The US Central Command has announced the completion of a new wave of offensive strikes against Iran on July 12. Precision munitions were used to hit dozens of targets across multiple locations, with the stated aim of degrading Iran's capacity to continue attacks on international shipping transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Forces under Central Command targeted Iran's military air defense systems, coastal radar sites, and missile and drone capabilities. Notably, this operation marked the first use of a combined force of US fighter aircraft, naval ships, and one-way attack aerial and maritime drones to strike small boats.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint for global trade. Iran does not control the waterway. US military forces have stated they are positioned and ready to ensure commercial shipping continues to enjoy freedom of navigation.
