfire — and profitable</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">What was my first clue? Well, let’s start with the fact that over the last 5-6 years, Palantir’s revenues have more than quadrupled, from $595 million in 2018, to $2.65 billion over the last 12 months.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Or the fact that Palantir has flipped from losing money five years ago, to making gobs of greenbacks today. In 2018, Palantir racked up $580 million in net losses on its $595 million in revenue, meaning for every $1 the company collected, suffered almost $1 in losses. That was then, though, and this is now, and now, Palantir is raking in a healthy $477 million annually.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Admittedly, on a $157.7 billion market capitalization, that still leaves us with a stock costing 330 times earnings. But it’s a whole lot better than a stock with no earnings at all, and nothing but losses to show for its work.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">One could also argue that Palantir is even cheaper than its P/E makes it look. Over the past year, Palantir has generated $980 million in positive free cash flow. That’s more than twice its reported profit. Put another way, for every $1 Palantir reports as net profit, it deposits $2.05 in its bank account in cold, hard cash.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8ecbda5b4eaaf4a7b945084a85bc7d89\" alt=\"imaginima / E+ via Getty Images\" title=\"imaginima / E+ via Getty Images\" tg-width=\"1366\" tg-height=\"768\"/><span>imaginima / E+ via Getty Images</span></p><h2 id=\"id_750717762\" style=\"text-align: start;\">A defense play on the AI revolution</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">What is making Palantir such a success? The artificial intelligence revolution is a large part of this story.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">As an AI stock, Palantir’s business is divides roughly 55-45 between military and security work for government customers, and AI-driven data analytics for major private-sector businesses. Now, businesses’ interest in AI is widely known. What many people may not appreciate, though, is how big a role AI is starting to play in the military, where its software is used for everything from improving overall situational awareness for the warfighter, to optimizing sensor data for improved targeting, to predicting upcoming maintenance requirements for military hardware.  </p><p>There’s hardly an aspect of the military machine that Palantir isn’t working hard to improve with AI. And with the money the government spends to kickstart Palantir’s capabilities in these realms, the company can tailor them to commercial uses as well, helping to grow both halves of the business simultaneously.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Make no mistake, at 330 times earnings and even at a price-to-free cash flow ratio half of that, I still think Palantir’s stock is overpriced based on the 27.5% long-term annual growth rate analysts have it pegged for. I have no intention of buying into the stock at this valuation. That said, there’s more to Palantir stock than just meme-stock momentum.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">There’s a real business behind the PLTR stock symbol, and it’s growing rapidly and profitably. gambling on speculative stocks were facing a day of reckoning on Wednesday as many of their favorite trades suffered a startling meltdown.</p><p>The carnage began with a comment from Nvidia Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NVDA\">$(NVDA)$</a> chief executive Jensen Huang at a CES tech conference in Las Vegas about how quantum computers could still be 20 years away. That helped trigger a punishing selloff in shares of quantum-computing stocks like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/RGTI\">Rigetti Computing</a> Inc. and IonQ Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IONQ\">$(IONQ)$</a></p><p>Both of those stocks were soon down as much as 50% on the day, eventually tallying their biggest daily declines on record, FactSet data showed. Other popular quantum names, including <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QUBT\">Quantum Computing Inc.</a>, saw similarly severe declines.</p><p>But the pressure soon spread to other stocks popular with the retail crowd as individual speculators rushed to meet margin calls, said Farzin Azarm, a managing director at Mizuho Securities USA.</p><p>After helping to magnify gains on the way up, the rampant use of leverage by traders appeared to help exacerbate losses on the way down, as it often does.</p><p>In December, Interactive Brokers Group Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IBKR\">$(IBKR)$</a> founder and Chairman Thomas Peterffy said that margin loans on his platform had risen 16% over the previous three months. He made the remark during an appearance at a conference hosted by Goldman Sachs Group <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GS\">$(GS)$</a>.</p><p>&#34;The retail crowd is facing a day of reckoning today,&#34; Azarm at Mizuho told MarketWatch in an interview. &#34;They had been buying into these extremely speculative names, but now that&#39;s starting to unwind.&#34;</p><p>A FTSE-Russell index of heavily-shorted U.S. stocks, which had otherwise seen its strongest start to a year since the meme-stock madness of 2021, dropped more than 5% on Wednesday, according to LSEG data.</p><p>Aerospace and space-exploration stocks were swept up in the selling, with shares of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LUNR\">Intuitive Machines</a> Inc. (LUNR) down more than 5% and Archer Aviation <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ACHR\">$(ACHR)$</a> down nearly 6%.</p><p>Nuclear-power stocks also suffered. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NANO\">NANO Nuclear Energy Inc.</a> <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NNE\">$(NNE)$</a> fell more than 11%, while <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SMR\">NuScale Power</a> Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SMR.AU\">$(SMR.AU)$</a> was down more than 9%. Other themes popular with retail traders, from cryptocurrency, to cannabis to autonomous driving, also took a hit.</p><p>And, of course, penny stocks like XTI Aerospace Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/XTIA\">$(XTIA)$</a> got hammered. Shares were trading at just 5 cents a pop, off more than 50% on the day, after surging 30% one day earlier.</p><p>Retail traders have been particularly active in the market lately, Mizuho&#39;s Azarm said, which suggests that they were responsible for much of the action in these more speculative names.