the long term, Sea Limited (NYSE:SE) stock – propelled by the company’s strong, rapidly growing e-commerce, financial services and video game businesses – should deliver very impressive financial But in the short and medium term, for a variety of reasons, SE stock is likely to get little affection from the Street.Moreover, despite the huge, recent decline of the shares, their valuation remains quite elevated.Rapid Growth and a Positive Long-Term OutlookSea Limited’s three largest business – e-commerce, digital financial services, and video games – all appear to be doing very well.In the third quarter, the gross orders of its e-commerce unit soared 123% year-over-year to $1.7 billion, while its gross market volume jumped 81% to $16.8 billion. In financial services, its total payment volume climbed 111% to $4.6 billion, while the number of its paying users soared 120% from a year ago.The performance of Sea’s video game business was less impressive, but its quarterly active user base still rose 27% from a year ago to 729 million, while its bookings increased 29% to $1.2 billion and its EBITDA, excluding certain items, rose 22% to $715 million.So, despite the challenges to all of these businesses and the difficult year-over-year comparisons created by the easing of the pandemic, the growth of all three ranged from quite respectable to tremendous.Overall, Sea’s sales jumped 122% from last year,reaching $2.7 billion,while its gross profit surged 148% to $1 billion.Moreover, there are multiple signs that the company has become very adept at expanding its e-commerce business to new markets. For example, the company has already had some success in Brazil, which is, of course, quite far away and very different from Sea’s home base in Southeast Asia.During Sea’s Q3 earnings call in November, CEO Forrest Lit said, “More than 1 million local sellers in Brazil have registered with {Sea’s e-commerce website) since we started welcoming local sellers in mid-2020.”Meanwhile, Sea’s e-commerce unit is continuing to move into new geographic markets, as it has recently expanded to Poland, France, Spain and India, Li reported.Short-Run IssuesObviously, the market is currently not very enchanted with tech in general and any tech businesses seen as benefiting from the pandemic in particular these days. Unfortunately for Sea, the company’s three main businesses are all in the latter category.Two other characteristics that the Street does not like at all these days are lack of profitability and a high valuation. Sea has both of these characteristics as well.In Q3, for example, its net loss came in at $425.26 million. While that loss was 34% better than the $571 million it shed during the same period a year earlier, the company still obviously lost a great deal of money.On two positive notes, the company’s operating expenses dropped to $713 million in Q3 from $1.45 billion in the year-earlier period, while its EBITDA, excluding certain items, climbed to positive $120.4 million from a loss of $165.45 million.Nevertheless, large investors are still likely to view Sea as an unprofitable enterprise.And on the valuation front, SE stock is changing hands for nearly 15x Sea’s trailing 12-month revenue. That’s way down from the stock’s valuation of 23.6x trailing sales as of Sept. 30, but it’s still a very high price to pay for the shares.The Bottom Line on SE StockSea is rapidly growing and has tremendous long-term potential. But as shown by the fact that its shares tumbled by 33% in the last month, it’s not a good stock to buy in the current market.As a result, rather than try to catch this falling knife, investors should wait for the market’s attitude towards names like SE stock to improve before taking a bullish position in it. You wrote to us before the show, saying “avoid the temptation to step in and buy into the selloff in high-growth stocks.” You said, “my experience is: Once the fever breaks, it’s done for quite a while.” Historically, is there any precedent you could point to? Is it too simple to point to the dot-com bubble as a fair comparison?A. So first of all, I just want to make sure it’s understood: I’m not a value manager, or a growth manager. I’m not trying to, you know, spin what works or what my investment philosophy is at all times. I’m just looking at what the fat pitch is. And as it pertains to this group, the reason why I believe once the fever breaks, it lasts a long time, is if you wind the clock back, if you look at some of these uber-growth funds back to where they were in early fall of 2020, that means a lot of people haven’t made money, right? Because they chased into them after they peaked.And the reason why the dot-com analogy is correct is that that means that every time they start to go up, there’s someone that can get out even. And so there’s tremendous selling resistance at higher levels because so many people have lost money. And that to me is very similar to the dot-com bubble, and other bubbles. Once a very speculative bubble breaks, it’s not a V bottom because there’s too many people looking to get out.Q. So what cohort would you look at? Could you see the Nasdaq 100 going down as much as it did then, or more like a Cathie Wood-type of fund?A. That’s the difference to 2000. In 2000, the Nasdaq had obscene prices. You also had some of these very big-cap tech stocks trading at triple-digit multiples. And when I look at these uber-growth stocks, they’re expensive as they were in 2000, but the main tech stocks, the Nasdaq 100, the big stocks, they’re not as expensive. So I don’t think the (comparison to the) Nasdaq break of 2000 is quite