When a Plunging Share Price Can Lead to Delisting
Although a low share price isn't a direct trigger, the underlying issues causing the plunge can lead to a delisting through other mechanisms:
Loss of Public Float (Squeeze-outs & Takeovers): When a company's share price plunges, its market capitalization drops significantly. This can tempt a major shareholder, founder, or external buyer to launch a low-ball takeover or privatization offer. If the buyer successfully acquires at least 90% of the company’s shares, they can exercise "squeeze-out" rights, and the company will be delisted.
Public Float Falling Below 10%: If a takeover or heavy share accumulation causes the public float (shares held by the general public) to fall below 10%, SGX will *suspend trading. The company is usually given a limited window (around 3 months) to restore its public float; otherwise, it will be delisted.
Severe Financial Distress / Insolvency: A plunging price is often a symptom of deep financial trouble. If a company enters severe judicial management, liquidation, or cannot prove it is a "going concern," trading will be suspended. If it cannot restructure or resolve its insolvency issues, SGX RegCo holds the power to compulsorily remove the issuer from the official list.
