Once Upon A Time…

My journey with quantum computing and its related stocks happened a while back. in early 2024:

• 03 Jan 2024 - IBM is to Quantum, what MSFT is to AI. Invest now ?

• 24 Feb 2024 - After AI, its Quantum Computing. Invest now ?

It stayed in the background, chugging along until the fateful 09 Dec 2024, when Google brought the world’s attention to Quantum Computing with the unveiling of its “Willow” chip.

Very soon quantum stocks became the darling of US stock market with its stock prices on a meteoric rise as we welcomed 2025.

Its promising prospect became the envy of all things artificial intelligence because quantum computing proved to be more than just artificial intelligence and then some more…

Unfortunately, quantum stocks rise to stratosphere was clipped by Nvidia’s CEO when he proclaimed that quantum computing will not happen within the next 15 years.

Overnight, the fear stroked investors’ negative sentiments causing a massive sell off.

Quantum Darlings.

Of all quantum stocks in the market, including IBM that first piqued my interest, the 3 most traded are:

• $IONQ Inc.(IONQ)$.

• $Rigetti Computing(RGTI)$.

• $D-Wave Quantum Inc.(QBTS)$.

Price Movement - 2023 to 2025.

IonQ (IONQ):

• IONQ stock has shown significant growth over the past 2 years.

• As of 01 Mar 2025, the stock has accumulated a gain of +531.82%. (see below)

• The stock broke upward near $10 and has maintained a strong upward trend along an ascending channel, facing resistance near $47 level.

Rigetti Computing (RGTI):

• It experienced remarkable growth, with a cumulative increase of +1,113.16% since 01 Mar 2023.

• The stock has maintained strong upward momentum along an ascending channel, with resistance around $12.306. (see above)

• Additionally, RGTI stock surged +319.86% in the month leading up to 7 Jan 2025, and set an all-time high of $21.42 on 6 Jan 2025 when it was brought back down to earth by Nvidia’s CEO statement.

D-Wave Quantum (QBTS):

• Lastly, QBTS has seen a cumulative increase of +817.91% since 01 Mar 2023.

• The stock found support near $3.89 and began a strong rebound, facing resistance near $11.03 (as of 14 Mar 2025).

Revenue Growth

IonQ (IONQ):

• IonQ has demonstrated strong revenue growth.

• On 26 Feb 2025, it reported its Q4 2024 quarterly earnings.

• Loss per share : came in at -$0.932, significantly missing analyst expectations of -$0.23. It was also much lower than Q4 2023’s EPS of -$0.20.

• Revenue : was $11.7 million, surpassing its guidance range of $7.1 to $11.1 million for FY 2024, demonstrating strong performance in this area.

• It was lower than its Q3 2024 revenue of $12.4 million though.

Rigetti Computing (RGTI):

• Rigetti has reported its Q4 2024 earnings on 05 Mar 2025.

• Loss per share : was -US$0.08 vs market expectation of -$0.07 vs an improvement from Q4 2023’s -$0.09.

• Revenue : was US$2.27 million vs $3.20 million expected vs Q4 2023’s $3.38 million million (down -32.84% YoY).

• Revenue for first 9 months of 2024 was $8.52 million, slightly lower than the $8.63 million reported for the same period in 2023.

D-Wave Quantum (QBTS):

• D-Wave has reported its Q4 2024 earnings on 13 Mar 2025.

• Loss per share (adjusted) : was -$0.08 vs market expectations of -$0.06 vs Q4 2023’s -$0.06.

• Revenue: was $2.31 million vs market expectations of $2.23 million vs Q4 2023’s $2.91 million, a fall of -20.62% YoY.

• QBTS’s Q4 2024 earnings are: (see below)

Saving grace from its Q4 2024 reporting were the “new” businesses highlights:

• D-Wave showed its quantum computer is better than regular supercomputers at solving real-world problems. They proved this in a Science journal article. Their Advantage2™ quantum computer solved a complex materials problem much faster and using less power than a top supercomputer

• It lets customers have quantum computers on-site. The Julich Supercomputing Centre bought the first D-Wave Advantage system. They plan to connect it to JUPITER, Europe's fastest supercomputer, for AI and optimization research.

