BHP Advances Rio Doce Reparations With New Funding Transfers

BHP (BHP) Brasil said Wednesday that more than 1.2 billion Brazilian reais ($235.8 million) in new funds has been transferred under the new Rio Doce agreement, marking progress in reparations.
The new funds include 243 million reais for healthcare, 850 million reais for environmental conservation and 87.6 million reais for economic development in Mariana.
Healthcare funds will support 49 municipalities, while environmental funding will strengthen 17 conservation units across 39 municipalities in the Rio Doce Basin, the company said.
In addition, BNDES recently transferred 32.4 million reais for conservation unit management.
