IT Billionaire Leo KoGuan, who once claimed to be one of the largest individual shareholders in Tesla, on Wednesday said he'd purchased 1 million shares in artificial intelligence chipmaker Nvidia and plans to buy more as he doubles down on his support of AI.

Key Facts

KoGuan, who is ranked by Forbes as among the 400 richest people in the world, posted about his purchase to X and said it’s proof of his belief that “AI is NOT a bubble, it is only the beginning.”

Nvidia, which last year became the first publicly traded firm ever to surpass a $5 trillion valuation, closed at $180.05 per share on Tuesday, meaning KoGuan would have paid $180.05 million for his stake.

KoGuan once claimed to be the third largest individual shareholder in Elon Musk’s Tesla with more than 200 million shares, but in 2024 he said he’d begun reducing his Tesla holdings and was diversifying his portfolio with 3-month treasury bills.

He hasn’t said exactly how much he still has in either investment, but on Wednesday said they still make up “most” of his holdings, calling Tesla “embodied physical AI.”

Forbes Valuation

KoGuan was last estimated to have a net worth of $8.7 billion, but has stopped sharing details of his holdings with Forbes. He is the chairman of IT provider SHI International, which he founded with his ex-wife Thai Lee in 1989. At the start of the pandemic, he sold most of his stock holdings (which included shares of Nvidia) to buy long-term Tesla call options.

Surprising Fact

KoGuan reportedly paid $47 million in 2020 to buy the largest penthouse in Singapore from British billionaire Sir James Dyson. The five-bedroom residence occupies the top three floors of the 64-story Guoco Tower in Singapore and comes with a pool, jacuzzi room and bar.