• D-Wave has been deemed “awardable” on the US Department of Defense’s Tradewinds buying platform, which is designed to accelerate the procurement and adoption of emerging technologies.

• D-Wave started a "Quantum Uplift" program for customers unhappy with other quantum systems. It offers deals on D-Wave Advantage systems for new research and AI projects.

• D-Wave set up a third 4,400 qubit Advantage2 processor. It's better than the current system, with qubits that last twice as long, 40% more energy for better answers, and more qubit connections.

• It worked with customers on various projects: finding new drugs with Japan Tobacco, improving insurance with Leithà (part of Unipol), and helping North Wales Police place vehicles better.

• D-Wave and Staque collaborated to make a program to guide farm robots. They think it could help farmers use robots to grow more food and spend less money.

• D-Wave partnered with Carahsoft to sell quantum systems to the government through Carahsoft's network.

• At the same time, it started the Leap Quantum LaunchPad, giving people 3 months free to try quantum computers and get expert help

• D-Wave began a new "Quantum Realized" campaign to show how quantum computing helps today. They'll use ads, events, and support the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

• Finally, D-Wave announced Qubits 2025, their yearly meeting, for March 31, 2025 & April 1, 2025 will be in Scottsdale, Arizona. Many important people and companies will speak there.

Market should be expecting it stock price to rise higher with each successful action item (above) accomplised.

Profits Ranking.

While it is not apple-to-apple comparison (for now), a high level profitability ranking overview would be :

(#1) IonQ (IONQ):

• Despite current losses, IonQ's strong revenue growth and partnerships with major companies like AstraZeneca and the US Air Force Research Laboratory position it as the most likely to achieve profitability in the shortest time frame.

(#2) D-Wave Quantum (QBTS):

• While showing steady revenue growth, D-Wave's smaller scale compared to IonQ suggests it may take longer to reach profitability.

• A lot hinges on the list of businesses and tie-ups highlighted during Q4 2024 reporting. (see above)

(#3) Rigetti Computing (RGTI):

• With declining revenues and significant cash burn, Rigetti appears to be the furthest from profitability among the three companies.

• Yet it is the most watched over by traders and Wall Street alike.

• It has that “je ne sais quoi

  “ I supposed.

It's important to note that all three companies are currently operating at a loss. The timeline to profitability remains uncertain for each as we forge ahead in 2025.

Quantum 2nd Wave ?

Of late, there are new developments from the Quantum Computing community. (see below)

On 19 Feb 2025, $Microsoft(MSFT)$ unveiled its quantum chip - Majorana 1, that allows for more stable & controllable qubits, potentially solving one of the biggest challenges in quantum computing: error correction.

It believes this development could lead to commercially viable quantum computers within 5 years.

In the meantime, Microsoft will deploy the quantum chip in :

(1) Azure Quantum Integration: The quantum chip will be integrated into Azure Quantum, Microsoft's cloud-based quantum computing platform.

(2) Data Center Deployment: Microsoft has stated that their approach with Majorana 1 can be deployed in standard Azure data centers, suggesting it intends to incorporate the quantum chip into their existing cloud infrastructure.

Just 8 days later… $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ also announced its own quantum chip - named Ocelot, (see above)

Amazon’s chip advantage is its hardware-efficient approach to error correction; positioning AMZN (well !) to tackle the next phase of quantum computing - scaling the speed-of-light processor.

Amazon’s deployment of Ocelot:

(1) Azure Quantum Integration: The chip will eventually be available on the AWS Braket quantum cloud service, alongside other quantum hardware offerings.

(2) Research & Development (R&D) : For now, Ocelot will be used for further R&D in an effort to further improve error-corrected logical qubit error rates.

A lead in quantum computing presents a massive opportunity for cloud giants, ensuring they’d have first-mover advantage that could (a) impact a slew of industries and (b) help drive revenue growth for years to come.

Is this Quantum Computing’s 2nd wave to rouse investors’ interests, (hopefully) propelling IONQ, RGTI & QBTS up the stock-price ladder, again ?
