President Donald Trump on October 3 posted on social platform X, urging Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton to support the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent and eliminate the twice-yearly clock changes. The House of Representatives passed the bill with a bipartisan vote of 308 to 117, but it has been stalled in the Senate for months by Cotton, Trump said.
"If Tom Cotton were putting Arkansas first, he would give them an extra hour of daylight and, more importantly, they wouldn’t have to run all over their houses, farms, work places, twice a year, having to change their Clocks," Trump wrote. He accused Cotton of blocking the bill out of "ego" and noted that daylight saving time polls at 65-35 in favor. "It’s even been proven to be better in stopping CRIME... CRIMINALS DON’T LIKE WORKING IN THE LIGHT."
Trump called the passage of the bill "a very nice and easy WIN for the Republican Party" and thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson and bipartisan lawmakers. He concluded: "TAKE THE WIN TOM, JUST TAKE THE WIN! YOU NEED IT, AND SO DOES OUR BELOVED REPUBLICAN PARTY!"