accurate because I don’t think the really big tech stocks are as vulnerable.Q. One thing I always think about along these lines is that there’s something in human nature that is always going to make that instinct to chase the high flyers come back at some point.A. Greed.Q. Yeah, right. As simple as that. But what are the conditions you would look for to be in place to bring that trade back?A. Well, I think it’s first seller exhaustion, where stocks stop going down on bad news because there’s no one left to sell them. And I’m just not sure we’re there yet. I haven’t seen big capitulation. I mean, the stocks are down a lot, but there hasn’t been big capitulation in these stocks. The other way I think about it is when no one believes that they can buy the dip anymore. That’s when the bottom happens, right? When people say, “I don’t wanna touch them. These are uninvestible,” that’s when I get interested. But when people are saying, “Hey, well, what do you think?” Because the memory of making a lot of money is too recent and that leads people to try to bottom fish.I’ve been in this business a long time. Human behavior doesn’t change. And so when this type of bubble breaks, you get counter-trend rallies and they go up a little bit and then they go down low and then they go up and they go down until people say, “Don’t ask me one more thing about it. I don’t want to talk about it. Moving on.” And then I go, “Oh, that’s kind of interesting.” That means maybe they’re getting to a bottom.Q. Your fund was up 36% last year. Everybody at home is wondering what exactly you might be favoring this year and how they should be positioning as the year unfolds?A. The reason why we had a good year last year is simply that we played the playbook. The playbook is that when you’re coming out of recessions, cyclical stocks do well, right? Because in recessions people sell anything that’s economically sensitive and they hold on to things that they perceive as not economically sensitive. So the spread between the cyclical stocks and the non-cyclical stocks, it’s extreme. And boy oh boy did it really get extreme. So it was kind of a fat pitch to own financials and energy stocks in 2021. And so that worked. The other thing that really worked is just listening to companies and follow earnings. Now, just to be clear, earnings growth doesn’t drive stock prices, it’s surprises, right? A stock price embeds all future expectations. So if companies are doing better than what is expected, they go up ...So going into this year, I think we’re in an environment where central bank policy is willing to accept higher levels of inflation for faster growth that will lead to more wage growth. Now right now, the Fed is starting to pivot a little bit because real wages aren’t going up. So I think they’re going to make a move to bring down inflation, but I think we’re moving into an environment where we’re going to have higher growth at the expense of higher inflation. And that’s an environment where you want to own some value stocks. Again, I’m not saying throw away all your growth stocks to buy all value because I believe in technology long term. But I do think that we’ve come out of a decade of slow growth and we’re moving into a faster-growth environment. And I think you want to own a few more value stocks. And I don’t think this year will be any different than last year.Q. You sent us a list of some stocks that you really like: Alphabet, Microsoft and Danaher. Could you walk us through why you like these picks in particular?A. Our biggest overweights are financials, REITs and energy stocks. The “however” of that is those stocks are red-hot right now. Financials and energy have done really well this year. So I think we’re into an environment where you have to be careful going into earning season, given how strong they’ve been. And so I’m just a little bit wary of owning those stocks or buying those stocks right here. And again, those growth stocks haven’t done as well. Microsoft, Google, Danaher, they haven’t done as well because they’re not hot stocks right now. And those companies are reporting very good earnings.Q. You’re bullish on Microsoft, you have it in both the international and the U.S. core fund. Curious what you think of this Activision Blizzard takeover this week? And what does that signal to you?A. It’s a sign that companies are flush with cash, which, oh, by the way, what’s the ROI on cash right now? So I think it’s going to be a -- I’m no investment banker -- but I think it’s going to be a big year for M&A because companies have very strong balance sheets and they got a lot of cash on hand and they’re going to be looking for bolt-on acquisitions. So to the extent that things are immediately accretive, I think you’re going to see companies jump at it.And not a lot of people talk about that, but I really think that the story is that corporate fundamentals are not getting the press they deserve. I really do. However, 2020 marked a standout year for CVNA stock, as it returned a breathtaking 160%. In addition, Carvana was a major beneficiary of Covid-19 as interested car buyers flocked to the Carvana app and website instead of brick-and-mortar dealerships. After 2021 saw Carvana basically stagnate, two major billion-dollar institutions are now capitalizing on CVNA stock’s dull performance.In an amended 13G filing received by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Jan. 12, Baillie Gifford increased its current Carvana position by an additional 620,641 shares, or 6.8%. Baillie Gifford boasts assets under management (AUM) of $191 billion. Furthermore, the fund is a