Why GE Vernova Fell Despite a $176 Billion Backlog

$GE Vernova Inc.(GEV)$’s second-quarter report contained extraordinary order growth, higher guidance and more first-half free cash flow than the company generated throughout 2025. The stock nevertheless fell 8.7% on July 22.

The disconnect reflects elevated expectations and uneven performance beneath the headline figures.

Revenue increased 22% to $11.1 billion, while organic orders rose 88% to $24.2 billion. Backlog expanded by $13 billion sequentially to $176 billion. Adjusted EBITDA reached $1.2 billion, and its margin improved by 340 basis points to 11.3%. GE Vernova’s official results were released before the market opened on July 22.

The company raised full-year revenue guidance to $45.5 billion–$46.5 billion from $44.5 billion–$45.5 billion. Free-cash-flow guidance was increased much more dramatically, from $6.5 billion–$7.5 billion to $11.5 billion–$12.5 billion.

Electricity demand from AI data centres is a major driver. Data-centre orders surpassed $5 billion during the first half, more than double the total for all of 2025. Gas Power equipment backlog and reservation agreements reached 116 GW, and management now expects at least 125 GW by year-end.

Why did the market reject those results?

First, adjusted EBITDA slightly missed expectations, while management maintained its 12%–14% margin forecast rather than increasing it. After the stock’s earlier rally, investors were positioned for an almost flawless report.

Second, Wind remained a material drag. Wind orders fell 40%, and the segment produced a $275 million adjusted EBITDA loss. Higher offshore project costs and weak onshore demand offset part of the strength in Power and Electrification. Reuters’ July 22 analysis details that segment weakness.

Third, not all free cash flow has the same quality. Customer advances and payments for future production slots contributed heavily to cash generation. Those payments are valuable and reduce financing needs, but they create future performance obligations. Cash received before delivery should not be treated as identical to profit already earned on completed equipment.

GEV Weekly Chart

$GE Vernova Inc.(GEV)$ gapped below $1,021 and traded near $985 after previously closing around $1,079. The $980–$1,000 region is now the first support zone. The former gap area above approximately $1,020 becomes immediate resistance, with the previous closing region presenting a much stronger barrier.

Looking at the weekly chart, $GE Vernova Inc.(GEV)$ is not yet an attractive bullish entry because the price has formed a potential double top around $1,120–$1,160 and is now testing the critical $980–$1,000 neckline area after a sharp rejection. A decisive weekly close below approximately $980 would confirm weakening momentum and increase the likelihood of a deeper retracement toward $920, followed by the major $856–$895 support zone; conversely, holding $980 and reclaiming roughly $1,050 would reduce the bearish risk. Rather than buying calls into this uncertain structure, the cleaner trade would be a defined-risk 60–90 DTE put debit spread, such as buying the $980 put and selling the $900 put, entered only after a confirmed close below the neckline, with the lower strike positioned near the primary downside target. Traders seeking positive time decay could instead consider an out-of-the-money bear call spread above recent resistance, but GEV’s large price swings and potentially wide option spreads make strict position sizing essential. At present, the stock is worth monitoring, but the risk-reward does not justify chasing either direction until the $980–$1,000 area produces a clear confirmation.

The long-term evidence remains bullish, but the near-term chart and Wind economics are bearish. Power demand, backlog and data-centre orders are exceptionally strong, yet valuation requires consistent execution. The constructive thesis would be invalidated by order cancellations, weaker backlog margins, persistent Wind losses or failure to convert customer advances into profitable deliveries.
