Why CSX’s Intermodal Growth Is a Better Signal Than Its Fuel-Surcharge Revenue

$CSX Corp(CSX)$ delivered record quarterly revenue and significantly higher earnings, but the most informative part of the report was not the headline revenue increase. It was the combination of stronger freight volumes and improved operating efficiency.

Second-quarter revenue rose 10% year over year to $3.94 billion. Operating income increased 17% to $1.51 billion, while diluted earnings rose 23% to $0.54 per share. CSX expanded its operating margin by 240 basis points to 38.3%, even as total volume grew 6%. CSX’s official July 22 release contains the complete comparison.

Part of the revenue increase came from fuel surcharges, which fluctuate with energy prices and are not necessarily evidence of durable underlying demand. The stronger bullish signal was 9% intermodal growth. Intermodal traffic—containers transferred between trucks, ships and trains—is exposed to retail inventories, imports and domestic goods movement. It can therefore reveal whether CSX is winning freight from highways or benefiting from improving supply-chain activity.

The margin expansion is equally important. Railroads have large fixed networks, so additional volume can produce strong incremental profit when trains, crews and terminals are used efficiently. CSX’s ability to handle 6% more units while improving profitability suggests that recent operating initiatives are working.

The bearish argument is that rail volumes remain cyclical. A slowdown in manufacturing, construction or consumer-goods imports could weaken several traffic categories simultaneously. Coal revenue faces an additional structural risk as utilities shift their generation mix, while elevated fuel-surcharge revenue can reverse when energy prices decline.

CSX Daily Chart

$CSX Corp(CSX)$ traded around $49.93 before the July 23 open after rising in the initial post-earnings session. The $50 area is both a psychological level and an immediate technical test. A decisive close above it, accompanied by increased volume, would support a continuation pattern. Repeated rejection near $50 would raise the likelihood of consolidation, with the pre-earnings region representing the first meaningful support zone. Neither outcome is guaranteed from one session. I have no trade in this ticker and not planning any trades for now. However, it is worth putting in watchlist for potential future trade.

The evidence leans bullish because volume, operating income and margins improved together. The thesis would be invalidated by weakening intermodal volumes, deteriorating service metrics or margin gains driven mainly by temporary fuel effects rather than sustainable productivity.