long-term investor and holds each position for an average of10.43 quarters. After the purchase, the United Kingdom-based institutional investor now owns 11.28% of all Carvana shares outstanding. It’s safe to say that Baillie Gifford is bullish on the future of automobile e-commerce.The second billion-dollar institutional investor to pick up shares of CVNA stock is Fidelity Management and Research. In an amended 13G filing received on Jan. 10, FMR increased its current Carvana position by a massive 2,302,683 shares, or roughly 33%. The fund now owns 10.86% of all Carvana shares outstanding. FMR manages $1.2 trillion in AUM and holds each position in its portfolio for an average of 21.94 quarters.GoodRx Holdings (GDRX)Like Carvana, GoodRx had a disappointing 2021.After reaching an all-time high of $59 in February, GDRX stock closed the year around $32. GoodRx operates as a consumer-facing digital healthcare platform. The platform is free to use with no registration required. Instead, GoodRx collects revenue through referral fees and advertisements. Additionally, the platform helps consumers compare prescription drug prices and discounts from multiple vendors in order to find the best priced selection. GoodRx’s website notes that “The cost of a prescription may differ by more than $100 between pharmacies across the street from each other!” Since its inception, GoodRx has helped consumers save $35 billion on healthcare and prescription drugs. Now, GoodRx is attracting the attention of a major investment bank.Morgan Stanley(NYSE:MS)filed a 13G form on Jan. 7. The filing states that the investment bank picked up 11,556,961 shares of GDRX stock after previously owning zero shares of the healthcare platform. Additionally, Morgan Stanley’s purchase signifies 14.2% ownership of all shares outstanding.It should be noted that Morgan Stanley analyst Ricky Goldwasser has a$41 price target for GDRX stock. This implies upside of more than 50% from current prices.Stocks to Watch: Southwest Airlines(LUV)Airlines like Southwest Airlines have experienced volatile price movements since Covid-19 began.Now, with the onset of the omicron variant, airlines are having to cancel thousands of flights due to staff shortages and other extenuating circumstances, like weather. From Jan. 4-5, Southwest Airlines cancelled over 1,200 flights, more than any other airline carrier in that time period. However, data fromFlightAware shows that global arrivals via aircraft has increased by 10% this week when compared to the prior week. This is a small silver lining for an industry that has been pummeled by reduced air travel. However, an established investment firm is now capitalizing on Southwest Airlines’ current predicament.In an amended 13G filing received on Jan. 10, The Vanguard Group reported that it had increased its existing Southwest Airlines position by 10,227,315 shares, or close to 20%. After the purchase, The Vanguard Group now owns a 10.44% stake in LUV stock, which is equivalent to 61,814,978 shares.According to the latest ADV form, The Vanguard Group manages over $6.6 trillion in AUM. The investment firm holds each position in its portfolio for an average of 39.14 quarters. Therefore, Vanguard’s average holding period suggests that the firm is committed to LUV stock for the long haul.HubSpot (HUBS)Shares of HubSpot have been on a rampage since the March 2020 pandemic lows. The marketing software solutions company gained over 65% in 2021 amid a scramble to increase digital marketing solutions.However, a recent short report published by a prominent hedge fund has sent shares of HubSpot to the doghouse. On Dec. 22, Kerrisdale Capital released a short report alleging that HubSpot is overvalued compared to its peers and slowing in growth with declining margins. Kerrisdale also highlighted that rivals to HubSpot are gaining market share, such as Klaviyo and Mailchimp. Since then, HUBS stock has declined by a staggering 33%. Despite Kerrisdale’s short report, an acclaimed investment firm is now buying shares of HubSpot.On Jan. 10,T. Rowe Price(NASDAQ:TROW) filed an amended 13G form. The form stated that T. Rowe Price had acquired an additional 1,905,309 shares of HUB stock, increasing its current position by a whopping 63%. After the purchase, T. Rowe Price now owns a 10.40% stake in HubSpot, or 4,922,119 shares.Stocks to Watch: Discovery Communications (DISCA)The last of the stocks to watch is Discovery Communications, a multinational media company that engages in factual content across several distribution platforms. Last year, the media company was caught up in the Archegos fiasco.In 2021, shares of DISCA stock rose as high as $79, which investors attributed to Archegos bidding up the stock on leverage. Later that year, Archegos’ highly leveraged positions turned against the fund, and as a result, Archegos had to liquidate its entire DISCA position. Shares of DISCA stock declined rapidly, and the company now trades at $31 a share, a far cry from its 2021 highs.In the midst of the selloff, investment banks like Credit Suisse(NYSE:CS) took a lot of damage. This is because Credit Suisse and other banks sold swaps to Archegos. Swaps allow funds like Archegos to gain exposure to stocks without actually owning them. The ownership falls in the hands of the bank selling swaps. Nonetheless, a New-York based hedge fund with over$2 billion in AUMis now taking advantage of DISCA stock’s price decline.In a13G filing received by the SEC on Jan. 7,Brahman Capital reported that it had purchased 8,907,654 shares of DISCA stock. The purchase represents a 5.26% ownership stake in Discovery.
