Russia Offered to Stop Helping Iran Target U.S. Troops in Exchange for Relief in Ukraine -- WSJ

Dow Jones03-21 05:37

By Bojan Pancevski and Alexander Ward

Russia offered to stop supplying targeting data for Iranian drone and missile strikes on U.S. forces if Washington halted aid enabling Ukraine to hit Russian targets, according to officials familiar with the talks.

The proposal was made by Russia's envoy for Ukraine negotiations to U.S. counterparts Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who rejected it during a meeting in Miami last week, the officials said.

Iran has carried out precision strikes on U.S. assets in the region, including attacks in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia that killed seven U.S. servicemen.

Western intelligence officials told The Wall Street Journal that Russia has been providing targeting data from its spy satellite network to Iran, a key Kremlin ally, since the start of the war.

Kirill Dmitriev made the offer after the U.S. side pressed Moscow to stop helping Iran target Americans in the Gulf, two officials briefed on the talks said.

The proposal was first reported by Politico. Dmitriev dismissed it as "fake" on X.

European officials involved in the Ukraine negotiation said they were concerned that the U.S. would consider accepting the Russian offer as the war on Iran drags on and more American troops get hit by Tehran's projectiles. U.S. sources familiar with discussions also confirmed the Russian offer.
