Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against OpenAI alleging the company's chatbot ChatGPT had negative effects on consumers.
The suit claims OpenAI's large-language models lack adequate safeguards and can generate inaccurate or harmful information without disclosing the risk to users.
Paxton alleged that OpenAI's chatbots aided and abetted mass shooters, encouraged suicide, eroded critical thinking skills in individuals and was addictive for minors.
The claims are being brought under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, alleging OpenAI deceived users about risk. The suit also alleges that OpenAI's operations violate the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment Act.
Paxton's suit seeks more than $1 million in monetary relief from OpenAI and is looking for the court to order the company to stop the allegedly harmful practices. Texas also seeks to hold Chief Executive Sam Altman "personally liable" for the alleged harm he has caused citizens, the suit says.
OpenAI could not immediately be reached for comment.