</p><p>Trading volume in the U.S. equity market exploded earlier this week. Nasdaq Composite trading volume rose to nearly 14 billion shares on Tuesday, the highest level on record going back to 1995, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The market wasn&#39;t as active on Wednesday.</p><p>According to data tracked by Azarm, roughly 55% of activity in the U.S. market over the past two weeks has been tied to platforms typically used by individual investors.</p><p>&#34;This is massive. Even during the 2021 meltup, we hardly saw anything this elevated,&#34; he said, referring to the meme-stock frenzy that saw shares of GameStop Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GME\">$(GME)$</a> and AMC Entertainment Holdings <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMC\">$(AMC)$</a> soar in early 2021.</p><p>Some of the recent surge in trading volume across the U.S. market appeared to be tied to penny stocks, Joe Saluzzi, partner and co-founder of Themis Trading, told MarketWatch. Volume in shares of companies trading at $1 or less has been unusually high lately, he said.</p><p>Quantum-computing stocks, heavily-shorted names, and other popular speculative bets have soared since the election as President-elect Donald Trump&#39;s victory appeared to unleash &#34;animal spirits&#34; in the equity market, said Julian Klymochko, CEO and chief investment officer at Accelerate, an alternative-investment firm that offers several exchange-traded funds.</p><p>Recent froth in markets hasn&#39;t been limited to stocks. It also has been evident in the cryptocurrency market, with the price of a bitcoin rising north of $100,000, while the market capitalization of Fartcoin, a popular meme token, recently surpassed $1 billion, making it worth more than some publicly traded companies.</p><p>Shares of heavily-shorted companies like Him &amp; Hers Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HIMS\">$(HIMS)$</a>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LAES\">SEALSQ Corp</a>. (LAES), and Enovix Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ENVX\">$(ENVX)$</a> soared late last year. But they ran into trouble this week.</p><p>&#34;There has been a massive speculative bid in the market that is keeping these heavily-shorted stocks elevated. In the business, we call them profitless junk stocks,&#34; Klymochko at Accelerate said.</p><p>The selloff in these speculative names has coincided with weakness in the broader market. So what if a lot of (obviously uninformed) investors think Palantir is a super-hot defense stock, and the best thing since sliced MREs? I still had only the vaguest understanding of what the company even did. Clearly, it couldn’t be that important.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Obviously, everyone else was overpaying for Palantir. Obviously, it was just another meme stock. After all, how else do you explain the fact that Palantir shares cost a crazy 330 times earnings? <strong>Lockheed Martin</strong> and <strong>General Dynamics </strong>are defense stocks too, and they cost only 20 times earnings or less.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">And yet, the more I look into Palantir today, the more I think I might have been wrong about it.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/a735d38a86bf19ac5befea6a9be910b8\" alt=\"pagadesign / Getty Images\" title=\"pagadesign / Getty Images\" tg-width=\"1366\" tg-height=\"767\"/><span>pagadesign / Getty Images</span></p><h2 id=\"id_3851101975\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Palantir is growing like wildfire — and profitable</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">What was my first clue? Well, let’s start with the fact that over the last 5-6 years, Palantir’s revenues have more than quadrupled, from $595 million in 2018, to $2.65 billion over the last 12 months.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Or the fact that Palantir has flipped from losing money five years ago, to making gobs of greenbacks today. In 2018, Palantir racked up $580 million in net losses on its $595 million in revenue, meaning for every $1 the company collected, suffered almost $1 in losses. That was then, though, and this is now, and now, Palantir is raking in a healthy $477 million annually.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Admittedly, on a $157.7 billion market capitalization, that still leaves us with a stock costing 330 times earnings. But it’s a whole lot better than a stock with no earnings at all, and nothing but losses to show for its work.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">One could also argue that Palantir is even cheaper than its P/E makes it look. Over the past year, Palantir has generated $980 million in positive free cash flow. That’s more than twice its reported profit. Put another way, for every $1 Palantir reports as net profit, it deposits $2.05 in its bank account in cold, hard cash.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8ecbda5b4eaaf4a7b945084a85bc7d89\" alt=\"imaginima / E+ via Getty Images\" title=\"imaginima / E+ via Getty Images\" tg-width=\"1366\" tg-height=\"768\"/><span>imaginima / E+ via Getty Images</span></p><h2 id=\"id_750717762\" style=\"text-align: start;\">A defense play on the AI revolution</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">What is making Palantir such a success? The artificial intelligence revolution is a large part of this story.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">As an AI stock, Palantir’s business is divides roughly 55-45 between military and security work for government customers, and AI-driven data analytics for major private-sector businesses. Now, businesses’ interest in AI is widely known. What many people may not appreciate, though, is how big a role AI is starting to play in the military, where its software is used for everything from improving overall situational awareness for the warfighter, to optimizing sensor data for improved targeting, to predicting upcoming maintenance requirements for military hardware.  </p><p>There’s hardly an aspect of the military machine that Palantir isn’t working hard to improve with AI. And with the money the government spends to kickstart Palantir’s capabilities in these realms, the company can tailor them to commercial uses as well, helping to grow both halves of the business simultaneously.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Make no mistake, at 330 times earnings and even at a price-to-free cash flow ratio half of that, I still think Palantir’s stock is overpriced based on the 27.5% long-term annual growth rate analysts have it pegged for. I have no intention of buying into the stock at this valuation.
