Food prices are rising in some of the most food-insecure countries in the Middle East, the humanitarian group Save the Children said Thursday. In Lebanon, which has seen heavy military action, the price of fuel and key foods rose 5% between Feb. 23 and March 9, according to the group. In Afghanistan, which depends on Iran for a steady portion of its imports, prices of some vegetables and cooking oil have risen 13%, the organization said.
"While food prices generally tend to rise around Eid, the conflict has driven fuel and food prices higher than usual, pushing already vulnerable families closer to the brink," Save the Children said, referring to the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan.
